Chapter 3

مؤلف: Heroic Thief
I pushed open the door to the CEO's office and saw Philip Woodward sitting in his executive chair, his face as dark as thunder.

"Just look at this, Siobhan Cortez!"

He shoved an iPad in front of me, his voice as cold as ice.

I glanced at the screen and read the shocking headline. "The Dark Side of Corporate Life: Niece of Senior Executive Failed Interview Due to Aunt Replacing Her With Another Candidate".

The post was filled with photos and text. Although the name of the company wasn't mentioned, my job title, name, and even the photos I'd taken of the company that I'd only ever posted on my private Instagram were all published for the whole world to see.

The comments under the post were filled with angry netizens.

"How can someone like that still be a senior executive?"

"Fire them! Fire them immediately!"

"Poor niece. Imagine being screwed over by your own aunt."

"This is what capitalism does to you!"

I read the comments and felt my stomach churning.

"These are all fabricated claims, Mr. Woodward," I said firmly, looking him in the eye. "I have never done anything of the sort nor influenced the HR Department in their decisions. I don't even know who conducted the interview. It's obvious that this is purely malicious slander for personal gain."

Mr. Woodward took a drag of his cigar and puffed out a cloud of smoke.

"The company will investigate whether it was fabricated or not. But Siobhan, this post has caused a very negative impact on the company. Everyone online is criticizing us now.

"To quell the public outcry, you will be temporarily suspended for now. You're expected to fully cooperate with the investigation. We'll talk again once it's done."

Although I had expected this outcome, my heart still sank to the pit of my stomach when I heard that he was suspending me.

I knew very well what it meant to be suspended. If the investigation results were inconclusive, or if the public outcry couldn't be quelled despite a thorough investigation, I would be fired in the end.

And then, my professional career would most likely come to a halt then and there.

"I believe that the company will clear my name, Mr. Woodward," I said through gritted teeth, forcing back bitter tears.

"Go handle the paperwork," he said, waving his hand to dismiss me without looking up.

I walked out of the office. The moment I closed the door, I heard the sound of a coffee mug shattering violently inside.

I leaned back against the cold wall, feeling as though all of my energy had been sucked out of me.

Right then, my phone began buzzing loudly again. I looked at the screen and saw that it was a call from my husband, Nate Atkins.

"Siobhan Cortez! What on earth did you do?"

Nate's tone was anxious and accusatory.

"Your mom just called me crying, saying you've been bullying Denise and robbing Erica of her recruitment spot! And every single one of your relatives has been yelling at me and insulting me for marrying a vicious woman like you. Why don't you just explain yourself in the group chat?"

My tears finally rolled down my cheeks at his words.

So, this was my husband.

The moment something terrible happened, the first thing he did wasn't to comfort me, take my side, or ask if I was okay. Instead, he joined the others and pointed his finger at me as well.

"You don't trust me either, do you, Nate?"

My voice was hoarse and shaky.

"What's the point if I trust you or not? Where's your proof?" he replied. "Denise has all the details, and she even has a witness on her side. How are you even planning to explain yourself?

"You keep saying that you didn't do it. Then, where's your evidence? Where's your proof? Show it!"

Nate's tone got angrier on the other end of the line. "I'm outside your office building right now. Come down at once. I'm bringing you back to the Cortez manor to explain yourself and stop embarrassing us in the group chat!"

"I'm not going," I said.

"Yes, you are, Siobhan!" Nate roared. "If you still refuse, then we're done!"

Several years passed. The flower shop did so well that I opened a second location in the neighboring town. Meanwhile, Nate was also promoted to head chef at the restaurant. We took out a small loan and bought a small house with a garden, and life was peaceful and happy. One day, I received a letter from home. It was from Aunt Melissa. She wrote to tell us that Simon was very ill and on his deathbed, and his final wish was to see us before he departed.Although Simon had taken Denise's side in causing trouble for me in the past, he was essentially an honest man. He'd just been manipulated by his wife. I did feel sorry for what happened to him afterward, but that didn't mean that I felt responsible for it.I deliberated for a long time and finally decided to fly home to visit him. However, I wasn't going to forgive him. I just wanted to give myself closure. When I stepped into the Cortez manor, I realized that everything had changed. The once bustling courtyard was dilapidated and

