Chapter 4

Author: Burning Stone
"Besides, these things originally belonged to Asher. If he were still here, he would probably have given it to Phoebe too."

As soon as Archer's words fell, tears welled up in Dad's eyes. "Who does she think she is?"

The very next second, a slap whipped across my face with a gust of wind.

Dad's face contorted, making him look just like an evil spirit. He glared at me as if I was his mortal enemy he wanted to kill. "Ash should never have saved you, you ungrateful wretch! Why wasn't it you who died?"

My vision went red as blood pooled in my ruptured eye. The crimson hue flooded my retina, and through the haze, I thought I saw 18-year-old Asher in bloodstained sneakers, shooting hoops in the yard. Slowly, I extended my hand. "Save me, Asher. Take me with you!"

Seeing my reaction, Mom and Dad hurriedly turned around to look behind them. But how could Asher possibly be there?

Assuming I was playing mind games, Dad swung his fist at my face once more. The harder he hit me, the more violently his fists trembled.

Mom, who was beside him, lowered her head, as if she couldn't bring herself to watch anymore. For a fleeting moment, I thought I caught a flicker of heartache in Mom's and Dad's eyes. However, it was eclipsed by pure, unadulterated hate.

In a heartbeat, grief, self-reproach, regret, and sorrow swirled in my heart. I was well aware that Asher, who had sacrificed his life to save me, would never have wished for me to go through this. Yet, I couldn't help but feel like I deserve punishment.

It was less about enduring suffering and more about atonement. This self-inflicted suffering was the only thing that kept my overwhelming guilt from keeping me awake all night.

After that farce of a birthday banquet, I became completely invisible in my own home.

Then came the day Archer beat everyone else back home. He was on the phone with someone. "I sold the sneakers for 500 thousand dollars. Then, I spent 300 dollars to have an exact replica made. Those idiots in the Sullivan family won't suspect a thing.

"Don't sweat it. I've already swapped a bunch of the Sullivans' valuables for fakes and sold them off on the sly. The dead guy's things are worth the most; I made a fortune off them. Even if I do get caught, I'll just pin it all on that jinx!"

Archer thought he was home alone, so he bragged to the person on the other end of the line without a care in the world. Little did he know, I was crouched in the corner of the kitchen. I had intended to sneak some food to quiet my growling stomach, but I ended up overhearing his secret.

My mind spun with the words he had just uttered. "The dead guy's things are worth the most…" He had sold Asher's belongings, which were all he had left behind in this world.

"How could you do this, Archer? Mom and Dad are so good to you! Why would you lie to them? Give me back my brother's belongings—"

Just then, the front door swung open, and Mom and Dad walked in. Seeing me throw myself at Archer, they immediately demanded, "What do you think you're doing now, Phoebe?"

Startled, I stumbled and almost lost my footing. "Mom, Dad, Archer sold—"

Before I could finish speaking, Archer grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked me backward. "How dare you frame me! Mom, Dad, Phoebe's been secretly stealing valuables from the house to sell them off! I caught her red-handed, so she tried to pin it on me.

"When that didn't work, she tried to bolt. I feel so bad for you both. Phoebe, not only did you cause Asher's death, but you're now even eyeing the family's property!"

After hearing that, the hatred in Mom's and Dad's eyes could no longer be concealed.

Asher took my hand and said, "It's time for us to go. I'll always be by your side."Slowly, our figures began to fade, turning transparent. Mom threw herself at us when she witnessed that. "Pheebs!"The blood drained from Dad's face. "No, this can't be happening. They were right here... How could this be…""Open your eyes and look at me, Pheebs! You're just asleep. You're just trying to scare me, right?" Mom no longer cared about appearances as she held my lifeless body and began to confess her sins. "I'll never reprimand you again. I'll never hit you again. I'll never take my anger out on you because of your brother again. Please just look at me, okay?"Dad—a man who had only ever shed tears for Asher—actually shed tears for me too. The towering man knelt right beside my corpse, slamming his fists against the floor to vent his overwhelming remorse. His tears dripped onto the blood-soaked floor, soaking into the blood that had already dried. But Mom, Dad... I could no longer se

