Chapter 2

Author: Small Sept
I looked at the 29 dead sheep lying on the ground. Their bellies were swollen. Each wore a specially designed yellow microchip ear tag.

My gaze turned cold. "Ordinary? A few dozen bucks a pound?"

I took a deep breath and suppressed my anger before saying, "Ms. Shaw, you'd better pray that you can afford this.

"The sheep you killed were purebred Suffon breeding sheep from a national-level alpine pasture genetic resource bank. More importantly, all 29 of them were ewes, and every single one had been carrying two fully formed lambs!

"One dead ewe equates to three lives lost, so 29 of them means a total of 87 lives. Even with the most conservative estimate, the market value of this entire group would be at least ten million dollars."

After hearing that astronomical figure, Cecilia froze up for a brief moment. Then she covered her mouth, exchanged a glance with Keith, and burst into a fit of piercing laughter.

"Ten million dollars? Hahaha! What is this, some kind of TV show?" Cecilia laughed so hard she leaned backward. Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.

"A genetic resource bank? Why don't you just say you're an academician from the National Academy of Science?

"Have you gone delusional from living in this godforsaken, backwater town for so long? It's just some filthy livestock, and you immediately try to scam ten million dollars out of me?" she jeered.

Keith was laughing so hard he couldn't even stand straight. He slapped his thigh and chimed in mockingly, "So, country folks can just make up anything now?

"And what? One sheep equals three lives? Why don't you just say these are divine sheep raised by God himself?

"Ms. Shaw, this guy must've read too many fantasy novels. And now he's come down to the mortal world to beg for handouts. The nonsense he's making up is so ridiculous that even the six-million-dollar G-Wagon couldn't drag him back to reality.

"This poor beggar dreamed about money so much that he's lost his mind."

Cecilia rolled her eyes and sneered. "Your professional vocabulary is pretty impressive. You graduated top of your class from a scammer training course, didn't you?"

Just then, a few stray drivers, who were stuck behind Cecilia because of the accident, exited their vehicles. One of them, a middle-aged man wearing glasses, walked closer and examined the yellow chip attached to the sheep's ear.

Suddenly, he sucked in a sharp breath. "Ah…"

The man, whose name was Timothy Creed, straightened up. His face was filled with disbelief. "This guy isn't lying. The yellow identification tag with a built-in micro-sensing band… Could this really be the core breeding group approved by the Northwest Agricultural Research Academy?"

He carefully inspected the sheep's body again, pressing lightly on its swollen belly. His expression grew increasingly solemn as he did so.

Finally, he adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, then turned around and began explaining to the surrounding onlookers.

"I was involved in the risk assessment for a transgenic breeding laboratory project before. These things survive entirely on high-precision breeding solutions and specially calibrated nutritional supplements. Every single breeding solution and supplement costs an absolute fortune!

"The breeding process is extremely complicated too. The amount of money invested is astronomical.

"Ten million is nothing. If this batch of pregnant ewes went onto the black market, people would fight over them for 20 million dollars!"

As soon as those words fell, the surrounding crowd erupted in an uproar, and the way they looked at Cecilia changed.

Cecilia stiffened up. Then, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, she shrieked, "Alright! Keep up the act!

"You damn hick, you actually prepared this whole act in advance, huh? You even arranged actors to hide here in advance! You all teamed up to con me from the beginning!"

She was burning with humiliation and rage. "Fine! So you want to be a bully? I'll show you what it really means to have both sides of the law in your pocket!"

With that, she pulled out her phone, dialed a number, and turned on the speakerphone.

William's lips parted in a frantic quiver. He managed to choke out two broken whimpers before his eyes rolled back and he collapsed on the ground, completely still.Over in the corner, Cecilia, who had been curled into a ball this entire time, finally reacted. She stared at her unconscious father, then turned her head to look at me."Ms. Shaw, before I came here, I made it a point to look through the penal code," I said, gazing down at her. "Inciting a public disturbance, colluding with gangs to endanger public safety, plus a 15-million-dollar extortion attempt…"Cecilia's teeth chattered nonstop. She scrambled further back into the corner, pressing herself flat against the wall."Stack those charges together, and you're looking at ten years minimum," I remarked, doing the math for her."Once you're inside… You know, the sheep pens at the prison's farm just happen to be short-handed. Shoveling manure for a few years should teach you your place."Cecilia completely broke down at t

