Astrid’s POV

He was tall! Taller than Anthony (which is saying something) broader through the shoulders moving with like a predator that said he'd killed before and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again and again.

He has the most black hair I have ever seen. His skin was tan and brown eyes that locked onto me with an intensity that made my knees weak.

My wolf stirred with interest, drawn to his scent and another wild thing that called to the predator in me. I noticed his gaze drop to my neck to Anthony’s mark. Something flickered in his expression and I swear it was disgust before his face went carefully blank.

He was unfairly handsome but there was something about the way he held himself, a kind of arrogance in the set of his shoulders, that reminded me too much of Anthony’s charm. Pretty packaging wrapped around calculated intent.

I didn’t trust beautiful men with power anymore.

Vincent stepped forward, placing himself slightly between us not fully blocking but enough to make a statement.

“Your Majesty,” he said evenly. “This is… unexpected.”

Alpha King?! My blood turned to ice immediately.

This was Davian Thornevale?

The Alpha King Anthony was hosting in three weeks. The most powerful Alpha in North America and one man who could destroy or elevate any pack with a single word.

Davian didn’t look at Vincent.

He didn’t even acknowledge him at first.

His attention stayed exactly where it had been from the moment he stepped into the clearing.

On me.

“I go where I’m needed,” he said at last, his voice. Not loud but it carried.

“And right now, I’m needed at the Riftclaw Pack.”

“Here…?” I echoed before I could stop myself.

His gaze sharpened slightly.

There it was.

Interest.

“Riftclaw territory,” he said. “Or close enough to matter.”

My pulse ticked up.

Careful.

“I didn’t realize this would fall under the King’s attention,” Oh my God, I don’t know how I found the courage to ask, but the words were already out.

“I’m investigating reports of illegal witch magic usage. Blood magic. Bonding manipulation. The kind of thing that carries a death sentence.”

My stomach tightened.

Did he mean the fake mark?

Or was there something else happening in Riftclaw that I didn’t know about?

Either way… this wasn’t good.

“I don’t— I don’t know what you mean.” The denial caught in my throat before it could fully form.

Davian’s lip curled.

“Don’t insult us both.” He took a step closer and my wolf practically purred. “I can smell the rot from here, little Luna. That mark on your neck isn’t just fake, it’s killing you.”

What?

My hand flew to my throat.

“Witch magic degrades.”

He took another step. He was close enough now that I could feel the heat radiating off hin and my body betrayed me by swaying forward. I am supposed to swear off men after what just happened to me.

“Especially illusion spells tied to living flesh. It’s eating you from the inside out. Give it another month, maybe two and it’ll start on your organs.”

NO! Is that possible?

I’d survived bleeding out in the snow hearing my own son spill how he hated me and then I’d been given a second chance. I wasn’t going to die slowly from Anthony’s poison mark.

“How...how do you know this?” My voice cracked.

“Because I’ve seen it before.” Davian’s expression was carved from stone.

“I’ll be conducting my inspection in three weeks as planned. The Winter Solstice celebration will provide excellent cover.”

Three weeks. My death day.

“And if you find evidence of illegal magic?” I asked, hating how my voice shook.

“Then Alpha Anthony Riftclaw will stand trial before the Council of Alphas.” Davian’s smile was cold. “And likely lose his head.”

Good. Let him lose everything. I thought about Anthony’s smile this morning. About Mira’s hand on his hand and the hickey around her neck and Calix asking innocent questions while his real parents plotted my death. I thought about the mark burning against my neck counting down my days. But something in Davian’s expression made me pause.

““You sound… very certain,” I said slowly, more careful now, watching him instead of meeting his gaze head-on, “You’re not investigating. You’re just gathering evidence for an execution.”

“Smart.” Davian’s approval felt like a drug I didn’t want to crave. “Your father was smart too. Shame what happened to him.”

The clearing went silent that even Vincent seemed to have hold his breath. What does the King know about my father?. My wolf snarled sensing something beneath those words.

“What do you mean?”

“Not my story.”

I wanted to rip his throat with my new powers but know it’d be futile against this beast of a wolf. I just recently got the Alpha powers while he was born with it. He turned to leave.

“Wait—” The word left my lips before I could stop it. He paused but didn’t turn around.

“The mark” I said touching my neck. “You said it’s killing me. How do I stop it?”

He gravely said. “Get it removed before it goes deeper. If the magic reaches your heart… Only a true mate’s mark can override it. The bond has to be real and it has to be strong enough to burn out the fake magic.”

My stomach dropped.

“But you just said—”

“I know what I said.” His shoulders were rigid. “You should find a solution Luna.”

Then he was gone, disappearing into the forest like he was never there. Vincent’s hand settled carefully on my shoulder.

“Astrid,” he said quietly, waiting until I looked at him. “I’ll contact you in a few days. About claiming Silvermist… and what comes next.”

His gaze softened slightly, but the weight of it didn’t lessen.

“I hope you’ll consider it.”

“I will,” I said, though the future ahead of me felt uncertain, shifting beneath my feet like unstable ground.

Everything had changed in the span of a single morning.

A name. A past. A choice I wasn’t ready for.

And a death sentence ticking quietly beneath my skin.

