Chapter Three

Damien does not move for a full minute after she leaves.

He stands behind his desk, hand flat on the surface, eyes on the door she just walked through. Her scent is still in the room. Warm and clean with something underneath it, like rain on dry ground, like something the earth makes when it finally gets what it has been waiting for.

He has not felt this in six years.

He was not supposed to feel it ever again.

His brother's voice comes through the intercom on his desk. "Damien. Board call in ten."

He does not answer. He picks up the glass of water on his desk and drinks the whole thing in one go. Then he sets it down very carefully, the way a man does when he is trying hard not to break something.

Zara Mensah.

He had read her file twice before she walked in. Business license, client list, reviews, the court of public opinion that existed online. Small operation, big reputation. The kind of woman who built things with her hands and her mind and refused to let anyone tell her the ceiling was lower than she thought.

He had expected someone impressive.

He had not expected the bond to snap into place the second she crossed his threshold.

The mate bond. Ancient and absolute and completely unwelcome at this particular moment in his life.

He closes his eyes.

She cannot know. Not yet. Maybe not ever, if he handles this carefully.

His jaw tightens.

He offered her the contract because she would have walked out of this building and he would never have had a reason to see her again. The thought was unbearable in a way he does not have language for. So he did the only logical thing.

He manufactured a reason.

He turns back to the window. Atlanta spreads out below him, grey and gold and moving. He watches it and tries to think like a CEO instead of like what he actually is.

The intercom crackles again. "Damien."

"I heard you," he says. "Give me five minutes."

He runs a hand through his hair, which he never does. He straightens his jacket, which he does not need to. He does the small, useless things a man does when his whole world just tilted and he needs to pretend it did not.

Five minutes. Then he will be the CEO again.

He can feel her. Even now, three floors down and moving toward the lobby exit, he can feel the faint pull of the bond like a thread tied to his sternum.

He is not going to pull it.

He is absolutely not going to pull it.

Nadia picks up on the second ring, which means she was already holding the phone.

"How did it go? Did he try to lowball you? Tell me he did not try to lowball you. I practiced your speech in the shower this morning and I need it to have been useful."

Zara is in her car in the parking structure, engine running, going nowhere.

"He gave me everything," she says.

Silence.

"He what?"

"He reinstated the contract. Said the cancellation was an internal error. Then he offered me a twelve-month exclusive deal with the whole company."

More silence. Then:

"Zara. That is six figures."

"I know."

"That is life-changing money."

"I know, Nadia."

"So why do you sound like someone who just got hit by a slow-moving car?"

Zara looks at her hand on the steering wheel. The same hand he shook. She pulls it off the wheel and puts it in her lap.

"Something felt off," she says. "He is a CEO. He does not personally handle complaints from small vendors. He does not just hand over year-long contracts in a ten-minute meeting with no negotiation."

"Maybe he liked you," Nadia says, and Zara can hear the smile in it.

"That is not funny."

"It is a little funny. Also possibly true. Was he cute?"

Zara thinks about the way he turned from the window. The eyes. The stillness. The way the room felt smaller and somehow safer the moment he looked at her.

"That is not relevant," she says.

"That is a yes."

"I am hanging up."

"Zara, come on. Take the win. You went in there to save one event and you came out with a year of work. Stop looking for the trap."

She wants to. She really does.

"I will call you later," she says, and ends the call.

She sits in the quiet of the parking structure for another minute. Outside she can hear the city moving. Taxis and foot traffic and someone somewhere playing music too loud from a window.

She pulls up the WolfeGroup website on her phone. Finds the about page. Finds the leadership section.

No photo of Damien Wolfe. Just his name and his title.

She types his name into a search bar again, properly this time, not the quick skim she did yesterday. There are articles going back eight years. A company he built from one real estate firm in New York. Acquisitions across hospitality, manufacturing, private equity. A net worth that has seven digits more than she is comfortable thinking about.

And then, buried in a business journal article from four years ago, one sentence that makes her pause.

"WolfeGroup CEO Damien Wolfe is known in industry circles as a man who never acts without a reason. In fifteen years of business, no deal he has initiated has been anything other than precisely calculated."

She reads it twice.

Precisely calculated.

She thinks about the way he watched her walk to the chair. The way he already had her contract printed and marked up before she arrived. The way his answer about why he took the meeting personally was smooth and reasonable and somehow told her nothing at all.

She thinks about the contract in her email inbox right now. Year-long. Exclusive. More money than her business has made in two years combined.

She should take it. It is a good deal. Any sane person would take it.

She puts her phone down and pulls out of the parking space.

She is going to take it.

She is absolutely going to take it.

She just wants to know what he actually wants first.

Marcus is waiting in Damien's office when he gets off the board call.

He is sitting in one of the chairs across from the desk with his feet up and an apple in his hand, which means he has been there long enough to raid the kitchen down the hall.

"She signed?" Marcus asks.

"Not yet."

"But she will?"

Damien sits behind his desk and opens his laptop.

"Yes."

Marcus takes a bite of the apple and chews it thoughtfully. He has the same dark eyes as Damien, the same jaw. He uses his face differently though. Marcus has never seen a reason to keep his expressions locked away.

"The council called while you were on your board call," he says. "Adaeze wants a meeting. This week."

Damien does not look up from the laptop.

"Schedule it for Friday."

"She is going to ask about succession again."

"I know."

"She is going to ask about a mate."

Damien closes the laptop. Slowly. Looks at his brother.

Marcus is watching him with an expression that is careful and knowing and just a little bit worried.

"You felt something today," Marcus says. It is not a question.

The room is very quiet.

"Drop it," Damien says.

"Damien..."

"Drop it, Marcus."

His brother is quiet for a moment. Then he takes another bite of his apple and looks at the window.

