Chapter 2

Author: Summer Sway
Sure enough, it took less than half an hour before Zachary, who claimed he had an urgent meeting, rushed home.

Ruby dashed down the stairs to greet him the moment she heard him, her voice sweet and eager. "Zach, you're back?"

Completely ignoring the displeasure on my face, Zachary smiled indulgently at her. "Ruby, go pick any room you like to settle in. If you need anything, just let me know."

His expression shifted when he looked at me sitting on the sofa, unmoved. His face darkened, and he strode over immediately.

Ruby, still glued to his side, pouted dramatically. "Zach, your maid doesn't seem to know how to do her job. Shouldn't she be helping when the master of the house comes home?"

Zachary grabbed my arm roughly and pulled me up. "Allison Gray! What the hell did you do?!"

I crossed my arms and smirked at him. "What did I do? I just made sure everyone knows about your new girlfriend. Wouldn't want people coming over and not knowing what to call her."

I glanced at the family group chat on my phone, seeing over 99 unread messages. The chaos I'd caused had stirred up quite a lively discussion. It had been a while since the group was this active.

Zachary snatched my phone from my hand. "Hurry up and explain to everyone. Tell them it's just a misunderstanding."

I let out a laugh. "Explain what? She said it herself. She said she wants to sleep with you."

Ruby, who had finally realized what was happening, stared at me in shock. Her face turned a sickly white, then red with embarrassment, her voice trembling as she stammered, "Zach... No, Allison... I'm really sorry, I didn't know you were..."

She sniffled and whimpered. "Allison, I was just joking! You wouldn't take it seriously, would you?"

I slowly sat back down, crossing my legs with deliberate nonchalance. "Don't act like you wouldn't have barged in here even if you knew I was Zach's fiancée.

"And one more thing—let me give you some advice: drop the act."

Seeing her tears start to fall, Zachary quickly pulled her into his arms and glared at me. "Al, can you not be so petty?! My mentor just passed away. His dying wish was for me to take care of Ruby!

"The house has always been quiet anyway. What's wrong with having one more person around to keep you company?"

His brows furrowed deeply, as if I were a stubborn child throwing a tantrum over nothing.

His self-righteous tone made me laugh out loud. "Quiet? There's Maria, Yolanda, George—Our servants are always here! Or are you blind?"

Ruby continued sobbing, her face a picture of delicate fragility. "If Allison doesn't want me here, I'll leave. I don't want to cause trouble..."

I immediately stood up, opened the front door, and gestured outward. "Then leave. And don't let me catch you going back on your word."

Her face went pale again, but this time, she didn't dare move a muscle.

Seeing this, Zachary sighed and stepped outside to grab her suitcase, dragging it back in. "Al, you have to understand... My mentor was really good to me. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have even graduated from university. Ruby's just a lonely girl with no one to rely on. How can I turn my back on her?"

I crossed my arms and watched him with an amused expression. "What are you implying? Your mentor was good to you, so you should be the one to repay him. Why drag me into it?"

Zachary opened his mouth to say something, but I cut him off. "Oh, did your mentor forget to teach you to respect your wife? Just how to take care of your mistress?"

"Allison!" Zachary slammed his hand down on the table, furious. "Don't go too far! If you can't accept this, then move out!"

I frowned, my expression darker than the wrinkled bedspread Ruby had just been lounging on.

Fine.

I don't need the bed. I don't need the fiancé, either.

Nodding to myself, I glanced at my watch. "It's only a little past three. If you start now, you can probably be moved out by nine."

I pulled out my phone and called a moving company. Then, I turned to Zachary with a smile. "I've already booked a moving service for you. What are you standing there for? Start packing!"

On the day of Ruby's trial, as I passed by the courthouse's back entrance, I heard a familiar voice. It was Zachary."Ruby, I can't help you this time. You shouldn't have gotten involved," his voice sounded worn and weary."Zach! How can you say that, after all that my father had done for you in the past?" Ruby's tone was sharp, laced with disbelief. "What did you promise my dad?"Zachary's tone turned icy. "I've done all I could to help you—letting you stay with me and even work in the hospital."He paused, his voice steady but firm. "You simply shouldn't covet what isn't yours.""What?" Ruby's voice rose an octave in anger. "Are you saying it's been a one-sided love all along?"Suddenly, her voice softened, tinged with a hint of tears. "That night, you told me you loved me!"I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh; I had anticipated this confrontation long before.Just then, my father approached from behind me. His complexion was pallid, and his gait unsteady. He looked clea

