Chapter 2

作者: Saffron Fish
Bree froze, a single tear still clinging to the corner of her eye.

I turned to our housekeeper, Harold Smither. "Harold, go up to my study and bring down the folder on my desk."

This was the first thing I did after coming back. I drafted a contract.

A few minutes later, a document over a dozen pages thick landed on the coffee table in front of Bree. The cover read, "Residential Conduct Agreement and Liability Waiver".

"Sign it, and you can move in."

I stood over her with my arms crossed.

Bree picked it up, looking dazed, and flipped to the first page. Her face fell immediately.

The terms were spelled out in black and white.

"First, the host family (the Whitmore family) provides the first-floor guest room for the resident (Bree Webb) to occupy free of charge. The resident's access is restricted to the guest room and designated common areas on the first floor. The second and third floors are strictly off-limits.

"Second, the resident has self-reported a tendency toward severe depression. The host family assumes no responsibility for psychological counseling or medical supervision.

"In the event of any self-harm, suicide attempt, or medical emergency arising from the resident's own condition during the period of residence, the host family bears no legal or financial liability.

"Third, the resident is required to follow the household schedule, is not permitted to bring outside visitors onto the property, and is not permitted to engage in any inappropriate personal contact with members of the host family.

"Any violation gives the host family the right to terminate the arrangement immediately."

"Leah, what is this? You don't trust me?" Bree bit her lip, looking as wounded as if I'd slapped her across the face.

Aunt Lorraine frowned. "Leah, isn't this a bit much? She's practically family. Making her sign something this cold is just hurtful."

"That's exactly the point, Aunt Lorraine. She isn't family. That's why we need it in writing."

I looked at her with a thin smile.

"She's the one who said she's so depressed she can barely function. If something happens to her under our roof and the press picks it up, they'll say the Whitmores drove a scholarship student to suicide. Are you going to take the fall for that?"

That shut her up. She took an awkward sip of her coffee.

I turned back to Bree, my gaze sharp.

"What's the problem? You said you couldn't survive in that dorm and that all you wanted was a safe place to stay. This waiver only covers your own actions and your own safety.

"If you won't sign it, that tells me you've got something to hide. The door's right there. Harold, show her out."

"No! I'll sign!" Bree panicked, terrified the whole thing was about to slip through her fingers.

She grabbed the pen, her fingers trembling, and signed her name on the last page. I looked at the signature and let a cold smile cross my face.

I was going to make sure every mistake from my last life never happened again.

That afternoon, Bree moved into the first-floor guest room with her beat-up suitcase.

In the evening, while she was back at school picking up the rest of her books, I called the VIP line of a private security firm. Within the hour, five technicians in uniforms showed up at the estate with their equipment.

Under my supervision, they installed military-grade microcameras and audio pickups throughout the hallways, living room, dining room, and kitchen, all the way down to the blind spots on the staircase between the first and second floors.

Every device was disguised as an outlet plate, a smoke detector, or an air conditioning vent. They were completely invisible to the naked eye.

"Ms. Whitmore, all surveillance feeds are now synced to a cloud server. The firewall is top-tier. No amount of physical tampering can erase data that's already been uploaded."

Dozens of major accounts with millions of followers were permanently banned and hit with civil damages ranging from hundreds of thousands to over a million dollars each. The online landscape went through a long-overdue cleanup after the case. All those keyboard warriors who'd made a hobby out of screaming "eat the rich" finally learned that spreading lies came with a real price tag.And for Whitmore Industries and Eric, the whole disaster actually turned into a blessing in disguise. The national spotlight had put Eric's character and resilience on full display, and his tech startup got more exposure than money could buy. The investors who had pulled out took a second look at the man who'd kept his composure through all of it, came back with their checkbooks, and doubled the valuation. The day the truth came out, Whitmore Industries' stock surged to a record high.As for Uncle Ray, the evidence against him was airtight. He was sentenced to five years and lost every ounce of influen

