LOGINEvelyn POV
I looked at Adrian, drinking in every detail of his perfectly sculpted face—the sharp jawline, the aristocratic nose, the steel-grey eyes that had once made my heart race. Now, all I could see was the disgust that filled those beautiful features whenever he looked at me.
In my previous life, I had worked so hard to earn even a fraction of his warmth. I’d learned company management from scratch, studying late into the night until my eyes burned, all so I could be helpful in his business empire.
I’d taught myself to cook his favourite dishes, spending hours in the kitchen perfecting recipes that would make him smile. To please Adrian, I’d even taken care of his mother, Margaret. I was available at her beck and call twenty-four hours a day, hoping that maternal approval would somehow translate into his affection.
I thought I could warm Adrian’s heart by being devoted. I’d believed that if I just tried hard enough, sacrificed deeply enough, loved thoroughly enough, he would eventually see me as more than Isabella’s replacement.
Instead, I’d been kidnapped on my wedding day while Adrian went to hold his real wedding with the woman he’d always loved. All of my efforts —the business knowledge, the cooking skills, the endless servitude to his family —had been cheap performances that moved no one but myself.
How foolish I had been.
Looking at Adrian now, with his familiar expression of coldness, I felt something break free inside my chest.
Not my heart that had shattered long ago in a warehouse while he dismissed my life as meaningless.
No, this was something else. The last chain that had bound me to the dream of earning his love.
I smiled, and for the first time in either of my lives, it was genuine.
“Yes, I can’t pretend anymore, Adrian. So let’s call off the engagement.”
Before Adrian could respond, his assistant rushed over, breathing hard and looking like he’d seen a ghost.
“Mr Whitmore, there’s been a situation—”
Adrian’s brow furrowed slightly as annoyance flickered across his face. “Control yourself, Thomas,” he cut him off with a tone filled with impatience. “What could be so urgent that you’re making a scene at my engagement party? Can’t you see I am busy?”
Thomas shot me a glance before he leaned closer, whispering urgently into Adrian’s ear. His voice was so low that I couldn’t catch what he was saying to Adrian, but I didn’t need to hear them to know what had happened. The timing was exactly as I remembered from my previous life, down to the minute.
Adrian’s indifferent demeanour changed instantly. The man who had shown absolutely no reaction when I mentioned calling off our engagement suddenly looked tense, his jaw tightening, and his eyes flashed with panic.
Isabella’s suicide attempt. Right on time.
Without so much as a glance in my direction, Adrian turned to leave, as if I had ceased to exist the moment more pressing concerns arose. In his mind, I was already dismissed, forgotten and replaced by thoughts of the woman who truly mattered to him.
But I refused to be invisible this time. Nor the same pathetic girl who would stand there watching him walk away.
“Adrian,” I called out, stepping forward to block his path. “I haven’t finished talking.”
He halted instantly, his cold eyes meeting mine with irritation as his gaze swept over me. “Step aside, Evelyn, I have urgent business to attend to,” he said curtly.
The dismissal was so casual and devoid of any acknowledgement that this was supposed to be our engagement party that I almost laughed. Instead, I stood my ground, meeting his gaze.
“You are going to see Isabella, aren’t you?”
His gaze hardened as he replied coldly. “What do you think? It’s your fault that Isabella is attempting to commit suicide because of you and your petty schemes, and you still have the nerve to ask? I’m warning you, Evelyn, I can give you the position of Mrs Whitmore, but don’t fantasise about anything else.”
The self-righteous statement was so absurd that I felt a bubble of hysterical laughter rise in my throat. I had never targeted Isabella. I’d never done anything to her except exist in Adrian’s world while bearing an unfortunate resemblance to her when styled correctly.
But somehow, in Adrian’s mind, my presence in his life was an attack on his true love.
As always, I was painted as the villain in their love story. The obstacle to overcome. The sacrifice to be made for their happiness. It didn’t matter what I did or didn’t do; I would always be blamed for standing between them.