The news of William's death spread like wildfire through the hospital. And soon, the police were involved.Zachary, Dr. Meyers, Ruby, and I were brought into a stark interrogation room at the police station.Dr. Meyers appeared frail, her face pale, trembling hands betraying her fragile state. She spoke in halting fragments, struggling to piece together the horrifying events. "I... I was extracting William's tooth. He... he was so frightened, and struggled against me. I... I was afraid he might hurt himself, so... I called Ruby in to help…"Her voice trailed off, a shadow crossing her face as she glanced nervously between Zachary and me. I leaned forward, urgency coursing through me. "And then? What happened next?""I… Uh... I just had Ruby hold him down…" Dr. Meyers's words grew softer, her gaze falling to the floor.Ruby, her complexion ghostly, added in a whisper, "I... I just held his shoulders to keep him from moving…""And then?" The police officer turned his attention to

I could hardly believe the absurdity of her words, a mix of anger and disbelief bubbling within me. "A small matter? Someone's life is on the line! Is that still what you consider small?!"Dr. Meyers fell silent, rendered speechless by my outburst. All she could do was cry and mutter apologies, but I didn't have the luxury of time to entertain her remorse. My focus needed to be solely on saving this child's life.Drawing in a deep breath, I forced myself to calm down, returning to William's side as I continued the life-saving compressions: one, two, three… Each second felt like an eternity. My forehead slick with sweat, I pressed on, yet with each passing moment, the boy's lack of response weighed heavily on my heart.Suddenly, the sharp wail of a siren broke through the tension. The ambulance had finally arrived. A team of medical personnel rushed into the treatment room, moving with frantic efficiency as they hoisted William onto a stretcher.Yet, as one of the doctors perfor

In a panic, my hand fumbled across the surface of my desk until my fingers landed on the office phone. Without thinking, I pressed the speed dial to the front desk and hit the speakerphone."Hello, this is the front desk," came Ruby's voice from the other end.The moment Zachary heard her voice, his body visibly tensed before he slowly loosened his grip on me. I took the opportunity to free myself from his arms, snatching up the phone as I coldly spat into the receiver, "Ruby, kindly escort the deputy director out of my office. And from now on, he's not allowed to step foot in here without my permission."Without waiting for a response, I slammed the phone down and, without a glance at Zachary, marched over to the door and flung it open. "Get out," I said icily.Zachary's face darkened with fury, but he didn't say a word. He shot me one last hard look before turning on his heel and left. For the next few days, I threw myself completely into preparing for the national dental re

After that, Ruby started posting subtle but obvious hints about Zachary on her social media.Dr. Tricia Meyers, from my department, practically treated their rumored relationship like a guilty pleasure. Her eyes lit up with excitement as she said, "Al, look! Ruby posted on her Instagram again."I glanced at the screen. There it was—the passenger seat of Zachary's car, his jacket tossed casually in the background. Dr. Meyers couldn't contain her delight as she gushed, "She's sitting in the front seat of Mr. Dawson's car, isn't she? And look! That's his jacket! It's so obvious! How sweet!"I gave it a passing glance. Zachary had already liked the post—first one to do so, no less.It seemed Ruby wasn't satisfied without my acknowledgment. She had the audacity to post another selfie in the hospital staff's group chat.In the photo, she wore a bright, beaming smile, but what stood out most wasn't her expression—it was Zachary's unmistakable profile reflected in the full-length mirror b

After that incident, my father summoned me for a scolding, "Al, you and Zachary have been together for ten years. Do you really think he's that kind of person? Could it be a misunderstanding?"Recalling the way Zachary looked at Ruby and my gut feeling, I shot back without hesitation, "Dad, men just get tired, that's all."My father sighed in frustration, "I know Zachary well enough. He's steady and wouldn't do something so brainless!"My mother chimed in from the side, "Exactly, dear. You know, she's the daughter of his mentor. Maybe it really is just a way of repaying a favor."*How could I have not seen this coming?Zachary had been living with us for almost ten years. My parents were soft-hearted and could have bonded with any stray cat or dog after that much time, let alone a human! And Zachary, with his growing reputation in the dental field, had long been treated as half a son by them.Fine. I would let them see Zachary's true colors for themselves! It seemed Zachary ha

Zachary stood there, stunned, as if he hadn't expected me to actually mean it. He grabbed my arm again, his tone almost pleading. "Al, don't do this. I'm just trying to repay my mentor's kindness, that's all—""Kindness?" I yanked my arm from his grip, my voice dripping with contempt. "Do you think

I had been in a relationship with Zachary Dawson for seven years and engaged for three when, out of the blue, Ruby White, the daughter of his mentor, moved into our home.Sitting casually on the bed that Zachary and I shared, Ruby lounged with an air of nonchalance, her voice playful and teasing.
