Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
I had the highest score on the SAT and specialized in quantum technology. I pursued the field I enjoyed and completed a combined undergraduate and graduate program all the way through to my PhD. I started conducting research as a student and possessed numerous invention patents.

After graduating, I accepted Dr. Lane's invitation to join his lab, where I devoted myself to research with the goal of creating a groundbreaking invention that would advance technology. I chose the most difficult research track because of this, didn't take a single day off for three years, and spent all my time in the lab.

I had received job offers from labs abroad during that period, but I turned them all down solely because I wanted to stay and serve my country. I never imagined that the fruits of my relentless effort would be branded as plagiarism.

I was walking home under the starry, moonlit sky. The more I reflected on the situation, the more suspicious it seemed. Amid my chaotic thoughts, a sudden spark of inspiration flashed through my mind.

I figured that since my current project was no longer viable, I could simply switch my focus to the research of the accessory module. After all, quantum technology was a broad field, and technological innovation wasn't limited to one area.

When I arrived home, I went straight to work. I turned on my computer to begin calculations and simulations immediately. After hours of intense thinking, the problems that had once seemed insurmountable became easier to understand, and a new model emerged in my mind.

I would no longer be accused of plagiarism with this approach, and more importantly, this new invention could offer quantum technology a fresh perspective. I grew more excited as I worked through the numbers, quickly organizing and perfecting the new model.

I kept going until I heard Mom's anxious voice from behind me. "I know you want to do something for the country, but staying up all night is not good for your health, Callum. I won't ask for much. I just want you to be safe and healthy."

I looked at my phone with a hint of confusion, only to realize that it was already 5:30 am.

Mom draped a blanket over my shoulders and said reassuringly, "You still have a month to file for the patent, so there's no need to rush right now, Callum."

I was overwhelmed with guilt when I looked into Mom's aged, clouded eyes. I had devoted all my time to my career and had rarely been there for my parents. In the end, the plagiarism accusation had even caused them to die tragically in my past life.

I let out a long sigh at that thought. I quickly reassured Mom and then kept working through the night to finish designing Invention 2.0.

I finally breathed a sigh of relief as I looked at the completed blueprints. At last, I had completed my own invention. I would never be accused of plagiarism again, nor would I let my parents be put in harm's way.

I remembered that in my past life, Kennedy had not only reported me for plagiarism but had also slandered me online, claiming that I was trying to seize the Quinlan family's assets through Maisie. He spoke with absolute conviction before the camera, causing his countless mindless fans to attack me on his behalf online.

"How can this leech be so shameless? He plagiarized the younger brother's work and now intends to harm the older sister!"

"The Quinlans are so unfortunate to cross paths with someone like you! Do everyone a favor and die already!"

"We're the only ones who can protect Kennedy! Who's going to dig up this bastard's phone number and dox the shit out of him?"

In my past life, I couldn't understand why Kennedy would falsely accuse me. I had scrambled to find a lawyer to clear my name, which only worsened the cyberbullying.

But no matter how out of the loop Mom and Dad were, they eventually learned about what happened. They had agreed to be interviewed by a reporter to defend me, but the moment they stepped out the door, a few extremist fans pushed them off a high-rise building.

I clenched both fists tightly as I thought about this, my fingernails digging deep into my palms. I knew that if I didn't find out the root cause of everything that had happened, it would be hard to guarantee that the events of my past life would not repeat themselves in this life.

I was thinking about how to begin my investigation when the junior researcher next to me exclaimed, "Did you guys see the video Kennedy posted? Someone actually plagiarized his invention! He loves posting videos to show off, so it's no surprise that someone plagiarized his work.

"I just can't believe someone actually had the nerve to do it! I mean, plagiarism is so disgraceful! Who on earth could be this shameless to do it?"

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine as soon as I heard what they said. I immediately took out my phone and tapped into Kennedy's social media profile.