Well, if I was going to be cast as the villain anyway, I might as well play the part properly.
“Today is our engagement party,” I said loudly, making sure my voice carried to the growing crowd. “If you leave now to go to Isabella, then consider our engagement void.”
The hall quietened instantly. Most of the guests began bringing out their phones to record the drama unfolding.
Adrian sneered, his eyes filling with scorn. “Are you threatening me with calling off the engagement?” He laughed dryly. “You think far too highly of yourself, Evelyn. If you don’t want the title of Mrs Whitmore, there are plenty of other women out there who will gladly take up the position.”
With that, he pushed past me without bothering to look back, leaving me standing there alone amid the curious gazes of our guests.
I watched him leave without feeling the crushing despair I’d expected. Instead, I felt... free. Lighter than I’d been in years, as if I’d finally set down a burden I’d been carrying for so long I’d forgotten what it felt like to stand up straight.
Adrian had made his choice, just as he had in my previous life. Isabella would always come first, would always be more important than any obligation or promise he’d made to me.
At least now, everyone would see it happen in real time instead of having to piece together the truth from whispered rumours.
Straightening my posture, I walked confidently to the centre of the banquet hall, my wet dress trailing behind me as I positioned myself where everyone could see me. The whispers were growing now.
I clapped my hands. “May I have everyone’s attention, please?”
The murmurings ceased instantly as all eyes turned to me.
I took a deep breath, feeling my heartbeat quicken with excitement. This moment would mark my rebirth, my liberation from a life bound by others’ expectations and manipulations.
“Everyone, please listen carefully, Adrian Whitmore has chosen to call off our engagement tonight for Isabella Clarke.”
Gasps filled the air as the whisperings erupted again.
At the banquet hall entrance, I noticed that Adrian had stopped. He turned back slowly, his face dark with anger as he realised what I was about to do.
Perfect. I wanted him to hear this.
I looked directly into his furious grey eyes, raised my chin with defiance, with a slight smile curving my lips and announced in a voice that carried to every corner of the ballroom:
“I, Evelyn Bennet, will willingly fulfil their wishes. From this moment forward, any engagement or relationship between me and Adrian Whitmore is completely and permanently dissolved.”
Evelyn POVI shifted my hips beneath him, a small, rolling motion, and the friction made us both gasp. He opened his eyes and looked down at me, and whatever he saw in my face set him free.He pulled back slowly, nearly all the way out, and then drove forward in one deep, fluid stroke that made me cry out and grab the arm of the love seat above my head. He did it again, establishing a rhythm that was unhurried but powerful, each thrust reaching deep enough to make me feel it in my entire body.I wrapped my legs around his waist, locking my ankles against the small of his back, and pulled him into me with every forward stroke. The angle changed, and he hit a spot inside me that sent shockwaves through my core, and I moaned against his mouth, my fingers scraping across his back, leaving red trails on his skin that I could feel rising under my nails. He responded by driving harder. The love seat creaked beneath us. His hand found my thigh and pushed it higher, opening me wider, and the n
Evelyn POVThe sudden absence made me gasp, my hips lifting as I reached for contact that was no longer there. But before I could protest, his mouth was moving down my body. Not slowly this time. With purpose. His lips crossed my ribs, my stomach, the hollow of my hip bone, and then lower, his breath hot against the inside of my thigh. He settled between my legs, his hands pressing my thighs apart, and looked up at me. One last check. One last question in his eyes."Please," I whispered. It was the only word I had left. His mouth found me.The first stroke of his tongue was slow, a long, flat pressure that dragged through my folds from bottom to top, and the sensation ripped through me so sharply that my hand shot down and grabbed a fistful of his hair. He groaned against me and the vibration made my hips buck, but his hands held me steady, pinning my thighs open as he repeated the stroke. Again. And again. Each pass unhurried, tho
