Chapter 3

Author: Blessed Wealth
It was Stephanie's birthday party today, and Mom and Dad rushed toward her as soon as they stepped through the door.

Mom wrapped her arms affectionately around Stephanie's shoulders and handed her the property deed to a villa, saying, "Happy birthday, my darling Stephy!"

Dad also smiled and pulled out a diamond bracelet—worth at least several million dollars—and gave it to her.

I stood far off in the shadows of a corner, dressed in my old, faded clothes. Watching the three of them share this picture-perfect family reunion, a bitter realization settled deep in my chest—my presence was just a joke.

As Stephanie hugged Mom back, her eyes swept over the crowd until they landed precisely on me. A mocking grin tugged at the corners of her lips. She leaned in, whispering something into Mom's ear.

Mom followed her gaze. When she finally spotted me lurking in the corner, the radiant smile on her face froze instantly.

A short while later, Mom and Dad walked toward me.

"We will make ourselves clear with you now, Allison. We were never bankrupt. We only wanted to train you and test your resilience so you wouldn't act like a spoiled brat once you started living a life of extravagance.

"We adopted Stephanie after you went missing, and she was the one who grew up by our side in your place. We'll never allow her to suffer or feel pushed aside. Therefore, we are introducing Stephanie to the public as our biological daughter. You'll be introduced as our adopted daughter. Don't you dare expose us."

I looked at their self-righteous, unyielding faces. I made sure my voice was steady, enunciating every single syllable. "But aren't I your biological daughter after all?"

Dad's brow furrowed in deep impatience. "Why must you be so difficult and unreasonable? Stephanie was raised to be poised, elegant, and cultured. You are deaf in one ear and didn't even manage to graduate high school! How could you ever hope to compare to her?"

Mom sighed heavily, patting my shoulder with patronizing condescension, as if comforting a child throwing a tantrum.

"Stop being so stubborn. Do you have any idea how few abducted children ever actually make it back to their parents? You should be grateful that you returned to a family that puts food on your table and a roof over your head. What more could you possibly want from us?"

The back of my scalded hand was still raw, the blisters weeping and bleeding, but neither of them cared. They genuinely believed they had already bestowed the ultimate act of charity upon me just by letting me come home to them.

But they were the ones who had lost me at the amusement park 18 years ago. Everything Stephanie had should have been mine.

I let out a long, slow breath, letting go of the heavy weight in my chest. "I don't need your love anymore."

Dad's face went purple with anger. "You damn ingrate! We spent two years trying to mold you, and you're still the same pathetic, low-class wench you were when we found you!"

Mom pointed a finger directly in my face, her voice rising to a shrill hiss. "Stephy was right. You're just playing hard-to-get, thinking it'll make us feel sorry for you!"

Before she could finish her tirade, a sudden, loud murmur rippled through the room.

I turned around and saw a series of photos come vividly into view on the big screen.

They were the naked photos that Stephanie had forcefully taken of me the night she slipped into my room.

My blood froze at the sight. I opened my mouth to speak, but Stephanie's driver beat me to it and exclaimed loudly, "This bitch is Ms. Coleman's personal maid! She wormed her way into the family's good graces and convinced Mr. and Mrs. Coleman to adopt her!

"She might look innocent, but she's been stealing Ms. Coleman's jewelry behind her back. She even sent me these explicit photos, trying to seduce me into sleeping with her!"

Stephanie walked up to me and spoke in a low voice, "Did you really think you could just stroll back home and become the next Coleman heiress? In your dreams.

"You're just trash that Mom and Dad threw away. You aren't even worthy to lick the dust off my shoes. Get lost if you know what's good for you, Allison Baker."

The guests all shot me nasty, condescending looks. Mom and Dad looked at me with a complex emotion in their eyes, but neither of them uttered a single word to defend me.

I dug my fingernails into my palms so hard the pain went entirely numb.

Then, I walked onto the stage under the shocked gazes of the guests. I said loudly, "I was abducted and gone for 18 years because of my parents' negligence. But since coming back two years ago, all they've done is despise me for being ugly, uneducated, and classless."

I turned to Mom and Dad. "You give Stephanie Coleman a two-million-dollar monthly allowance. Yet you claimed you were too bankrupt to buy me a proper hearing aid.

"But since you refuse to acknowledge me as your flesh and blood anyway, I will gladly grant your wish. I am selling myself to your 'creditors!'"

After saying that, I left the villa without another backward glance and got into the car waiting for me at the entrance.

Panicked, Mom and Dad sprinted out after me, pounding on the car window. "Are you crazy, Allison Baker? We don't have any creditors!

"You damn ingrate! If you dare to leave us now, we'll disown you permanently! You'll be entirely on your own!"

Yet, the bald man who once played their creditor stopped them and said, "Mr. Coleman, Ms. Baker here has already signed an agreement with me. So, from now on, she belongs to me."

