SCARLET

I woke up the next morning feeling odd. Not bad or dejected as I had been last night. But odd in a way that I knew things were changing.

With a sigh, I got out of the bed and quickly freshened up, getting ready for the day.

As soon as I left the room, the first place my eyes wandered to was the master’s bedroom. Julian’s room.

I’d known this marriage was a sham along but I didn’t think we’d stay in separate rooms. Of course, this was only expected. Since it was all a ploy.

“Maybe I should make breakfast…” I mumbled to myself.

It hadn’t been up to two days but this was the best I had ever lived in my life. No shared space with my step-mother and step-sister who never hesitated to make me feel like I was a waste of space.

Nothing of that sort.

I was left to my own devices here. With a small sigh, I made my way to the kitchen, only to find the maid there already working on breakfast. Her eyes lit up as soon as she saw me.

“Good day, my lady.” She bowed a little.

I returned the smile. “Hello there. Mind if I help out?”

The blood in her face instantly drained. She tried to shake her head and refuse but I was already washing my hands before she could say anything else.

Despite her protests, I worked with her in getting the breakfast ready. By the time we were rounding up, the sound of footsteps echoed from Julian’s room.

He was already awake.

The maid was already laying out the food when he finally made his appearance.

His face looked…oddly perfect for someone that just got out of bed. And his bed head was nonexistent. Looking at him now, it was hard to deny how attractive he was.

His masculinity oozed out enough sexiness that made it near hard to resist him.

“What’s going on?”

The illusion in my head shattered at the irritated sound of his voice. The maid looked scared for her life, her body already trembling.

I quickly chipped in. “Oh, I—I just decided to help out with breakfast.”

His gaze lingered over the food spread on the table. When his eyes finally turned back to me, the irritation was undeniable.

“That’s not your job, and it certainly shouldn’t be any of your concern.”

Everything else I was going to say died in my throat. I slowly nodded, a piercing pain hitting my chest repeatedly. It wasn’t like I had expected any kindness from him, but his words still stung nonetheless.

His gaze turned to the maid. “Give us a moment.”

She nodded her head, and disappeared into one of the rooms. As soon as she was out of earshot, Julian focused on me once again.

“I’ve decided on what we’re going to do.”

I blinked. “About what?”

“My mother.” He paused, eyeing me carefully. “And your family of course.”

Right…

It was always about that at the end of the day. Nothing else mattered.

“I know what my mother wants, and that’s absolute power. In due time, she’ll make this marriage out to be a scandal. The backlash will be heavy, and I will get voted out of my own company as a result of that.”

My frown came unbidden. It was hard to wrap my head around why a mother could hate her own son as much as she did.

His face was emotionless as it always was, making it harder to even understand how he was truly feeling about it.

“We’ve already decided on this alliance. What we’re going to start with, is make her think she’s winning.”

I folded my arms, letting his words sink in. “And then what?”

“We destroy her plans together.” He answers simply. “That’s all that would follow.”

It was hard not to fix him with a hard look. It sounded plausible, but once again, I really didn’t see how it would benefit me.

“And my step-sister?”

Julian leaned his weight on one of the chairs. “We’ll make sure both she and her mother are caught in the backlash. None of them gets spared.”

His eyes remained stuck on me, and for the first time that day, I felt uncomfortable. He always had that effect with him.

And it wasn’t just because he was so beautiful.

His gaze alone could instantly unearth you wherever you stood. No wonder he could be so intimidating without muttering so much as a word.

“Any objections?”

I paused, the words stirring in my throat. His eyes remained expectant, almost impatient, as he watched me.

“Yes,” I started. “The money for my father’s treatment.”

Seconds of silence passed between us. Then he let out an unexpected laugh. It was dry, devoid of any humor whatsoever.

When he finally stopped, the amusement in his eyes were gone. Replaced by something else I couldn’t quite explain.

“You’ll get your money. I know that’s all there is to you.”

I nodded, ignoring the searing sting of his words. That was one thing that would always remain. The harshness with which he said how he truly felt about things.

The sound of his ringtone cut through the thick tension in the room. He turned away from me to answer it.

“Yeah, come in.”

I stared eagerly as he turned back to me.

Who could the other person on the line be?

Just as soon as those words had passed the mine, there was a knock on the door.

Wordlessly, Julian made his way there. There was a bit of an exchange between him and the person. It sounded like a man…

“Over here.”

I froze when the visitor entered. He had a tall frame, nearly reaching Julian’s height. Dirty blonde hair and enough confidence to feel a room. That, and he had a briefcase with him.

“This is Cameron,” Julian gestured at the man. “My best friend and lawyer. I had him forge a formal agreement for the alliance. To avoid any…discrepancies moving forward.”

