Is there a limit to the weird things that can happen to me? Moon goddess, just give me a break already. Something about this man sends chills down my skin, and I'm not about to stand here and find out what that is. I dust off my soiled dress and turn to leave. "Who touched you?" His deep baritone voice hits me like a shockwave, freezing me in place. I can feel those gold eyes on me like a physical weight, patient and unblinking, as if he has all the time in the world and fully expects me to fill the silence. I would, on any other day. I would have tripped over my own words trying to explain myself to someone who looked like that. But it's getting dark fast, and I need to find my way home. Not that my stepmother is particularly eager to welcome me back, but it's either that or sleep on the street. Bad things happened to girls who weren't home before dark in Nightclaw territory. Especially human girls. "I have to go," I say, brushing the dirt off my skirt again and ignoring the way my legs still feel unsteady. I don't look at him. Looking at him feels dangerous in a way I can't name, like standing too close to a fire that has no business burning that bright. I walk past him yet he didn't move. Good. At least I can find my way back without someone following me. I cut through the trees in the direction I pray leads back to my backpack, my skin prickling the entire time, half expecting a hand to close around my arm the way Cullen's always does. It never comes. The tree line thins. The school fence appears through the gaps. I finally let myself breathe. My generous stepbrother didn't touch my backpack. By the time I reach my bike, the entire school grounds are empty. At least I can ride home in peace. *** Kyrell Third person Kyrell doesn't move from his position. He stands exactly where she left him, in the middle of the forest, like there's a land mine beneath his feet. Not because he can't move, but because he knows that if he takes one step in her direction, he can't trust what comes after it. He clenches his jaw until it aches. His claws digs into his palms, drawing blood. Lycans don't shift the way werewolves do on a full moon. They shift at will. And right now, his beast is pulling at him. Furious with him. *Go after her.* His beast said in his head. *I can't.* *Why? She's ours. I want her now.* *She isn't ours. Yet.* *Then why did we track her here if you didn't want to mark her?* Honestly, he doesn't know how to answer that. He came to the Nightclaw pack to secure the Alpha's daughter for the Crimson Hunt, but his wolf has been restless ever since. The Hunt is less than a week away, and he has already found his mate, only for her to turn out to be his worst nightmare. He had gone into the forest for a run to quiet his wolf. Then a scent stopped him cold. He traced it to behind the school, his eyes landing on a petite figure crumpled on the ground. He was in his lycan form but fully aware, and his beast had gone ravenous watching her get bullied. If he hadn't turned and forced himself back into the trees, he would have slit every throat in sight. He may be heartless, but killing children isn't how he shows it. She smelled like earth after rain, and something older underneath, something dark and sweet with no name he could reach for. And then she had walked straight into his chest. He exhales slowly through his nose. A mistake. Her scent still clings to the air around him like she never left. His wolf pushes at him, restless and insistent. *Follow.* His wolf groans. He doesn't. His wolf doesn't understand how much is at stake. His pack's future depends on him choosing the right Luna. His father would never allow him to claim any female without Alpha or Beta blood. There was no wolf scent on her, which means she's either wolfless or human. But every person connected to a pack carried that trace, even humans raised among wolves. Faint, but always present. On her, nothing. Which angers him more than it should. She can't even feel the mate bond. He shifts to his lycan form and cuts deeper into the forest until the Alpha's pack house comes into view. "Prince Kyrell, I.." "Get my beta." Kyrell cuts Alpha Gerald off without breaking stride. He walks into the pack house like he owns it. Gerald nods and signals one of the men at the door. The guest room prepared for him feels suffocating despite the air conditioning and open ventilation. He stands at the window, staring at nothing. "Come in, Samiel," he said, before his beta can knock. "You've been out a long time," Samiel said, shutting the door behind him. He crosses the room and comes to stand beside Kyrell at the window. Kyrell doesn't turn to face him. After a stretch of silence, he moves to sit on the sofa near the bed. "We leave tomorrow." Samiel's brow furrows. "But your father said.." "I know." Samiel steps in front of him. "We can't leave without the Alpha female. You know how difficult your father can be. Going back without Alpha Gerald's daughter won't sit well with him." Kyrell isn't sure if he should tell Samiel his reason for wanting to leave. He had thought finding his mate would be the one thing that saves him, proof he wouldn't have to claim Vesper or any other Alpha female who wasn't his true match. But finding her today feels less like salvation and more like a curse made flesh. Samiel continues, unaware of the silent war Kyrell is losing. "We need a strong Luna fit to carry the Lycan bloodline. Even if by some miracle you find your fated mate, what if she isn't strong enough? What if your father rejects her? What if the pack does?" "We leave tomorrow," Kyrell says. "And as for Vesper, send someone to pick her up before the Crimson Hunt." He needs to leave this place before that scent drives him feral. *You can't leave without her.* Before his wolf can pull at him again, Kyrell shuts him into the darkest corner of his mind and leaves him there.NyxIt's been happening for a week, whatever it was that kept causing me unbearable chest burn. First, it was the rejection, then the day "Prince Alpha" brought me here.I was plotting my escape when the mark began to throb before exploding into pain. That pain kept coming back every now and then. And I don't think today would be any different. Pain doesn't care about birthdays. Just like every other birthdays, I'll be spending this one locked up in the room, with additional pain as a gift. The lock opened, and the security guard walked in, holding a tray of cold food. He kept it on the floor and walked away without a word, like he always did. I didn't know how many guards they were, but he's the only one I've seen so far. After days of trying and failing to understand what he meant by "until I turn," I gave up. There was every possibility that he was just messing with my head, and I refuse to let him.I moved to the bathroom, showered, and changed into one of the dresses the guard br
