Mag-log inJanessa's POV
Walking into Brayden’s private condo was like stepping into an entirely different world.
I thought the campus area only had rowdy frat houses and cramped apartments like Caleb’s, but this place was super expensive. It was a massive loft with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the city lights. The condo had sleek matte-black counters and polished concrete floors, and it was spotless, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and laundry detergent.
On the far wall, a huge glass case held his hockey jersey, a sleek black stick, and a captain’s letter on the chest. Brayden wasn't just some college student getting by; he was the university's hockey captain, and clearly, he lived by different rules than his brothers.
He tossed my suitcase onto the floor near the entryway without any gentleness. "Rule number one," he started, leaning against the kitchen island with his arms crossed. "Don't touch my stuff. Rule number two, don't bring any of Caleb's trashy friends over here. And rule number three, stay out of my way."
I blinked, still shivering from the outside air. "Wow. Nice to meet you too, Brayden. Thanks for the warm welcome."
He let out a dry, humorless laugh that made my skin prickle. "I didn't invite you here for a pajama party, Janessa," he said. "I'm doing myself a favor so my mother doesn't flash me a red card for the umpteenth time this year. Frankly, I think the fact that you packed up your entire life and flew across the country without a solid roof over your head is completely stupid."
"I had a plan!" I snapped, my voice rising. "Trevor said Caleb’s apartment was fine. He told me it was all handled."
"And you actually believed him?" Brayden tilted his head, his dark eyes boring straight into mine. His gaze was intense, like he was stripping away every defense I had. "Jesus, you really are as naive as he is. Trevor lives in a fantasy world, and clearly, he’s dragged you right into it with him."
"Don't talk about him like that," I said, stepping forward even though I wanted to back away from how scary he was. "Trevor is a good guy, and he cares about me. Our relationship is built on actual respect, not whatever gross, temporary stuff Caleb and the rest of this campus are doing."
Brayden smirked, but there was no warmth in it. He took a slow step toward me, towering over me in the middle of his expensive kitchen. "Respect? Is that what you call it? Please. Your entire relationship with my brother is a joke."
"It is not a joke!"
"Janessa, come on," he mocked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly voice. "Everyone in the family knows about you two; Trevor treats you like you’re some fragile glass doll. What has it been, two years? And you guys haven't even crossed third base, am I wrong?"
My jaw dropped, and the heat rushed into my cheeks so fast I felt dizzy. "That is absolutely none of your business!"
"So I'm right," he said smoothly, a look of amusement flashing in his eyes. "You’re playing house with a guy who treats you like a nun, thinking it’s sweet, but it’s pathetic. He’s got you locked up in this cage of purity, and you’re smiling through the bars because you think it means he loves you."
His words hit me hard. It was rude and uncalled for, but it made me feel completely exposed. For years, I told myself that Trevor waiting and keeping things slow was romantic and a sign of his goodness. But standing here, that cage suddenly felt very real and very small.
"You don't know anything about us," I whispered, my voice shaking with anger and embarrassment.
"I know enough," Brayden said, instantly becoming totally indifferent. He straightened up, dismissing me with a wave of his hand. "Your room is down the hall to the left, and the bathroom is connected. Lock the door, stay inside, and let me get some sleep."
He didn't wait for me to reply. He just turned and walked down the opposite corridor, leaving me alone in the middle of his perfect, cold apartment.
I dragged my suitcase into the guest room, shutting the door firmly behind me. The room was sleek, with a huge bed and gray sheets. I dropped onto the floor next to my bags, my hands trembling as I grabbed a pair of sweatpants. I felt so lost.
Right as I pulled out a t-shirt, my phone started buzzing loudly in my pocket.
I pulled it out, and Trevor's caller ID flashed across the screen.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, taking a deep breath to stabilize my voice before pressing answer. "Hey," I managed.
"Janessa! Oh my god, babe, I'm so sorry," Trevor's voice flooded through the speaker, sounding frantic. "I fell asleep and my phone was on silent, and I just saw your texts about Caleb. Is everything okay? Did you land safely? Where are you right now?"
I looked around the dark, expensive guest room of the one person Trevor absolutely despised.
The rivalry between Trevor and Brayden wasn't just normal brotherly drama; it was deep and toxic. Trevor lost his mind whenever Brayden was involved. If I told Trevor I was sitting in Brayden's condo, he would completely freak out. I didn't have the energy to handle a huge family fight at two in the morning.
"Yeah," I lied, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. For the first time in our relationship, I was actively deceiving him. "Yeah, I'm safe. I landed fine."
"Thank god," Trevor exhaled a sigh of relief. "Where are you? Did you find a hotel or something? I can transfer you some money for the room; I’ll figure it out—"
"No, don't worry about it," I quickly interrupted, staring down at my sneakers. "A girl from the admissions office happened to be near the campus and helped me out. I'm staying at her place for the night, so it's totally fine, Trevor, really."
"Wow, seriously? That’s an actual miracle," he breathed, completely buying the story. "I was losing my mind, Janessa. I'm going to kill Caleb next time I see him; he purposely ruins everything. I'm just glad you're safe. I love you, okay?"
"I love you too," I murmured.
We hung up a few seconds later, and the silence settled over me like a suffocating blanket. I stared at the dark screen of my phone, feeling a hollow ache in my chest.
I had survived my first night in Berkeley. But as I crawled into the bed that belonged to my boyfriend’s bitter twin, I knew my fairytale was already starting to fracture.
