LUCAS'S POV

I realized a little too late that my Beta had gone mad.

Over the weeks, my best friend and Beta, Chris had come up with a strange theory that the reason for my recent outbursts was the fact that I didn't have sex often.

At first, I thought it was a joke but a few weeks ago, he had invited the council of elders for a meeting to discuss the issue, and much to my surprise, he had gone ahead with the plan.

"Chris!" I snarled.

I stormed down the steps and through the garden until I got to his car.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing, man?" I snapped at him.

"Getting my best friend a pretty lady to cool his nerves with," He replied and laughed. "For real, you need to relax."

"You would take her back to wherever you brought her from at once!" I snapped.

He stared at the gold plated watch on his wrist and he frowned.

"It's well past noon already, and guess who you sent to far away California, just to sign a peace treaty with Alpha Damon?"

I sighed in frustration and he continued.

"Yup. That's right. Me!"

"But I didn't ask for her," I argued.

"Then prove to me that you still have a heart in there and let her stay for the night," He said.

I thought about it for a moment, and decided that I didn't really have an option.

"Fine," I grunted. "Just for the night."

Chris winked at me before speeding off and I muttered a curse as I made my way back to the door. She was still standing at the door, with her head bent low to the ground.

"Your name?" I demanded.

"Em - em - Emily," She stammered and looked up at me.

"Lucas," I grunted in response. "Lucas Sinclair."

She nodded glumly and I assessed her for a few seconds before ushering her in.

She was young, probably twenty or so, and very beautiful. Her hazel colored eyes were small and almond shaped, and her lips were full and bright red. I noticed the faint glow on her spotless skin and I wondered where my Beta had managed to buy a girl that looked very much like a princess from.

I glared hard at the transparent white gown that unsuccessfully covered her silky smooth skin from my sight and I was instantly irritated. Did she think that wearing a see through gown would make me accept her?

"Listen up," I grunted. "You'll stay out of my way and out of my sight for the rest of the day. Tomorrow, you'll be gone."

I noticed that her mood turned sour instantly, but I didn't care one bit. By morning, she was going to be gone from my life for good.

I called my maid and instructed her to show Emily to the guest room, while I went upstairs to my own room to get some rest. After a long and tiring morning of negotiations with the Alpha of a neighboring pack, I was exhausted. I fell face first on my clothes infested bed, and a few minutes later I was already fast asleep.

When I eventually woke up, it was late in the evening already. I stood up from my bed and spun around, confused. Right before I slept, my room was a mess, with clothes and files scattered across the drawers. Now, everything except my bed was neatly tucked in place.

I picked the intercom, and requested for my maid's presence and a few seconds later, she knocked on the door.

"Come in," I grunted.

She bowed slightly and I stared at her.

"You didn't knock when you came in hours ago," I said. "How come you suddenly have manners?"

She returned the stare, confusion written all over her face and I rose to my feet in anger.

"I've warned you about entering my room while I am asleep, haven't I?" I snapped.

"Yes, my King," She nodded. "I never did it again."

"Then how do you explain this?" I pointed at my neatly folded clothes in the wardrobe.

From the expression on her face, it was clear that she was confused, and that was when it hit me. It wasn't her. It was that little bitch, Emily! She had entered my room when I was asleep. She had probably gone through my important documents. What if she was a spy from another pack? A hundred thoughts ran through my head all at once, and without thinking further, I bolted out of the room and made my way down the stairs.

"Emily!"

She appeared from the kitchen immediately. She wore a red apron over her white gown and there was a spoon in her hand.

"You were in my room," I snarled.

"I - I saw the door half open," She stammered. "And it looked a bit disorganized, so I thought to help you arrange it."

I inched closer to her, so close that I could hear the sound of her heart thumping in her chest.

"Who do you work for?"

"What?"

"I said who the fuck do you work for?" I snapped.

She broke down in tears at once and I was instantly taken aback. Had I been too harsh on her?

"I just wanted to help," She sobbed. "I'm sorry I entered without knocking."

I glared hard at her for a while. I hated to admit it but she was telling the truth. She didn't even look like she could hurt a fly.

"And what the hell is this?" I asked, as I walked into the kitchen.

