Chapter 3

Author: Space Journey
Leading the young man back into the event caused quite a stir.

Attention shifted toward us from every direction, but I ignored it. The young man also seemed focused only on me, paying everyone else no mind.

Emil glared from his seat as he furiously fired off texts.

Emil: [What the fuck are you doing?!]

Emil: [You think you can get under my skin just by bringing some random NPC with you?!]

Emil: [Do you still want me to marry you or not?! Because you're shooting your fucking self in the foot!]

A faint smirk tugged at my lips for a brief moment. He caught my eye and froze before his expression darkened even further.

"Miss Colbert, a little bird told us you came here to celebrate our Best Actor's achievements this year. He seems to be taking home quite a few awards tonight! Is there anything you'd like to say about that? Perhaps a word of congratulations?" the emcee asked.

I smiled. "Oh, then I guess the little bird got it wrong. I came here for this young man beside me. Not him."

The crowd gasped.

Everyone in the industry knew I was the deep pocket bankrolling Emil's career. His achievements were only possible because of my money. That meant we had some kind of "special connection."

The fact that I was dressed even more lavishly than several actresses, despite not being one myself, only reinforced the assumption that I was here to celebrate Emil's success.

I gestured toward the young man beside me.

He accepted the attention with poise and grace. "Good evening, everyone. My name is Ashe Olivier. I'm very honored to be here."

"Ashe is a very promising artist, I can tell you that. If any writer or director has an interesting project and is looking for fresh talent, give him a chance. I'm sure you'll be very surprised," I said.

The gossip grew louder as people darted their eyes between me and Emil.

"Is she kicking Emil to the curb?!"

"I mean, Emil and Bette are supposed to be practically engaged. But he didn't mention her in his acceptance speech at all. Then he hugged the actress he's rumored to be dating!"

"This new guy looks like the next internet dreamboat, y'all. Next Best Actor, anyone?"

"Bette really knows how to pick the right men, huh?"

"Uh-oh. Someone's suffering the consequences of being an idiot. If I were him, I'd have done everything I could to treasure Bette."

"Some people think they've got it all made just because they won an award. Pfft. Let's see how long he stays afloat without her."

Fans might be willfully ignorant, fiercely loyal to their chosen idols, and ready to wage a holy war for them, but people in the industry were far more pragmatic.

In Hollywood, connections were everything. Knowing the right person opened more doors than popularity ever could. And no one with half a brain and any ambition would piss off their financier.

Emil had it too good. I cultivated the connections for him, so he never had to humble himself or endure the humiliating grind of chasing roles. Eventually, he started believing his success came entirely from his own "effort."

Why was he the Best Actor at all? Hollywood was saturated with actors, many of whom were genuinely more talented than he was. Many worked harder. Plenty were even more physically attractive.

His fame and adoring fans had deluded him. He believed the fantasy they built around him. He had lost sight of reality.

"Aren't you a close friend, let's call it that for now, of Mr. Brando?" the emcee followed up, clearly hoping to stir up more drama. "Surely a friend would have prepared a congratulatory speech, right?"

The camera panned to Emil and his glowering face.

I grinned. "I'm the producer behind many of Mr. Brando's projects over the years, so yes. Of course I'm happy he made it this far. Congratulations! I hope he keeps winning awards like these every year so he can relive this moment again and again!"

Emil stared at me. Something about this felt off to him. I had arrived with a complete unknown, introduced him to the entire audience before acknowledging Emil, and only then offered my congratulations. It came across as more than a little passive-aggressive.

News of Emil's crimes quickly made headlines. This time, no amount of fan support could possibly change the narrative.…I sat among the audience during his trial. Our eyes met across the courtroom. As the officers escorted him away, he passed right by me. He glared at me and demanded, "Was this your doing?!"I smiled and lowered my voice. "You should be grateful I called the cops instead of exposing you online. Those clients you were pimping for looked powerful enough to fake your suicide to cover their own tracks, don't you think?"Emil shuddered. Fear filled his eyes.I watched him disappear with a smile. I thought I had already been more than forgiving, considering all the shit he had done to me in my last life.I thought that was the end of the whole saga until the internet uncovered Helena's side hustle as a sex worker. Suddenly, the scandal resurfaced.[One is a pimp, and the other works under a pimp. And here I thought they were sincerely in love.][She spent all this

