Nerissa POV

Edna examined me for forty minutes.

She didn't speak much during it. That was fine because I didn't want to have a conversation. I sat on the edge of the examination table in the healer's room on the second floor and let her hands move where they needed to move and kept my eyes on the wall opposite and thought about nothing deliberately.

Edna's hands were precise and clinical. She catalogued everything with detached efficiency. But her hands stilled twice, once over my ribs.

Kaelor POVIt started with the letter I found in the supply crate lining three weeks ago insideObsidian Keep before we rode out to Red Claw.‘What you're looking for has been found. Proof available upon agreement."That was my sister who has been missing for fourteen years.I gave Zayden my answer that night in the equipment room. Told the two Ashmoorwolves sitting on the floor that the answer was no and made them talk and tookeverything they gave me and handed it to Darius.Except it wasn't finished because the letter said proof was available. Now she is alive. Which means they had something physical, something that could beverified or they wouldn't have used the word proof. It existed inside Ashmoor Dominion'sinfrastructure that told the story of what happened to a woman who was taken from aburning pack house fourteen years ago.I rejected the offer, but the word proof had been sitting in the back of everything sinceand it followed me through the mountain pass and

Rowan POVI have been coordinating the border response with Garrett and two of my senior warriorswhen the eastern gate sound hit.The crack of something under force. A distraction, well timed and placed. II fell for it completely because my attention stretched thin between the border strategyand twenty Obsidian wolves in my yard and Nerissa. Garrett figured it out faster than me.He headed to the pack house on a run before I finished processing what the soundactually was.By the time I reached the main corridor it was already over in one sense.Kaelor was walking Nerissa out.The bruise from yesterday was worse today.Swollen into something that had spread beyond the original site and darkened into thedeep colors that came when the same place got hit twice.I stood against the corridor wall and watched Kaelor move her through to the entranceand I breathed through what my wolf was doing and kept my hands at my sides and lether pass because she was moving under her

Nerissa POVThe two Ashmoor wolves didn't touch me.The stable door opened again before either of them moved toward me and Mara walkedin with her sharp face set in the particular expression she wore when she decidedsomething. She looked at the two wolves first, then at me.Then at the saddled horse behind me."Running again," she said."I was preparing to leave with Alpha Zayden," I said. "Tonight. As arranged.""Alpha Zayden's arrangement has been rearranged." Mara said.I looked at the two wolves by the door."Who are they?" I said."Guests," she said. "Here to assist with a transaction.""Mara, whatever Calista told you. Whatever she offered you. Think about what you'redoing." I said."I've thought about it," she said. "Thoroughly.""Zayden is inside this pack house right now," I said. "With twenty wolves.""Who are currently occupied with a border situation on the eastern approach," she said."Conveniently."The gate sound, the crack of wood from outside was a d

Nerissa POVI heard what happened in the corridor. The door between me and it muffled the words into shapes but I heard the quality ofZayden's voice. That particular voice that had no volume. The voice that made whateverwas in its path reorganize itself around the fact of it.I heard Mara's voice respond once. The silence lasted so long that I stood up from the bed and moved to the door andpressed my hand flat on it and stood there deciding whether to open it.Harper came before I decided. She slipped inside and closed the door behind her with her eyes wide."He didn't touch her," Harper said immediately."What did he say?" I said."Few things," Harper said. "I only caught two of them clearly. He told her that what shehad done to you within eleven years was documented and that he would be returning"she said "And the third sentence?" I said."I didn't catch it," Harper said. "But Mara went the color of cold ash and hasn't movedfrom the kitchen doorway since."I

Zayden POVThe rider arrived at dawn.I was already awake. I have been awake for most of the night going through Kaelor'scompiled intelligence on the eleven compromised wolves and the network they hadbeen running inside the fortress. I cross-referenced names, identifying which informationhad moved through which contact point. Building the full picture of what Ashmoor hadknown about Obsidian Keep's internal workings before Kaelor shut the network down.It was detailed work. One that required complete attention and got it from me because complete attention todetail was the thing that had kept this fortress standing through seven years of threatsthat should have dismantled it.The rider's horse in the outer yard pulled me from it.I heard it through the study window. The sound of a horse pushed hard over distancearriving at a gate that opened fast because the gate wolves recognized the rider'sinsignia.Dorian Vane's insignia.I was at the study door before the ride

Nerissa POVSomething was wrong with the pack meeting. Omegas didn't sit in senior warrior gatherings regardless of what they knew or what theyhad survived. That particular boundary inside the Red Claw Pack had not shifted simplybecause I came back different. What was wrong was the aftermath.I noticed it the morning after Rowan's second emergency meeting in four days. Thetension that moved through the pack house when the wolves who led it had been giveninformation that changed the shape of their understanding of something. The uncertainty of wolves who had been told one thing and were now being toldsomething adjacent to it that didn't quite fit alongside the first thing cleanly.I watched it move through the breakfast rotation from my position near the back of thekitchen corridor where the smell was manageable if I stayed close to the door.Senior warriors who have been in the meeting moved differently this morning.Garrett caught my eye through the corridor once.

Nerissa POVI noticed it first on a Tuesday or what I thought was Tuesday. Days inside Obsidian Keep had a way of blurring into each other.
