“I would like to see her,” Olga insisted, “I have been looking for a new slave myself to help with keeping up the spirits in my parties.” I maintained the smile on my face, trying not to upset her, “then we shall send a call for slaves in the pack,” I said easily, guiding my wife away from Maisie’s door, “someone fitting for my Luna.” Olga laughed. It was a soft delicate laugh. “You are very nice, Keith,” she spoke warmly, her voice so soft that one could mistake her for a saint. “I would do anything for you, dear,” I said, “you know that, right?” She stopped walking suddenly and spun to face me directly, “I’ve always wondered if you could ever get over your first love.” Her voice sounded so sad that someone could mistake her tone for pitiful. But I was not fooled. I knew more than anyone that Olga, while she carried herself with the grace of a Luna, did not in fact have much in the way of empathy. But it did not matter, our marriage was one done out of convenience and not personal feelings. The security her marriage afforded me had expanded my pack almost twice its previous size. So I smiled and looked into her eyes like only she mattered in the world, “None of that matters anymore, does it?” She let out a soft breath and heaved her shoulders, “but I do worry.” I raised an eyebrow, “Whatever for, dear?” “I have nightmares when she returns to the palace determined to seek revenge against me.” “Nonsense, my love! Nonsense!” “Are you saying that you will kill her if she somehow sets foot in here again?” My blood ran cold. She wanted me to kill Maisie? Surely she knew that was an absurd request. “Why would I kill her?” I asked coolly. Olga frowned to show her displeasure with my answer. “I am worried for my safety, Keith,” she said, with a look of concern on her face. “You must not worry about such things,” I said, kissing her on her forehead, “even if Maisie does return she is no match for you. She never was.” Every bit of that sentence was true. It was true because Maisie had always been superior to everyone else. She was stronger and far more beautiful. She was resilient and unfortunately would always remain the woman who had my heart forever. “Then promise me,” Olga swept my hand in hers, “that you will never let her return here.” “It is the only way that I will not worry.” “You are my wife and in a few weeks you shall be my Luna,” I was very careful in choosing my words, “even if Maisie suddenly appeared it would not change that.” “Do you still love her then?” she asked me. I looked at her and wondered why such a beautiful woman would be so insecure. “It is very late, my dear,” I said to her, “we must go to bed now.” I placed her arm in mine and walked away with her on my arm. “You are avoiding the question, Keith,” she was not happy, “why would you…” “Then I must ask you the same,” I replied to her, “do you love me?” She stepped in front of me, effectively preventing me from moving forward, “I do.” “Our marriage is…” “...for convenience. I know that. But it does not mean that we cannot love each other.” “Olga…” “Come to me tonight,” she said to me softly, “and I will make you forget about her.” But how could Olga prove successful in doing that when Maisie was within my reach? “I want to make love to you, Keith.” She pulled me in her arms, leaning forward to kiss me, but my instincts held me back. Somehow my body knew that she was not the woman in whose arms I wanted to retire tonight. “What’s wrong?” she asked softly as her lips hovered over mine, seeking an entrance. “It is very late,” I said, “and I am very tired.” She sighed. “We must consummate our marriage at some point,” she said, “it is our duty after all to provide the pack with suitable heirs.” “I know that,” came my tired response, “I am just tired tonight.” “And I still have some pack business that I must tend to,” I added. But the truth was that I had always dreaded this part of our arranged marriage. I did not know how to make love to a woman that I did not love. My body had belonged to Maisie for the longest time, and in the five years that she had left me my body had resigned to not having anyone to lie with. Olga stroked my brow, “You are always so busy. Why don’t you take the day off, huh? You are the Alpha after all, you should be able to do that much.” She was right about that. I was the Alpha and giving myself a vacation should not be so difficult, but I would do anything to put off our consummation. “No,” I refused, and seeing that my rejection had hurt her, I quickly added, “our first time must be special.” “I do not need such things,” she said. “I do not want us to make love just because duty demands it,” I said, “I must plan this well for you, my love.” Under the dim light of the moon, I could see her blush. I had masterfully avoided a major conflict with Olga. “But we must do it soon,” she said to me, “or the court will begin to whisper about your impotence or my barrenness. We cannot have either.” “We can simply behead wagging tongues,” I replied to her in jest. She chuckled. “You are right of course!” As we approached the main house, Olga suddenly stopped. “My scarf!” she raised her voice with slight panic. “What? What scarf?” I asked. She sighed, “It must have fallen off in front of the outhouse. I must go to recover it.” And very quickly, she began walking towards Maisie.Olga “He travelled to the Eastern border?” I was filled with mild surprise, “Why would he go there?” “He travelled with his Beta and… and the new slave.” My eyes narrowed in on Melody who stood shivering in front of me. “Maisie?” I scoffed, “he travelled with her?” I laughed out loud, my voice ringing with bitterness. “Did she take her son?” I asked. “No,” came the response I longed to hear. Finally, there was some good news. Maisie's arrival and her son's had given me a throbbing headache. But if I could take care of one now, I would only have the other to deal with. “Take me to him,” I said, almost laughing with excitement. I would end the poor boy's pathetic life. No child born outside my womb would be a hindrance to my children. I had none now but I had to make sure that when I did have children, their ascension to power would go uncontested. “Yes, princess.” Melody and I walked through the large hallways filled with beautiful paintings. Keith was quite obsessed with a