I skimmed the statement. She was essentially claiming the exposé violated her right to privacy and that she intended to pursue legal action."Ignore her. Emil is our focus," I said.Helena's statement was nothing major, but it quickly became a rallying cry for her fans. Since I wasn't a celebrity, the combined forces of Helena's and Emil's fanbases quickly swallowed me whole in the online narrative once again.Just as Emil's fans were about to celebrate their victory, the police arrived and shattered the illusion. Several of the most extreme fans were detained for doxxing me and the people close to me, issuing threats, and expressing intent to cause harm. The rest of the fandom went berserk. This time, however, they limited their retaliation to verbal abuse online.I breathed a sigh of relief and instructed the private investigator to keep watching Emil.It didn't take him long to uncover an even darker secret.I was still figuring out the best way to expose it when an infuriate

My assistant sounded downright shaken."They found the hospital where my grandfather's recuperating and somehow took him off the respirator," another colleague added. "Luckily, my mom found out. She and the nurses had to call security to throw them out of the building!""Do you know what I found outside my house this morning? A freshly beheaded cat! What the fuck is wrong with them?!""It's his stans. They're all fucking insane. They think they're above the law because they're too young to go to prison!"My skin crawled. I had expected the attacks to come after me, just like they had in my last life. I had prepared myself for that. But this? He was dragging the people around me into his twisted campaign of revenge because he knew he could no longer get under my skin unless he hurt the people I cared about.Well, he got one thing wrong. I was no longer the Bette Colbert he could walk all over. This time, I would bring him to his knees."We're gonna call the cops!" I declared.…

Ashe looked worried.I playfully smacked him on the head. "Bro, what's with that face? If you have something you want to ask, just ask!"He chuckled."So… you and Mr. Brando don't have any kind of relationship at all?" he asked slowly, choosing his words with care.I snorted. "Didn't we publish a notice saying he's no longer a member of our agency?"He scratched his head as though he did not know how to continue, and that was when I realized what he was really asking.I looked away and lowered my voice. "No. We're strangers now. He's just a guy I used to know. I could even pretend I'd never known him.""What if he…" Ashe trailed off.Anyone with half a brain could tell Emil was not going to let me go that easily. I certainly didn't believe he would. My memories from my previous life reminded me exactly how much he would exploit me before finally discarding me.Ashe noticed my expression darken and reached for my hand. "I-I don't know how much this means to you, but if he start

"Whoa. Your shows? Sorry, when did I ever take your show?" I asked in disbelief."Those talk shows and reality TV programs he's booked for, you booked them for me back then! Those spots were supposed to be mine!"I snickered."Are you nuts? Since when were those meant for you? Who told you that? Maybe we should sit down and clear up this hilarious misunderstanding," I replied. "Or... did you actually book those shows directly with the producers, and we took your spot?"Emil's face twisted with barely restrained rage. "You're playing a very dangerous game, Bette. I don't think you can afford the consequences of losing me!"God, I almost threw up in his face. "Man, who the hell do you think you are? Losing you is like losing what I flushed down the toilet yesterday morning. Why would I cry over that?"A crowd began to gather around us. Naturally, phones and cameras were already recording.Humiliated, Emil tried to drag me away from the crowd. "Why do you always have to drag bystan

"Hello? Yes, hi. This is Ashe's friend. 75,000 dollars, you say? Perfect. I'll wire the money over in a minute. Send me the termination agreement afterward."Ashe stared at me after I ended the call.I smiled. "Oh, don't worry. You'll be making me far more than 75,000 dollars in less than a month."…Ashe's agency sent the agreement over soon enough. It had always been the kind of scummy agency that made a fortune by letting artists break their contracts and then collecting hefty penalties, so the process was surprisingly quick.I announced that Ashe had signed with my agency on Twitter, which once again stirred up the predictable outrage from Emil's stans. At the same time, several production companies had already sent scripts to my agency asking Ashe to audition.I sorted through them and picked out a handful for him to consider. When he realized every one of them was for the male lead, he froze in disbelief."Can I... Can I really audition for roles like that?"He was used
