MasukHELENA
Pain surged through my body as I tried to sit up and get myself off the ground. The pain was sharp and sudden. Chasing away the last traces of weakness I had. Along with it, the hope of survival. In my condition, it didn’t matter what I did. I couldn’t fight my way through what was coming. I gritted my teeth and tried pushing myself off the ground again.
Pain shot through me; my arms trembled and gave out. I cursed under my breath. I thought I had broken free from the clatches of death when I left the palace. I never thought the outside was worse than where I came from. I had hopes for a better life, I was fooling myself, nothing good ever happened to people like me.
On third try, I got the same results. I fell back down. I didn’t give up. frustrated, I tried again and this time I succeeded. The moment I put wait on my foot, it screamed in pain, but I pushed through it. No, it wasn’t the time for it give up on me. Not now, not when my life depended on it. I thought as I stood. Twigs broke under the heavy rushed footsteps that were getting closer by the second.
I tried to move but I fell back down, hard. I was lightheaded. Hungry. Desperate, I clawed my way forward with my hands, trying to get deeper into the bushes. To escape. But who was I fooling, those people were going to catch up with me soon and I would be done for. My breath caught in my throat at the thought.
It came out in short, uneven gasps. That was the definition of grasping at straws. My pathetic self, thinking I could outrun people who were in good health. What a joke! the sounds of their boots sounded loud in my ears, too loud. I didn’t stop; I kept dragging my useless body forward. I couldn’t die like that. I refused. “Over here!” My heart stopped and so did my movements. They found me. I shut my eyes tight, my mind blank waiting for pain to hit. For my end to come.
Who were those people, the bandits, the palace guards or something worse? I couldn’t tell, well, how could I? my eyes were closed tight. The pain I was waiting for never came. Giving up, I opened my eyes to look, I turned and laid on my side. A man stood at my feet. I only glanced at him for a moment before another emerged from the trees.
Wearing travel worn out clothes, not a uniform, not an armor. That somewhat put me at ease. The man was tall, broad shoulders, striking features. If it were any other day, in a different situation, maybe I would have taken my time to admire him. He stopped next to the man first man. Looked at me from head to toe. Saw my injuries, the pathetic state I was in then my maid’s uniform. He raised an eyebrow. I saw no cruelty in his eyes, curiosity maybe.
Behind them another voice called out. I tensed, “Did you find anything?” None of them said anything, they kept their eyes on me, sharp and unreadable. For a moment, neither of us moved. I kept my eyes locked on the tall figure. He looked like he was in charge of whatever their group was. “She is just a villager.” He finally said.
Keeping his voice casual, my breath caught, a lie, why? Footsteps got close behind him and the man finally came to view. He looked at me briefly before losing interest. He didn’t notice the maids’ uniform; my injuries were enough for him to render me useless. He turned to him, the tall man. “She looks half dead, leave her. We don’t have time for strays.” I laughed internally, I didn’t know how many times I heard words like that. I never thought I would hear then out here though.
But I didn’t dare speak, the tall man didn’t move, not right away. His gaze lingered on me with mixed emotions in his eyes, but his expression remained cold. He was curios and maybe suspicious. He then turned. “Let’s go.” He said, they began walking away. I sat there frozen, barely breathing. Afraid even the sound of my breath would bring them back.
The sounds of their footsteps faded away slowly. I listened, sitting still until they faded completely. Silence followed and I waited. One minute, two, three that was when I breathed a sigh of relief. They were gone. My arm gave out and my cheek hit the ground. I closed my eyes feeling the pain, it didn’t matter, I was alive. The man’s words echoed in my mind. “Just a villager”
Why would he lie for me? we didn’t know each other. What was his motive? I brushed that thought out of my mind. He was gone and I was safe. A twig snapped from behind me, snapping me out of it. My eyes flew open, my breath caught. “You are not very good at playing dead.” My heart stopped, he was back, why?
