CALLA

With all due respect,” I say carefully, “I don’t think—”

“It’s non-negotiable, Miss Pierce,” he interrupts gently. “This arrangement works to both your benefit. You are in need of additional academic credit this semester, are you not?”

Heat floods my face. I nod yes, because while my grades are strong, my extracurriculars are weak. I don’t do clubs. I don’t do sports. I just study and that’s it.

“This tutoring position fulfills that requirement,” he continues. “Declining would mean forfeiting the credit.”

There it is. A choice without choice. I look at Ryder again and the air feels heavier. My pulse spikes severely until I drag my eyes away from him.

“Understood,” I say because I don’t have an option. I really need the credit.

That means every day or every other day with Ryder Monroe. The boy who nearly destroyed my best friend. The boy everyone calls dangerous. The boy who is still watching me like he knows something I don’t. Just like that, my entire senior year tilts on its axis.

Ryder leans back in his chair, calm and unbothered. Senior year was supposed to be simple. It was supposed to be about surviving Miles and Brina one last time. Not this. Not him

*********

I tell myself this is just tutoring. Just a quiet hour in the library for extra credit. Just something to focus on that isn’t Miles and Brina and the way my chest still feels bruised every time I think about them. I get there ten minutes early on purpose because if I’m early, I’m in control. Or so I tell myself.

The library is almost empty. Just a few students doing homework or God knows what on the computers. The late afternoon sun stretches across the long tables. I turn my focus to prepare myself but...

He is already here.

Ryder Monroe sits at the far end of the study table he chose near the art section, his sleeves pushed up, pen resting between his fingers. A textbook is open in front of him, the signature Falcons jacket beside him but he hasn’t worn it so far. Not once.

He looks up when he hears my steps. There is no smile or smirk but my stomach tightens anyway.

“Pierce,” he says.

I set my bag down across from him. “Monroe.”

His mouth twitches, almost amused. “Are we going with last names?”

“It’s tutoring, not a social visit.”

He studies me for a second longer than necessary. Not in a way that makes me uncomfortable. It's like he is trying to figure me out.

I pull out my notebook and the assignment sheet. “We will start with chapter four. The practice questions at the end.”

“I already did them.”

My head snaps up. “You what?”

He turns the book toward me. Every question is answered neatly and correctly.

I blink. “You could have waited.”

His eyebrow lifts slightly. “You are upset I did the work?”

I hate that I don’t have a good answer.

“I’m not upset. I just—” I stop to reset. “We are supposed to go through it together otherwise I don’t get credit.”

He leans back in his chair, calm. “Okay. Go through it.”

Is he testing me? I don’t think so. He looks too serious.

I glance down at the first question. “Explain the economic impact of— ”

“Trade restrictions during the early Industrial Revolution,” he finishes easily. “They slowed industrial expansion at first but strengthened domestic production over time.”

My pen pauses mid air. “You memorized that?”

“No, I studied and understood it.”

The correction is subtle but precise. He doesn’t look bored or arrogant.

Something in me shifts. That doesn’t fit the story I have been telling myself for a year.

I clear my throat. “Fine. Then explain it in your own words.”

He does clearly and confidently with no hesitation.

I sit back slowly.

“So you don’t need a tutor,” I say before I can stop myself.

His gaze lifts to mine. “I didn’t say that.”

“You seem to know what you are doing. What am I doing here?”

“Working for extra credit. I thought that was already discussed.” His brows are slightly drawn. Then, “Relax, Pierce. I do need a lot of help in other subjects. History not so much.”

I swallow and look back down at the page. “Let’s move on.”

We work through another section. He answers most of it without help. When I correct him once, he listens without arguing. This isn’t what I expected.

I expected resistance, attitude, maybe recklessness.

Instead, he is focused and quiet.

Every now and then I feel his eyes on me, staring. It makes my skin hyper aware of everything.

“You always tap your pen when you are thinking too hard,” he says suddenly.

I freeze. “What?”

“You have done it five times.”

I immediately still my hand. “That’s irrelevant.”

“It’s distracting.”

“You are the one watching me.”

He doesn’t deny it. My pulse quickens for reasons I don’t understand.

We move to the next problem. I reread the instructions twice.

“You don’t trust your first read,” he says quietly.

