Chapter 2

Author: Iced Chocolate
At that moment, I hesitated.

I had completed so many missions, but Audrey was the very first target who had ever made my heart skip a beat.

After turning it over in my mind, I decided to stay.

Back in the real world, I was just an orphan with no family to call my own anyway, so it made more sense to remain here and build a life with Audrey.

At first, things were genuinely peaceful and sweet between us. But everything changed after my twin brother, Owen, who had been abducted years ago, was found and brought home.

Owen came back into our lives shortly after Audrey and I got married.

Faced with the son they thought they had lost forever, Mom and Dad broke down in tears of absolute joy. No matter what Owen said or did, they believed him and gave him anything he wanted.

I could understand my parents' reaction.

For some reason, though, Audrey started growing incredibly close to Owen as well. I remembered seeing Owen whispering something to her one day, and that very night, she uncharacteristically drank herself into a total stupor.

Once she sobered up, her entire attitude toward me shifted, and she became increasingly distant and cold. I tried asking her what was wrong, but she always brushed it off.

Fortunately, Audrey got pregnant not long after that and gave birth to our son, Ethan Winslow.

The arrival of our baby finally eased the tension between us, and I poured every ounce of love I had into Ethan.

When he was little, Ethan looked at me like I was the center of his universe, his protector and the rock he could always lean on.

As he grew older, though, he inexplicably started gravitating toward Owen, too. He was constantly talking about how cool Owen's tattoos were, insisting he wanted to get inked just like him when he grew up.

I didn't know what Owen had gone through during all those years he was missing, but my gut told me to keep Ethan far away from him.

But the harder I tried to shield him, the more Ethan resented me for it.

At the time, I just chalked it up to a kid going through a rebellious phase. That was until Ethan's birthday party.

I came home with his favorite cake, only to stop at the front door when I saw him introducing his family to his classmates.

With a massive, proud grin on his face, he pointed at Owen and said, "This is my dad. Pretty cool, right? Don't you think he looks perfect with my mom?"

In that instant, my blood ran cold, and I realized that my entire reason for staying in this world had become an absolute joke.

Just look at me now, lying in the ICU with nobody coming to check on me.

I could feel my soul slowly pulling away from my body, and I sighed.

This was never my actual body to begin with, and I should've never let myself crave that fleeting taste of warmth.

Growing up in an orphanage, I had spent my whole life dreaming of having a mother, a father, a brother, and a wife who truly loved me.

In the end, that was the exact thing that walked me right into a dead end.

"Where's Uncle Owen? Is he okay?"

Through the haze, I heard Ethan's voice.

"Ethan, your Uncle Owen is going to be just fine," a nurse said.

She knew our family and told him, "It's actually your dad who's in trouble."

Hearing those words, Ethan let out a massive sigh of relief, a bright grin spreading across his face. "Oh, so Dad's the one who's sick! That's awesome. I'm just glad Uncle Owen is okay!"

The young nurse seemed to think he was just too little to understand what was actually happening, because she tried to guide him toward the ICU to come see me.

Ethan yanked his hand out of her grip, his face tightening with annoyance.

"I don't want to see him! It'd be better if he died! If he's gone, I can finally have Uncle Owen be my dad. Uncle Owen is actually cool, and he actually loves me. I'm going to see him instead!" said Ethan.

Floating in midair, my soul stared down at him in disbelief.

Was this the boy I had given every single ounce of my love to since the day he was born?

I was nothing more than a spirit now, so why did my chest still ache this terribly?

A wave of crushing sadness washed over me as my soul completely broke free from my body. Next to my body, the heart monitor emitted a piercing, continuous whine.

"N-No… What are you talking about? I don't know anything! It hurts! Mom, Dad, Audrey's gone crazy! You've got to help me!"Owen frantically looked toward our parents for help, but Mom and Dad didn't even seem to hear him. The two of them were focused on their own phone calls, their expressions tense."What? Are you sure? It's really the same person from back then?"The guests sensed that a new piece of drama was unfolding, and the entire chapel fell completely silent as everyone waited for my parents to speak.Suddenly, Mom looked over at Owen, let out a gut-wrenching cry, and sprinted across the room to slap him square across the face."What did we do to deserve this? How did we raise such a monster?" she screamed. "If you didn't like your brother, you could've just told us! You were only 13 years old! How could you be so cruel as to cut a deal with a human trafficker and sell your own brother out?"I froze for a moment, but deep down, the revelation didn't shock me at all.It