QUEEN DOWAGER“If we cannot kill the Crown Prince now, then we replace him.” the king furrowed his eyebrows. “What reason will we give the people for doing that.” since when did the royal family need any reason to do anything. “We tell then the Crown Prince asked for it.” he was the people’s prince; the regent position suited him better for what he was doing.“We will name him Prince Regent, let him serve the people but the third prince must take the crown prince position.” He frowned. “What? do you not like my suggestion?” he let out a tired sigh. “Mother, I know you mean well but I still don’t see why it must be the third prince.” I knew what he was thinking. He wanted one of the princes he liked to take the position, but what was the use of that when they would be working for him in the end. “My mind is made up; the third prince is perfect for the position.” He stood flickering his sleeve. “Mother, don’t forget that I am the king, I rule this kingdom not you.” I didn’t know why he
JULIANA dull ache spread across my chest. Tears stung heavy behind my eyes. All strength left me. I swallowed hard wetting my dry throat. I opened my mouth to say something but all I managed to do was to open my mouth. No words came out. I gave my guard in the corner a look and he left the room quietly closing the door behind me.I looked at my princess kneeling on the floor, making herself smaller and invisible. I did that to her; my words were too harsh and scared her. I forgot her past, I forgot how my kind stripped her of all dignity and made her into an obedient tool. I may have never done anything to her. but I was once a blind arrogant, entitled fool who couldn’t care less about her kind.Royals like me and the nobles with our statuses were and still are the reason normal people like her are treated like tools to be used for our amusement. Guilt and shame were eating me alive. Pressing down hard on my whole being. Things couldn’t go on like this. The kingdom had to change. I t
HELENA When the matron went to greet Julian at the gate. I slipped inside and hid. I wasn’t ready to see him yet. But knowing he was out there, just a few pacing from me. knowing that we were only separated by a wall got me anxious. It wasn’t long before the matron came back and told us the crown prince wanted to meet the newcomers.I knew then we couldn’t hide any longer. “Princess, what are we supposed to do now?” a tired sigh left me. “Our names were taken when we came in.” meeting him could not be avoided. But that didn’t necessarily mean I should be the one to meet him. “You go and meet him.” he frowned.“Do I have to wear women’s clothes again?” he looked horrified. I chuckled. “No men are allowed here, if you go like this, how are you going to explain it?” I asked, my eyebrow raised in a teasing manner. He had complained the whole way here yesterday when I made him wear women’s clothes. But how else were we both going to be able to get into the shelter. It was better we regist
JULIAN I was about to leave the Eastern Palace when I finally got news about Helena. It didn’t say where she was, just that she was safe. Relief washed over me as I read the note over and over. I missed her and wanted her with me. but part of me knew that it was not time to bring her into the palace yet. I couldn’t even keep myself safe, I slept in different places every night just to avoid the assassins that kept making attempts on my life. not only that, but I also recently discovered that my grandmother was planning to hand my position over to my third brother. If he weren’t such a moron, I would have given it to him myself. But my brother was spineless and easy to manipulate. What kind of king would he make if he were to become the crown prince? my grandmother was always going to be around, at some point, he would have to stand on his own and lead the kingdom. What would he do then? My grandmother wasn’t thinking about the bigger picture, only power.“Your Highness, where to?” I
HELENA“What are you doing?” I caught the guard just as he tied a small scroll to the pigeon’s leg. “I am sending a message to his Highness.” I frowned; “Wait.” My fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Every instinct urged me to run to Julian. If anyone could protect me, it was him. But if the rumours I had heard were true, then even the Crown Prince’s Palace might no longer be the safest place. “Change the message, just say we are safe, no need to tell him where we are.” He frowned but did as told. “Why don’t you want him to know?” I wish I could tell him. By the time we reached the capital, whispers filled every marketplace. Some spoke of ministers changing sides. Others claimed soldiers had begun disappearing in the night. The Queen Dowager’s name surfaced too often for my liking.Until I was sure of the situation, Julian didn’t need to know where I was. Only that I was safe. “Okay, can you at least tell me why we are here instead of his Highness’s house outside the cap
QUEEN DOWAGER I threw the jade cup I was holding, and it shattered into pieces at the guard’s feet. He dropped to his knees, head bowed deeply. “Who told you to kill people?” he trembled, he was one of men my guards had captured. I wanted to know who had the audacity to go against me. “It was the…”The guard’s eyes suddenly widened. Before I could turn, the whistle of an arrow sliced through the room. thud. The arrow buried itself in his throat. Blood sprayed across the polished floor. His mouth moved once, twice, but no words came.Blood pooled under his head. I watched the dark red circle of blood getting bigger. I tightened my fists; my nails dug into my palm drawing blood. “It is clear that people around here have forgotten who I am.” I slammed my hand hard on the arm rest.“Get in here.” my voice felt foreign even to me, it was like someone else was talking. “Your Majesty.” He gave a bow. “Go, find out what happened.” He straightened. “At once, Your Majesty.” I fixed my eyes on
HELENA The forest felt different when I was alone in it. not emptier. Just honest. Every sound mattered now. every snap of a branch. Every shift in the wind. Every breath I tried to keep steady. There was no one left to decide what I was worth. No one left to watch. Only the path. Only me.I follo
HELENA The silence after his words felt heavier than anything he had said before. I didn’t speak again; there was nothing left to argue with. He had already decided I was something still unfinished and that was somehow worse than being worthless. I needed to leave, get the hell out of there. with
HELENA Sunrays seeped through the cracks in the wooden walls. It didn’t feel like morning. It felt like survival continued. I woke slowly, my body stiff in ways that made every breath feel like a reminder of what had happened. For a moment, I didn’t move. I didn’t think. Just lay there, staring at
HELENAHe was back, panic flared. Should I run? stupid thought. Where would I go? How far could I get with a broken body and no strength? Begging? Maybe that would work. He was alone now. That had to mean something. He had lied for me. Maybe, just maybe he meant to help. I looked up at him, searchi
