Chapter 3

Author: Triple Threat
Just then, a woman’s voice cut in from the background.

“Jordan, can you check if my diamond ring is loose?”

Tilting his head over, Jordan replied, “Be right there.”

He shifted his attention back to me.

“Eve, is there anything else? If not, I’m hanging up.”

With downcast eyes, I stared at the man on the screen and asked the burning question, “Jordan, do you honestly want to marry me?”

Taken aback at first, Jordan proceeded to chuckle.

“Of course. We’ve been together for seven years.

“How many seven years does one get in a lifetime? I definitely want to marry you.”

I nodded.

My finger hovered over the group chat with Jordan’s family.

Three minutes ago, I typed, “By mutual agreement, our upcoming wedding in two days is officially called off.”

At the time, I wanted to save him from embarrassment.

Now, I deleted the sentence one word at a time.

“Got it.”

The next day, I shipped my bags back home.

A call from Jordan’s mother, Cece, came in.

“Eve, come to the house for lunch today. Jordan is back.”

After a pause, she added cheerfully, “He brought a friend with him. Her name is Molly Powell. It’s a great chance to introduce you two.”

Cece was very nice.

When Jordan introduced me to his family, Cece offered me a drink with a bright smile.

She complimented me on my looks and asked about my education, my family circumstances, and how good I was with household chores.

I responded to every question, my nerves more on edge than when I defended my thesis.

It was my wish to be the daughter-in-law Cece approved of.

Cece seemed thrilled, claiming that the family was lucky that Jordan found a girlfriend like me.

She turned around and called Jordan to the kitchen to help with refreshments.

I caught Cece sighing, her voice full of regret as she told Jordan, “It’s such a shame. Your ex was way better.”

Jordan’s last ex was Molly.

I knew even without Jordan telling me.

Since then, that name had lived rent-free in my head every time I dropped by Cece’s home.

Today was the day I’d meet Molly.

By the time I arrived, the living room sofa was packed.

Molly sat in the middle, with Jordan glued to her side. He was peeling a piece of grapefruit for her.

Never in those seven years did Jordan demonstrate such commitment.

As I stepped inside, Cece jolted to her feet.

“There you are, Eve.”

She pulled me closer and pointed at Molly.

“They used to go to school together. Molly is one fine lady. The moment she learned that Jordan was getting married, she came all the way just to attend the wedding.

“Molly, this is Eve.”

The double standard was evident even in the introduction.

Not calling Cece out, I simply looked for a spot to sit down.

Cece went on talking with Molly.

“Molly, did you take pictures of your wedding in Slandsdeca?

“Honestly, you should have told me about the wedding sooner.”

Molly smiled embarrassedly.

“Mrs. Harding—”

“Well, aren’t you formal?” Cece said cheerfully.

“Mom!” Jordan cried out of nowhere, his gaze darting toward me.

“Eve’s here.”

The tension in the air was palpable.

With reality catching up to her, Cece uttered sheepishly, “Oh, look at me, talking without thinking. I just adore Molly so much. She’s like a daughter to me.

“Here, Eve. Enjoy the wedding favor.”

She slid the box of chocolates toward me.

Cece even grabbed a handful of candy and stuffed it into my palm.

I unwrapped one and popped it into my mouth, only to be hit with the most bitter taste imaginable.

“Thank you, Mrs. Harding.”

I didn’t address her intimately.

She didn’t deserve it.

The fact that Cece was kept in the loop about Jordan and Molly’s wedding threw me off.

Still, I didn’t kick up a fuss.

It was pointless.

I bided my time, waiting for tomorrow to catch the looks on their faces when they learned that the wedding was off.

After lunch, I got up and went home.

Dean was more invested in the wedding prep than I was. He was right there with me, picking out the flower arrangement. Dean came along to my wedding dress fittings. He went through the guest list and checked it more than twice. Dean even took the time to ask earnestly whether I fancied the font for our save-the-date. I made fun of him for being so meticulous. Dean said, “A wedding is more than a ceremony. “It’s my way of showing everyone how much I cherish you.” It was a beautiful sunny day on our wedding day. I stood at the altar in my wedding dress. Sitting along the aisle, Kendra bawled her eyes out. While wiping her tears, she mouthed to me. “You’re worth it.” I nodded with a smile. The wedding officiant asked Dean, “Do you take Eve Sawyer to be lawfully wedded wife?” Dean looked into my eyes, his gaze tender. “I do. “Through good times and bad, in sickness and in health, I choose to honor her, shield her, and support her.“Not to make her life re