I then pulled the hem of my dress away from Claire's grip and turned to leave. Her heart-wrenching cries and Derek's loud howling could still be heard behind me."Allie, please, don't go! I'm begging you, Allie! I'm on my knees!" Claire yelled."Allie, I've let you down. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done what I did. Please come back to us!"I didn't look back.I walked out of the main entrance and felt the night wind blowing, carrying the chill of the early fall weather. I paused at the steps and took a deep breath. There was a car parked under the street light not too far away. The windows rolled down, and Oliver's face appeared behind the glass."I guessed you hadn't had dinner yet." He lifted a takeaway bag, showing the two food containers inside. "So, I brought you some as well."I was stunned. "What are you doing here?"He replied casually, "I was just passing by.""How did you know that I hadn't eaten yet?"He opened his door, got out of the car, and handed me the takea

I didn't attend Stephanie's trial. Instead, Elsie forwarded the official verdict directly to my phone. Stephanie was sentenced to 15 years in prison, stripped of her political rights for three years, and ordered to pay 12 million dollars in civil damages. Three days after the sentencing, Derek and Claire came looking for me again. This time, however, they didn't attempt to force their way upstairs. They simply waited in the lobby. When the security desk called to inform me of their presence, I was in the middle of reviewing the itinerary for next week's charity event with Oliver. The guard's voice sounded hesitant over the line. "Ms. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman are here again, insisting on a meeting. They said they'll wait indefinitely if you refuse to see them." I went silent for a while."Let them wait."After I hung up, I noticed Oliver watching me quietly; he didn't pry. Instead, he smoothly steered our conversation back to the charity project, spending another hour metic

I first met Oliver Blackwell at a charity gala.It was an annual event sponsored by Bloomberg Group to raise funds for hearing-impaired children in impoverished regions. Dad had specifically requested that I spearhead the project because nobody understood the pain of being deaf more than I did. The organizer then led me to someone for introductions. "Ms. Baker, this is Mr. Oliver Blackwell, CEO of Blackwell Group. He just returned from abroad this year and is currently managing their real estate division in the Southeast Islands."I looked up and saw a pair of deep eyes.Oliver's eyes were deep as well. "It's an honor to meet you, Ms. Baker."I shook his outstretched hand. "The honor is mine."While we were chatting later, he suddenly said, "Actually, I used to wear a hearing aid when I was little too."I got terribly sick when I was five, and my left ear was severely compromised. I had to wear an aid for three years before I finally regained full function."I blinked, looki

One afternoon, I was reviewing quarterly financial reports in my office when my assistant, Elsie Summers, knocked and pushed the door open. "Ms. Baker, something major just broke. Last night, Ms. Stephanie Coleman was driving under the influence, ran a red light, and plowed into 14 people at the intersection on Eastside Road."I took the iPad from her and scanned the breaking news headline. "Heiress Kills 3, Injures 11 in Drunk-Driving Horror."The accompanying photo was of the accident scene. A mangled Porsche Cayenne sat crumpled in the center of the intersection, the asphalt littered with shattered glass and heavy bloodstains. Elsie hesitated for a moment before adding, "Word is the Coleman family is frantically pulling strings behind the scenes, trying to bury the incident."I turned my attention back to the reports, my voice entirely different. "Three dead, eleven injured, and the entire internet is watching. Who would dare to cover this up for them?"Early the next morn

"Joe Bloomberg is my father in the legal sense. The adoption paperwork was finalized three years ago. Would you like to see the notarized documents as well?" I asked Derek. "From that day onward, neither you nor Claire had any right to call yourselves my parents."Claire's lips trembled violently. Her voice shook as she demanded, "How dare you call someone else your father? You are our daughter! Our blood flows in your veins!"I tilted my head, studying her calmly. "But three years ago, you personally announced to the world that I was just an adopted orphan, and that Stephanie was your only biological daughter. There were plenty of witnesses who could testify to it."Claire's face flushed a deep crimson before turning deathly pale again. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. Derek took a step forward, his hostile demeanor vanishing in an instant. Suddenly, his tone shifted into something sickeningly sycophantic. "Allie, your mom didn't mean what she said back then. Don't ta

The entire hall fell dead silent the moment the spotlights shone down on me.As I walked onto the stage, Joe gently rested a hand on my shoulder, giving me a profound sense of security I had never experienced before. "From this day forward, Ms. Allison Baker will assume the position of CEO of Bloomberg Group, taking full responsibility for all subsidiaries under our banner," Joe announced. "Furthermore, I am officially transferring my entire 61% controlling stake to her name."The room erupted in shocked gasps and frantic murmurs. A 61% controlling stake meant the absolute keys to the kingdom—the sum total of all the wealth Joe had built over the last 30 years. Standing on the stage, my gaze swept across the crowd until it locked onto three frozen figures standing in the corner. Derek's phone slipped from his hand, but he didn't even notice. Claire covered her mouth, her eyes wide with sheer disbelief as the color drained completely from her face. Between them stood Stephan