I look up sharply. “Excuse me?”

“You always go back even when you were right the first time.”

“How would you know what I ‘always’ do?”

“I have had classes with you since sophomore year.”

“You have been observing me?”

His gaze doesn’t waver. “You observe people too.”

“That’s different.”

“How?”

Because I observe to survive. I observe so I don’t get blindsided.

I don’t say that. Instead, I say, “Focus on the assignment.”

A small silence settles between us. It is not awkward but it is charged.

I shift in my seat and lean forward to point at something in his notebook.

“Our answer here needs more detail—”

My shoulder brushes his. It’s brief, totally accidental. But the contact sends a current through me that makes me pull back immediately. He doesn’t move closer or away.

I straighten, annoyed at myself. I am not reacting to this. I am not.

My pen slips from my fingers and rolls off the table.

“Great,” I mutter.

We both bend down at the same time. Our hands reach and touch. His fingers close around mine instead of the pen. They are warm, still, and not gripping. The moment stretches until I look up.

He is closer than I expected, close enough that I can see the faint scar near his eyebrow. Close enough to notice the shift in his breathing. Neither of us pulls away. My heart is pounding so loudly I’m sure he can hear it.

“You freeze when you are about to do something... different,” he says quietly. “Something you are unsure about.”

My throat tightens. “What are you talking about?”

His thumb shifts slightly against my knuckles.

“You are doing it now.”

My breath stumbles. I yank my hand back first and sit upright too quickly, knocking my knee against the table.

“I don’t freeze.”

“You do.”

“You don’t know me so stop analyzing me.”

“I know enough.”

Silence drops again, heavier this time. I grab my pen and stand abruptly. “I think that’s enough for today.”

“It’s been thirty minutes,” he says, looking at the time.

“I have other things to do.”

“Like avoiding me?”

I glare at him. “Like having a life.”

His jaw shifts slightly. “Right.”

I shove my notebook into my bag. “Next session is Wednesday.”

“I will be here.”

There is something about the way he says it certainly that makes my heart leap. I sling my bag over my shoulder, avoiding eye contact.

“You don’t have to look at me like I’m a threat, you know?” he says suddenly.

My spine stiffens. “I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. You flinch every time I am too close.”

I meet his eyes fully this time. “You are a threat. Your reputation precedes you, Monroe.” The words leave before I can think them over.

He doesn’t hesitate when he says, “Not to you.”

The conviction in his voice unsettles me more than anger would have.

I don’t respond. I can’t.

I turn and walk out of the library without looking back but my pulse won’t calm down. My hand still feels warm where he touched me and that’s the part that scares me.

I have spent a year believing Ryder Monroe is dangerous. Today was the first day I questioned why.

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   I Noticed You

CALLAA small smile tugs at his mouth, complete opposite of what I expect. “Sounds like your universe needed better planning.”I let out a small humorless laugh, shaking my head. “Yeah. I guess it did.”The teasing fades from his expression as he holds my gaze a moment longer. “Someone who never looked at you the way you deserved could never be the center of your universe, Pierce.”The smile leaves my face. I don’t know whether he realizes what he has just said, but it settles somewhere deep inside me. Miles had always been the one I looked toward, hoping one day he would look back the same way. Ryder never had to ask me to chase his attention. Somehow, from the very beginning, he had been the one looking at me.“I know.” I shake my head, my throat tight. “I’m just... I do like you, Ryder. A lot. Hanging out with you, especially yesterday, has been the best time I have had with anyone in forever.”“But?” He looks braced for rejection, but his eyes are soft.“I want more of that... wit

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   You Are Right

CALLA I sit at the blacktopped lab table, my notebook open to a blank page, trying to focus on the worksheet instead of the two boys bracketing me. Science class feels like a trap today.Miles is on my left, leaning in, his arm brushing mine in that familiar way. It should spark something— the old flutter I used to chase for hours in my head. But it doesn’t. It’s just ordinarily warm like a sweater I have worn too many times. On my right, Ryder reaches for the pipette. His fingers graze the back of my hand as he passes it over, and heat shoots straight up my arm, settling low in my stomach. My breath catches. I yank my hand back, cheeks burning, hyper aware of how close his knee is to mine under the table.“You okay, Pierce?” he murmurs, voice low and teasing. His knee bumps mine deliberately, igniting that spark again."I’m fine,” I whisper, eyes glued to the instructions, trying not to move because if I do, I’ll touch him again and want it more. My heart is doing that annoying flip

