Chapter 6

Slope
Anna was the spare in the family and treated as nonexistent at school.

But this boy—whom she felt worried to even admire—protected her when she was at her most vulnerable, letting her keep what little crumbling self-worth she had left.

That glimmer of light that was offered became the flame.

And like a moth, she was inevitably drawn to it.

She hence studied with as much desperation as diligence, barely managing to get into the same university as him.

He remained an overachiever, and was immediately appointed the youngest head researcher at the research center after graduation.

She submitted her resume to the institute too, giving up any better prospects just to stay beside him.

"Anna?"

Neil's voice pulled her back to reality.

The infirmary doctor was cleaning her wounds, and Neil stood nearby, his tone indifferent, "You should deal with your family quickly. Don't let it affect work."

These words were like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing the small flame that had risen in Anna's heart when he protected her.

That protection was offered not for her sake, but because it affected his work.

"Yeah," she murmured softly, her eyes downcast.

After his wound was treated, Neil glanced at the time. "There's a gathering tonight, let's go together."

-

It was a lively gathering, and the conversation naturally revolved around their recent academic breakthrough.

Josie was sitting next to Neil, excitedly recounting her experiences at the summit.

Her father, Professor York, was grinning as he watched his most prized student with his daughter.

His gaze kept darting between Neil and Josie, and he eventually smiled, "So, Neil… I heard you and Jo showed perfect teamwork. With your composure and her sense for initiatives, you both complement each other professionally and emotionally. You're not going to get younger either—you can't just focus completely on your work. I know Jo can behave like a kid at times, but her heart's always in the right place…"

"Dad!" Josie pouted disapprovingly, but she was blushing and her eyes remained glued to Neil, brimming with expectation.

Professor York's intention couldn't be clearer, and those around the table who knew about Neil's engagement with Anna kept quiet, only glancing at Anna subtly on occasion.

But Anna simply sat there, her eyes fixed on her cup of tea.

Neil was silent for a few beats until he spoke, his tone as calm as ever: "Thank you for your concern, Professor. However, my current focus is still on my project, and I don't have the time for anything else."

As soon as he finished, the blush on Josie's face vanished instantly as she turned deathly pale and stared at Neil in disbelief.

Soon, tears welled up in her eyes as she leaped to her feet and dashed out of the banquet room.

"Jo!" Professor York called out.

Neil watched her leave with a small frown, and eventually got up too. "I'll talk to her, professor."

An awkward silence filled the banquet room, with Mrs. Swan eventually leaning toward Anna and whispering, "Should I tell the professor? I mean, Neil didn't mention your engagement?"

Anna shook her head, "Nope."

If Neil didn't care to acknowledge their engagement, only for someone else to mention it? Everyone else would just treat it like a joke.

After sitting in silence for a few minutes, her stomach felt queasy too and she whispered to Mrs. Swan, "I need the ladies' room."

As she left the banquet room, she didn't go to the ladies' room, instead heading to the quiet courtyard behind the hotel.

The cool evening breeze blew away any cabin fever and the alcoholic fumes lingering on her, but that was when she saw them—under the tree not far away.

Josie stood with her back to her, her entire body buried in Neil's arms.

She was sobbing intermittently, "Why not me?! I love you, Neil! I know I look immature, and talk a lot unlike Anna, but I can change! What she can do, I can do better!"

Neil didn't reciprocate the embrace, but his tolerance spoke volumes.

Anna recalled the few times she tried to touch him, only for him to respond with unmistakable avoidance.

Just then, Neil seemed to notice and looked up to see Anna watching them impassive and calmly meeting his gaze.

As if they were just doing a soap opera routine, and she was a silent spectator.

If there was a reaction, it was her own nails digging deeply into her palms at her sides.

Neil's eyes twitched ever so slightly as if it were an illusion.

Meanwhile, Josie was still too caught in her own sadness to look up. "I know you better than she does, and I know better how to make you smile…"

Anna didn't linger any longer. She turned and walked away.

When she returned to the private room, she excused herself early, saying she wasn't feeling well.

Mrs. Swan looked at her with concern, but in the end, she said nothing.

Anna walked back to the staff quarters alone. The ashes in her heart seemed to scatter with the wind, leaving behind nothing but an empty hollow.

After she washed up and was ready to sleep, she heard the knock on her door, and answered it to see Neil standing under the dim hallway lights.

