Chapter 3

Autor: Nameless
Kimberly took to addressing Lucas as Mr. Gardner while calling me by name. Though she claimed it was to appear closer to me, I knew it was because she didn't think I was worthy of being Mrs. Gardner.

It was bad enough that she thought that. I never expected Lucas to think that way either.

A wave of bitter amusement welled in me. I was the esteemed heiress of the Quinton family—since when did I need the title of Mrs. Gardner to bully others?

Once again, I lamented my past self for losing sight of who I was in the process of loving Lucas. At the same time, the last bit of attachment I had toward our marriage thoroughly disintegrated.

"Lucas Gardner, you'd better hurry up and sign the divorce agreement. Don't make me take this matter to court."

With those cold words, I picked up my suitcase and left without another backward glance.

My parents were watching a travel documentary about the aurora and discussing it excitedly when I entered the house. Upon seeing me, they hurriedly switched off the TV.

Traveling around the world had been a long-held wish of theirs. Unfortunately, as their only child, I had been too much of a fool for love that I had devoted myself entirely to Lucas and refused to take over the company so they could retire.

I stepped forward to pluck the remote from the table and turn the TV back on. Following that, I fished out my phone and booked two flight tickets to Fintaria.

Instead of the surprised delight that I had expected from them, they looked at me with faces full of worry.

Knowing that I couldn't keep the truth from them, I decided to be honest. "I'm… divorcing him."

Immediately, the vast living room plunged into silence.

After a long moment, Dad and Mom came over to take my hands gently in theirs.

"No matter what you decide, we'll always support you as long as you're happy."

"Your mom and I will always have your back."

My eyes reddened before all the accumulated grief and suffering spilled forth in the form of tears.

Back when I first told them that I wanted to marry Lucas, my parents had actually been against it. However, they couldn't bear my desperate begging and had finally caved.

Grabbing Dad's hand, I pulled Mom's over as well so our three hands were stacked on top of each other. Then, I forced my lips to curl into a smile. "Don't worry. I'm okay."

However, they still couldn't stop worrying about me, so they insisted that I change the flight tickets from the day after tomorrow to next week, citing that they wanted to spend a few more days with me.

At their suggestion, I made an appointment with a studio for a family photo.

This was actually one of the most highly anticipated activities that our family did every year. After marrying Lucas, I had invited him to join us for a family photo countless times, only for him to always refuse by saying that he was busy with work.

The next morning, my parents and I arrived at the studio early. To my surprise, there was a familiar figure already there—Lucas.

Beside him was Kimberly, who leaned her head against his shoulder while her eyes gleamed brightly. "Luke, thanks for canceling such an important meeting to come take photos with me."

Lucas smiled and tweaked her nose playfully. "Silly, you're the closest person to me. Who else am I supposed to spoil if not you?"

A wave of bitterness surged through me. As it turned out, it wasn't that he wasn't free. I had simply been undeserving of his time.

"Lina, what are you looking at?"

"Nothing. I thought I saw someone familiar, but I was mistaken." I shifted so that I would block Mom's sight of Lucas before tugging her into the studio.

During the photoshoot, I hooked my arms through my parents while smiling like a carefree child. There was a loud click as the photographer pressed the shutter, sealing this heartwarming scene forever in time.

In that moment, it was as though I had been reborn and rediscovered the most important things in life to me.

"Ouch!"

Mom had only just left for the restroom when Dad suddenly clutched his abdomen, his face twisting into a pained grimace.

"What's wrong? Is your gastric flaring up again?"

I helped him to the room next door, then called our family doctor and an ambulance.

"I was wondering why you were finally divorcing Luke. Turns out, you've found yourself a new sugar daddy."

While we were waiting for the ambulance, Kimberly suddenly appeared in the doorway.

With solid evidence proving Kimberly guilty of defamation and provoking trouble, she was detained for 15 days, fined, and ordered to pay a hefty sum for damages. The Lanes, not wanting to be dragged down into the mud with her, were quick to announce that they had cut ties with her. Hence, not only did Kimberly now carry a substantial debt on her back, but she had even lost her last safe harbor—the protection of the Lane family. As for the Gardner family, Thomas, for the sake of self-preservation, ruthlessly booted Lucas from the seat of Gardner Corporation's CEO and disowned him.Gardner Corporation was able to weather the heavy blows I dealt it, but only barely. After struggling valiantly for a few more months, it ultimately still declared bankruptcy.Under my leadership, Quinton Corporation quickly rose to become one of the leading companies in the city, while I went on to become one of the youngest celebrated entrepreneurs in the industry.Having both fallen from grace and su