I turned on Uncle Ray, my gaze cutting."You dumped your shares overnight. You coordinated with competitors to short Whitmore Industries' stock. And you were planning to use this afternoon's board meeting to force my father out. Did you really think I didn't know?"Uncle Ray's face went white. He jabbed a finger at me. "Leah, that's a baseless accusation! How dare you slander your own family!""You can explain whether it's slander to the financial crimes unit."I tilted my chin toward the lobby entrance. Several officers in plainclothes walked through the doors."Mr. Ray Whitmore, we've received a formal complaint and have preliminary evidence indicating your involvement in embezzlement, commercial bribery, and illegal market manipulation. We need you to come with us for questioning."Uncle Ray's legs gave out. Two officers took him by the arms and walked him out. With the rot inside the family dealt with, it was time to settle the public record once and for all.At 3:00 pm, Wh

Bree let out a cold laugh. "Ten million dollars? That's not going to cut it. I don't just want money."Once this blows up big enough and Eric has no choice but to marry me to shut everyone up, I'll be Mrs. Whitmore. And then the whole family is mine."The recording ended. The conference room was dead silent. The only sound was the low hum of the projector fan.Travis shot out of his chair, knocking it over. Sweat poured down his face as he bolted for the door."Stop him!" the senior officer barked. Two officers outside pushed through the door immediately. One of them had Travis pinned to the floor in seconds, and the handcuffs clicked shut behind his back.Bree slid out of her chair like she'd lost every bone in her body and crumpled to the ground. She stared at the screen, unblinking, like she was watching her own life come to an end.I stood over her and repeated her own words back to her in the exact same tone she'd used, "I don't want money. I just want him to answer for wha

The senior officer taking the statement frowned and motioned for Travis to sit down. "Keep it down. This is a police station."Bree, describe the specific time, location, and how Eric Whitmore assaulted you."Bree looked up. Behind her bloodshot, swollen eyes, there was a flicker of calculation. She took a deep breath and launched into the script she'd clearly rehearsed."It was three nights ago, around 9:00 pm. There was nobody else in the house. I was reading in the living room when he came rushing downstairs, reeking of alcohol."He pinned me down on the couch and started tearing at my clothes. I screamed for help, but the house was so well insulated that nobody could hear me."I don't want money!"Her voice spiked, cracking with sobs. "I just want him to answer for what he did! I want him prosecuted! I want his life ruined!"It was very moving. If I hadn't lived through my last life, I might've actually been touched by that performance, the noble victim who couldn't be bough

The three top-tier investment firms that had already agreed to terms called overnight to pull out. It was playing out exactly the way it did in my last life. That evening, someone nearly hammered the front door off its hinges. My uncle, Ray Whitmore, stormed in with a handful of company executives in tow, seething. In my last life, he was the one who pressured my parents relentlessly at this exact stage until they agreed to the insane decision of marrying Eric off to Bree."Where's Eric? Get that little bastard out here!" He was shouting the second he walked through the door, his face twisted in outrage."Look at what he's done! One day, and the company's lost billions of dollars in market value! The board is ready to eat me alive!"Eric walked out of his study, jaw tight and fists clenched. But he wasn't panicking. He just looked at me."Uncle Ray, Eric didn't do anything." My voice was ice."If he didn't do anything, why would she put her own reputation on the line to make it

I sat on the couch, picked up my cup of coffee, and blew on the steam before lifting my eyes to look at her."At least a thief has some self-respect. When they can't steal what they came for, they leave. What's your excuse?""You…" Bree was shaking with rage. "You rich people are all the same. You sit up there on your throne and look down on the rest of us. I'm telling you, Leah. Sooner or later, your family's money will—"She caught herself mid-sentence and clamped her mouth shut."Sooner or later, it'll all be yours, right?" I finished the sentence for her and smiled. "Sure. I'll be waiting. In the meantime, you might want to get your head checked."The string of failures made it clear to Bree that breaking in from the inside wasn't going to work. With me standing guard, she couldn't get within arm's reach of Eric. So, she pulled out the same weapon that destroyed the Whitmores in my last life, which was public opinion.Back then, the family's fear of bad press was what made u