When Anna opened the door, Neil was staring blankly out the window, his profile gaunt and pale in the morning light. "Sit," he rasped, gesturing at the chair beside his bed. A moment of silence followed, the rustling of the poplar trees in the desert breeze audible from outside. "After that kidnapping, I kept dreaming of you lying in a pool of blood," Neil suddenly said. "I'd sit up awake, and could only breathe again when I saw you sleeping peacefully next to me." Anna raised a brow—that was the first time she had ever heard of this. So there were actual insecurities under that cold, hard exterior? Turning to hold her gaze, Neil then continued, "Unfortunately for me, I was just too dumb. I thought just keeping you around was enough to make up for everything." Anna handed him a glass of warm water. "That's all in the past now." Neil took the glass, his fingertips tracing the rim. "The thesis… I submitted a revised version, with you as the sole author." "It doesn't mat

Neil's voice was soft from blood loss. "Why did you save me?"Carl helped him into his car, and turned to smile at Anna as he answered quietly, "I won't let Anna owe you one."Seeing Carl's bleeding arm and Neil, deathly pale as he lay in the car, Anna quietly got in, riding shotgun. The car was dead silent on the way to the hospital—Carl was focused on driving, while Anna saw Neil close his eyes through the rearview mirror. While the doctors tended to Neil's injury, she waited outside in the hallway.Carl was looking at her, leaning on the opposite wall.Anna went to get a medical kit. "Let me help you with that."Carl withdrew his hand but soon obediently held it out, wincing as she applied iodine to the injury."Does it hurt?" Anna asked, trying to be gentle.Carl shook his head, his eyes still glued to her face. After she disinfected the cut and packed the kit, he suddenly asked softly, "Anna, if you changed your mind, I can—"Anna laughed, seeing how worried he was and

The convoy left punctually at 6 am the next day.Carl leaped off his vehicle, shoving a steaming hot pocket into her palms. "Eat while it's hot. It's a bumpy ride."Along the way, Carl told her about the geological structures, reaching for her map to further illustrate her points when he got excited. His palms were warm, and Anna would blush as she withdrew from his touch.Arriving for the afternoon expedition, Carl helped her put on the safety harness, his breath brushing against her ear, "I know the place. Stay close."Neil wanted to join them, but the team leader had him explore the other side.During their break, Carl pulled out a container of fruit from his backpack."Fresh vitamins are a luxury out here in the desert."He speared a piece of honey with a fruit fork and held it up to Anna's lips, his eyes sparkling with expectation. After a brief hesitation, she lowered her head and took a bite.Neil's grip on his water bottle tightened. He walked over, his voice straine

Carl threw his hands up in resignation. "Stop! I'm just a geological surveyor."Then, he paused, his voice quieter with embarrassment. "Also... did I accidentally let something slip just now?"Anna paused, her eyes twinkling in the dark. "You mean how you were aware of Neil's kidnapping?"Carl gulped, but he nodded with much determination. "Yes, I knew about you and him even before you came—that you're the youngest engineer at Central but volunteered to come here."I didn't understand why, so I checked out of curiosity… And let's just say I was a little opinionated until I saw you in the sandstorm. The wind was level seven and visibility was thirty feet at best, but you shielded the specimen bag with such determination."Anna lowered her gaze at the calluses on her fingers—traces of working outdoors. She then remembered how Carl was always around when she felt like she would be overwhelmed, bringing her bottles of water or was just 'passing by' to help her carry crates of heavy e

During the weekend evening, the branch research staff had dinner together at the mess hall. It was a lively occasion with all the seniors breaking out their personal brews.Carl was playing drinking games with them and laughing heartily, though he would glance over at Anna on occasion to see her quietly eating, only occasionally speaking when spoken too.Eventually, Madam King came over. "Come on, Ms. Stark! Don't just sit there—drink up!"Anna was going to refuse when Carl breezed over, smiling, "Spare her, woman. We still have an expedition to make, and she needs her head to be clear to process what she finds. Here, I'll drink in her stead!"Everyone cheered as he quickly took a large swig.He then winked at Anna, leaving her giggling. On the other table, Neil's knuckles clenched and paled as he watched.Carl's dazzling nature was like a fire that magnified Neil's own coldness and clumsiness. He chugged his own alcohol, and ended up with a burning throat. After the dinner, A

In the afternoon, Carl took Anna out on a ride, his fingers tapping on the steering wheel while playing country songs on the radio."Over there," he pointed outside the window. "Doesn't that look like the back of a whale? Wind and rain are truly Nature's best sculptors. And despite that look now, it was the bottom of a lake millions of years ago—a reminder that everything changes."Ann turned to look at the earthen mounds and gullies, eroded by wind and rain into red rocky formations. As they stopped by a slope, Carl briskly took out his toolbox and water bottles, leading her uphill and pointing at the rocky surface, picking up and handing her a helix fossil. "Each layer of stone has a tale. That's why the Earth itself is a record of the changing of climates. Our feelings are basically fleeting in the passage of time… So however terrible you may feel now, just come out to the wild. You'll feel a lot better."Anna was quiet as she held the fossil, but she could feel her stiff shoul