Nate was quiet for a long time. I knew that this was a hard decision for him to make. After all, he was the only son in his family. He had an older sister, but his parents had always been somewhat sexist. They thought of him as the only child responsible for caring for them in their old age.To them, Nate leaving would be akin to a betrayal. However, if we were to continue living here, Nate and I would never be able to escape our shadows. My seemingly kind yet indifferent relatives and their endless schemes and demands would eventually devour us."Alright." He finally nodded after thinking about it for a long while. "Let's go."At that moment, I saw relief in his eyes. Perhaps it was because he had wanted to escape for a long time. He just needed someone to give him a little push.…We quietly began making preparations in the days that followed. We sold the house, applied for our visas, and looked for jobs in the new place. Everything was done in secret, and we never told a soul

Life after my resignation was a lot calmer than I imagined.I spent a month thoroughly spring-cleaning and decluttering the house.Nate clearly wasn't happy with my resignation, but he didn't dare to boss me around like before anymore. After that last ordeal, he was very careful with his words and actions at home, as though he was trying to make amends. However, the crack that had appeared in my heart couldn't be healed that easily.A month later, I received a phone call from an unknown number."Hello? Is this Ms. Siobhan Cortez? I'm a reporter from The Daily News."The reporter sounded urgent. "This is in regard to your previous recruitment scandal. We've just learned of some new developments in the case, and we'd like to verify them with you.""What new developments?" I asked, feeling my heart sink again."Someone reported that Ms. Erica Cortez's interview evaluation scores were fabricated, and she also allegedly bribed the interviewer. Were you aware of this, Ms. Cortez?"I

Nate was silent during the drive home."I'm sorry," he finally said , breaking the quiet. I didn't respond to him and just turned to look out of the window."I was panicking at that time. Your mother wouldn't stop crying, and all your relatives kept calling to yell at me. My mind went blank and I…"He trailed off, gripping the steering wheel a little harder."I know you trusted me," I said softly. "But your trust was too fragile. It couldn't even survive the slightest hiccup."When it mattered most, you didn't stand by me. Instead, you told me to compromise. You know what, Nate? That made me feel even more disappointed than Denise's slander."Nate sighed and didn't say another word.It was late by the time we got back. I collapsed onto the couch, completely drained. I couldn't even find the strength to get up and shower. My phone vibrated just then. It was a text message from Penny."Hey, Siobhan, the company has issued a statement clarifying that it was just a malicious rum

I connected my phone to the projector in the yard. It had originally been installed outdoors for watching soccer games. I certainly didn't expect that I would be using it like this. The screen lit up, and the evaluation form was clearly displayed for everyone to see."This is Erica's interview evaluation form and the interviewer's comments for her preliminary interview," I said in a loud and clear voice, pointing at the screen. "Take a look for yourselves."Everyone craned their necks as they gathered around the screen to read."Professional Ability: 60/100"Communication Skills: 40/100"Teamwork: 30/100"Overall Comment: Candidate displayed an extremely arrogant attitude and lacked basic workplace etiquette. She was impatient with the interviewer's questions and repeatedly emphasized her family background. Candidate fails to meet the company's hiring standards."A heavy silence fell over the courtyard, broken only by the sound of the trees rustling in the back.Denise's face

I ended up going back with Nate to the Cortez manor. Before I left, however, I called Penny Addams, a colleague in the HR Department. She told me she couldn't give me any direct details, but she promised me that she would help me check Erica's interview evaluation form.As long as I had that evaluation form, I could prove that Erica was eliminated on her own merit and that I had absolutely nothing to do with it.It was already late evening by the time we arrived. The courtyard was brightly lit and bustling as though some sort of celebration was going on. My relatives were gathered around the outdoor table, chatting and snacking on chips. When they saw me walk in with Nate, their voices eventually died down, and everything went silent. Their gazes cut into me like sharp knives."Look, the bitch is back," Aunt Melissa said with a sneer, causing the others around her to chuckle in delight.Denise was seated right in the middle, still dabbing at her swollen eyes with a handkerchief.
