Chapter 4

Author: Bowl of Rice
I was knocked right out of my wheelchair and onto the floor. Sprawled helplessly on the ground, I could only look up as Vanessa screamed at me in a blind rage.

“I know you hate me! I know you resent me for stealing your childhood friend, your brother, and even the man you loved! But the baby is innocent! How old is he? How could he possibly survive a fall like that? How could you be so heartless? How could you do this to him!”

Attracted by the commotion, Ethan, Hudson, and Logan came rushing into the room from different directions.

Ethan’s expression turned livid. He took a massive stride forward, instantly dropping to his knees to quickly inspect Sonny’s condition. Then, he snapped his head up, his eyes burning with pure hatred as he glared at me.

“Eva York, what the hell did you do!” Ethan roared. “You just got back, and you’re already misbehaving? Do you want me to send you right back to where you came from?”

Logan rushed over next. He looked at his nephew crying hysterically on the floor, listened to Vanessa’s sobbing accusations, and then turned his gaze upon me, his eyes filled with disgust.

“Eva, how could you lay your hands on such a small child?” Logan snapped.

Meanwhile, Hudson handed the baby over to the medical staff waiting behind him. He didn’t say a single word, but his cold, ferocious eyes never left me.

It felt like… I was being falsely accused all over again. It was no different from the countless times I had been framed over the past three years. Back then, when the matron accused me of stealing, my denials only earned me a harsher whipping. When a servant girl claimed I was seducing the stable hands, my explanations resulted in being stripped and publicly humiliated. When Ethan believed a rumor that I was trying to escape, a water dungeon was the reward for my defense.

I wanted to explain myself, to say it wasn’t true and that I didn’t do it. There was a lot I wanted to say, but in the end, I chose to keep quiet because nobody would believe me anyway. Just like countless times in the past, defending myself would only invite deeper malice and harsher punishment.

So, I curled up into a ball on the floor and whispered weakly, “I’m sorry…”

Vanessa suddenly lunged at me.

“Sorry? A simple 'sorry' is going to fix this? I’ll beat you to death, you bitch!”

Her fists and boots rained down on me, while the three men simply stood by and watched in silence.

At some point, someone casually remarked, “Don’t hit her belly. She’s pregnant.”

However, that was it. Nobody moved to stop her. They just stood on the sidelines, completely indifferent, exactly like they used to be.

As her fists and boots continued to rain down on my body and face, all I felt was pain. The pain was so intense it felt as if my flesh was exploding.

As my consciousness began to drift, I noticed the floating numbers in front of my eyes rapidly decreasing.

[Countdown: 24 hours, 27 minutes, 43 seconds.]

[Countdown: 20 hours, 13 minutes, 5 seconds.]

[Countdown: 15 hours, 39 minutes, 17 seconds.]

Finally, someone pulled Vanessa back, and she stopped. The timer froze at “4 hours, 1 minute, 25 seconds.”

Ethan slowly walked over, looking down at me from his towering height.

“Do you know what you did wrong now?” he asked. “Why can’t you ever learn to be obedient?”

I coughed twice, choking on the metallic taste of blood pooling in my throat. Instead of answering his question, I reached out and tugged at the hem of Ethan’s pants, asking him one last thing.

“Didn’t you say… nobody would ever hurt me again here?”

Ethan went dead silent. He pulled his leg away coldly, wrenching his trousers out of my weak grasp.

“But you made a mistake,” he said. “And when you make a mistake, you must be punished. Those are the rules. Lock her in the utility room. Once the doctors confirm the baby is perfectly fine, I’ll let her out.”

However, I didn’t want to be locked away anymore. I had been imprisoned for three long years, and I refused to spend the final four hours of my life being penned up like cattle.

Just as I wanted to plead with Ethan again, he turned his back on me. So, I shifted my gaze to Logan. Yet, he immediately averted his eyes, focusing instead on softly comforting the deeply shaken Vanessa. Hudson, on the other hand, had hurried out of the room to check on the baby. As expected, no one was willing to save me, and so I stopped struggling. I let the servants drag my limp body across the floor and brutally dump me onto the ground of the utility room.

Counting my own fading heartbeats, I watched the clock tick away, second by second. I had no idea what would happen once everything hit zero, but for the current me, the absolute worst-case scenario was merely death, and death would be a beautiful release.

[Countdown: 0 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds.]

When the numbers finally hit zero, I closed my eyes, and my heartbeat stopped. Beneath my body, a massive pool of dark red blood silently began to spread across the floor.

A servant came in to deliver food half an hour later, and a moment later, a bloodcurdling shriek pierced through the entire manor house.

The servant practically crawled and scrambled out of the room, rushing frantically toward Ethan while screaming at the top of her lungs, “Ah! She’s dead! Miss Eva is dead! There’s blood everywhere!”

