The house was quiet like a grave, at least at a graveyard you hear the slow swat or breeze or you hear the chirping of birds but in this case the house was just eerily quiet.
Trent’s car was in the driveway which means he was at home, probably came by to do something in his study. I headed to my room and dropped my handbag. Just one stare around the house had me thinking. I used to remember when my laughter mixed with that of Trent’s would bounce off the walls.
We weren’t able to keep our hands off each other, grinning like fools while we stared at each other in love……or rather while I stared at him in love. I didn’t believe someone who do the things he was doing to me to someone they loved. Our marriage had looked like a match made in heaven.
But then he had changed. It all happened exactly Candice came back. Candice was his ex lover and he had opened up to me and told me he had loved Candice very much and insisted that he was over her but I couldn’t help but think of this was all because of her.
I wasn’t one to apportion blames but it was getting a bit frustrating. Trent doesn’t look at me the same way he stared at me when we got married. Before it had been genuine care and adoration and his eyes were filled wouu to cold familiarity and even……disgust, like he couldn’t stand him.
I keep asking what or where I had gone wrong to make someone who I thought loved me to hate me this much. He had waved it off and said I did nothing and nothing was wrong but he was just busy.
Another issue was why hasn’t named me his Luna yet. He had almost did, but exactly two days to when Candice came back in time he just didn’t do it. He kept postponing till I got tired of asking. He wouldn’t even stay in the same room with me. I sighed and kicked off my shoes and lay back on the bed.
Life wasn’t fair, I wondered what would make a man who used to at least adore me so much to turn into a cold, uncaring person…..to me. He is even friendly with his business partners, even his rival beta. But his reaction to my presence was enough to make me cry.
Maybe I was overreacting, maybe I was doing too much, maybe he was right, maybe he was busy. I thought of all the possible “Maybes” until I started to hear the sounds coming from Trent’s bedroom.
Was that a woman’s moan?
I was on my feet on her instant, her heart pounded like crazy. Let this be a freaking dream please. I rushed to his room and paused at the door to listen. It was indeed a woman’s moan I heard and the tone of the voice sounded familiar. For a minute I was so stunned at how far Trent has gone with his “Hating-Veronica” thing. Tears stung my eyes and my heart felt like it was going to stop. I would have run away but I scowled and pushed open the door. I was expecting what I was thinking but nothing prepared me for this……..
There on what used to be our matrimonial bed, was Trent and on him almost undressed was…..Candice?
“Candice?” I called and she turned and even had the nerve to flash a smile. Trent looked pissed.
“What are you doing here?” he asked getting to his feet and righting his clothes. I stared at him in disbelief, what did he mean by that.
“I live here remember. You and I are MARRIED!!” I yell and his dark eyes suddenly looked a shade darker.
“Well, news flash I don’t want you anymore slut. Can’t you see it, aren’t you perceptive enough. You have a wolf can’t she even smell that I no longer want you” he roared and I stared at him in shock. Trent hasn’t even said this to me since he seemed aloof but here he was about to cheat on me and still talking like it was my fault. Why even hurt was the fact that it was my best friend.
“Trent, why are you doing this to me? What did I do wrong?” I asked and Candice grinned, she didn’t even bother checking herself, it was she was openly showing me that she was rolling in the sheets with my man and didn’t care.
“Isn’t it obvious by now, dear friend. He doesn’t love you anymore. We love each other. No one is loving a cheap whore like you” she hissed and I just stared at her, too stunned to utter a word. Here was someone I once thought was my only and best friend. Have she forgotten the moments we used to have together, all we have been through together.
“How could you Candice?” I said, tears pouring down my face. She did a mock imitation of my crying face before smiling.
“How could I what? Why don’t you like accepting reality. He was mine all along, I am his, not some trash like you. Have it in mind you ain’t getting nobody” she said and my heart shattered.
“Yes” Trent agreed. He folded his arms and gave me the most hateful stare that I have ever gotten in y life.
“I no longer want you in my life Veronica. You’re……..what should I call it……..”
“Her services are no longer needed” Candice interrupted, purring. Trent grinned at her before turning to me.
“Right, you heard her…..your services are no longer needed Veronica” he said. I stared at him in surprise.
“What do you mean?” I asked and he flashed a charming smile, ironically the smile that used to make me go head over heels now made my heart beat faster.
“I want a divorce” he said and the tiny pieces that remained of my heart exploded.
“Divorce?” I whimpered and he nodded.
