Chapter 6

Julian's POV

The house was silent when I returned from the hospital.⁶

My wife was asleep in the passenger seat when I pulled into the driveway, exhausted, pale, but stable. I carried her inside. Helped her up the stairs and tucked her into our bed.

She barely stirred.

I stood over her for a long moment. Watched her sleep. Felt the weight of everything I'd done pressing down on my chest.

She trusted me and I'd already betrayed her.

I stayed with her for hours until I made sure she was

  • Our dirty little secret   NEW GIRL

Chapter 61Lena.The new girl showed up on the second day of classes.Lena noticed her the way people notice sudden movement at the edge of vision—dark hair cut clean at the shoulders, a confident walk, the kind of easy smile that assumed it would be returned. She was in Oliver’s year, not Lena’s, but the campus was small enough that paths crossed whether anyone wanted them to or not.Her name was Tessa.Lena learned it from the hallway traffic before lunch. Someone said it near the lockers. Someone else repeated it with the particular interest people reserved for attractive transfers. By the time Lena reached the quad, Oliver was already standing with a small group near the steps, and Tessa was beside him, head tipped slightly as she listened to whatever he was saying. She laughed once, short and genuine, and Oliver’s mouth curved in response.Something unpleasant and immediate turned over in Lena’s chest. She told herself it was nothing. Oliver was allowed to talk to people. School

  • Our dirty little secret   SCHOOL REOPENS

Chapter 60Lena.School reopened on a Monday that felt ordinary only from a distance.Lena woke to the sound of Helen in the kitchen and the low exchange of voices between her and Julian as they moved through the familiar choreography of a shared morning. For a few seconds it was possible to believe the house had stabilized. Then the rest of the previous days returned in sequence—the deadline Oliver had set, the intervention in his room, the unresolved confrontation waiting for night, the secret that still ran parallel to everything else.By breakfast the immediate crisis had not exploded, but neither had it dissolved.Oliver came downstairs dressed for campus, bag over his good shoulder, expression unreadable. He accepted coffee from Helen, answered Julian’s casual question about his first class with a short complete sentence, and avoided looking at Lena long enough to make the avoidance itself noticeable. Ava watched him over the rim of her mug with quiet attention.Helen, brighter

  • Our dirty little secret   AFER THE FUSE

Chapter 59: Lena. The house did not become safe just because Oliver had been pulled back from the edge.By the time Lena and Ava left his room, Helen and Julian were still in the garden, their voices carrying faintly through the open back windows. The terracotta pot had been placed and repositioned at least twice. Helen was talking about drainage. Julian was agreeing in the mild, married way that had returned with his memories. The ordinary sound of it felt almost violent after what had just happened upstairs.Oliver remained behind his closed door.Ava waited until they were alone in the hallway before she spoke. “That bought us hours, not days.”“I know,” Lena said.“He’s quieter now. Not calmer. There’s a difference.”Lena knew that too. The anger had been discharged, not resolved. Oliver had given in to them because the alternative in that moment was walking into the garden and detonating the family in front of Helen. That did not mean he had changed his mind about the underlying

  • Our dirty little secret   PLEASURES INSTEAD

Chapter 58Ava.Oliver’s deadline sat over the house like a held breath.Helen and Julian remained in the garden longer than expected, still arranging the terracotta pot and talking in the low, continuous way of people relearning ordinary companionship. Every minute they stayed outside was another minute the confrontation hadn’t started—and another minute Oliver spent upstairs converting patience into decision.Ava was the one who moved first. She found Lena near the kitchen doorway and spoke under her breath. “If he goes out there while Helen is standing next to Julian, this ends in the worst possible way. We stop him before he reaches the door.”Lena’s pulse was already elevated. “And then what?”Ava’s eyes held hers. “Then we give him a different outlet for what he’s carrying. Before it turns into a conversation none of us can take back.”They went upstairs together.Oliver’s door was closed but not locked. Ava knocked once and opened it without waiting for permission. Oliver stood

  • Our dirty little secret   CONSEQUENCES BEGINS

Chapter 57Lena.Morning did not bring relief. It brought clarity.Helen came downstairs first, soft-eyed and affectionate, and went straight to Julian when he appeared. She kissed him like it was the most natural thing in the world, then asked if he still wanted to go back to the nursery for the terracotta pot she had almost bought the day before. Julian smiled, said yes, and rested his hand at her waist while they discussed times. From the outside it looked like a marriage continuing to heal on schedule.Oliver entered the kitchen in the middle of that conversation and the temperature dropped without a word being exchanged. He poured coffee, declined Helen’s cheerful offer of eggs, and left for the garden with his mug before anyone could draw him into small talk. Helen watched him go with mild confusion.“He’s been quiet,” she said.Julian’s answer came easily. “He’s still adjusting. We all are.”Helen accepted that. Lena, standing at the counter, did not.Ava arrived last and read

  • Our dirty little secret   LIMITS

Chapter 56Lena.Oliver did not wait until morning.Full night had settled over the house when he appeared in Lena’s doorway. Helen and Julian had already gone to bed, their voices having faded into the quiet married rhythm that now defined the upstairs. Ava’s guest room light was off. The hallway was dark except for the thin spill of the bathroom night-light.Oliver did not knock. He stepped inside, closed the door behind him, and stood there with his back against it. For a few seconds he said nothing. The silence was worse than shouting.Lena sat up in bed. “Oliver—”“How long were you going to keep answering him?” His voice was low and controlled in the way that meant the control was expensive. “While Helen is falling asleep next to him. While she’s kissing him in the kitchen like she finally has her husband back. How long?”Lena pushed the covers back and stood. “It’s not that simple.”“It is that simple.” Oliver stepped away from the door. “He remembered. Instead of ending it, he