Next to Lucas, Thomas spoke up for him as well, saying, "Selina, I've already taught him a lesson on your behalf, and I've also chased away that assistant of his. He merely made a mistake that every man in the world would make. Now that he knows he was wrong, won't you forgive him this once?"Despite the stern tone of his voice, there was nothing but apathy in Thomas' eyes, and the same could be said for Lucas as well.I couldn't stop myself from scoffing coldly. It was no wonder they were father and son. To them, the worst betrayal a spouse could ever commit in a marriage was nothing but a small, insignificant matter.I could only blame myself for being too naive in the past. There was no way that a man who could go so far as to have an illegitimate child could raise that child to be any sort of outstanding man.Lifting my head to look them in the eyes, I said, "I'm not a recycling station, so don't just send all sorts of trash to me. Let me make my stance clear one last time—I, S

A layer of cold sweat drenched Lucas' body at the butler's words.Off to the side, the anger that had been simmering in everyone boiled over in that instant, and they began berating him."Lucas, we didn't want to say anything, but you leave us no choice. As if it wasn't bad enough that you were fooling around outside, you actually paraded that woman in front of your wife too?""That's right! It would've been a small matter if it had only ruined your marriage, but now, you're affecting the entire family too! That's a huge problem!""If you ask me, you should quickly meet your wife and grovel on your knees for forgiveness while the company still stands. Otherwise, you'll only drag everyone down with you.""I second that! I honestly don't understand what you see in that lousy assistant of yours! She can't hold a candle to the heiress of the Quinton family, yet somehow, she has you completely wrapped around her finger!"Lucas flushed a bright red while his fingers curled into tight f

Naturally, Gardner Corporation's current predicament was all my doing. It was only then that Lucas finally understood that I was serious about my grudge with him, and I wouldn't stop until he was thoroughly ruined. His earlier remorse vanished in the blink of an eye as he slammed a fist onto his steering wheel. "Selina Quinton! At the end of the day, we were husband and wife! How could you be so ruthless!"The atmosphere in the car grew increasingly tense, only for his phone to ring again."Luke, help me! I'm being sued, and they're forcing me to apologize to the CEO of Quinton Corporation!"The frown on Lucas' face deepened. He was furious that I wouldn't even let a delicate woman like Kimberly off the hook. But more than that, he was annoyed at himself for dragging Kimberly down into this mess with him.He struggled to calm himself as he assured Kimberly gently, "Kimmy, don't be scared. I'll head over to you immediately."However, he was only halfway to the hospital when his p

How many nights had I spent clutching my phone, crying till the morning as I watched Kimberly's blissful social media posts?"To work overtime alone is to suffer. But with two people, it becomes a sweet moment of intimacy. Shoutout to my boss for being so kind as to keep me company! Love you!""I was so scared to be all alone in a motel room in the middle of the night that I burst into tears. Thankfully, my prince charming, a.k.a my boss, came to rescue the damsel in distress! How blissful is this?""Oh no! I accidentally messed up with a client. Luckily, my boss didn't blame me and even took me out on a vacation to cheer me up. I feel like the luckiest person alive right now…"There were plenty more of such posts, each flaunting something Lucas had done for her. Notably, all these blissful moments happened either during my birthdays or our anniversaries. Eventually, they even took over nearly every single day of my married life.In an instant, Lucas couldn't keep his composure an

Lucas shot me a dark look. "Let go of her!""In your dreams!" I retorted.Since he couldn't pull me away, he could only forcefully bend my fingers backward, one by one. The sound of bones breaking cracked through the air, causing me to furrow my brows tightly at the pain. Nevertheless, I gritted my teeth and refused to relent.Lucas ignored my pain as he continued to pry my fingers away. He warned, "Selina Quinton, you'd better let go right now! Otherwise, there really is no going back between us!"I failed to stop myself from scoffing once more. Even now, he still thought that I would regret my actions and turn back.Initially, I had planned on parting ways on amicable terms for the sake of our many years together. Now, however, I would fight him to the bitter end.Behind me, Dad suddenly opened his eyes and glanced in my direction before vomiting out a mouthful of blood."Dad!" I shouted, all the blood freezing in my veins. "Lucas Gardner, you've thoroughly pissed me off! If I
