Mag-log inTwo days later.....
The dining hall was warm with the glow of candlelight, and quiet. The only sounds heard were the shuffling feet of servants moving in and out of the hall, refilling goblets and replacing dishes. Mona sat opposite Alpha Jerry, smiling sweetly. "I am so happy to see you looking much better my love." She told him. He nodded slightly, trying not to wince at the word, my love. It always sounded wrong when she said it. When Sharon had called him that it sounded like music. His jaw tightened: Stop thinking about her. "My love?" He blinked and looked up. Mona had been talking but he hadn't heard a word. " I said," she repeated, "that I want silk to be used for the clothes we will wear for the ceremony." "Of course. Speak to the royal tailor." "And my crown? I hope you had them make it exactly like I asked?" He nodded. "Is it ready yet?" She asked excited. He made a vague sound. "Yes or no?" She asked sharply. "The ceremony is in a few weeks, everything should be ready by now." He put his spoon down and looked at her. He hadn't yet told her the ceremony was being proponed and she would be moved to another pack. He was scared of her reaction, but he had to. It would be wrong to get her hopes up. "My love," she said with forced gentleness, "is something wrong? Please tell me. Remember I am your mate now." He forced a smile. "Let us talk after dinner." She smiled to mask her anger and anxiety: What did the fool want to say now? They finished the meal in silence, broken only by the soft babbling of Kyle, who was happily smearing mashed cheese across his high chair as his nanny fed him. When the meal ended Mona rose and went to her son, lifting him from the chair. "Let me put our son to bed and join you in your chambers my love." She said softly. She left the hall, followed by the nanny and walked to Kyle's bedroom. She tucked Kyle into his crib, smoothing his soft hair. When he fell asleep she turned to the nanny. "Listen carefully. Lock the window and door. Then make sure you check on him every ten minutes." She ordered. "Yes ma'am." Satisfied, she went to join the Alpha in his chamber. She found him standing before the fireplace, his back to her, gazing at a framed picture of Sharon. Her blood boiled watching him, but she hid her feelings. "My love, what do you want to talk about?" She asked sweetly. He turned. "About the confirmation ceremony" "What about it? Are things not according to your taste? Tell me who is slacking and I will punish them!" "No, take it easy. You are too quick to talk about punishment." He said annoyed. "Sharon was more compassionate, that's why people loved her." Mona clenched her fist in fury. "Yet your perfect Sharon killed your mother! How dare you compare me to her! Aren't you ashamed to even say her name?" "I'm sorry," he said quickly, raising his hands in a small appeasing gesture. "Please don't be mad." She force her anger down: Just wait till I am officially Luna. "What did you want to say about the ceremony?" She mumbled. "I want to prosp-" A frightened scream tore through the night, making them jump. "What is that?" Mona asked frightened. Jerry was already moving. "Stay here!" She didn't listen. Together they ran into the hall. Judy and Beta Frank appeared from the opposite corridor. "What is going on?" Judy asked. "I don't know but it is coming from our son's room " Mona said running upstairs. "Not so fast! It might be an attack." Her father called as they all followed her. The nanny stood in front of Kyle's room, holding him tightly and whimpering. "What happened here?" Mona demanded, snatching her son from the woman's arms. The nanny pointed to the room. "I came into the room to check on the baby like you said, and caught that man standing over him with a knife!" Jerry and Frank shouldered past them into the nursery where the guards wrestled a man in red clothing to the floor. His face was smeared with dirt and sweat and on his forehead, was a deep red burn mark. The mark of a rogue assassin wolf. "You monster! Trying to kill a baby." Mona spat at him, clutching her son. Jerry hauled the man up by the collar and smashed a fist into his face. "You son of a bitch! Who sent you?" Frank held him back, while the assassin snarled but remained silent. "Talk." Frank demanded. Still silence. "Take him to the dungeon, I will interrogate him myself." Jerry ordered. The man was dragged away. "Wait! I will talk, in exchange for mercy." He said. "Out with it!" Frank fumed. "I was paid 50 gold pieces to kill the boy. The air in the room turned heavy. "Who paid you?" Jerry demanded. The assassin's eyes slid past Mona. For a heartbeat he appeared to be looking at the nanny, until everyone realized he was looking at the person behind her. "Gamma Judy." He said coldly. There was a deafening silence. It was exactly as Ruto had predicted. His father listened to him with a bored and annoyed expression then said sharply,“So? That arrogant oaf wants his son to marry the daughter of another oaf, why should it bother you? Don’t you have better things to occupy yourself with?” “Father weren’t you listening to me? Fira and I love each –““Love is for idiots and common fools.” His father snapped. “You are a noble. Never mind our pack isn’t well to do, I know it will change one day. Till then, concern yourself with gaining more glory and not the affairs of our enemies. Dennis can trade his whole pack from a bride if he likes. Better for us if he using his grain to get wives for his sons. He will soon run out of resources and be as poor as a Zombie field mouse.” He laughed.“Father please. Fira can’t marry Som. Let’s offer more grain to Alpha Gorey. He would reject Dennis’ offer and Fira and I can get married.” Nic suggested. His father gaped at him.“Are you out of your senses? How can y