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   I Like Him Too

CALLAI’m not sure when exactly my heart stops racing after that moment with Ryder. At some point I think it slows down just enough for me to function. The ride home passes in a blur. Every time I close my eyes, I see Ryder’s grin in between the scenes of the whole day, the way he looked at me, and at the beach. I force that one out of my frontal lobe because I’m not ready to process it yet.By the time the cab pulls up outside the house, I have managed to convince myself that I’m calm. I pay the driver, climb out, and head for the front door. The second I step inside, that illusion disappears.Miles is in the living room. For a moment, I just stop. Of all the people I expected to see, he wasn’t one of them. His gaze lifts from his phone, and the surprise lasts less than a second before I force my expression back under control.“Hey.”Miles stands. His eyes sweep over me once before settling on my face.“Hey. Where have you been?”The question is casual enough to not sound interrogati

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   Good Kisser

RYDER“Damn, Pierce. If I knew you were such a good kisser, I wouldn’t have waited that long.”Calla’s eyes widen before she narrows them at me, mock offense written all over her face.“So you thought I was bad at it. That’s why you waited?”“Not even close.”I step a little closer. The teasing look on her face slips for a second. Her gaze drops briefly before finding mine again, and I feel my chest tighten in a way I can’t quite control. Being this close to her has become dangerous. Every time she lets me in, every time she lowers her guard even a little, I want more.I have for a long time. Long before she kissed me back and long before she started looking at me the way she is looking at me now.“I wanted you to be ready to want me,” I add after a beat. Her face flickers but not with defiance. I know where her mind probably went. I know how she feels about Miles. I’m not blind, I’ve seen it. He is just to dense to realize. And on my part, I think she could do better. Before she can

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   I Want You To Kiss Me

CALLAI stand frozen for a moment, the heat from where he was still lingering in the air between us. My hands hang uselessly at my sides, and I don’t even notice how tense my shoulders are. I can’t tell how long I have been like this, just... existing in the aftermath of what almost happened. The world around me feels distant, the faint hum of people leaving the rink, the laughter fading. None of it reaches me fully. My mind is scattered. Part of me replays it, over and over. The way he leaned in, how close he got, the way his fingers brushed against my skin. Part of me wants to turn away and forget it, convince myself I imagined how electric it felt. But I know I didn’t. I know that shiver that ran down my body, the tight twist in my stomach, the way my breath hitched, was all real.I don’t realize I’ve been standing like that for several minutes until a voice cuts through my fog.“Coming?”He is standing there, his hockey gear gone, back in his casual clothes. The question pulls me

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   Until You Say Yes

CALLAJust watch me.The words keep repeating in my head long after he is gone.I shouldn’t be here. That’s the thought that comes after as I sit on the cold metal bench, trying to look like I belong in a place that clearly isn’t mine. The rink is loud as expected. The sharp scrape of skates against ice, voices shouting and laughing... It’s messy and unfiltered, nothing like the polished games at school where everything feels controlled.I shift slightly, eyes scanning the ice without really focusing on anything. I told him I wasn’t into hockey. That this would probably be the most boring day of my life. I was prepared to prove that. Instead, my gaze finds him automatically. My brain doesn’t even ask permission anymore.Ryder moves differently out there. Here, he doesn’t look like someone trying to prove anything. He just plays. His body is fluid, already knowing what to do before anyone else catches up. Someone passes to him and he catches it clean, shifting direction so quickly I

CALLAI follow Ryder down the hall, my backpack tight against my shoulder. He doesn’t say a word other than “let's try a different study spot”. He just walks, purposefully and confidently. I keep up, my heart thumping, trying not to let the knot in my stomach betray me.He opens a door at the far e

CALLAI try to ignore the lingering heat of Ryder’s touch from yesterday, but it’s impossible. I tell myself it’s nothing but just a little accident I should get ove

  • SAINT, SINNER AND THE GIRL IN BETWEEN   Summer Fling

CALLAThis summer felt like a movie.Sun on my skin, water in my hair.
