Chapter 4

作者: Jellyfish
Nancy began coughing up blood in the middle of the night.

All of the lights in the courtyard were lit up.

The elders of the Yore family, Edward, and Olivia surrounded Nancy as she lay on the bed.

I saw "Balms for Blindness" open on the table when they summoned me to her room. One of the pages had been circled with red ink.

Edward wiped his forehead and said, "The medicine that Ms. Jennings took didn't match the prescription. She wouldn't have vomited blood if the dosage hadn't been changed."

William's mother, Isabella Wright, looked at me and said, "The book belongs to you, Julia. Please explain yourself."

I walked over to the table and placed my finger next to the circle of red ink, saying, "Three and a half scoops were changed to seven scoops."

I looked up before continuing, "Interrogate Nancy's personal maid."

Nancy pressed a hand to her mouth as she lay on the bed. "I know that you dislike me, Julia, but Holly would never do such a thing."

She gripped the edge of the bed and pushed herself upright before continuing, "Interrogate me if you insist on interrogating someone. I don't mind enduring some hardship if I can prove Julia's innocence."

No one in the room said a word.

Olivia stepped forward and said, "Ms. Jennings is in bad shape, Ms. Julia. Saving her should be the priority."

"Do you also think that there's no need to investigate what happened?" I asked, looking at William.

William stood next to Nancy's bed. His hands curled into tight fists before he said, "Save her first."

"I won't touch the prescription until we get to the bottom of this," I said.

"Don't be stubborn, Julia," William snapped, looking at me.

"The book was tampered with, and yet you're accusing me of being stubborn," I retorted with a smile.

Nancy coughed out blood again.

William tightened his fists and said, "Save her according to the modified prescription."

"You want me to use the prescription that was tampered with to save her?" I asked.

"You know the properties of the medicinal herbs better than anyone else."

"If she lives, I would have saved her out of guilt. If she dies, I would have caused her death."

"I'll take responsibility."

"You can't."

No one in the room tried to change my mind again.

"You can't take responsibility for the Camerson family's reputation," I said while looking at him. "You also can't take responsibility for the past three years that I spent on you."

William looked away.

Nancy dabbed the corners of her eyes and said, "Don't force Julia, Will. If I don't survive the night, I'll accept it as my fate. I'm just worried that Julia will hate herself in the future."

"Nancy's life is on the line, Julia," Isabella said. "You're the lady of the Yore family. You can't be so stubborn."

I looked at the other Yores. None of them were looking at the book.

I reached out to grab "Balm for Blindness", but William pressed his palm to the page and refused to budge.

"Remove your hand," I said.

"Just because I couldn't see for the last three years doesn't mean that I'm clueless. The way you took care of me was to ensure that I would never leave you."

I leaned against the desk.

From William's perspective, I only read his official documents, tested medicine on myself, and tested roads because I didn't want him to leave me.

I pulled out my seal and travel pass and said, "I'm leaving today, William."

"Don't threaten me by leaving," William retorted, staring at the pass.

I circled him and headed outside, but William grabbed my hand and dragged me toward the medicine room.

I crashed against the desk and only regained my footing by bracing myself against it.

"Lock the doors!" he ordered, and the guards immediately blocked the exit.

He then stared at me, his eyes cold and dark. "You can forget about leaving Yore Manor if anything happens to Nancy tonight."

I didn't say a single word for a long time as I leaned against the desk.

Nancy looked down and forced the corners of her lips to stay down.

I let go of the desk and straightened my clothes. I then looked down and placed my seal, half of my emerald hairpin, and a bloodstained ribbon into the medicine box's secret compartment.

The medicine room was engulfed by flames in the middle of the night.

Amid the chaos, I grabbed the medicine box and sprinted to the backyard. I was already standing on the edge of the snowy cliff by the time the guards caught up to me.

The freezing waters rushed along the raging river below the cliff.

When dawn finally broke, the guards only managed to find my bloodied clothes and broken hairpin.

"Bad news! Ms. Julia has gone missing!"

The cup slipped from William's fingers.

An old household staff member, James Daniels, was shaking when he offered the medicine box to William.

There was a single sheet of paper in the secret compartment.

The color drained from William's face as he read the words. A metallic taste surged up his throat before he spat out a mouthful of blood on the spot.

