登入“U..uh I…I-“ I closed my mouth and kept quiet.
Cassian raised his brow.
“Sure. Come in.” I side-stepped to allow him entry as I cleared my throat.
He sat down on a sofa and stretched his legs almost in a relaxed manner.
“Do you have s… something to say?” I stammered.
He looked at me.
“This house is yours as much as mine. Feel free to do whatever you want. Decorate, plant. Anything that makes you feel comfortable. We shall present ourselves to the outside world as a married couple, but we shall respect our boundaries in this house. While you have freedom to do whatever you want, please respect my boundaries. That’s all I ask.”
“It was already quite clear in the rule book you gave me. Don’t worry. I’ll adhere to it. Is that all?” I asked as I sat on my bed.
“About the clause in our marriage arrangement, I’ll give you three months to settle in. I believe that should be more than enough time for you to get used to the idea.”
I felt my cheeks heat up. “D.. Do you mean getting pregnant?”
“Yes.” He stood up. “I hope you’re not too bothered by the idea?” He placed his hands in his pockets. “Have a good night's rest.”
I looked as he closed the door behind him and finally let out a deep breath. Three months. I was expected to get ready to be impregnated in three months. I almost laughed at my life. Most people get pregnant through intimacy with their partners by making love, while I was being scheduled like a period date.
A knock sounded on my door. “Ma’am, I have brought up your dinner.”
“Come in.” I called out to her.
Rose walked in with a trolley of food and began arranging them on my bed.
“Is there anything else you need, ma’am?”
Yes, a book on how to plan to get pregnant.
“No. Please call me Elara.” I said, giving her a small smile.
“O.. okay.” She said hesitantly and then took her leave.
I looked at the food as I sat down to eat.
This was not the life I planned for myself.
I sat in front of my mirror as I brushed through my hair. Today was bright, and I had a feeling it was going to be good. It just felt right. The sun was shining, and I could hear the water crashing against the rocks down by the lake.
I finished getting ready and made my way downstairs. I wasn’t going to work today. I didn’t normally go in on Saturdays.
I paused at the last step as I saw something I never thought I would. The maids were all bustling about like they were preparing for something.
I got off the last step and saw that they didn’t even notice me. They were all busy preparing. I yelped as I was almost hit by a trolley of flowers.
“What’s going on? Is an event happening?” I asked one of the maids who glanced at me, then walked away like she didn’t hear me.
I frowned as I walked around looking for Rose. I finally found her in the kitchen. A feast was being prepared.
Everyone turned to me when I entered, and hushed voices were heard.
Rose came up to me. “Ma’am! Is there something you need? You could have called for me. It’s not right for you to be here.”
“I told you to call me Elara. Is something happening? Everyone is so busy.” I said as I looked around.
“Oh. It’s all for Miss Celeste. She is coming today.”
My ears stood. A woman coming to this manor?
“C.. Celeste? Who is that?”
She bit her lip like she was considering what to say. “Um… she is Master Rooke’s… friend. They’ve been friends for a long time.”
“W.. why didn’t anyone tell me she was coming?”
Rose didn’t say anything as she kept quiet.
They didn’t respect me as the lady of the house. No one did. Heck, Cassian barely acknowledged my presence. I furrowed my brows. If Melissa were the one who got married to Cassian, would she be pushed around like this?
Definitely not. She would make sure everyone knew she was the lady of the house.
I, however, was far too timid. I turned to Rose.
“It’s alright. I’ll just have my breakfast in the garden and stay out of your way.”
I would spend the afternoon reading. It was not a big deal.
I barely read my book. I was consumed with peeking at what the maids were bringing in.
Flowers of different assortments. It was almost like a party.
I scoffed. Half of this hadn’t even been done for my wedding.
“Ma’am, wouldn’t you like to go freshen up? Miss Celeste is almost here.” A maid walked up to me.
“I am fine exactly as I am. Don’t tell me what to do.” I snapped at the girl.
She looked taken aback as she mumbled apologies and ran away.
Maybe that was a little rude, but my goodness. Celeste this, Celeste that. I was already tired of hearing that name. Was she all that?
I had been on one page for close to an hour. I was more focused on the door at this point.
I had even gone up to my room twice to try to dissipate my nerves. It didn’t work, and on those two occasions, I heard the maids whispering about Miss Celeste and how graceful and elegant she was.
When it finally felt like I would die from waiting, I heard a noise.
It was the sound of a car approaching. I guess she was finally here.
I walked to the transparent doors as I peeked from the side.
I was only seeing the maids line up, but there was no woman. I saw Cassian come down dressed in casual clothes. I hadn’t seen him all day, yet he came to meet his friend.
I continued watching as I bit my lip.
I heard a female laugh first before I saw her. A woman with her blonde hair in a bun and dressed in jeans and a top. She was breathtaking.
I gasped as I watched her run to Cassian, as she hugged him tightly and even ruffled his hair.
She pulled back and said something that made Cassian laugh. I had never heard him laugh before.
Who exactly was she? Were she and Cassian together?
Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie
“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca
I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik
While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.“I’m completely fine.” I snapped. He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”He really was a man of few words.“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I
That didn’t sound good. At all. I sighed in frustration. Whatever they wanted to say couldn’t be good.“Ma’am. Where are we off to next?”Did I want to go?“To my parents' place. My father has asked to see me.”I rested my head on the headrest as I exhaled.I couldn’t even catch a break after my gruesome lunch with Vivienne.I didn’t even eat anything. As I came in view of my parents’ house, I realized how much I did not miss this place. I did not want to be there. I actually felt better at Cassian’s place than at my childhood home. How ironic.I walked slowly to the door as I contemplated ringing the doorbell. I sighed as I raised my finger and pressed the doorbell. It didn’t take up to a minute when the housekeeper, Alison, opened the door. She had been working for us since I was about six years old. She was literally a shadow of my mother and followed her about mindlessly. She gave me a stiff nod as she ushered me in.“Where are my parents?” I asked the vile-looking old woman. She
I thought about what to tell Vivienne when I went to meet her. Something that would not end up with my head on a plate.I constantly fidgeted with my hands as Tony drove me to work."Are you alright, ma'am?" Tony asked, looking at me through the mirror.I got startled out of my thoughts. "Uh.. Yes.. Just ready for a wonderful day." I said with fake cheeriness. He didn't push further.I guess he knew I wasn't in the mood.Yes, I was scared of her. Who wasn't?Everyone knew how ruthless she was, and she wasn't exactly "motherly" the first time she spoke to me."Miss Elara!" Excited voices greeted me as I hugged the children.I was always happy when I saw their smiling faces. It made all the trouble worth it.After greeting the children, I went straight to my office, and before I could sit, Beth barged in with documents."Elara, I just need you to sign these papers today, and you can be on your way." She said, holding a bunch of files."Where are you off to in a hurry anyway? You usually
