The Charity Gala

last update publish date: 2026-06-14 20:21:17

The invitation arrived on a Monday morning.

Not that Valeria had any say in the matter.

Rebecca informed her about it during breakfast with the same tone someone might use to announce the weather.

"The Sterling Foundation Gala is this Friday."

Valeria looked up from her coffee.

"The what?"

"The Sterling Foundation Gala."

Rebecca turned a page in her folder.

"Hundreds of guests. Business leaders, investors, politicians, donors, media representatives."

Valeria slowly lowered her cup.

"That sounds terrible."

Across the table, Julius didn't look up from the financial report he was reading.

"It isn't."

"It absolutely is."

"It lasts four hours."

"You're not helping."

For the first time that morning, the corner of Julius's mouth moved.

Not quite a smile.

But close.

Valeria immediately pointed at him.

"See? That expression right there."

"What expression?"

"The one where you're secretly enjoying my suffering."

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Rebecca continued reading from her schedule as though neither of them existed.

"The event is black tie."

Valeria groaned.

Julius finally looked up.

"You'll be fine."

She narrowed her eyes.

The confidence annoyed her.

Mostly because he sounded sincere.

By Friday evening, Valeria was convinced she would not be fine.

The dress alone felt intimidating.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Far more expensive than anything she would have ever purchased for herself.

She stood in front of a mirror while a stylist adjusted the final details.

The woman stepped back.

"There."

Valeria stared at her reflection.

For a moment, she barely recognized herself.

The woman in the mirror looked confident.

Sophisticated.

Comfortable in luxury.

The illusion lasted about three seconds.

Then anxiety returned.

A knock sounded at the door.

The stylist smiled.

"That's probably Mr. Sterling."

Valeria's stomach immediately tightened.

Great.

Time to embarrass herself publicly.

Julius was waiting at the bottom of the staircase.

He looked exactly how a billionaire attending a charity gala should look.

Tailored tuxedo.

Perfect posture.

Effortlessly composed.

The irritating thing was that he didn't appear to be trying.

Valeria descended slowly.

His gaze lifted.

For a brief moment, he simply looked at her.

Something unreadable crossed his face.

Gone almost immediately.

Still, she noticed.

Interesting.

"You're staring."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Julius blinked.

Then recovered.

"You look nice."

Valeria smiled slightly.

"That sounded painful."

"It wasn't."

"You're getting better at compliments."

"Let's not exaggerate."

She laughed.

The sound eased some of her nerves.

Only some.

Because the moment they stepped outside and approached the waiting vehicle, reality returned.

Tonight wasn't just another event.

Tonight mattered.

The Sterling Foundation Gala occupied an entire ballroom inside one of the city's most prestigious hotels.

Everything glittered.

Crystal chandeliers.

Polished marble.

Expensive jewelry.

The kind of wealth that didn't need to announce itself because everyone already knew it was there.

Valeria felt out of place immediately.

People moved through the room with practiced ease.

They knew where to stand.

How to speak.

Who to approach.

Meanwhile, she was concentrating very hard on not tripping.

The moment they entered, cameras began flashing.

Reporters called out questions.

Guests turned to look.

The attention felt overwhelming.

Instinctively, Valeria slowed.

Julius noticed.

Without saying anything, he moved slightly closer.

Not enough to attract attention.

Just enough to be reassuring.

The gesture surprised her.

Even more surprising was how much it helped.

Together, they entered the ballroom.

The evening began.

The first hour was manageable.

Not pleasant.

Manageable.

Valeria smiled.

Introduced herself.

Endured conversations about investment portfolios she didn't understand.

Listened to people discuss private islands as though they were ordinary purchases.

At one point, a woman spent fifteen minutes describing her third vacation home.

Valeria nearly asked if the first two were feeling neglected.

Fortunately, she maintained enough self-control not to.

Mostly.

The real challenge arrived later.

A group of influential donors approached during dinner.

Several were older.

Powerful.

Accustomed to commanding attention.

The conversation initially focused on the foundation's charitable work.

Then it shifted toward the merger.

Then toward Julius.

Which inevitably meant it shifted toward her.

A silver-haired businessman smiled politely.

The smile never reached his eyes.

"And how are you adjusting to your new life, Mrs. Sterling?"

Valeria returned the smile.

"So far, nobody has thrown me out."

A few guests laughed.

The businessman didn't.

Interesting.

"Quite the transition."

His tone remained pleasant.

Technically.

"From café work to Sterling Manor."

There it was.

The subtle edge beneath the words.

Valeria recognized it immediately.

She'd encountered versions of it her entire life.

People who disguised judgment as curiosity.

She maintained her composure.

"It has certainly been different."

The man nodded.

As though confirming something.

"What an extraordinary opportunity."

The phrasing irritated her.

Opportunity.

Not marriage.

Not relationship.

Opportunity.

Before she could respond, Julius spoke.

"Valeria has handled the transition exceptionally well."

The businessman smiled.

"Of course."

Yet something in his expression suggested disbelief.

The conversation moved on.

But the discomfort lingered.

An hour later, the event became more crowded.

More chaotic.

Valeria escaped briefly onto a balcony overlooking the city.

The cool night air felt wonderful.