The assignment took me by surprise. “I just started today.” “So?” Dean met my gaze, his voice tender but firm. “Competence doesn’t wait in line for seniority.” It was at that very moment that I felt a lump in my throat. So this was what it felt like to be respected. It wasn’t a dismissive brush-off. Nor was it being relegated to the sink to do the dishes. It certainly wasn’t being told off after voicing my concerns. Instead, it was having someone see me for who I was, what I was made of, and my choices.I was a whole person. … Time flew by. I had reached the point where thinking of Jordan no longer hurt.Every now and then, I could hear updates about him from our mutual friends. Jordan had a massive falling out with Molly. He paid for most of the wedding in Slandsdeca. The diamond ring, the wedding dress, the venue, the flight, and the hotel cost close to a million bucks. After the whole scandal, Jordan asked for the ring back. Molly refused to giv

I stopped updating my social media. The evidence spoke for itself. The ultimate revenge wasn’t screaming in tears. All it took was to present the facts for the world to see. Jordan issued an apology shortly after. His post was long. Jordan admitted to being silly, selfish, and weak. He felt that he had failed me after everything I had done for him in the last seven years.Jordan claimed that the wedding in Slandsdeca was the biggest mistake he had ever made. He said I was never the one at fault. He was the one who threw everything we had away. Nobody was buying his story. “The law wouldn’t exist if an apology could fix things.” “You’re not sorry because you were wrong. You’re sorry because you got caught.” “Keep OP’s name out of your name and leave her alone.” “Too little too late.” Molly still refused to admit any fault. She started turning on the waterworks on a livestream. With her eyes welling up, Molly insisted that she was no side piece and that h

“How many seven years do you get in a lifetime?” I looked at Jordan. That was a question I used to ask myself more than I could count. It was hard to walk away from seven years of history. I was willing to put up just a little more for the sake of the seven years. Because of those years together, I trusted that Jordan would change. Now, I was able to snap out of it. Those seven years shouldn't be the reason I keep letting myself get hurt.At least I managed to cut my losses after seven years. “Jordan. “You only get so many seven-year chapters in a lifetime.“I’m done spending another seven years on you.” His complexion turned ashen. I brushed past him. Out of nowhere, Jordan hugged me from behind, his voice choked with sobs. “Don’t go. “Don’t abandon me, Eve.“I can end things with Molly. “I can move out. “You can hit or yell at me. “I just want you to come back.” I peeled his fingers off me, one by one. It felt as though I was breaking the sha

“We can still sign the papers and live our lives as a married couple. “I’ll make it up to you.” I looked at Jordan, finding the whole thing ridiculous. “Jordan, do you honestly think that my concern is whether we’d get married?” He was stunned. “Isn’t it?” I chuckled. “Of course not.” I pulled my phone out of my pocket and tapped open the spreadsheet. “Here are a few questions for you.” Jordan stared at the mobile screen, color draining from his face. I said, “I stayed up all night waiting for you on my twenty-fifth birthday. “According to you, you had to work late out of the blue. “Where were you really?” Jordan’s lips quivered. “I—” “Be honest.” Jordan kept his head down. “I was at the movies with Molly.” “Why?”She had a rough day.” I nodded and checked off the entry on my spreadsheet. “You gave me a bracelet for our seventh anniversary together. “I later found out that Molly had the same piece. “What was going through your mind back th

“Eve returned the ring to me. “She’s abandoned me.” The video call cut off there. Kendra sent me a text. “That was so satisfying. “But, Eve, are you honestly not going to clear the air with him?” I stared at my phone for a while before replying, “I don’t see the point.” It wasn’t as if I had nothing left to say about our seven-year relationship. All the words that needed to be said had been worn away by repeated disappointment.Jordan wouldn’t listen. In that case, I had nothing more to say. … On the day the wedding was called off, I slept for ten straight hours. By the time I woke up, the sunlight hit the edge of my bed. Sitting right next to me, my mother peeled an apple for me. She didn’t ask why I was back out of the blue. There were no questions about why the wedding was canceled. She simply sliced the apple into small pieces and handed the plate to me. “Have something sweet.” Feeling a lump in my throat, I nearly burst into tears. For so lon