Granduncle Daniel continued, "It's a highly dangerous curse-seed that operates as a matched pair—a source-seed and a curse-seed. It'll continuously feed on the victim's mind and vital energy once the curse-seed takes root. It will only take five years for you to be sucked dry and die!"Hearing his explanation, I felt a cold dread wash over me. Maisie's interview excuse from three years ago, along with the pastries she brought, had all been a calculated move to set me up. Maisie and Kennedy had both set their sights on me because of my wealthy family background and brilliant mind, determined to strip me of everything I possessed. They were truly monsters!Grandpa, Mom, and Dad erupted in anger after hearing that. "How dare that piece of trash do this to Callum! Damn them to hell! I'm absolutely going to make them pay for this!"Upon seeing my eyes bloodshot with rage, Granduncle Daniel tried to comfort me, saying, "You have nothing to be afraid of, Callum! I have a way to deal with

I woke up the following day and found out that the videos from yesterday had caused a massive uproar. Kennedy's lab announced that they had called the authorities and launched a formal investigation into him.Kennedy's old personal scandals and misdeeds were quickly dug up, and before long, numerous fellow researchers came forward to condemn him online."I'm so fed up with him! I mean, when the entire lab was counting on his project, he suddenly refused to continue, saying he had no idea how to carry out the next steps of the experiment.""He had multiple PhD students working under him, and it turns out, he didn't even know how to run basic calculations. He got several numbers wrong and ended up blowing through a massive chunk of our funding!""If that fraud is considered a genius, then anyone can be one! I'm seriously questioning whether he plagiarized someone else's work in the past!"It wasn't long before the criticism from within the industry was brought to light, with many on

I was in the middle of a chess game with Grandpa when my phone buzzed with a new notification. I opened it and saw that Kennedy had updated his social media again. He had posted a new set of design blueprints shortly after my phone call with Seth, and sure enough, it matched my exact approach. His comment section was filled with compliments, including praise from other researchers."Oh, my God! Kennedy is truly impressive! He actually cracked a difficult problem!""Kennedy is seriously a genius researcher! He's got the looks and the brains! I'm calling dibs on him as my husband!""Kennedy's latest breakthrough is going to drive the whole industry forward! It's history in the making!"I stared coldly at the comments, completely certain that my suspicion was right. There was definitely something wrong with Kennedy. He was able to reproduce my ideas and thought process exactly, as if he could instantly receive every thought I had.It sounded very absurd, but there was no way that th

That evening, Mom and Grandpa put together an amazing dinner. I couldn't help but scarf down four whole plates. Then, I just kicked back in a lounge chair out on the porch to recover. Grandpa casually hummed a folk song from our hometown, and the familiar melody immediately eased much of my distress and anxiety.Mom, Dad, Grandpa, and I sat out on the porch chatting, feeling the cool breeze on our faces and listening to the night crickets.I couldn't help but think that this was exactly how life should be. In the following days, Mom, Dad, and I worked alongside Grandpa on the farm, bringing in the mature crops from several acres of farmland. In our spare time, we followed Grandpa to the river to fish, and in the evenings, we ate our own home-grown vegetables for dinner.Maisie had tried contacting me several times. Her calls were starting to irritate me, so I finally picked up. She sounded worried and kept asking me where I was, but I cut her off coldly, saying, "I'm sorry, Ms.

"Yes, I am," I replied without a moment's hesitation. In that instant, everyone in the private room immediately glared at me with pure disgust, throwing out mocking taunts."That plagiarist got caught in the act! How shameless!"I ignored them and turned to Kennedy with a serious expression to discuss the blueprints. "Your invention is really impressive, which is why I couldn't resist checking it out. Your blueprints, however, only solve the surface-level technical issues. How do you plan to handle the real complications that come up during actual operation?"Kennedy looked visibly flustered for a second, stammering through his response. "I-I'm still looking into that part…"He immediately snapped his laptop shut after saying that.Taking in his panicked reaction, I knew immediately that he had no clue how to handle these complications. I had been extremely busy dealing with the plagiarism accusations over the past few days. So, I hadn't been able to focus on my research. That

Unexpectedly, Kennedy's fans were stunned after hearing this."Hold on! You're telling me that this loser is actually Callum, the guy who plagiarized Kennedy's work?""It's no wonder he got away with plagiarism! He was relying on his identity as Kennedy's soon-to-be brother-in-law! How shameless!""He won't even put Kennedy's name on the property deed! He's so selfish! He doesn't deserve Maisie at all!"Meanwhile, the Quinlans merely watched on indifferently as I was subjected to insults. They didn't even bother stepping in to defend me.When I remained completely unmoved, Kennedy quickly got up and tried to ease the situation. "It's all just a misunderstanding. Callum truly loves Maisie. He even agreed to buy a house for our entire family."I scoffed inwardly. I had never said anything of the sort. My family made its fortune from coal mines, and Maisie's parents always dismissed us as mere nouveau riche.I wasn't foolish enough to use my entire fortune to pave the way for the Q
