LOGINAlexandra POV
It’s been two days since my encounter with the Supreme Alpha. Two whole days, and I can’t get him out of my head. I would have thought the ongoing drama surrounding my breakup and the video of me being beaten up would have occupied my mind, but I still found a way to think about Alpha Enzo.
He was from the same pack as Faye, which meant he was a human hunter too. Oh, but that day, he didn’t feel like a human hunter. He almost seemed protective and concerned about me.
I didn’t know why he would be, because he was the reason I almost didn’t make it into the shifter region. The Supreme Alpha had the power to veto those on the Supreme Council. He didn’t want a half-human abomination in his region.
I know I hated my life here sometimes, but I couldn’t imagine where I’d be if Ellis didn’t take me in. I might not have made it past my seventeenth birthday.
Now here I am. Twenty-three and almost done with a biomedical degree.
“Alex,” Professor Seren said.
She crossed her arms and tapped her one-inch black shoe on the marble floor.
I shook my head. “I’m sorry. My mind’s… elsewhere.”
“I can see that. I need you to send these leaf samples to the lab. I suspect they have a rare genetic formation that could be used to fight infections from silver cuts.”
I nodded. I picked up the tray of samples as I was about to leave, and a blonde woman stopped by the lab’s little square screen window and laughed. I swallowed hard. She was among the girls who beat me up at the Halloween party. The blood in my veins turned to ice when Faye appeared on the little window next.
Her lips curled into an evil grin.
Professor Seren followed my gaze. She sighed heavily. “Give me that. I’ll do it. I don’t want to lose these samples.”
“I’m sorry, it’s just.”
She waved her hand to stop me. “I don’t want you to be late for your meeting with the Supreme Council either.”
I coughed. “My meeting? When is that?”
Seren blinked a few times. “Didn’t Dean Kent tell you about it?”
“No, I had no idea!”
Seren shook her head. “You'd better start moving. The council aren’t people who like to be kept waiting.”
“Wait, I don’t understand why I’ve been summoned. I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“I can’t say for sure, but I think it’s about your position in your pack and the shifter region. Without a wolf, you don’t serve a purpose. You’re just taking up space.”
A huge lump formed in my throat, and I couldn’t push it down this time.
Seren walked out of the lab with her samples. Faye and her friends loitered outside the lab.
“Alex! There you are. You’re late for your meeting. The Dean asked me to tell you,” Faye smiled sweetly.
Seren beamed. “Oh, Faye was just here to help you. Nothing to be worried about.”
Faye smiled brightly at the professor. “Of course, professor.”
Seren walked off and disappeared shortly afterwards.
“I wouldn’t listen to that hippy if I were you. The supreme council doesn’t just summon anyone,” Faye spat.
“Your ass is toast,” another girl retorted.
“I’m sure it’s nothing. Just a general assessment,” I said, trying to keep my cool.
The four girls laughed. “I won’t be surprised if this is the last time we see you,” Faye added.
I worried about the same thing as I rushed to the Ember Hall. The smallest and discreet hall the university had. What if they kicked me out? Where would I go? I had no one in the outside world. The shifter region was all I’d known.
When I arrived at Ember Hall, the last council member took their seat, and it was my godmother.
I was dead meat.
“This is a very important meeting, and you’re late!” The spokesperson, Beta Denise, snapped.
“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.”
I sat on the chair set out for me in front of the eight council members. Every pack had a representative or two in the supreme council. Heat rushed to my cheeks when I locked eyes with my ex, Xavier.
What is he doing here?
Heat travelled to my groin when I noticed Alpha Enzo.
I couldn’t believe he was here, and he was looking straight at me!
“We don’t have time to waste. You’ve been in this pack for over six years, Alexandra and your wolf hasn’t shown up!” Denise snapped.
“She has no wolf. Bringing her into the pack was a mistake, a stupid risk brought on by Ellis,” a man with white hair yelled.
“She has a wolf! It’s going to appear soon,” my godmother argued.
“Silence,” Alpha Enzo said.
He didn’t raise his voice above the others, but it was enough to quiet the room and send tremors down my spine.
“How old are you, Alexandra?” Enzo asked.
“Twenty-three,” I replied.
He pressed his lips together, but offered no further statement.
