Elara's POV

I woke before Kael did, still curled together on the stone floor where exhaustion had finally pulled us both under sometime near dawn, and for a long moment I simply lay there, watching the pale morning light creep across his face, softer in sleep than I'd ever seen him, none of the careful, guarded weight he carried every waking hour.

He stirred eventually, eyes opening slowly, and when he found me watching him, something warm and unguarded spread across his face, the kind of smile I hadn't seen from him before, easy and real in a way that made my chest ache with how much I wanted to keep seeing it.

"You're still here," he said, voice rough with sleep.

"Where else would I be?"

"I don't know." He reached up, brushing a strand of hair back from my face, his fingers lingering against my cheek. "I think some part of me keeps expecting to wake up and find out last night was a dream. That I imagined the whole thing, the mark, you, all of it."

"It wasn't a dream." I turned my face into his palm, pressing a soft kiss against it, feeling him go still at the small gesture. "You made it through the full moon, Kael. Completely. Nyra's going to want to document every detail, probably before either of us has had a chance to eat breakfast."

He laughed, low and warm, and the sound of it settled something deep in my chest, because I'd heard him laugh before, small and controlled, but never quite like this, unguarded and easy, like the weight he'd carried for a century had genuinely eased overnight.

"Let her wait a few minutes," he murmured, pulling me closer against him, and I went willingly, tucking myself into the warmth of him, the mark on my wrist pulsing steady and content against his chest. "I'd like a little longer before the rest of the world remembers we exist."

We didn't get much longer than that, in truth, but the few minutes we did get felt like something precious and stolen, quiet in a way nothing had been since the night of the rejection ceremony, and when his mouth finally found mine, slow and certain, unlike anything Ryker had ever offered me in all our years of careful, dutiful affection, I understood for the first time what people meant when they talked about a kiss changing something in a person.

It wasn't desperate. It wasn't rushed. It was steady, the same way Kael himself was steady, like he had all the time in the world now to learn exactly how I liked to be kissed, and I melted into it, my hand curling into the front of his shirt, feeling the mark between us hum warm and bright, like it approved of exactly where we'd finally arrived.

When we finally pulled apart, both of us a little breathless, he rested his forehead against mine, eyes closed, a small, satisfied smile still curving his mouth.

"I've wanted to do that since the library," he admitted. "Since before I had any right to want it."

"You've had the right for a while now," I said softly. "I just don't think either of us was ready to admit it yet."

Nyra found us not long after, exactly as predicted, bursting into the warded room with a stack of blank parchment and more energy than I'd ever seen from her, questions spilling out faster than either of us could answer them, about how the transformation had felt, about the exact moment the wolf had calmed, about whether I'd felt anything different in the mark itself during the shift.

"One question at a time," Kael said, laughing again, and Nyra huffed but slowed down enough to actually let us answer.

By the time we made it down to the main hall for a very late breakfast, word had clearly already spread through the castle, the staff offering small, knowing smiles as we passed, and even Soren, waiting near the dining hall with his usual smirk firmly in place, looked genuinely relieved underneath the teasing.

"I take it the night went well," he said. "Given that you're both walking around looking considerably less like people who spent the evening bracing for disaster."

"It went better than well," Kael said, and something proud entered his voice as he glanced at me. "It went further than I ever let myself hope for."

The warmth of the morning didn't last through the whole day, though. Elder Mathis found us not long after breakfast, his expression carefully neutral in the way I'd come to recognize meant he was working hard to hide whatever he actually thought.

"I heard the night was a success," he said, inclining his head toward me with something that might have been genuine respect. "That's remarkable news, truly. The kind of breakthrough this court hasn't dared hope for in generations."

"It is," Kael agreed, though I heard the wariness creeping into his voice, the same wariness I felt gathering in my own chest at Mathis's careful tone.

"I only wonder," Mathis continued, "how quickly word of this success will travel beyond our walls, now that Lady Vesna has already witnessed enough to know something significant is happening here. A cure to a century old curse, tied entirely to one woman's presence, is the kind of news that makes every rival kingdom recalculate exactly how badly they want to control her." His eyes flicked to me, not unkind exactly, but heavy with warning. "I'd advise caution, going forward, about who learns the details of what happened last night, and how much of it they're allowed to see for themselves."

The warmth of the morning cooled several degrees at his words, because as much as I wanted to simply exist in the relief of last night's success, Mathis wasn't wrong, and the reminder settled uncomfortably alongside the memory of Vesna's careful, watching eyes at dinner two nights before.

"He's right," I said quietly, once Mathis had continued on his way. "This changes things. If it gets out that I'm not just a bloodline curiosity, but an actual working cure, people won't just want to study me anymore, Kael. They'll want to take me."

Kael's hand found mine, steady and certain despite the tension now gathering in his shoulders. "Then we make sure they don't get the chance," he said. "Whatever it takes."