KyrellThird personKyrell has never hated anyone this much. He hates her so much it literally hurts him when she's in pain. He hated that she had survived the bite. That mark was meant to be for his Luna, reserved for their mating night. At the same time he wouldn't have forgiven himself if she didn't.He walked through the hallway of his mansion, heading to the garage. He wasn't blind. He knows when someone was faking concern. The first time he saw her, she was running from someone, and he confirmed who that person was last night."Alpha." Samiel was already waiting by the car. He didn't say anything else to him when they got in. Samiel was shocked by last night's events, as was everyone present. It's a relief that the former Alpha and Luna left the ceremony early.Kyrell was angry with himself, and he knows he's the one to blame. His parents already left the leadership of the pack to him and his Luna. He should be at the pack house with her, not here with the abomination he couldn'
NyxI stared at the man in front of me, trying to make sense of his words. I came up with nothing. I didn't understand what the fuck he just said, and he didn't look like he was going to offer any explanation."What do you mean until I turn?" I asked after a brief moment of silence, staring intently at him.Actually, there wasn't silence. There hadn't been since this morning. I've been hearing different sounds and I don't know how that's possible when he's the only person with me. Hell, I don't know anything at this point."Aren't you going to say anything "Alpha"?"He didn't answer, just turned to leave."Don't you think after everything you've done, the least you owe me is an explanation?" I snapped, my eyes fixed on the back of his head.He halted and faced me. His expression turned cold, and his eyes were filled with resentment. He took a step towards me."You," his voice felt like ice on my skin. I didn't know when I stepped back. "You mutt."Suddenly, he closed the distance and
NyxThe sound of birds chirping woke me up, my eyes fluttered open, but my mind was blank for some time. Slowly my eyes scanned the room. Too big for one person, not cramped up with unnecessary furniture, the bed beneath me didn't creak, this wasn't my room.I sat up too fast and the room tilted, the soft bed sinking in a bit. Memories of last night rushed back in pieces. The last thing I remembered was Cullen trying to take me home after the hunt before...My hand flew to my neck and I pushed myself off the bed and crossed the room. My legs were shaking as I walked towards a full-length mirror. I pulled my hair aside and gasped at the sight before me.There was a bandage on the spot that was beginning to throb. I gently took it out to see what was behind. A mark was just below my pulse point, like an animal bite. Four fang marks that seemed to be connecting to a single mark.I touched it, and the mark glowed faintly under my fingers. What on earth? Warmth spread down my neck and into
NyxMy heart skipped two beats, before pounding against my chest again. It was so loud, I'm sure every wolf here already had sore ears. The current attention was a blur, especially when his voice dropped so low, so taunting. For a heartbeat, there was silence, then the uproar began again. Overlapping voices laced with shock and disgust filled the room. Kyrell blinked as if he had just broken off from a trance. That's exactly what it was, a trance."What's going on here?" I didn't realize Vesper had already crossed the room and was now standing beside me. My eyes swept the room. The disgust of the wolves, the anger in the Alpha's eyes, and the confusion in the Luna's. I shifted my gaze back to Vesper, who looked like she was seconds away from tearing me apart."I don't understand. Why are you standing next to this human?" Vesper's voice cracked, like she was refusing to accept reality. What the fuck is the reality? That I'm his mate? That's not possible. I'm not even a werewolf. I sho
NyxWith the number of times my jaw dropped today, I'm surprised it's still attached to my face. Even though I wasn't able to witness it, I'm so happy that Mira found her mate. But then, Cullen?"Cullen? As in my brother Cullen?" I knew my question was stupid but I couldn't help it. Her eyes caught the reflection of the chandelier in the middle of the ballroom."Of course, Nyx. Which other Cullen do you know?" Like I said, I'm happy she found her mate, I just don't get why she is."Cullen is a douchebag." The words slipped out before I could think."He's the future Beta." She had a dreamy look in her eyes. What the fuck?"He's a douchebag." I repeated. I don't know what the mate bond did to her, but she's not paying attention to the douchebag part."And he's so handsome," her eyes found mine, "and he accepted me. We accepted each other." More like you handed your brains to him in exchange for the bond."Is this what you want?" Of course it's all she ever wanted. Is he who she wants th
Kyrell Third person povKyrell stood in front of the full length mirror in his walk-in closet buttoning up his shirt. The closet was probably the size of a standard bedroom yet the feeling of suffocation had not left him. He picked up his suit jacket, sweeping his arms into it as he walked out to
NyxIt's been two days since I got slammed against the wall, but the students won't stop laughing and whispering as I walk to my locker. It doesn't matter if I'm the Beta's daughter or human. Teenagers can be assholes, especially werewolves who believe strength is everything."Hey girl." Mira waves
Nyx I thought I was running but I wasn't. My head was bleeding but I felt the pain in my feet. I found my way to the woods at the back of the school, half falling and walking. The trees shielded me from prying eyes.My mind drifted back to the gold pair of eyes I saw earlier. Or was I imagining th