“Too old for a wolf. Her wolf’s not coming. She’s just a useless human. Throw her back to the human world and let’s forget we ever made this unfortunate mistake!”
A chorus of agreement rang out. I felt like an ant in front of them. I didn’t know how to plead my case. Hope was all I had to cling to, and that’s not what anyone wanted to hear.
“I just need more time. Something might happen,” I said.
Xavier chuckled. “Pathetic. Your wolf’s not going to show up because you don’t have one. You don’t belong here.”
My blood boiled. His face was enough to provoke my anger.
“Sometimes half-humans are late bloomers!”
“Not this late, honey. You’re practically an old maid,” Xavier laughed.
“Enough!” Enzo roared.
He shot to his feet, and his eyes flowed with a deep red colour.
The room was forced into silence.
“She’s not leaving the pack,” Enzo declared.
I gasped as did everyone else in the room.
“You’re being unreasonable, Enzo,” Xavier said. “She’s a threat to the packs!”
Enzo growled. “What threat could a little wolfless woman be? Are you that pathetic?”
Xavier stood too, and suddenly the tension skyrocketed. The room quieted. Everyone watched them, scared to see punches and too scared to take their eyes off them including me.
Xavier pointed at me. “She has no place in this pack. Humans and wolves had lived apart for hundreds of years. That shouldn’t change now.”
“I’ll give her until the next full moon to get her wolf. If she doesn’t shift, then she’s out.”
A flurry of disagreement and rage filled the hall. Everyone spoke above each other it was hard to hear what each person said.
“I don’t want to hear it! Alexandra has until the next full moon to shift. You are all dismissed.”
Alex POV“She’s still not waking up, Celia. What are we going to do?”“Stop panicking, Serenity, just keep going.”“Oh, the moon goddess is going to destroy us all, and we deserve it.”Water rolled down my face and back, drenching my clothes. I opened my eyes and immediately blinked to fight off the water coming into my eyes.I coughed. “What are you doing?”“Oh, she’s awake. Thank goodness, I was getting scared,” Serenity said, her voice still filled with worry.“Why am I wet?” My attempt to sit up was met with a spinning head and aching bones. I sat back down on something soft, but damp too.“You passed out,” Celia said.I looked up. I was sitting on her lap. “Gosh…”I dragged my body up, but Celia put a hand on my shoulder and pushed me down. “Don’t move, please. You’re weak.”“I’m fine,” I mumbled. It was a lie. I feel awful! My mouth was dry, my eyes stung, and my body felt like jelly. I looked around the room. We were missing three she-wolves.“Where’s everyone else?” I asked.“
Alexandra POV“How!” I exclaimed. “You can’t be here! Are you sure you’re Celia? Wait, you shouldn’t even be able to answer me because you took a vow of solitude! You’re not supposed to be here. You’re not my mother. There’s a mistake.”The woman with a messy bun groaned.“This is surreal. I just met my father, and I met my mother on the same night. I’m dreaming. Scott must have knocked me out.”The other women mumbled something inaudible.Serenity pouted at me, her eyes softened, and her brows knitted together. “Celia did take a vow of solitude and celibacy. She lived out a secluded section of the abbey, but she was forced to break her vow when Scott kidnapped us two weeks ago.”“Two weeks?” My jaw dropped. “You’ve been here this whole time?”Serenity nodded. “There were a total of a hundred and fifty goddess representatives at the abbey. Many of them managed to get away.”“Others were killed…” the woman with pale eyes said.I exhaled deeply. “How did he know about the abbey?”“All S
Alexandra POVI slapped my arms over my breasts. Scott looked over the passenger seat into the back of the SUV and grinned.“I always thought you were worth dying for, Alexandra. Seeing you naked only fuels my fantasies.”“Pervert!” I shouted.“I didn’t ask you to shift and try to fight me.”Scott turned to the driver. “Step on it.”“Blanca, can you reach Enzo?” I asked my wolf. She whimpered. “I can’t, Alex. I don’t have enough strength, and he’s too far.”Crap. I’m alone in this until Blanca recovers.“Where are you taking me!?” I demanded.“A place where you’ll be perfectly hidden with your friends.”“Friends?”He chuckled. “Annoying friends, but they are necessary for my plans.”“Forget about the Mystic Pack, Scott. The old pack was divided up among the Shifter Region pack.”“I know that! That’s all your fault. You killed Alec.”I swallowed. He slammed his fists on the headboard and violently jumped on the seat.“Alec wasn’t going to give you anything tangible.”He snorted. “You d