But this time…

This time, I wouldn’t go quietly.

I would survive.

No matter what it took.

Astrid’s POV“I was seventeen. He was twenty-one and I thought I was the best fighter in my region.” Ian grinned at the memory. “He put me on the ground in about four seconds flat then helped me up and asked me if I wanted to actually learn. Spent the next six months training me personally.”“Why are you telling me this?”“Because you remind me of that kid.” He looked at me properly, no teasing in his expression now. “Someone with real ability who’s been operating below their potential because circumstances didn’t allow anything else. Watching you these past few days—” he shook his head. “You were never weak Astrid. You were suppressed. There’s a massive difference.”“Suppressed..” I repeated quietly.“Anthony didn’t keep you controlled because you were weak. He kept you controlled because he could feel how strong you were and it terrified him.” Ian stood, moving back toward the weapon rack to replace the practice blades. “Strong people recognize strength in others. They just respond

Astrid’s POVFour days passed in a blur of sweat and sore muscles and something that felt dangerously close to joy. Real joy! The uncomplicated kind that came from pushing your body past where it thought it could go and discovering there was more on the other side.I woke up on day one with determination sitting in my chest like a stone and went straight to the gym before the palace was fully awake. The corridors were quiet, just the distant sounds of early guard rotation and the soft footsteps of kitchen staff starting breakfast preparations. I wore black training leggings and a fitted long-sleeve top that had become my favorite because it moved with me instead of against me, my dark hair pulled back in a high ponytail that swung when I moved. Davian was already there like the gym freak I have noticed he is. He was standing at the center of the mat in dark training pants and a gray top that showed the kind of build that came from decades of actual combat rather than just aesthetic

Astrid’s POVMy eyes locked on a piece of paper as soon as I entered my room. The note was on my pillow when I got back to my quarters after dinner. There no envelope or signature. It’s just a folded piece of paper sitting in the middle of my bed like someone has walked right into my private space and left it there on purpose. Which meant they probably did.I stood there staring at it for a second before picking it up. The handwriting was neat. Definitely from someone who didn’t want to be recognized but has the confidence to take their time.-“We know what you did at Riftclaw. The documents you signed. The alliances you helped build. The pack decisions you were part of. We have everything. Pull your claim before the hearing or we release it all to the Council. You won’t just lose Silvermist. You’ll be charged as Anthony’s accomplice. You have 48 hours.”I read it twice then I sat on the bed and read it a third time because my brain needed a moment to catch up with what my eyes were s

Astrid’s POVI finally found my footing again by noon. Or at least I found something that looked like footing from a distance. Inside I was still quietly thunking about almost kissing Davian in the gym, replaying the moment on a loop and alternating between gratitude that Mara had interrupted and genuine anger about the same thing.Mostly resentment if I was honest. Duh. I dressed for lunch in one of the simpler outfits from my growing wardrobe and told myself to focus on what mattered. Not the way Davian’s hand had felt against my face or what he’d said about inevitable. Definitely not that. The main corridor leading to the dining hall was busy at midday, staff and warriors moving. I’ve learned the palace way enough that faces were becoming familiar, some of them offering small nods of acknowledgment as I passed.I was almost at the dining hall when I heard Cora’s voice from a side corridor.“—been impossible to get ten minutes with you this week.” Her tone was light but carried a

Astrid’s POVHis hand moved from my stomach to my waist. It was a shift so small and so significant at the same time. But I felt it from the tip of my head down to my toes. “This is –” he started.“Complicated.” I finished trying hard not to make my words breathy.“I was going to say inevitable.” His voice was rough. “But complicated works too.”My hand came up and rested against his chest, feeling his heart beating faster than his controlled exterior suggested. The realness of that, the evidence that this affected him as much as it affected me, killed the last of my resistance.“Davian,” I called quietly but it carried everything I hadn’t been able to say yet.He lifted his other hand and touched my face, his thumb tracing my cheekbone the way he’s done before but different now. Its lke he was giving himself permission he’s been withholding.“I’ve been trying to give you time to figure it out on your own terms. Not to push.” He rasped staring at me like I was from another realm. “I

Astrid’s POV6AM came with pale light filtering through the curtains and my body was already awake before my alarm. I feel restless with energy that has nowhere to go.I’d been sleeping better since Silvermist. Running through those ancient forests on four white paws and feeling the land recognize something in me it has been waiting for. The nightmares haven’t disappeared entirely but they’ve lost their teeth. I dressed in training clothes and padded through the connecting door to Davian’s quarters without knocking, which had somehow become normal over the past week. The gym was empty when I arrived but warm which meant he’s been here already and left. Or he was coming.I started without him. Stretching first, taking time with it instead of rushing to the real work. My body has become something I was genuinely grateful for lately. Way stronger every day, more capable, responding to demands I put on it with ease.Serra’s latest check showed my Alpha blood was fully active now. My wol

Astrid’s POV“The hearing is in nine days. After that, if the Council rules in my favor, I’ll need help rebuilding. Astrid’s POVThe engines roared and suddenly we were accelerating, the world blurring past the windows. Then that stomach dropping sensation as the nose lifted and we were airborne.