Brayden's POVI skated off the ice, the sharp scrape of my blades cutting through the slush near the bench as the final whistle blew.Sweat was dripping steadily down my neck, soaking right into the collar of my heavy practice jersey. My lungs were burning, my thigh muscles were screaming from the brutal conditioning drills Coach had forced us through, but my mind wasn't even on the rink. The second the session ended, my thoughts had immediately drifted right back to the loft. I wanted to get back to check on Janessa. After the total nuclear disaster we had caused at my parents' mansion last night, I knew she had to be reeling. She was a good girl, raised on safe promises, and watching the entire Hayes empire catch fire wasn't exactly something she was built to handle without spiraling.I stepped onto the heavy rubber matting, intending to march straight into the corridor and head for the showers, when a massive body bumped hard against my shoulder.I flinched slightly, my jaw clenchi
Janessa's POVThe deep stacks of the university library were the only place on campus where I felt like the entire world wasn't watching me bleed. It was late the next afternoon, and the air back here smelled like dust, old binding glue, and heavy silence. I was tucked away in a cramped corner cubicle, surrounded by towering metal shelves of ancient history textbooks that nobody had touched since the nineties. I was supposed to be studying for Professor Keller’s workshop, focusing on the raw, unfiltered writing assignment he had challenged me to finish by Monday morning. But every time I stared at the blank page of my notebook, my vision blurred. On the desk, my phone was buzzing in a relentless, angry pattern against the wood. I had finally plugged it back in, and the consequences were immediate. The screen lit up with another block of text from an unknown number, but I didn't need a caller ID to know exactly who it was. The cold vocabulary belonged to Mrs. Hayes.*Miss Moreno, your
Janessa’s POVThe grand dining room felt like a courtroom, and I was the one on the witness stand.Mrs. Hayes leaned back slightly in her chair, her piercing gray eyes locking onto me with an intensity that made me feel naked. She didn't look angry; she looked completely disgusted, staring at me across the dark mahogany table like I was nothing more than a piece of dirt someone had tracked onto her expensive Persian rug."I am speaking to you, Miss Moreno," her voice cut through the quiet room, sharp and completely freezing. "I want an answer. Is this truly how you repay this family’s kindness? Trevor has spent the last two years treating you with nothing but respect, and the very second you step foot in Berkeley, you cause a sordid public spectacle with his brother."My throat went dry. I tried to swallow, but it felt like my throat was coated in sand. "Mrs. Hayes, it’s not—""Do not interrupt me," she snapped coldly, raising a perfectly manicured hand to silence me before I could ev
Brayden's POVI stood at the arched entrance of the dining room, my fingers tightly locked through Janessa’s, and watched the exact second the pristine, elegant mask my mother wore turned completely to stone. The silence stretching across the mahogany table was heavy, thick, and toxic. Then, a shattering clatter broke it. Across the table, Trevor’s hand twitched, and his water glass slipped right from his grip, tumbling over and spilling ice water all over the white linen tablecloth. He didn't even look down at the mess. His brown eyes were wide, bloodshot, and burning with fury as he locked onto our joined hands. My mother didn't blink. She didn't lose her composure. She just cleared her throat, a cold, clipping sound that instantly cut through the room."Mary," she called out smoothly, her voice calm as she gestured to a maid standing near the kitchen doors. "Clear the spill. Fresh linen, please."She turned her calculating gaze toward me, completely ignoring Janessa’s existence at
Janessa's POVI was practically vibrating out of my skin from anxiety, and the smooth, leather interior of the SUV was doing absolutely nothing to calm me down.I stared blankly at my own reflection in the dark, tinted passenger window as the city skyline melted into the rolling, expensive hills of the suburbs. The girl looking back at me looked like a total stranger. I was wearing a sleek, tailored dress that Brayden had basically forced me to pick out from a high-end boutique down the street from his condo earlier that afternoon. It was beautiful, expensive, and completely unlike anything I usually wore. Standing in his mirror, I had felt like an imposter playing a part in a movie I never auditioned for, and now, sitting in the quiet car, that feeling was suffocating me."You're going to burn a hole through that glass if you keep staring at it like that," Brayden's deep, gravelly voice rumbled through the quiet interior of the car.He was driving with one hand carelessly resting on
Brayden's POVI woke up early to the aggressive buzzing of my phone vibrating against the floor by my bed.I groaned, rolling over and running a heavy hand across my face to try and clear the sleep from my eyes. The morning sun was barely cutting through the blinds, casting long, pale lines across the ceiling.I reached down and grabbed the device, fully intending to smash the silent button and go back to sleep. I was sick of the constant influx of calls. But when I squinted at the screen, it wasn't my mother's name flashing back at me. It was her personal assistant.I slid the bar across the screen and brought the phone to my ear, my voice coming out in a flat, gravelly rasp. "What?""Brayden," her crisp, overly professional voice echoed through the speaker. She didn't even pause to check if she had woken me up. "Your mother has instructe
Janessa's POVThe parking lot was dead silent for a split second, the kind of silence that happens right before a bomb goes off.Caleb looked like a total jerk, standing there with that stupid, arrogant smirk on his face while his cigarette burned down to the filter. He flicked the ash right onto t
Janessa's POVMy first actual day at Berkeley did not start the way I had envisioned it over the last six months.Instead of waking up in a cute dorm room and casually walking to class with a coffee, I woke up in the modern, freezing guest room of a hockey captain who looked like he could snap me i
Brayden's POVI stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of my living room, staring out at the hazy skyline of Berkeley. The city was finally quiet at three in the morning, but my head was buzzing with pure irritation.I took a slow sip of water, listening to the silence coming from the guest bedroom.
Brayden's POVI sat back against the cheap vinyl of the booth, watching Janessa stare at her buzzing phone like it was a live grenade. The screen kept lighting up, casting a pale glow over her face as Trevor's name flashed across it for the umpteenth time. She looked completely frozen, her chest he