William stumbled backward, his boots splashing muddy water everywhere."I wanted Will to believe that you were ruthless," Nancy choked out. "I wanted him to think that I'm the only one who didn't force him to do anything. I never planned to actually send you to your death."I didn't interrupt her."Were you the one who ordered Holly to buy the red ink?""Yes.""Were you the one who switched the dosage of the medicine?""Yes.""Did you take something to make yourself vomit blood that night?"Nancy bit her lip.I stared at her. "Answer my question."Nancy closed her eyes and answered, "Yes."The onlookers began to criticize her."How despicable!""She ruined Dr. Juleson's reputation, and now she has the nerve to beg for help. How shameless.""Her heart is rotten to the core!"Nancy covered her ears and shrieked. "I just wanted to live! I saved Will. He's obliged to protect me!"William suddenly walked to my side. He ignored Nancy as he faced me and slowly sank to his knee

One rainy day, I heard a set of footsteps stop outside the door when I was testing a child's sensitivity toward light and securing a veil around his eyes.I looked up and saw William standing in the rain. His clothes hung loosely on his frame. Rain dripped from the tips of his hair and soaked into his collar.William stood outside the door and didn't come in. He didn't call out to me either. He simply stood rooted to the spot and watched me wrap the veil around the child's eyes."Who's that, Dr. Juleson?" the child asked.I washed my hands and answered, "A patient."William's mouth fell open, but he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue.I approached the entrance of the clinic."Are you here for a diagnosis, Mr. Yore? Or are you here to catch your wife who ran away from you?" I asked.William tightened his grip around a torn page. "Julia…""There's no Julia here," I said while looking at him. "There's only Carmen Juleson.""I understand," he mumbled in a low

William looked at Nancy. "Funeral preparations?" he asked.Tears clung to Nancy's lashes as she looked up. "Julia misunderstood me before she passed away. I was thinking that I could atone by taking charge of her funeral preparations."Olivia sighed and said, "You're so thoughtful, Ms. Jennings."The corners of William's lips pulled down into a frown. His eyes were completely devoid of mirth."Bring the account books."Nancy was briefly stunned. One of the household staff members entered the front hall, carrying a stack of account books with her.William flipped one open and said, "Nancy Jennings has spent 1,300 dollars on medicinal herbs and 670 dollars on clothes and accessories after joining Yore Manor three years ago. "Her purchased items include a premium bed with down bedding, silver accessories, and pearl jewelry. All items were paid for with Mrs. Yore's dowry."Nancy curled her hands into fists as she braced herself against the floor.William looked up and said, "You

I was on a cargo ship that was heading south when I regained consciousness. The boatwoman informed me that I had been unconscious for two days."You're quite lucky that you managed to grab onto a withered tree under the cliff, miss. You would have been swept away by the river a long time ago if you didn't."I raised my hand and brushed my fingers against my hair. The emerald hairpin had snapped, and I had left my bloody shirt under the cliff.Julia Camerson had died that night.I changed my name to Carmen Juleson.A snowstorm had blocked off the mountain path when the boat reached the south border. The dilapidated church on the outskirts of the city was packed with blind children and injured soldiers.I set up a medical tent at the church and treated their eyes.Someone asked me where I came from."The north," I said."Do you have any family left?""No," I answered as I prepared the medicine.…Meanwhile, in the north, nobody in Yore Manor dared to raise their voice when

I had written a single sentence on the note. "I won't be your eyes anymore, William."William gripped the note tightly.James sank to his knees and exclaimed, "Mr. Yore!"William didn't look up. Instead, he flipped through the stack of medicine test records."March 7th: Ingested Sagevine. Experienced aching eyes, tinnitus, and slight tremors in the right hand."March 19th: Tried Ivoryroot. Vomited in the middle of the night. Kept it hidden."April 3rd: The light has returned to William's eyes. He didn't give me an answer when I questioned him. I'll wait for him to tell me."William crumpled the paper as he stared at the last sentence. He suddenly recalled how I had stopped reading the official document that day even though I was only halfway done."Why did you stop?" he'd asked."The light's too dim," I'd replied with a smile. The papers crumpled under his tightening grip."She already knew…" he whispered."Ms. Julia said that she'll believe you if you were willing to tel