For the first time all evening, she could breathe.

The skyline stretched before her.

Thousands of lights.

Thousands of lives.

Most completely unaware of the strange performance happening inside the ballroom.

"You disappeared."

Julius's voice interrupted her thoughts.

She glanced over.

He stepped onto the balcony.

Two glasses in hand.

One he offered her.

Valeria accepted.

"Thank you."

Silence settled comfortably between them.

A rare occurrence.

Eventually, she spoke.

"I think your rich friends are trying to interrogate me."

"They interrogate everyone."

"That isn't reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

She laughed softly.

The city lights reflected in the glass she held.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then Julius surprised her.

"You handled yourself well."

Valeria looked at him.

Suspicious.

"Was that another compliment?"

"Possibly."

"Should I document it?"

His expression remained serious.

"That seems unnecessary."

The response made her laugh harder.

Julius watched her.

The tension she'd been carrying all evening eased slightly.

The strange thing was that it always seemed easier when they were alone.

Away from cameras.

Away from expectations.

Away from everyone else.

The realization was mildly concerning.

When they returned inside, the atmosphere had shifted.

The auction portion of the evening was beginning.

Guests gathered near the stage.

Conversations blended into a steady hum.

Valeria recognized several faces from television.

A few from business magazines.

One from a corruption scandal she'd read about years earlier.

Apparently redemption happened faster if you donated enough money.

She was contemplating this observation when someone approached.

A woman.

Elegant.

Perfectly dressed.

Probably in her late thirties.

Valeria didn't recognize her.

The woman clearly recognized her.

"Mrs. Sterling."

The greeting sounded pleasant.

The smile didn't.

Valeria immediately became cautious.

"Good evening."

The woman glanced briefly toward Julius.

Then back at her.

"I've been meaning to meet you."

Something about the statement felt wrong.

Valeria couldn't explain why.

Only that it did.

The woman continued.

"You've certainly become famous."

The surrounding guests grew noticeably quieter.

Not enough to be obvious.

Enough to notice.

Valeria kept smiling.

"Apparently."

"Quite remarkable, really."

The woman sipped her champagne.

"Most people spend years building connections in this circle."

There it was.

The edge.

Sharper this time.

Several nearby guests exchanged glances.

The woman continued anyway.

"You managed it in a few weeks."

Silence spread.

Uncomfortable silence.

The kind that attracted attention.

Valeria understood exactly what was happening.

So did everyone else.

The woman wasn't insulting her directly.

She was doing something worse.

Creating space for others to draw conclusions.

The implication hung openly in the air.

Gold digger.

Opportunist.

Social climber.

The same accusations she had endured online.

Only now they were being delivered in person.

Publicly.

The woman smiled.

"Some people are simply very lucky."

For a brief moment, nobody spoke.

Valeria felt heat rise in her face.

Not because she believed the accusations.

Because she was tired.

Tired of defending herself.

Tired of being judged.

Tired of strangers deciding who she was.

Before she could formulate a response, another voice cut through the silence.

Cold.

Sharp.

Dangerously controlled.

"That's enough."

The room immediately went still.

Valeria turned.

Julius stood beside her.

His expression had changed.

Completely.

The calm composure she knew so well was gone.

Not entirely.

But enough.

His eyes remained fixed on the woman.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The woman visibly swallowed.

For the first time all evening, she looked uncertain.

And suddenly, Valeria realized something she had never seen before.

Julius Sterling was furious.

Truly furious.

And whatever happened next was probably going to be remembered long after the gala ended.

The problem with doubt was that once it appeared, it rarely stayed in one place. It spread.Quietly.Patiently.Like a crack beneath paint. At first, Valeria had dismissed the recent mistakes as unfortunate coincidences.People forgot things.Schedules changed.Emails disappeared.Administrative errors happened.Especially in organizations as large as Sterling Holdings. But eventually even coincidence starts demanding too much faith. And lately, faith felt expensive. The realization followed her into the hospital.Ethan had been discharged from intensive monitoring two days earlier.A milestone everyone seemed eager to celebrate.Including Ethan himself. The doctors remained cautious, but hopeful.Hopeful was a word Valeria had once been afraid to trust. Now she held onto it carefully.Like something fragile.Something precious. She sat beside his bed while he flipped through television channels."The nurses miss me already."Valeria rolled her eyes."They're celebrating.""Rude.""Ac

  • Signed into his trap    A Dangerous Kiss

The problem wasn't the kiss. The problem was everything that happened before it.At least, that's what Valeria told herself later.Because kisses didn't happen in isolation. They happened because of conversations.Because of glances.Because of moments that accumulated quietly until neither person could pretend they meant nothing. The trouble was that she and Julius had accumulated far too many moments. And neither of them had noticed how dangerous that had become.Or perhaps they had.Perhaps they had simply ignored it.Three days after discovering the missing file, the atmosphere inside Sterling Manor felt strained.Valeria was still angry. The kind of anger that settled beneath the surface and refused to leave.Julius hadn't offered any explanations.Rebecca had become impossible to corner.Victoria was acting increasingly distracted. And Margaret had somehow become even more careful about what she said.Every answer led to another question.Every question led nowhere.By Thursday