Dad couldn't take it anymore. He was so angry that he shook like a leaf, his chest heaving as he kicked Archer right in the stomach. "Shut the hell up!"However, beneath his furious outburst, a stark, unmistakable terror painted his face. He was afraid Asher would find out the truth and be disappointed in them.Doubled over in pain, Archer clutched his abdomen and sank to his knees on the floor. Yet, the madness in his eyes only intensified. "You're actually afraid. What's the point of being scared now? Both of you let me get away with everything I did back then. Her injuries were inflicted by your own hands!"Mom had dissolved into tears. Covering her mouth, she shook her head frantically as she looked at Asher, as if denying it could rewrite history and undo the horrors they had inflicted upon me. Asher lunged forward and slapped Archer across the face. His hands balled into fists. "I'll make all of you pay for this!" He helped me up from the couch, where I had been watching t

Sensing that I was about to reveal the truth, Mom hurriedly cut me off. "Pheebs, you were just discharged from the hospital, and you haven't fully recovered yet. Hurry up and go back to your room to get some rest!"Dad immediately chimed in. "That's right. Go on in. Don't just stand there." With that, they walked around Archer and ushered Asher and me inside.Staring at the backs of the four of us, Archer could no longer hide the resentment burning in his eyes. At this point, he already understood what was going on. Asher was back. From now on, how could there possibly be a place for him in this home? Once we reached the living room, Asher guided me to the couch and helped me settle in. The home he once knew so well was no longer the place in his memories. The spot that once held a photograph of our family of four had been supplanted by a portrait of just the three of them—Archer, Mom, and Dad. Even the wall where my drawing awards used to hang was now covered with Archer's profe

When I came to, the first thing I saw was Asher's weary face. His eyes were heavily bloodshot, brimming with concern for me. "You're awake, Pheebs! How are you feeling? Does it hurt?" Looking into his eyes, everything from the past felt like a bad dream. It felt as though none of those horrible things had ever happened—Asher hadn't died saving me, Mom and Dad hadn't adopted Archer, and the four of us were still a happy family. Noticing that I was still zoning out, Asher started panicking again. "Are you still in pain, Pheebs? I'll get the doctor for you!" With that, he spun on his heel to run out of the ward.Reality finally crashed over me. This wasn't a dream; Asher was really back. "Don't go, Asher! Don't leave me!"After hearing my cry, he turned right back around. I hastily threw my arms around him, pouring my heart out about how much I'd missed him. Asher, too, held me tightly. He still didn't know the whole story, but he knew with absolute certainty that his younger si

Sporting limited-edition Cobes on his feet, Asher hurried up to me. He didn't seem to care that my blood was staining his pristine white shirt. "Pheebs, what happened to you? Pheebs? Mom, Dad, why'd you hit Pheebs?"Asher was dressed in the same outfit he wore the day he died. Gazing at him, I honestly thought I was dreaming. I goggled at him, and for a moment, it was as if I couldn't even feel the excruciating pain racking my body. Asher looked a little disoriented himself. Taking in my battered and bruised condition, he had no idea what was going on, but he immediately rushed over to check on me. "Call an ambulance! Quickly, save my sister!" He frantically searched for a phone to call emergency services, yet he didn't forget to comfort me. "Hang in there, Pheebs. I'm here. I won't let anything happen to you!" His gorgeous face was soaked with tears. Mom and Dad, who had come to their senses, reached out to confirm whether their precious son had truly returned. Asher, however,

  • Sold-Out Sister: My Brother Died for Me   Chapter 5

I was well aware that Mom and Dad weren't looking at me; they were looking at an enemy who had killed Asher and was now attempting to steal from them. Mom and Dad only needed a reason to vent their anger. Neither of them cared if Archer was telling the truth, nor did they give a damn if I was being framed. But I cared. Asher's death was indeed my fault. Mom and Dad could beat me and curse at me, and I'd take it, but they absolutely couldn't slander me. "It wasn't me! I didn't do it! It was Archer—"My attempt to defend myself only seemed to fan the flames of Dad's fury. He grabbed a wooden club and swung it at me. "Ash died saving you, yet you're stealing from your own family? We don't raise thieves in this house!" The moment Asher was mentioned, tears cascaded down my face. "I didn't do it! If Asher were still here, he would believe me!" God, what I'd give to have Asher back. If he were still here, I would undoubtedly be the happiest person on earth. He would take me out for