The woman had clearly come prepared. Ignoring the pain, she pulled a stack of photos from her pocket and flung them into the air."Take a look at this!" she cried. "These are all the photos of your husband and me in compromising positions. In fact, I was even pregnant with his child. If you don't believe me, go ahead and look for yourselves! See what your husband was really doing!"I glanced at the photos scattered across the floor, which clearly depicted intimate and compromising situations. The problem was that the person in the pictures wasn't me. Someone had swapped my face onto another man's body. The guests completely forgot they were at a funeral, rushing to pick up the photos and get a piece of the gossip."Oh, my… Everyone always said Dr. Hayes' husband was hopelessly in love with her. How could he do something like this behind her back?""Hank is such a respectable guy. It's a shame his younger son turned out like this. I heard one of his sons was kidnapped as a kid and

My spirit just stayed there, silently watching Owen slump onto the floor. He sat there in a daze for a few seconds. But then, he suddenly stood straight up and kicked his crutches to the side. From the way he walked, there was clearly nothing wrong with him.He had been faking it the entire time.If it hadn't been for him, I wouldn't have missed my first opportunity to be rescued."Damn you, Noah! I managed to kill you, and now I'm going to make sure you stay buried." Owen frowned, glaring at the hallway where the gurney had just disappeared.…My funeral was set for three days later. During that time, Owen shifted his strategy. He stopped running his mouth and trash-talking me. Instead, he grieved and cried right along with the other four.He even played the part of the perfect, doting older brother, standing in front of my casket to pray for my soul.Whenever things quieted down, he did everything he could to distract them and lift their spirits.Sure enough, aside from the

Essentially, I had set myself up as Audrey's savior to sweep her off her feet and marry her.No wonder she had spent our entire marriage hating my guts and making snide remarks, constantly accusing me of faking life-or-death situations just to trick her into staying with me.But when it came down to it, neither Audrey nor my parents had ever trusted me.If they had just come forward, laid their cards on the table, and asked me face-to-face, things might have been different. But not a single one of them ever did.Watching Audrey break down like this made Mom panic. Shaking like a leaf, she shuffled closer and tentatively reached out to feel my hand, only for the ice-cold skin to make her shriek in horror."Noah! Noah, stop scaring me. Why are your hands so cold?" Mom screamed, her voice dissolving into uncontrollable sobs.Seeing Mom's reaction, Dad quickly rushed over to check on me, too. He steeled himself to press a finger to my neck, checking for a pulse. The second he reali

Ethan was young, but he wasn't stupid. The way Audrey and I looked completely terrified him.He froze, staring blankly for a few seconds, before suddenly bursting into loud, hysterical sobs and running over to grip my hand tightly."Dad! Dad, wake up! Please, I want you to make that pot roast again!"I watched everything unfold in silence. My stone-cold heart was far past the point of feeling a single spark of emotion.Right on cue, the mechanical chime rang in my mind."Congratulations, Host. They've started crying for you, and their regret meter has risen to 20%. It looks like you'll hit your target in no time."I shook my head, not holding out much hope.Ethan was only reacting out of pure fright. The second Owen came over to comfort him, Ethan would completely forget about me. It looked like I was never going to get the chance to return to the real world after all."Audrey, what's taking you so long? What kind of stunt is he pulling this time?"Mom and Dad walked in righ

The doctor's words stunned the room into silence."What do you mean he's dead?" Audrey finally asked, her voice flat as she broke the eerie quiet."Look, Dr. Hayes, I'm a busy woman. I chose to track you down myself because he's your husband. But you need to go see for yourself."Without waiting for an answer, the doctor turned on her heel and sprinted back to her shift."Audrey, this has to be another one of Noah's stunts," Owen chimed in, unable to hide the smug gleam in his eyes despite putting on his best sympathetic face as he talked Audrey down."He's probably just throwing a tantrum because Mom and Dad are treating me so well. He used to pull pointless crap like this all the time, so who knows what he's up to this time—"But Audrey's face had paled, and she shot to her feet.Ignoring Owen completely, she dropped the half-peeled apple from her hands and stormed out of the room."She's lying," she muttered to herself as she sprinted down the hallway to find me.