"Ruto, I wasn't expecting you." Nic told his brother."I know. I came to wish you luck, but met your Retainer who told me you went to find some limestone to shine your sword. Is that true?"Nic almost rolled his eyes. Had his Retainer forgotten the lie?"Yes. It is true. My sword needed a little more sharpness.""Where is the limestone?" Ruto asked staring at his empty hands."I didn't find any.""Really? Oh wait," he slapped his forehead. "Your Retainer actually said you went to relieve yourself, so which is it?"Nic stared at him, realizing he had been tricked. Ruto laughed."You know, I don't think you went to do either, I think you went to see Alpha Goreys' pretty daughter. Am I right?""Keep your voice down. If you already know why ask?" Nic said, sitting on the bed beside him.""I want to see your blush when you talk about her." He laughed again.Nic playfully punched his arm."She came to wish me luck," Nic explained, "and she gave me this." He brought out the fan, from where h
Nic sat in his small tent polishing his sword, his heart pounding with excitement. The roar of the crowd was so loud it seemed to shake the ground. The Annual Lunar Games were always a time of excitement. All twenty packs of Wolf Kingdom gathered together while their young nobles competed in archery, swordsmanship, racing, and other contests for the coveted, Lunar Medal. Nic was the reigning champion and was determine to keep his title. Black Fang was the poorest of the twenty packs, bringing them glory in the Games was the least he could do. His retainer entered the tent. "My lord, you have a visitor." "Later. I'm busy." The retainer lowered his voice. "It's Lady Fira. She's waiting at the edge of the tournament grounds. She says it's urgent." Nic stood up immediately. “Stay here. If anyone asks for me, say I went to relieve myself.” He instructed the retainer. He hurried to the woods surrounding the training ground, where he knew Fira would be. On the way he ra
"So my Luna, what did you want to talk about?" Nic asked, as they walked away from the palace and into the garden. "Like I said, our common enemy. Som." "I didn't know you loathed that despicable son of a vampire as much as I did." "Of course I do. Didn't you see how he humiliated me the day the Alpha came back from the Moon Pool? Before then he encouraged a servant to disrespect me. And he is insufferable! Strutting around as if he were the Kingdom Beta, when he is nothing more than the Alpha of a pack not even half as worthy as yours. He needs to be taught a lesson in humility. Unfortunately Jerry is too weak to do what needs to be done. Wolf Kingdom needs a strong ruler." "And who do you suggest is strong enough?" Nic asked cautiously. "My son of course. Kyle will be the strongest Alpha to ever rule Wolf Kingdom. Have you seen him at the training? He is already showing promise." Mona said proudly. Last I heard, you nearly tore the palace apart when the Alpha suggested the boy
“Then let’s begin. The first step is killing Jerry –“ “Shhhh…I know. But wait.” “Again? You said once Jerry came back from the Moon Pool –“ “We'd kill him. I know. But the ceremony didn’t go as planned. Give it some time. Let’s see what happens. If Lupus Tenebris doesn’t show his face again then the threat is really over, and we can continue with our plan.” “How long do we have to wait?” Mona asked gnashing her teeth. “Till we are sure the evil wolf is no more. Meanwhile leave the gathering of allies to me. Your concern should be getting the people to like you. It will help make the throne more comfortable when you eventually sit on it.” There was a knock and a servant brought in the pie. Mona mumbled an excuse and stalked out. She managed to contain her anger till she entered her solar. The nanny was there, playing with Kyle. One look at the Luna's face and she fled with the child. She had worked with Mona enough to know when she got like this no one, not even her
Don’t you see eating here is better father? There is peace and quiet. No Alphas behaving like children. Imagine the disgraceful way Nic and Som were behaving.” Frank shrugged. “Their animosity goes back decades. I doubt even the Goddess can bring them together.” “Is it so bad that Nic would oppose a good idea just because Som suggested it?” She asked, pretending not to know the answer. “My dear, Nic would watch his pack burn if it meant accepting water from Som. That’s how bad it is.” Her eyes widened. “Hmmm…. Everyone knows Som is the Alphas strongest supporter. And Jerry admires him too. Don’t you think Nic would support anyone who tried to destroy that friendship? Say if someone tried to take the throne away from the Alpha?” She asked carefully. The piece of meat Frank had been about to swallow suddenly got stuck in his throat. So this was why Mona had personally brought him his lunch, to pitch her ill thought out ideas. “Think about it father.” She said eagerly. “Ni
Shouldn’t we be attacking again? At least attack the palace and kill Jerry.” Judy asked Lupus Tenebris as she restlessly paced the cold stone floors of her throne room. Her red eyes burning with impatience. It was a week since their last attack and she was hold up in White Hollow, impatient to do mo
Toby wrapped his arms around Anna in relief. "Thank the Goddess! I have been so worried about you two." He took his daughter in his arms. "What happened? How did you and Phina end up as guests of the Alpha?" "Long story." She grinned and told him. "What were you thinking? You could have been k
Everyone looked at baby Seraphina with a mix of fear and wonder. Was it just her flower crown that had driven the beast away, or something more? Jerry turned to his men. “Find them room in the palace. We will talk in the morning.” He told Anna. “No I want to go home. The beast is gone, and my
"By a dragon?” Alexander frowned. “No Lord. I have never seen this type of creature before. We must get you and the Lady to safety.” “Get the lady to the safe room. I will go and deal with this creature.” “Be careful my love.” Elena whispered as he left. He joined his men in the courtyard