Cecilia could still picture the brutal scene of Bennett being dragged away just moments ago. As stupid as she was, she now understood she had caused a catastrophic disaster. She racked her brain, but she simply couldn't understand how a shepherd in a faded windbreaker could bring a ruthless crime lord and her own father to their knees with just a few words.I turned my head and instructed, "Mr. Shaw, educate your daughter. Tell her whose scraps your family's grocery empire has been surviving off of."William scrambled over on all fours. He then grabbed a fistful of Cecilia's hair and dragged her out of the corner."You wretched jinx! I'm going to kill you!" he yelled, shaking his fists violently. With tears and snot smeared all over his face, William pointed at me and roared at Cecilia, "Our family's cold-chain distribution, our top-ten national warehouses, and 80% of the premium inventory on the market—it all belongs to Kredo Consortium! That was a business opportunity they gave

Feeling reassured by his connections, Bennett seemed to regain some of his confidence.I paid no attention to the Shaws and turned to look at Bennett. "A well-connected local, huh?"I fished out my phone. The screen had been shattered, but I could still make calls at least.I dialed a number, and after just one ring, the call was answered."What's the name of the guy who runs this area's gravel business?" I asked, tilting my head slightly. "Quinton Jones, right?"After a short pause, I spoke directly into the phone. "Shut down every single one of his projects. Right now!"Bennett had been a little uneasy at first, but after hearing what I said, he burst out laughing."Dude, did watching too many movies turn you stupid? You seriously think you can ruin Quinton with just one phone call?"Bennett raised his cuffed wrists and shook them, making the iron chains clink. "Quinton has connections all the way up to the FBI. You'll never be able to reach his level in your life—"Just the

All of a sudden, hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the hallway. In just two hours, William had pulled every string he could and even chartered a private jet to rush over. He stumbled into the lobby of the police station looking disheveled—his suit was buttoned crookedly, and one of his shoes was missing. He looked like he had just been fished out of the water. Two female officers were escorting Cecilia out of the interrogation room and toward the holding cells. The moment Cecilia saw William, her arrogant attitude instantly gave way to a look of grievance. She wailed loudly and rushed toward him."Dad! You're finally here!"She cried so hard that she could barely catch her breath. The handcuffs on her wrists clinked as she pointed toward the couch in the hallway, half-hidden in the shadows due to one of the motion-sensor lights going out."It's that broke shepherd! He bought off these cops and set me up! Dad, get someone to cripple him! I'll never get over this humiliati

William's hoarse roar was cut off abruptly, for the video call was forcibly disconnected.Only the sound of the wind sweeping through the wide-open highway could be heard. The bystanders looked at each other in confusion, and even Bennett's men loosened their hold on me without realizing it.Cecilia clutched her phone, staring blankly at the dark screen.Bennett ducked his chin into his collar and turned to ask her, "Ms. Cecilia, what's going on with Mr. Shaw? Why'd he tell us to let him go?"Cecilia rolled her eyes, then raised her chin smugly again. "Dad was just confused because he was angry! He couldn't see clearly through the screen and thought you were beating my friend."Didn't you hear him say he's chartering a flight here? He must be bringing over elite bodyguards from Eastport to personally teach this filthy beggar a lesson!"Keith immediately chimed in from the side, "Don't worry, Bennett. Mr. Shaw is extremely protective of his own."Since someone dared to mess with

Amid the crowd's horrified cries, the van slammed on the brakes, coming to a stop inches from my legs."You've got guts! Break one of his legs. Teach him how things work around here," Bennett said.Under his command, his men closed in around me. With no time even to react, a steel pipe crashed into my back.A dull thud rang out, and I staggered forward. But before I could steady myself, several burly men lunged toward me and pinned me down hard against the rough asphalt. The coarse gravel scraped my cheek open, causing blood to trickle down my chin and drip onto the ground."Go ahead and call the cops! Weren't you acting like a big shot just now?" Bennett mocked. He walked over and stomped on the satellite phone I had dropped, shattering it to pieces.Cecilia stepped forward, crouched down in front of me, and patted my cheek. She laughed so hard that her shoulders shook."What happened to your tough act from a minute ago? What about the ten million dollars? Go on, keep talking!
