LOGINEVELYN'S POV
Anya worked at the small bookstore café I had walked into just to rest my feet. I wasn't even reading the book in my hands. Just holding it and staring at the page like I was doing something useful. "You're not from here are you?" she asked as she set a mug in front of me. Her voice was warm. Really warm. "No," I said. "Just arrived." "Looking for a place? Or work?" "Looking for both right now " She studied me for a second then smiled. "You look like you need more than coffee." I don't know what it was about her. I just felt it. Something loosened in my chest and before I knew what I was doing I was talking. "I'm trying to start over," I said quietly. She didn't ask questions. Just nodded like people said that to her every day. "My roommate moved out last month. Small spare room. Nothing fancy but it's safe." Safe. That one word was enough. "You don't even know me," I said. "Sometimes you just know," she shrugged simply. I don't know why I trusted her. Maybe because she looked at me without suspicion. Without judgment. Maybe it was just the warmth in her voice that did it. That evening I followed her home. It was a small apartment, clean, narrow bed, window facing the street. "It's yours for now," she said. "We'll sort the rent later." I sat on the bed and cried again. But this time I was grateful. --- Over the next few weeks Anya became more than just a housemate. She became my friend. She helped me fix my resume, sat with me at the kitchen table going through job applications, practiced interview questions with me until we both knew the answers by heart. "You have impressive qualifications" she said one afternoon, adjusting her glasses and looking at my CV like it personally offended her. "Why is your masters degree listed third?" "I don't know, I just—" "Move it up. Lead with your strongest thing Evelyn." She slid the paper back across the table. "You're not applying for a favor. You're applying for a job you deserve." I looked at her. "You sound like a career coach." "I sound like someone who has been watching you undersell yourself for three weeks" she said simply and went back to her tea. I picked up the paper and moved it up. She was right. She usually was. "You have to stop apologizing for being qualified," she said one afternoon, not looking up from her book. "You shouldn't hide that." "I'm not hiding," I said. "I just forgot my worth for a while." She looked up then. Squeezed my hand across the table. "Then remember it." Crestwood College called two weeks later. My hands shook just holding the phone. Prestigious institution, wealthy students, high standards. The kind of place I used to dream about working at before Melvin made me forget I had dreams. "Go" Anya said from across the room before I even finished telling her about it. "Obviously go." "What if they—" "Go Evelyn." I went. The campus was a lot. Like a lot. It had wide lawns and tall buildings and students in designer clothes who walked like the ground owed them something. I felt completely out of place just standing at the gate with my folder of documents and my one good blazer. But when I stepped into the lecture hall for the teaching demonstration something in me settled. This was my space. Always had been. I didn't fumble or even second guess. I just taught and it felt really good. Like putting on clothes that actually fit after years of wearing the wrong size. A week later the offer came. I stared at it for a long time. Then I picked up my phone. "Anya." "Did you get it?" "I got it." She screamed so loud I had to pull the phone away from my ear and even then I was smiling, the real kind, the kind that starts somewhere deep and comes up whether you want it to or not. --- First week at Crestwood I walked in stiff and nervous with a smile I kept having to remind myself to wear. There were a lot of buildings with ivy, luxury cars lined up in the parking lot like a showroom, students who talked about holidays in other countries the same way normal people talked about going to the market. And then there was me. Two suitcases. One small shared apartment. A contract I absolutely could not afford to lose. Professor Evelyn Reed. It still felt strange saying it. The students showed me quickly where I stood. In my third week a girl with diamond earrings and glossy hair tripped beside me in the cafeteria. Her iced coffee went all over my skirt. "Oh my God" she gasped, not looking sorry at all. "I'm so clumsy." Her friends laughed. Just enough for me to hear every bit of it. "It's fine" I said, though it really wasn't. She looked me up and down once, the way people do when they've already decided what they think of you, then turned back to her friends without another word. I went to the bathroom and dried my skirt with paper towels and told myself it was fine again until I almost believed it. Another day two boys in the back row were talking about my jacket. "Vintage?" one said. "More like thrift store chic," the other replied. They didn't even bother lowering their voices. I pretended not to hear because honestly they annoyed me. All of them. The ease, the carelessness, the way they moved through life like nothing could ever really touch them. They had never counted coins before buying food or even had to fight for a single thing they had. My classroom felt like a battlefield most days. I'd walk in with my notes ready to discuss symbolism and character arcs and within minutes someone would find a way to test me. But none of them got to me the way Elroy Vans did.ELROY’S POVThe moment I drove the car to a halt, my heart leaped out of my chest at the sight right in front of me. There was a black chevy wedged in between two trees and the front of the car looked destroyed from where Noah and I stood before rushing over to the smoky vehicle.I searched the driver and passenger seats but there were empty “Evelyn! Evelyn!” I called out.“Miss Reeds” Noah called out, drawing my attention to the back seat and there she was, strapped into the seat with blood pooling at the side of her head, her body tilted towards the headrest of the seat and immobile. I shoved Noah aside, dragging the car door and I flung it open with much difficulty but as long as I was getting Evelyn out, it didn’t matter that it was difficult.“Help is on the way, I already phoned an ambulance” Noah said as I unbuckled her seatbelt and pulled her out of the car. I didn’t turn to thank him but I was sure he knew that I was thankful either way.I laid her on the ground and pressed m