"She is human," he says, lightly, like it is just a fact and not a grenade.

"I said drop it."

Marcus stands. Tosses the apple core in the bin by the door.

"Friday it is," he says. "Try to sleep before then. You look terrible."

He leaves.

Damien turns his chair to face the window again.

She is human.

He knows that. He has known it since she walked through the door. The bond does not care about logistics. The bond does not care about council votes or pack politics or the fact that the last person he started to care about ended up in the ground while he stood there and could not stop it.

The bond just pulls.

He presses two fingers to the center of his chest where the feeling sits, warm and stubborn and completely uninvited.

He has until Friday to figure out what he is going to do about all of it.

  • THE ALPHA'S RELUCTANT BRIDE    Blood and Evidence

Chapter 33The council hall fell silent the moment Zara’s aunt stepped forward. The woman looked older than Zara remembered. Lines around her eyes. Tension in her shoulders. She avoided Zara’s gaze at first.Victor stood beside her like a man who had already won.“Council members,” he began, voice smooth and carrying. “We are here to decide if Damien Wolfe remains fit to lead. I bring proof that his instincts have been compromised. Not just by a human mate. By a human mate whose blood carries the mark of an old enemy.”He gestured to the aunt. “This is Lena Mensah. Sister to Zara’s mother. She has lived in hiding for twenty years because Damien’s pack destroyed her family line. Now the alpha brings that blood back into our midst and calls it fate. I call it a threat.”Murmurs rippled through the room. Several older wolves leaned forward.Lena spoke next. Her voice shook at first. “My sister ran. She hid what she was. She married a human and raised a child who carries the same diluted

  • THE ALPHA'S RELUCTANT BRIDE     Bloodlines

Chapter 32Zara stood very still in the small side room. The words Adaeze had spoken hung between them like smoke.“My mother was not fully human,” she repeated slowly. “She carried wolf blood from a line Victor’s pack destroyed.”Adaeze nodded once. “A small pack that lived on the edge of Victor’s territory twenty years ago. They refused to merge. His father ordered the elimination. Your mother escaped because she was visiting family in another state. She never told you. She never told anyone. She married a human man and tried to bury it.”Zara’s mind raced through every memory of her mother. The way she had avoided certain topics. The quiet strength that had always felt slightly different. “Why tell me now?”“Because Victor found the records last month. He has been waiting for the perfect moment to use them. Tonight he plans to stand in front of the council and declare that you are not a human mate. You are a survivor of a wiped out bloodline returning to weaken us from within. Some

  • THE ALPHA'S RELUCTANT BRIDE    The Line We Cross

Chapter 31The afternoon light slanted across the penthouse floor. Zara stood by the window in the dress she had chosen for the council meeting. Simple. Dark. Armor without looking like it.Damien watched her from across the room. “You do not have to come.”“I already decided. Hiding gives Victor the story he wants. Me standing beside you gives the council something else to see.”He crossed to her. “If this goes wrong tonight they will come after you harder than before. Some of them already believe a human mate weakens the bloodline.”“Then we show them it strengthens it instead.” She turned to face him. “I am not Elena. I will not die in a rival attack while you are off settling pack business. I am here because I chose to be. That is the difference.”Damien’s jaw tightened. “I failed her. I will not fail you.”“You did not fail her. You were doing what the pack asked. The same way you have done everything since. But I am not asking you to choose between me and them. I am asking you t

  • THE ALPHA'S RELUCTANT BRIDE    The Text at Dawn

Chapter 30Zara woke to sunlight cutting across the bed. For the first time in weeks her body did not feel braced for the next blow. She reached for her phone out of habit. The message from the unknown number waited on the screen. You should have stayed away from him. Now the whole pack will pay for your choice. The vote is only the beginning. She sat up fast. The words hit like cold water. She found Damien in the kitchen pouring coffee. He had changed into a black shirt and dark jeans. The couch looked like it had been slept on but not comfortably.“Victor sent this last night,” she said and handed him the phone.Damien read it once. His expression did not change but the air in the room shifted. “He is getting desperate. Good.”“Good? He is threatening your pack and me.”“He is showing his hand early. That means he knows the edited video alone will not be enough to remove me.” Damien set the phone down. “We use that.”Zara poured herself coffee even though her stomach felt tight. “Wh

  • THE ALPHA'S RELUCTANT BRIDE    Close Enough to Break

Chapter 29The penthouse doors opened to a space that felt too big and too quiet. Floor to ceiling windows showed the city lights below. Damien stepped in first and disabled the extra security panel by the door.Zara stopped in the middle of the living room. “I did not agree to be moved here like some package that needs protecting.”“You are here because Victor already had someone follow you and break into your office,” Damien said. “The next step will be worse. This building has layers of security the pack controls. Your apartment does not.”She turned to face him. “I came here to talk to you. Not to be locked in a tower while you handle everything alone again.”“You are not locked in. You are safe. There is a difference.”“Not when you decide it without asking me.” Her voice rose. “I spent two days going through those documents because I needed to know the truth for myself. I will not trade one kind of control for another.”Damien ran a hand over his face. For the first time since s

  • THE ALPHA'S RELUCTANT BRIDE     No Turning Back

He had aimed at the one place Damien could not ignore. She shoved the phone into her bag with the envelope of documents and locked the door. She was done hiding. Damien deserved the truth from her lips, not a screen. She needed to say she believed him. That she was sorry. The rideshare arrived fast. She slid in and gave the driver the address for Damien’s building. Two blocks later a dark sedan pulled out behind them. It matched their turns. Stayed three cars back but never lost them.Zara’s stomach tightened. “Take the long way,” she told the driver. He glanced in the mirror but changed lanes without questions. The sedan followed. She called Damien.