MaisieI sat quietly beside Keith in his car. I did not like that his scent permeated the air around us, soaking into everything around us. It filled me with a strange desire, one that I thought I had killed after leaving the pack and taking my chances in the human realm. “If you wish,” Keith broke the silence between us, “you can have your son stay in the human realm with his father.” I was quiet. I said nothing because there was nothing to say. I could not do anything about telling Keith that Lance was in fact his son. I was not sure how he would even react to such news at all. He would resent me more than he did now. Running away was one thing, but running away with his heir was quite another. “I am trying to be nice here,” he said when I remained quiet. I turned to face him sharply, “Nice?” “You turned me into a slave…” “You left me, Maisie!” he retorted back sharply. “And what?” I asked, almost tearful, “Your sick ego cannot handle the fact that I stopped loving you?” “
Keith“It’s not funny,” I was seated in my study the next day going over some documents with Cassian. But Cassian was not so forgiving when it came to letting go. He had taken every opportunity he could get from yesterday to bring up the fact that I had fainted. “It is,” he said, “and it will continue to be funny for a long time,” he laughed again, “What were you thinking…” “If you laugh again, I’ll frame it as treason,” I said, my face serious. That did not help at all. Cassian doubled over and laughed in my face even harder. “This is funny until it happens to you,” I groaned. “Fine,” He raised his hands in the air, “I’ll stop.” I looked at his face and saw the corners of his lips struggling to stay put. I folded my hands together and said to him,” Fine. Just laugh.” And he did. He was almost rolling on the floor at this point. It took a while before he could recover from laughing, “I think I’m all laughed out now.” “Can we concentrate now?” I asked him, “or do you need more t
Keith I watched the nurse shiver in fear on her knees. “Spare my life, Alpha,” she cried, holding her hands together as if in a prayer.“What were you promised?” I asked her. My voice was calm. I found that I was angry but not at her. I knew that she was not the problem. She may have poisoned Maisie, stabbed her with an injection, but she was not the director of this script. Instead of answering my question, the nurse sprawled on the floor and held my leg and continued her plea for my mercy. But she should have known that those who offended me seldom testified to my kind heart.“Your only chance of surviving this is if you start talking,” I simply stated. “I would rather die by your hands,” was her response. That was interesting. She was scared of me, but this other person seemed to terrify her at a whole new height. “Why? Do they have your family?” I asked her. She was quiet. Cassian burst into the room then, “Should I take her back to the pack house?” he asked me. I thought
Olga“What is impossible about that?” Keith asked me, staring intently at my face and waiting for me to answer. I hated that I had lost my calm composed look. Now, I looked like I was guilty of something and I hated it. So I did the only thing I could think of to get out of this situation. I fell on the floor, faking a fainting spell. “Olga?” Keith lightly shook my body on the floor, but I kept up the pretense. This was the only way I could survive. I felt Keith’s strong arms carry me. I was placed in a bed and then abandoned. I heard footsteps walk away from me. I opened my eyes a little bit and I confirmed the worst. Keith and Cassian were walking away from me like I had not just fainted. It appeared that neither of them cared at all what happened to me. But it was too late for me to call off my pretense now. I would have to stick to closing my eyes for a few minutes. ‘That’s why you should never pretend!’ my usually quiet wolf decided to speak up. ‘Oh, shut up!’ I cursed at h
Keith “I will be the judge of that!” I yelled at Reuben. “Keith?” I saw Cassian walking towards us, “I just watched the footage. The cameras were blank during the time that she was poisoned. There is no way of knowing who did this.” I was welling up with anger inside and there was no one to take it out on. I wanted to scream at someone, at something, and yet the person responsible for my anger remained hidden. Reuben excused himself, scurrying off like a frightened bunny. I was left with Cassian, who put his hand on my shoulder in comfort. “We'll find this person,” he said softly. “It's just going to take some time.”“Do you think this was Olga?” I asked him. He seemed to think about this for a minute. “Maybe,” he finally said, “if it is, what will you do?” I could do nothing. That was the bitter truth. I could do all the talking I wanted, but Maisie was a slave. Her status in the pack would make it impossible to defend her. And I was not going to change that for any reason. Sh
Maisie I threw my body in front of Lance as Beta Cassian’s sword bore down on him. The sword cut through my clothes and sliced the skin of my stomach. I winced in pain as I covered my son with my body, shielding him from Keith's terrifying gaze. “What?” Keith sneered, “You'll die protecting your
Keith The fear in her eyes should have satisfied me. I was meant to take satisfaction in the fact that I was finally getting my revenge. I would kill her and avenge myself, our love, everything we had ever been, we could have been, I would end it all by snuffing the life out of her. After nine y
Maisie“Look at the time you’re coming in!” my boss, Silver Cross, shouted at me so loudly that his spit landed on my face. The action irked me, but I had to remind myself that I was in the human world and this human was my boss. Even though I had enough strength as a werewolf to rip him to shreds,
Keith“You must return to the pack house, Keith,” Cassian said, looking around at the small space I had been holed up in for the past couple of days. His eyes carried his displeasure with my new living arrangement. “Maisie has to get better,” I said, “I can’t leave her here all alone.” Then I loo
