I looked between them like they didn’t just drop a bomb on me.

“Don’t you think you moved on a little too quickly, Cass?” Celeste narrowed her eyes at him.

“Will you stop being dramatic?” Cassian spoke as he turned to me. “Celeste will be staying with us. I hope you treat her well.”

I merely nodded as I ate. This was a whole lot of information to take in at once. Why was his ex staying with us? What was going on between them?

I excused myself when I was done, although I doubt they heard me, considering Celeste was telling another story.

Why was I so bothered? It’s not like I liked Cassian. This was an arranged marriage. Yes, it was.

I brought out my phone as I walked up the stairs. I was sure Vivienne would like this type of information, and maybe I would finally be able to get into her good books.

‘Good afternoon, Mrs. Rooke. I thought you would like to know that Cassian’s friend Celeste just came, and she will be staying here with us.’

‘Good. Keep up the good work.’

I sighed as I finally got to my room. I already knew I was going to hate the next couple of days.

It had been three days since Celeste moved in. Ever since the dinner, I had barely seen them again. They had missed dinner because they were busy in Cassian’s study, according to Rose. How lovely.

She was so easily allowed in places I was banned from.

Since my supposed husband had someone to keep him company, I decided to focus my energy on other things. I had a meeting today with potential investors, and I absolutely needed to impress them.

I put more effort into my looks, making sure I looked as professional as possible. There was no room for error whatsoever.

I was already out the door by 7 am, walking to the gates of the very huge manor. I didn’t have a car, so I had to walk till I got to the main roads, where I could finally hail a taxi.

It was very tiring, but I didn’t have much of a choice. I didn’t have the money to get a car.

I checked my watch for the umpteenth time as I tapped my feet impatiently. I had been waiting close to thirty minutes, and I still had not seen a cab.

“Looks like I’m going to have to start walking.” I said to myself as I prepared.

I hadn’t gotten far when something horrible happened.

I yelled and fell to the ground as muddy water splashed on me.

“Oh my God!” I yelled as I tried standing up, my eyes widening at my now ruined clothes.

“Oh, I am so sorry, let me help you. I didn’t see you.” I heard a male voice speak as I felt arms help me up.

I finally opened my eyes and glared. “You didn’t see me?! I had no idea I was that tiny. You ruined my clothes!” I yelled at him.

“I’m really sorry. Is there anything I can do to help you out, to show how sorry I am?”

“Ugh. I don’t have time for this. I have an important meeting, and I am already late enough as it is.” I groaned.

“Okay, how about I take you home so you can change, then I drop you off at work? It’s the least I could do.”

I contemplated. I was already late, and I needed to change, and only God knew if I would be able to get a taxi when I came out.

“Fine.” I finally said.

He drove me back to the manor while I sat quietly in the car. Luckily, I just had to tell the security guard he was a colleague, and they let him in.

I ran into my bathroom as I hurriedly took off my clothes and washed the mud off me as quickly as possible. In less than five minutes, I was back outside, dressed and ready to leave.

I really was thankful the stranger dropped me, but I wasn’t going to show it. I panted as I quickly entered my office and met two men dressed in suits. They didn’t look too pleased, and I gulped as I greeted them and sat down.

“Good afternoon. So sorry for the delay. I hope I didn’t keep you men waiting for so long.”

“Miss Hart, we came here out of courtesy for your father, and you treat us like this? This is very discouraging.” One of them spoke with a frown.

“Please be swift about whatever you have to say. We have other matters to attend to today.” The other said, checking his watch.

I took a deep breath as I started speaking, telling them why helping out a children’s foundation is a call to serve humanity.

“Miss Hart, serving humanity? We don’t run a charity. We run a business, and it is precisely because we are focused on profits that our business continues to thrive. There is no need to invest in a foundation that has no social presence, connections to other elites, or even a simple return on investment. We can’t just spend money to feed and clothe children who do not even know us. The world doesn’t work that way.”

“But sir-“

“Next time, we would appreciate it if you sent us an email, and then we would decide if this is worth a second glance or not. Do not bother us like this again.”

Both of them stood up and took their leave.

I sat there dejected. “Well, that was humiliating.”

I had no other way to get an investor. They were right. Who would want to invest in a children’s foundation just for the fun of it? If I was going to keep this foundation afloat, I needed a way to make money. I needed something to sustain not only the children, but me as well. I had to survive.

I spent a very depressing day in the office and finally left for home.

When I got to the manor, I was so tired that I wasn’t even hungry. I just wanted to cuddle up in bed and sleep.

After I finished showering and changing into my nightwear, I decided to get a glass of water from downstairs.

I was walking down the stairs when I heard noises. I paused on the stairs and heard voices like two people were talking.

The voices were coming from the outside balcony.

I kept my steps light as I walked till I could see whoever was talking. It was Cassian and Celeste.

I rolled my eyes. I wasn’t even surprised.

I was about to make my way to the kitchen when my eyes saw something. Celeste was touching Cassian’s mask, and he was letting her?

I watched as I held my breath. He didn’t push her away. Instead, he touched her hand and leaned into her touch? I saw Celeste close the space between them like they were about to kiss.

They were going to kiss!

Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie

“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca

I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik

While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.“I’m completely fine.” I snapped. He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”He really was a man of few words.“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I

That didn’t sound good. At all. I sighed in frustration. Whatever they wanted to say couldn’t be good.“Ma’am. Where are we off to next?”Did I want to go?“To my parents' place. My father has asked to see me.”I rested my head on the headrest as I exhaled.I couldn’t even catch a break after my gruesome lunch with Vivienne.I didn’t even eat anything. As I came in view of my parents’ house, I realized how much I did not miss this place. I did not want to be there. I actually felt better at Cassian’s place than at my childhood home. How ironic.I walked slowly to the door as I contemplated ringing the doorbell. I sighed as I raised my finger and pressed the doorbell. It didn’t take up to a minute when the housekeeper, Alison, opened the door. She had been working for us since I was about six years old. She was literally a shadow of my mother and followed her about mindlessly. She gave me a stiff nod as she ushered me in.“Where are my parents?” I asked the vile-looking old woman. She

I thought about what to tell Vivienne when I went to meet her. Something that would not end up with my head on a plate.I constantly fidgeted with my hands as Tony drove me to work."Are you alright, ma'am?" Tony asked, looking at me through the mirror.I got startled out of my thoughts. "Uh.. Yes.. Just ready for a wonderful day." I said with fake cheeriness. He didn't push further.I guess he knew I wasn't in the mood.Yes, I was scared of her. Who wasn't?Everyone knew how ruthless she was, and she wasn't exactly "motherly" the first time she spoke to me."Miss Elara!" Excited voices greeted me as I hugged the children.I was always happy when I saw their smiling faces. It made all the trouble worth it.After greeting the children, I went straight to my office, and before I could sit, Beth barged in with documents."Elara, I just need you to sign these papers today, and you can be on your way." She said, holding a bunch of files."Where are you off to in a hurry anyway? You usually