“Yeah” he shoved a paper in my hands, “Time to say good bye Veronica”
Veronica’s POVThe trapdoor slammed shut above us with a sound like a coffin closing, and for a moment the cellar was so dark I couldn’t tell where the walls ended and the air began. The only light was the narrow beam of Rowan’s flashlight dragging across the dirt floor, across the crates and the old tools, across Mrs. Lloyd’s face where she sat in the corner with baby Zephyr pressed tight to her chest. The baby wasn’t crying anymore. He had gone quiet in that way newborns do when they sense something is wrong, and the silence was worse than any sound could have been.Rowan stood in the middle of the room, water dripping from his jacket onto the ground, blood drying in dark lines down his neck from where I’d gotten him earlier on the road. He hadn’t shifted. Not yet. His eyes were still human, but they were too bright, too gold around the edges, and that meant his wolf was already awake under the skin, waiting for permission. He looked around the cellar slowly, like he was appraising
The text stayed on my screen long after I read it, burning into my eyes until I had to look away. You killed the wrong brother. The real Alpha King is still coming. My fingers went cold around the phone.Chloe took it from me before I could answer, and the color drained from her face the moment she saw it. For a long second none of us spoke, because what was there to say when the worst wasn’t over yet?Callum was already moving, his jaw locked and his eyes scanning the room like he expected the walls to come down. He snatched the phone, checked the number, and cursed under his breath. “Burner. Bounced through Canada. Voss’s old territory.” He looked up at me. “Did you tell anyone we were here?”I shook my head. “Only you. Only Mrs. Lloyd.”Mrs. Lloyd pressed a hand to her mouth. “I didn’t tell anyone. I swear on my life.”Callum didn’t waste another second. “We’re moving him. Tonight. This hospital isn’t safe.”“But his surgery—”“Isn’t finished yet, I know,” he cut in, softer now. “
Trent was standing in the doorway like death came back to collect a debt.“Hello, brother,” he said, rain dripping off his jacket. “Miss me?”Zephyr’s hand snapped around mine. His eyes went from weak to Alpha in half a second.“Get. Out.” His voice was shredded but it still shook the room.Trent smiled. Slow. Crooked. The same smile I remembered from two years ago before he tried to kill me.“I would, but we have unfinished business.” His eyes flicked to me. Then down to my stomach, even though baby Zephyr wasn’t here. “You stole my son. You stole my pack. You stole my life.”Callum moved first. He had his gun out before Trent even blinked.“Hands up. Now.”Trent didn’t move. He just tilted his head. “You really think a bullet stops me, detective?”The air got heavy. The smell hit me next. Wet fur. Blood. Wolf.He wasn’t alone. Two men stepped in behind him. Voss’s men. Their eyes were already gold. Already shifting. The hospital alarms started screaming.“Veronica, behind me,” Zephy
Chapter 85Veronica’s POVThe name felt right the second I said it. Zephyr. My baby opened his eyes like he knew it too. Like he was answering me. “Hi, Zephyr,” I whispered. “That’s you.”He made a small sound and closed his eyes again. Outside, the night was quiet. Inside, my heart was loud.Chloe came in with tea. She saw my face and smiled. “You named him?”I nodded. “Zephyr. After his father.” Chloe didn’t argue. She just sat next to me. “It’s a strong name,” she said. “He’ll need it.”I looked down at him. He was so small. But he already survived more than most adults. I wasn’t going to let anything happen to him.The next morning came fast. Zephyr woke up crying at 4am. I fed him, changed him, and walked with him until the sun came up. Java checked him over. “He’s healthy. You’re doing great.”“Thank you,” I said. But my mind was already at the station.Callum texted: Come by 10. We found something on the burner phone.I left Zephyr with Chloe and Java. Leavi
FourI wasn’t telling him, or anyone. They didn’t deserve to know, no one cared. Trent would want to keep me under tabs for his child which is the exact same reason I didn’t want him to know. I didn’t want to see him again, ever. He had nearly ruined my mental health and my sanity. I didn’t want an
ThreeThe hotel was very from our house, or rather Trent’s and Candice’s house. I had made sure it was so. I had cried for almost an hour immediately I checked in. The realization of what really happened hit me hard and I just didn’t know if I would ever recover. The hotel was nice and distracting
Chapter 6Veronica's POVI could almost feel his eyes burrowing holes at the back of my head as he stared at me for what felt like hours but in reality was just a few seconds." So what do you say? Is the big alpha about to reject me?" I asked him, my voice purring and my speech slurred. He pulled
Five How could someone look so handsome yet dangerous at the same time? I watched as he headed my direction and sat in the chair in front of him. I flashed him a drunken grin.“Hi” I said and he ignored me. Or rather just stared, like he was seeing someone for the first time.“Hi” I sai