Evelyn POVThe night air hit me, and I gasped, the contrast sharp and sweet, cool air against overheated flesh. My nipples hardened instantly, and I felt myself fully exposed, bare from the waist up under the open sky, but the vulnerability didn't make me want to cover myself. It made me want him to look. And he was looking. His eyes moved over me with a slowness that felt like a touch, tracing the lines of my collarbones, the swell of my breasts, the peaks that had tightened in the cool air. He took me in as though he were committing every detail to a memory he never wanted to lose."You're beautiful," he said. His voice had gone hoarse, cracked at the edges. "Evelyn, you're so beautiful it hurts to look at you."He raised his hand. It hovered between us, close enough that I could feel the heat of his palm against my skin without contact."Can I touch you?" he asked.I nodded. His hand made contact with my lef
Evelyn POV"Is it just me, or is it suddenly very warm up here?"Adrian looked at me, and I noticed a sheen of perspiration along his hairline that hadn't been there five minutes ago. He tugged at the collar of his T-shirt and exhaled slowly."It's not just you," he said. "I feel it too."He leaned forward and fanned me with his hand, but the warmth was coming from inside, not outside. It spread from my chest outward through my limbs with a rhythm that matched my pulse, settling into my skin as though my body had decided to generate its own heat. The night air was cool against my bare arms and the damp ends of my hair, but underneath that coolness, something was burning.I shifted on the love seat. My clothes felt like thorns on my skin. Every thread of my t-shirt registered against my skin as though my nerve endings had been amplified. The cotton brushed across my collarbone, and I shivered, which made no sense because I was overh
Evelyn POV"And I believed her. Not because the evidence supported it, but because believing her was simpler than admitting that I was afraid. If you were scheming, I didn't have to feel guilty for treating you badly. If you were performing, I didn't have to acknowledge that my coldness was hurting a real person. Isabella gave me a story that let me off the hook, and I held onto that story because letting go of it meant looking at myself honestly, and I wasn't ready to do that."His thumb moved slowly across my knuckles."But I can't lay all of it on Isabella. That would be too easy, and you deserve better than easy answers. The truth is, the signs were there—every sign. You cooked meals I never tasted. You helped with company reports I never thanked you for. You took care of my mother with a devotion that had nothing to do with strategy and everything to do with who you are as a person. And I ignored all of it because I was comfortable in
Evelyn POVWe sat in silence for a while, looking at the stars. The sky was vast and dark and indifferent in the way that only the sky can be, and something was soothing about that indifference. Up there, nobody cared about Green Valley, investor withdrawals, fake portfolio managers, or golf club parking fines. Up there, it was just light, distance, and time."Tonight," I said, turning to Adrian, "I'm going to pretend that in another universe, we're lovers. No history, no baggage, no complicated past. Just two people sharing wine on a rooftop." I held his gaze. "Open the bottle."An appreciative glint moved through his eyes, and he nodded slowly before he reached for the corkscrew and opened the Château Rosaire with the flick of his wrist. The cork came out with a soft pop, and the scent of the wine drifted upward immediately, dark and rich and layered, blackberries and woodsmoke and something floral underneath, like roses pressed b
Isabella POVI sighed in relish as the masseuse found a stress point and slathered oil on it, then gently rubbed his hands.I could feel all my stress evaporating from his touch.“You’re so good, Dave!” I murmured, sinking further into the softness of the bed. After weeks of planning, I deserved th
Evelyn POVI walked into my office like a ghost, moving without purpose or direction. I didn’t really know how my feet were moving. The hallway felt longer than usual. It was quieter, every sound was muted, as if the building itself had decided to hold its breath. When I reached my office, I didn’t
Evelyn POVTwo weeks later. Two weeks of lying in my bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to convince myself that everything would somehow work out. Two weeks of ignoring Vincent's calls, his texts, his attempts to see me. Two weeks of pretending that the world hadn't shifted on its axis and left me
Evelyn POVI went back into my office and sat down again, feeling more miserable than I had moments before.I'd lost my company.
