LOGINI was absent-minded as I sat in front of the marriage documents. My conversation with Cassian's Mother was still replaying in my mind. Spy on her son?
I asked her why. "I am just worried about him. He has become so lonely, and I fear for his mental health. Cassian changed ever since the accident, and I worry he is not going to get better." She looked genuinely concerned. That sounded noble enough. It's not like she would be doing anything wrong if it were for a good cause. It was to calm a Mother. "Elara? Elara! Where has your mind gone?" My Mother's strict tone snapped me out of my thoughts. She was already glaring at me as everyone looked. "Oh. Right. Sorry." I said awkwardly as I collected the pen from Cassian, who was giving me a strange look. It had been a really small affair all right. I was dressed in a simple corporate gown, and only our parents, siblings, and the minister were present. I looked at the papers. I was signing away my life. No escape. I was becoming the wife of Cassian Rooke. There was no going back. I gulped as I signed. This was for the children, not for me. I needed to protect them at all costs. It was done. "It is done. You are now married. Congratulations." He said, plainly taking the signed papers. Just like that, I was married. I dreamed about my wedding day so many times. I imagined being whisked off by a Prince in a charming suit, and I in a white ball gown, but none of that was going to happen. I had been sold to a man I hadn't even had a decent conversation with. I maintained my smile as the parents congratulated us while our siblings snickered. The ceremony was held at the Rooke's mansion. "That is all. Congratulations to you both. I'm sure you will like to be on your own now. I've called for your driver already." Mrs. Rooke said as she walked up to us. She glanced at me briefly, giving me a small smile. "Elara, dear, be respectful to your husband and try to please him as much as possible." Mom said to me as she hugged me. Before she pulled back, she whispered something. "Make sure you do your duty and seduce him so you can get pregnant. Don't be totally useless." She pulled back and squeezed my hands as I winced. The driver pulled up, and soon Cassian and I were in the car on our way to our new home. The drive took thirty minutes tops, and soon we were driving up a long stone-path driveway that led to a very beautiful mansion straight out of a movie. I came down and looked around. This was definitely a beautiful place. I turned to Cassian as we walked inside. "Um... where will I-" "Isla!" He called out. A petite young lady rushed up. "Yes, sir?" "Show the guest to her quarters and prepare dinner earlier. I'm sure she's famished." At that moment, my stomach growled, and I almost died from embarrassment. It was true though. I had been so nervous that I couldn't eat for fear that I would throw up. "Of course, sir." Cassian walked off in what seemed to be his wing and left me with the maid. "Here, miss. Your quarters are this way." She said a bit nonchalantly. I watched as she strutted in front of me, not even helping with my bags. Was that normal? I panted behind her, dragging my luggage on what seemed to be an endless staircase. "Here is your room. Dinner is at 7 pm. Don't be late." She pointed at a door, then walked off. Attitude. Well, I knew living here wouldn't be easy. I finally collapsed on the bed as I finished unpacking. My room was so spacious compared to my old place. It was terrifying. I sighed as I looked at the time and saw it was 6 pm already. I needed to get ready. I hummed as I sat in front of my mirror, brushing my hair. Maybe I could actually grow to like this place. I stood up at 10 minutes to 7 and made my way downstairs. The house was as big as a castle. I got lost twice before I finally found my way. As I finally managed to find my way and got to the dining area, I saw plates being cleared as though someone had just finished eating. I saw a maid cleaning up. "Um... where is dinner?" I asked her. She gave me a look. "Good evening, ma'am. My name is Rose. Dinner is by 6 pm, ma'am. I thought Isla told you. Mr. Rooke has already eaten and retired to his room. He figured you weren't interested in joining him." She said as she finished clearing up. "Huh? But... But Isla told me dinner was by 7 pm." I said, confused. "No. It's by 6 pm. Perhaps you misheard." "No, I didn't." I realized what had happened. Isla tricked me. I clenched my fists. How could she do that? "Is there a problem, ma'am? Should I serve your dinner?" I huffed then nodded. Isla ruined my reputation in front of Cassian. He was going to think I hid from him on purpose. I ate silently as I thought about how rude I probably looked to Cassian this evening. How would I even go about defending myself? He probably wouldn't even believe me. I begrudgingly finished eating and tried finding my way to the balcony. I wasn't going to risk asking anyone and end up in the dungeons. As I finally sat outside, I thought. Now I was married and a member of the Rooke family. On the bright side, my family would no longer be able to hurt me, or at least they would think twice before trying to. I glanced at my phone as a text popped up. It was from Vivienne. 'I hope you haven't forgotten our arrangement.' What arrangement? It's not like I agreed. I just sprinted out of there. I sighed as I put the phone down. I actually had no other choice. If I didn't do as she asked, God knows what she would do, plus it was just a little harmless spying. I didn't even have to give her anything relevant. With that decision, I finally decided to go inside and get ready for bed. I got lost again. Damn it! I tried finding my way, but it wasn't easy, especially with all the lights turned off. I finally found my room and hurriedly went in. I needed to sleep. As I sat down, I noticed something by my bed stand. Waiting neatly on the bedside table was a black leather book. Stamped in silver across the front: THE RULES OF ROOKE MANOR.Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie
“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca
I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik
While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.“I’m completely fine.” I snapped. He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”He really was a man of few words.“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I
That didn’t sound good. At all. I sighed in frustration. Whatever they wanted to say couldn’t be good.“Ma’am. Where are we off to next?”Did I want to go?“To my parents' place. My father has asked to see me.”I rested my head on the headrest as I exhaled.I couldn’t even catch a break after my gruesome lunch with Vivienne.I didn’t even eat anything. As I came in view of my parents’ house, I realized how much I did not miss this place. I did not want to be there. I actually felt better at Cassian’s place than at my childhood home. How ironic.I walked slowly to the door as I contemplated ringing the doorbell. I sighed as I raised my finger and pressed the doorbell. It didn’t take up to a minute when the housekeeper, Alison, opened the door. She had been working for us since I was about six years old. She was literally a shadow of my mother and followed her about mindlessly. She gave me a stiff nod as she ushered me in.“Where are my parents?” I asked the vile-looking old woman. She
I thought about what to tell Vivienne when I went to meet her. Something that would not end up with my head on a plate.I constantly fidgeted with my hands as Tony drove me to work."Are you alright, ma'am?" Tony asked, looking at me through the mirror.I got startled out of my thoughts. "Uh.. Yes.. Just ready for a wonderful day." I said with fake cheeriness. He didn't push further.I guess he knew I wasn't in the mood.Yes, I was scared of her. Who wasn't?Everyone knew how ruthless she was, and she wasn't exactly "motherly" the first time she spoke to me."Miss Elara!" Excited voices greeted me as I hugged the children.I was always happy when I saw their smiling faces. It made all the trouble worth it.After greeting the children, I went straight to my office, and before I could sit, Beth barged in with documents."Elara, I just need you to sign these papers today, and you can be on your way." She said, holding a bunch of files."Where are you off to in a hurry anyway? You usually