Elara's POVThe days following Mathis's removal from the council brought a strange kind of quiet to Nightfall Hollow, not the uneasy quiet of watching shadows in archways, but something closer to relief, Like the whole castle had been holding its breath for weeks without realizing it and had only just remembered how to breathe normally again."You look lighter today," Nyra observed, watching me across the library table where we'd fallen back into our usual morning routine, though the texts in front of us now had less to do with ancient bloodlines and more to do with simple, practical matters, court customs, the history of Nightfall Hollow's founding, things I found myself wanting to learn now rather than needing to for survival."I feel lighter," I admitted, closing the book I'd been only half reading. "I didn't realize how much weight I was carrying, waiting for the next thing to go wrong, until some of it actually lifted.""Enjoy it while it lasts," Nyra said, though there was war

Elara's POVThe council chamber had a formality to it I hadn't yet experienced during my weeks in Nightfall Hollow, tall stone pillars lining a room built to hold judgment rather than comfort, and as I walked beside Kael toward the raised seats where the elders had already gathered.I felt every one of Freya's lessons settling over my shoulders like armor, straighten your spine, don't grip anything too tightly, let silence work in your favor rather than filling it out of nerves.Elder Mathis sat among the other council members, his expression carefully composed, though I caught the smallest flicker of something sharper cross his face when he saw Kael's grim expression. When he noticed Soren and Nyra falling into place at the edges of the room rather than their usual positions, when he understood, perhaps before anyone said a word, that this gathering hadn't been called for ordinary business."My King," Mathis said, rising slightly in greeting, his voice smooth as ever. "This is an un

Elara's POVSoren brought the news to us just after breakfast, his expression caught somewhere between wary and confused, the kind of look that told me whatever he was about to say wasn't going to be simple."There's someone at the border asking to see Elara," he said. "Alone, if she's willing. He says it's urgent, and he says he's not here on his father's business."My stomach dropped before he even said the name, some old instinct already recognizing the shape of what was coming, and when Soren finally said it. Ryker, I felt Kael go rigid beside me at the breakfast table, his jaw tightening in a way I recognized from the very first morning at the border weeks ago."Absolutely not," Kael said. "Not alone. Not after everything we've just learned about his father's involvement with Mathis.""He might be here because of that involvement," I said carefully, though my own pulse was racing at the thought of standing in front of Ryker again, at the memory of the clearing still sharp enoug

Ryker's POVThe letter arrived sealed in plain wax, no house crest pressed into it, delivered by a rider I didn't recognize who refused to wait for a reply, and I carried it up to my room before I opened it, some old instinct telling me this wasn't something I wanted my father reading over my shoulder before I understood it myself. The handwriting inside wasn't one I knew, careful and slanted, and it took me a moment to realize the letter wasn't addressed to me at all, but to my father, apparently delivered to my room by mistake by a rider who didn't know one Ashwood from another, and even as guilt told me to seal it back up and hand it over unread, curiosity won out the moment I saw Elara's name written plainly in the second line.*Elder Mathis sends his gratitude for the information regarding the Ashwood ceremony and the girl's history. It has proven useful in building the council's case against the King's attachment. He asks that you continue supplying whatever details you can re

Elara's POVNone of us slept easily after Soren's report, and by the next morning I found myself standing at my window long before the household usually stirred, watching the mist curl low over the garden where everything had felt so simple and certain only days before, and wondering how something that had felt like the safest place in the world could so quickly become a place I now watched for shadows in every archway.Kael found me there, his own eyes shadowed with the same lack of sleep, and for a moment neither of us said anything, simply standing together in the quiet, gathering the strength for whatever the day was about to ask of us."I want to write to Vesna," I said finally. "Directly. Not through court channels, not through anything Mathis could intercept. If her name is being used without her knowledge, she deserves to know. And if it isn't, I'd rather find that out honestly than keep guessing in the dark.""That's a risk," Kael said carefully. "If she is involved, you'd be

Elara's POV"What did you have in mind," Kael asked, and I could hear the careful restraint in his voice, the effort it took him not to simply order Mathis dragged in front of the court that very evening and demanded an explanation, an instinct I understood even as I knew it wouldn't get us anywhere useful."We can't confront him without proof," I said, turning the torn page over in my hands, studying the ragged edge where it had been ripped free. "If we accuse him and we're wrong, or even if we're right but can't prove it, we hand him exactly the excuse he needs to paint us as paranoid, or worse, as a threat to the stability of this court. We need something solid. Something that doesn't just rely on suspicion and a missing page.""She's right," Nyra said. "Mathis has spent decades building trust in this court. Tearing that down requires more than a torn page and a shadow in a garden, however suspicious both might be."Kael's jaw tightened, but he nodded slowly, some of the tension
