Chloe Bennett agrees to become a surrogate for billionaire CEO Damian King, expecting nothing more than a business arrangement. But when his fiancée abandons him and Chloe discovers she's carrying twins, Damian proposes a temporary marriage to protect his reputation. Living under the same roof begins to blur the lines between contract and reality. As family betrayals, jealous rivals, and painful secrets threaten to tear them apart, Chloe must decide whether she can trust the man who once saw her as a solution to his problem. CHAPTER 1: the contract

Chloe balanced the tray of fresh croissants on one hip and snatched her ringing phone off the counter with her free hand. Flour puffed into the air as she wiped her palm on her apron.

Her apron hugged the generous curves she had long since stopped trying to hide. The heat from the ovens clung to her skin, and a loose curl had escaped the messy bun piled on top of her head. Customers had spent years offering unsolicited diet tips along with compliments about her pastries, as though baking for a living and living in a plus-size body couldn't possibly exist together. Chloe had learned to smile, thank them for their purchase, and keep living her life. This bakery had been built by these hands, and she was proud of every inch of it.

“Sarah, I’m slammed right now. What’s so important it can’t wait ten minutes?”

Her best friend’s voice burst through, bright and way too excited for a Tuesday morning. “Chloe, remember how you said you want a baby but not a husband? I found the perfect guy. His fiancée wants a surrogate, and they’ll both give you full access to the kid after. No marriage, just co-parenting. You have to meet him today.”

Chloe nearly dropped the tray. She set it down hard on the glass case, ignoring the customer waving for service at the register. “Today? Sarah, I’m covered in dough. I can’t just…”

“You can and you will. His name is Damian King, His office is twenty minutes from the bakery, I already told him you might come by at eleven.

This is it, Chloe. Clean deal. You get your baby, they get their heir. No strings.”

Chloe’s grip tightened on the phone until her knuckles ached. She glanced around the busy bakery, two baristas scrambling, the morning rush still thick. Part of her wanted to hang up and pretend this conversation never happened. The other part, the one that had spent too many nights staring at the empty apartment above the shop, whispered that this could actually work.

“Fine,” she said. “Text me the address. But if this guy is weird, I’m out.”

Two hours later, Chloe stood in the gleaming lobby of King Enterprises, tugging at the hem of her best black blouse.

She smoothed the fabric over her stomach before catching herself. It wasn't vanity. It was habit. Years of walking into rooms where people judged her size before hearing her name had taught her to make herself presentable twice over. She lifted her chin anyway. If Damian King expected perfection, he was about to meet a woman who had stopped apologizing for taking up space.

The elevator doors opened on the top floor with a soft ding. A sharply dressed assistant led her straight into a corner office that looked like it belonged in a magazine.

Damian King didn’t stand up right away, He sat behind a massive desk, typing something on his laptop, his broad shoulders filling out a tailored charcoal suit. When he finally looked up, his gray eyes scanned her from head to toe in one cool sweep.

Chloe braced herself for the familiar flicker she'd seen too many times before—the quick calculation, the barely concealed disappointment, the silent suggestion that she would have been prettier if she were smaller. Instead, his expression remained unreadable, almost clinical. Somehow, that unsettled her even more.

“You’re Chloe Bennett,” he said. His voice was deep, clipped, like every word had been measured twice. “Sit.”

She stayed standing. “Most people start with hello.”

He raised an eyebrow but didn’t smile. “Vanessa and I need a surrogate and You want a child without marriage, “let's make it work” We both get access after birth, This is a clean transaction, The contract is already drawn up by my lawyers. Standard terms, generous compensation.”

Chloe lowered herself into the leather chair across from him, her thighs pressing against the cool material.

For a fleeting second, an old insecurity whispered that she took up too much space. The thought irritated her as quickly as it came. She owned a successful bakery, paid her bills, and had built a life without relying on anyone. The size of the chair—or her body—had nothing to do with her worth.

She folded her hands in her lap to stop them from fidgeting. “You make it sound like buying groceries, This is a baby we’re talking about.”

“A baby with specific requirements,” he corrected.

He slid a thick folder across the desk. “Full medical coverage. You live your life normally until the third trimester, then we arrange monitoring.

After delivery, shared custody, No surprises.”

She opened the folder and scanned the first page.

The numbers jumped out, enough money to expand her bakery twice over. Enough to feel secure for the first time in years. Still, something about the way he watched her, detached and calculating, made her jaw tighten.

“I’m not signing anything until I understand the rules,” she said, meeting his gaze. “And I don’t like the way you’re talking to me. This isn’t a boardroom deal. It’s my body, my future kid.”

Damian leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. “Emotions only complicate things, I prefer clarity, You need this as much as we do, Your friend made that clear.”

Chloe’s cheeks burned. She hated that Sarah had shared so much, Hated even more how right he was, Two exes had laughed at her dreams of motherhood without a ring. One had called her “too much to handle” while breaking up over text.

Another had spent months insisting they would "start a healthier lifestyle together," as if loving her depended on shrinking her first. He'd admired her in private but hesitated to introduce her to friends, always finding excuses. Those relationships had left bruises no one could see, teaching her that some people could desire a plus-size woman behind closed doors while refusing to choose her in the light. Chloe had promised herself she would never beg to be enough again.

The thought of doing this alone had kept her up for months.

She flipped another page, forcing herself to read every line. “What if Vanessa changes her mind? What if you do?”

“She won’t. Neither will I.” He tapped the contract. “Sign and we schedule the procedure this week Or walk out, Your choice.”

The silence stretched, Chloe picked up the pen, Her fingers felt cold, She thought about the empty crib in her spare room, the tiny clothes she’d hidden in the back of her closet, She thought about never having to explain to another man why she wanted this on her own terms, She signed.

Damian took the folder back without comment and slid it into a drawer. “My assistant will handle the rest. Welcome to the arrangement, Miss Bennett.”

Chloe stood, smoothing her blouse, Her legs felt unsteady as she headed for the door. She had done it, She was really doing this.

Behind her, Damian’s phone rang. He answered on the second ring, voice dropping lower.

“Vanessa. Now’s not a good time.”

Chloe paused with her hand on the door handle. She shouldn’t listen, but she couldn’t help it.

Damian’s tone sharpened. “We discussed this. The surrogate just left. It’s done.” A pause. “No. I said it needs to work.”

She glanced back, He was staring straight at her, eyes narrowed with a strange new intensity that made her stomach twist, His free hand clenched on the desk edge.

Chloe pulled the door open and stepped into the hallway, pulse pounding in her ears. Whatever that was about, it wasn’t her problem.

She had a contract.

She had a plan.

And for the first time in years, she had hope.

The elevator doors slid open. Chloe stepped inside and pressed the button for the lobby.

Just as the doors began to close, a voice shouted from down the hallway.

"Miss Bennett! Wait!"