EVELYN’S POVMy breath hitched when he reached for my phone, I hung up the call almost immediately for fear and without hesitation, I threw my phone out the window.“You think you’re smart!” He yelled, his true character seeping out “I’m just trying to keep you from making mistakes” he reached his hand towards me while one hand was on the steering wheel.“What mistake? My mistake was ever trying to think I could change you” I sobbed “You almost ruined my life and now that I’ve started all over again, you’re here to deal more damage?” “You left me with no choice, I had to find you” he said, his hand still steadied on the steering wheel. It really irked me at this time that he was a great driver. I only hoped in my heart that Elroy would be able to find me with the hints I left on the road and the fact that I let it slip about where we were and going, all I needed to do now was to stall but I didn’t know how.The car moved rigorously and he drove as though he wanted us to meet our make
ELROY’S POVI reluctantly made my way out of the house to avoid a bigger problem, Tiffany Sterling. The blonde haired witch has been on my case all week, one minute she’s trying to cuddle with me, another minute she’s fighting with me on our project grade like I didn’t do my part.“Hey” Noah waved, leaning on his car door and slipping his hands back into his pockets as a faint smile on his lips, I waved back as I made my way out of the convenience store, a solace and my hiding place from Tiffany.“How did you know I’d be here?” I asked, even though it felt like a rhetorical question, I still needed his answer.“Come on man, you’ve been my best pal for years, I’d be dumb to not know your whereabouts right about now” he answered “And Tiffany gave me a heads up that she would coming to your place” pulling his hand out for a shake. I chuckled lightly before dapping him.“Want a drink?” I asked, taking out the tiny carton strawberry milk I had bought on my little venture to the store. He t
EVELYN’S POVI shoved him away before someone could see “What the f*ck are you doing?!” I whispered, looking past his shoulder to see if Chloe had come back or if a maid was in on the action.“I’ve tried to stay away from you..it just..it just doesn’t work” he quivered in a way that made my heart melt, his eyes were piercing holes in mine but I didn’t let him think of the effect they had on me.“Just stay away!” I reprimanded him, putting some distance between us “This is your home, heck, this is Chloe’s room, get out” I wasn’t taking any chances, I’ve had too many encounters with him in closed spaces to know that it was a bad idea to have him and I together right now.“Uh..Miss Reeds” Chloe called from outside the door.Startled, I pulled back even further “Yes Chloe..” I answered loudly “Did you forget something?”“No, no, I wanted to ask if brother is there and also if you’ll take some cookies with your orange juice” she responded and for a second, Elroy and I exchanged glances, b
EVELYN’S POVI felt an awful shrill in my spine when I heard I say those words “What did you say?” I asked with an ear bent forward so she could repeat her sentence once again.“I wanted to suprise you..I’m sorry I didn’t inform you earlier” she said with a melancholic tone. What on earth am I even doing? Trying to scold her, a woman who did everything to make me feel safe and secure.“Wow..I’m so happy for you. Wait” I paused “You’re the new librarian and professor?” I asked, pointing out the information Ryder had given me just an hour ago.“Hey miss Anya..” Elroy greeted “Congratulations” That should’ve been the first thing I say “Congratulations Anya, I’m sorry I was caught off guard” I apologized.“Yeah..I am, so you mind giving me a little tour before we leave?” She raised a brow and it made me chuckle a bit.“Do you need to ask? I’ll gladly give you a tour” I walked towards her and slipped my arm into hers, locking our arms as we moved “Goodbye Mr Vans” I said sternly as we mov
EVELYN’S POVThe next couple of days felt like a breeze, I stayed away from Elroy and best part, it was now over, which meant, it was now evaluation period and time for normal classes.“Good morning class” I said calmly and they all answered in unison, as it was all week, Tiffany and Elroy couldn’t care any less with their giggling and hand cuddling.“It’s evaluation week, so take your textbooks and works really seriously” I said, flipping the pages of the book in front of me “I’m convinced everyone has sent in their projects” I raised a brow, there was a low grumble amongst them.“I’ll just have to check in on your works” I said loudly when I noticed someone’s arm in the air. “Yes Laurentis” I lifted my eyes to see a snarky smirk on the corner of his lips.“I wanted to pass out an invitation to my celebration” he started, I tried as hard to avoid his eyes by staring at the words on the page “And you’re invited too professor” he added. The class was in uproar, rowdy and inattentive “S
ELROY’s POVThe classroom was in uproar and I got to see his face again. The face of the man Evelyn pulled in for a hug at the hospital. Initially, I had gone to apologize for Tiffany’s rudeness as usual and there he was ogling over Evelyn. I couldn’t pinpoint what their relationship was but it w
Evelyn’s PovThe sight I had just witnessed sent shivers down my spine, but I stood at the door, Mrs Vans standing close to me, her mouth agape with shock. I mean I was shocked as well because I didn’t think that Elroy’s father would be such a man.“You dared to hit Chloe?” she asked with an anger
EVELYN’S POVIt made no sense, my thoughts were utterly scrambled as I tried so hard not to notice rock hard abs, pressing against my body as he pinned me to the wall. I had to remind myself that he wasn't in the right state of mind to understand what he was doing. so I try to free my arm from his
EVELYN’S POVThe air felt stiff and for a minute I froze, my mind distant as his eyes locked on mine. Pulling away from him, I felt his hand on mine, putting my palm back on his chest “Let’s stay this way” he mumbled softly “Even if it’s for a little while” I felt the butterflies form in my stoma