Enzo POVThe human girl and I stumbled onto a horrific scene. I knew it would be bad miles before we reached the settlement. I almost wanted to tell her to brace herself, but I held back.“No…” Sue whispered. “How could this happen?” Her voice cracked.Men threw buckets of water onto burning tents. Women hauled buckets out of a broken well. Burnt marks stained the forest floor, the leaves turned to char and ash, but that wasn’t the worst part. The undeniable scent of blood in the earth was.“Fuck…” I muttered.Among the smells of fire and earth, I couldn’t smell my mate.“Sam!” Sue called. “What the hell happened here?”I followed Sue over to Sam. I remembered Sam. He tried to hack my mate to pieces. My wolf was already on edge, but after seeing Sam my wolf was high alert.Sam and I locked eyes. I just wanted my mate and to leave this place.“Where’s my mate?” I demanded.“They took her!” Sam exclaimed.“Who the fuck is they? If you weren’t my biggest problem who the hell is he?”Sam
Emmie POV“I don’t know why I let you talk me into this,” Susette groaned.“Now, Susette, just a little further.”She paused and glared at me. “Call me Susette one more time, Emmieline.”I rolled my eyes and continued digging. Susette was supposed to be watching me, but after a couple of minutes, we got to talking. Turns out humans aren’t so bad.She realised that not all werewolves were especially the small ones like me, who were known for being nurturing and kind.I told her why Alex and I were out here in the first place, and she offered to help me find the body that Alex insisted was buried out here.We were up to our waists in the hole, but no sign of the smoking gun. I could smell it. It was down here, blending with the earth. I had to find it before the earth reclaimed whatever was left.“There!” Sue shouted. “A skull.”My blood ran cold.“It looks human,” Sue said.I shook my head, tears stinging my eyes. “It’s not. I can tell by the scent.”“The skeleton’s been here for a lon
Alexandra POV“She’s waking up.”“She better not die on us,” a man grumbled.“Sam!”My eyes opened, and my dry lips parted. Darkness reached every corner of the tent. How long had I been here? Enzo’s probably losing his mind, and Emmie… Gosh, I left my best friend alone with a murderous human.I started to sit up immediately. How had I been so reckless?“Whoa, where are you off to? You fainted?” A woman asked me.I could barely make out her features in the dark, just her green eyes that shone like marbles.“Sam, can you get another lamp, please?”Sam grumbled, but complied.“Sam told me your name’s Alexandra,” Paige said. “I’m Paige…”My breathing was heavy, and my limbs trembled from the cold.“I need to go home. My mate… my husband must be searching for me.”“Oh, I understand. You helped us a lot. You saved my life,” Paige whispered. “They told me why you did it. You think we’re sisters, right?”I nodded slowly. “Yeah… I’ve never known my human family.”“It’s a running joke that my
Alexandra POVDr Zaya made me drink the gross substance anyway. It helped to reduce the pain, but the dull ache was still there. Enzo moved me to his bedroom while he spoke to Cindi, Alex and Dr Zaya. All I’d wanted since I got to the Onyx pack was a warm bed and my mate beside me. Now I couldn’t e
Alexandra POVDarkness fell on another day. Alec caught me off guard by knocking me out with his Alpha power, but it got rid of the pain I felt. Ellis still hadn’t come home yet. She always stopped by my room to make sure I was still being held captive. We didn’t say much to each other these days.
Alexandra POVI yanked him inside. I looked around for the guards, but the surroundings were clear. Where had they all gone?It didn’t matter. I closed the door and locked it.“How did you get past the guards?”“A diversion,” Alec grinned.“You can’t be here! Ellis has this place heavily guarded. T
Alexandra POV“You’ve been keeping a lot of things from me, Alexandra. I thought we were closer than this.”“Just leave me alone.”“You’re not a teenager anymore. We can talk freely.”I was in my old room again, feeling like a teenager. I couldn’t believe she’d taken things this far. On the drive h