"I made dinner," She muttered. "Here, you can try it out."

She served a portion of broccoli cheddar soup in a silver bowl and placed it on the table before me.

"After you," I said and handed the spoon over to her.

With shaky hands, she took the spoon and started eating while I watched.

"I have maids," I growled. "What is your business here?"

"I was just trying to help," She muttered.

"Then go to your room and don't come out until morning!" I snapped, banging my fist on the table. "That's how you can help!"

Emily rose up from the table and ran upstairs to the guest room in tears. I could hear her sobs as she ran but I didn't care. I had seen many women like her before and I knew what they all wanted - a taste of my wealth. Their tricks never worked on me.

I took a spoon and had a taste of the soup. Surprisingly, it tasted really good. With the way she looked so frail, I never expected that she would know how to cook.

But I was not going to be carried away with that. Tomorrow, she was going to be gone from my life and gone for good!

Emily's POVI knew something was wrong the moment Lucas carried me back to our room.My body felt weak. It was as though something inside me had been stretched too far.I could still walk if I forced myself to.I could still speak. But every part of me felt drained.Lucas did not let me take a single step on my own.The moment we entered the room, he carried me straight to the bed and sat beside me.His face was tense. His jaw was locked tightly.I could tell he was trying not to show how worried he was.Unfortunately for him, I knew him too well now."You should rest," he said.I smiled weakly."You have said that at least ten times tonight.""I'll say it another ten."That actually made me laugh a little. The laugh quickly faded when I remembered what had happened in the hallway. The shadow. The connection. The way it had felt.I looked down at my hands. They looked normal.Completely normal.Yet I could still remember the feeling. It had not been a conversation. Not exactly. But so

  • SOLD AS THE ALPHA KING'S PET    CHAPTER 135

Lucas POVI stood there for several seconds with Emily weak against my chest while the corridor remained completely still around us. The lights had stopped flickering, the shaking had ended, and the cold pressure in the air was finally gone, yet none of it made me relax. If anything, the quiet made my thoughts louder. Emily’s words repeated themselves inside my head. The others felt it too. That meant they were connected somehow. Not by sight. Not by sound.Something deeper.Something worse.I tightened my arm around Emily carefully and looked down at her. Her face had gone pale, and there was sweat gathered near her forehead despite how cold the corridor had been moments ago.“You need to sit down,” I told her quietly.“I’m fine,” she whispered immediately.“You can barely stand.”“I said I’m fine.”Her voice was weak, but stubborn enough to almost make me sigh. Even exhausted, she still tried to fight everything alone.I bent slightly and lifted her into my arms before she could pro

Lucas POVI was still holding Emily when the last trace of that thing disappeared, but my mind had already moved ahead of the moment. Her words kept repeating in my head. They felt it too. That was not just a warning. It was a fact. Whatever those things were, they were connected in a way we did not fully understand yet, and by destroying one of them, we had just sent a message to the rest.I tightened my hold on her slightly as I looked down at her face. She looked drained, far more than she had earlier. Her eyes were still open, but there was a dullness in them that had not been there before. It was not weakness. It was exhaustion. Deep exhaustion, the kind that came from something more than just the body.“Emily,” I said quietly. She blinked slowly and looked up at me, her lips parting slightly as if she wanted to speak, but nothing came out at first. I could feel her breathing against me, uneven now, like her body was trying to catch up with what had just happened.“You need to re

Lucas POVI stood there for a few seconds longer, still holding Emily in my arms, my eyes fixed on the spot where the shadow had been. Nothing remained. No mark, no trace, nothing to show that something unnatural had just existed there. But I knew better than to trust what I could see. The absence of something dangerous did not mean it was gone. Sometimes it only meant it had moved.Emily’s weight shifted slightly against me, and I looked down at her. Her eyes were still open, but they were heavy now, her strength drained from whatever she had just done. Her breathing was slow, uneven, like her body was trying to catch up with what had just happened.“We need to get you back,” I said quietly. She nodded faintly, but she didn’t speak.I did not wait any longer. I lifted her properly into my arms and turned back down the corridor. The guards moved out of the way immediately, their eyes filled with questions they did not dare ask. I ignored them. Right now, nothing mattered more than get