Hudson’s death, by contrast, was far quieter and far more unnerving. He died by his own hand. Dressed in a pristine surgical gown, Hudson performed an autopsy on himself. Scattered beside him were handwritten notes and sketched diagrams. The handwriting was as neat and clear as always, but the contents were so outlandish that they would make anyone’s blood run cold.Over and over again, he had calculated formulas on the pages. “The theoretical possibility of autologous blood recovery and reperfusion following an extremely prolonged cardiac arrest.”There was also a line of text written with such fierce force that the pen had nearly ripped through the paper:“I can definitely bring her back to life. She wasn’t supposed to die.”The forensic pathologists and the police concluded that it was a paranoid suicide committed under extreme psychological stress. Hudson had turned himself into his very last experimental subject. He was trapped in the delusion that I was still alive, and he

Vanessa’s screams were piercing. One of the matrons cursed under her breath, “Shut the hell up! You’re driving me crazy!”Before Vanessa could react, the matron whipped out a wad of filthy, foul-smelling rags and mercilessly shoved it straight into Vanessa’s wide-open, screaming mouth.“Mmph–”Vanessa’s voice was instantly cut off. The rancid stench of the rag shot straight up her nose, making her vision go dark as her stomach churned. However, the nightmare was far from over. After gagging her, the two matrons exchanged a look. Then, their fists and boots rained down upon Vanessa like a relentless storm. From that day forward, the person “Vanessa York” vanished from high society. In her place, in that old, isolated manor on the island, there was only a crazy, blind, and crippled woman whose sole purpose was to scrub the manor’s chamber pots and filthy toilets. No one really knew how she went blind. Perhaps she had accidentally struck the sharp corner of a table during her franti

Heavy, rushed footsteps echoed from outside the courtyard. Two fierce-looking matrons barged straight into the small yard. They knew exactly what they were there for. They moved straight toward Vanessa, grabbed her arms, and began dragging her away.Vanessa was taken aback at first, but like a drowning man clutching at straws, she roared at the two women. “Hey! What are you two doing here? Aren’t you the ones I hired back then to teach that bitch Eva a lesson? Who are you to treat me like this! Let go of me right now! Believe me when I say I’ll have my husband, Ethan Miller, skin you alive! And why the hell am I even in this awful place? Speak up! Is this your doing?”She cursed loudly, kicking and struggling with all her might, trying desperately to break free from their grip. However, the two women ignored her furious rants and accusations. Their dull eyes showed nothing but impatience. They tightened their grip even more and barked back harshly, “Shut up! Quit making such a ra

Hudson lifted the white sheet, exposing a withered arm. On it, besides the crisscrossing scars from old self-harm, a multitude of fresh marks was glaringly visible. Those were scratch marks left by fingernails, a bright red-purple color, and most were still oozing blood.Ethan’s breath hitched as his chaotic mind raced backward through his memories. Those wounds… That day in the kitchen, he had seen my arm. Back then, although the old scars looked horrific, there were absolutely no scratches or pinch marks!Just as Ethan pondered on it, Hudson spoke up, “We compared the tissue residue found under Sonny’s fingernails with the skin fragments I extracted from the edges of these fresh wounds on Eva’s arm for a laboratory analysis. The DNA is a perfect match. These scratches and pinch marks were made by Sonny.”Ethan’s face turned deathly pale in an instant.Hudson continued to add, “After the incident with Eva, one of the doctors under my supervision grew terrified and came forward to

“How could you suddenly just… die? You were perfectly fine just a moment ago! Huh? Speak to me! Open your eyes and look at me! I am your brother, Logan. Eva, please talk to me.”He shook my shoulders frantically. However, no matter how desperately he called out, the corpse lying on the floor offered no response. Only my hair swayed slightly with his movements, making my lifeless face look even more grim. He fell to his knees beside me, his shoulders shaking violently as he let out broken, sobbing whimpers.Meanwhile, Ethan stood quietly at the doorway. He had arrived a little later than Hudson and Logan, coming in just in time to hear Mr. Brown mention the need for an autopsy, alongside Logan’s panicked wails. Ethan’s feet stopped right at the door of the utility room, lingering at the edge of the darkness that reeked of blood. He did not take a step inside; not even one. It was as if, by refusing to enter, Ethan could maintain the illusion that I was still alive and pretend that we

Ethan heard a deafening ringing echo in his ears, as if an explosion had gone off in his mind. Before he could even process what was happening, Logan had dashed forward. He slammed his shoulder violently against the wooden door of the utility room, forcing it open. The moment the door gave way, a thick stench of blood wafted out from the dimly lit room. Logan’s legs buckled, and he collapsed to his knees. His eyes widened in horror as he stared straight at the figure lying deep inside the utility room. It looked so small, lying in the center of a pool of blood, like a dead butterfly.“Eva…”A broken, breathless gasp escaped Logan’s throat. Stumbling and desperate, he crawled over on his hands and knees. By the time he got close, his palms were covered in my cold, sticky blood.Rushing in right behind Logan was Hudson. He didn’t even have time for grief. Charging straight toward my corpse in a daze, he fell to his knees into the pool of blood. With trembling hands, he ripped open th