A weight tightened around my chest.

Right…

This was in both our interests. It was better to be safe than sorry. Cameron held out a hand which I warmly accepted.

“Please go through this, and make it clear that you understand all the stipulations of this agreement.”

He handed me a fine print document, and then placed a pen beside it. I took my seat, pushing aside the plate of breakfast I was no longer hungry for.

My eyes read through each line of the document for anything I would have otherwise missed. It took a while but I eventually finished up with the whole thing.

One year. That was how long we had to keep up this alliance. I would play the part of a perfect wife, and he would make sure all my finances were handled.

In return, my loyalty and unending obedience was his.

It sounded like the worst mistake I could make. But I was tired. Tired of all the hurt and betrayal I had faced by the two people I had sacrificed so much for. Tired of being used as a pawn by a woman I had never even wrong.

If this was the only way I could gain retribution…

I reached for the pen and drew out my signature. The ink was dried and the agreement finalized.

“Good job.”

Julian’s eyes finally glinted, and once again, I was reminded of why people had referred to him as a monster.

I was starting to wonder if I had made the right decision.

ScarletI stared at my reflection in the mirror, but I didn't recognize the woman looking back. The dress clung to my skin like a second, suffocating layer of ice. Chloe had done my makeup, masking the red, swollen evidence of my breakdown with expensive concealer and heavy makeup.“You look breathtaking,” Chloe whispered in a tight voice. She was picking up the bags she’d dropped earlier, refusing to meet my eyes because she knew. She knew this dress was just a costume for a fucking nightmare.“I look like a doll,” I muttered, grabbing a clutch bag. “A fucking expensive, wind-up doll.”I took deep breaths and walked out of my room. It was time to put on a good reality show for the whole world to see.I walked downstairs, my heels clicking like ticking time bombs against the hardwood. Julian was waiting at the bottom of the staircase. He had changed into a sharp, black suit that made him look like a goddamn hot predator in a tuxedo. He looked up. His breath stopped, just for a spli

ScarletThe front door slammed so hard that the entire house seemed to shudder. I flinched, my hand flying to my chest. The mug of tea I’d been holding rattled against the coaster as I scrambled to my feet. Julian was already in the living room, his coat discarded in a heap behind him. He looked like he’d been dragged through hell and back; his tie was hanging loose, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes… they were dark, burning, and completely unhinged.I took a shaky step back, my heart slamming against my ribs. "Julian? Is everything okay?"He didn't answer. He just stalked toward me, the air around him crackling with a terrifying, jagged energy. I felt my throat go dry. My father’s bills. The treatment. I can’t piss him off.He stopped just inches from me, his presence suffocating. I had to tilt my head back to meet his gaze, my legs feeling like lead."We need to talk," he rasped, his voice sounding like gravel."Okay," I whispered, keeping my voice as small as possible. I loo

JulianMy heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I stepped into my father’s office. The air here was filled with the smell of stale tobacco and the suffocating weight of decades of lies. My father was down the hall in his bedroom, wheezing his life away, but the room still felt like his cold, dead eyes were watching me."Charity," he’d barked.I stormed over to the desk, shoving aside documents and confidential files. I ripped the drawer open, and I saw the document titled Charity. There it was. A thin, leather-bound file. I yanked it out, but the corner caught on the metal track. Then I heard a click. The back panel of the desk slid forward an inch. I frowned as I pulled the panel all the way open. It wasn't a standard drawer. It was a shallow, hidden compartment built into the wood. My breath stopped as I reached in and pulled out a small, dust-covered envelope.I looked back at the door. I was alone. I tore the envelope open, and a black-and-white photograph slid ou

JulianThe silence in the foyer was suffocating, heavy with the stench of my own failure. I didn’t look back at the stairs where Scarlett had just disappeared, her stinging words still echoing against the marble like gunshots. My jaw ached from clenching it so hard that my teeth felt like they might crack.I grabbed my coat from the chair, the heavy wool feeling like a lead weight in my hands. Every movement felt mechanical. I didn't say a word to the staff, just shoved the front door open and stepped out into the biting afternoon air.My driver was standing by the black car, his posture stiff, sensing the storm radiating off me. I didn't even look at him. I yanked the passenger door open, the metal handle cold against my palm, and threw myself into the back seat."Drive," I spat, the word barely a growl."Yes, sir," he muttered, quickly sliding behind the wheel. The car roared to life, the tires biting into the gravel as we tore away from the estate. I stared out the tinted window

JulianThe phone on my desk vibrated again, the screen illuminating the dark study. It was Lady Eleanor.I didn't answer. I let it ring out, my thumb tracing the rim of my whiskey glass. The liquid amber swirled, catching the dim light of the room. When the vibration finally stopped, I stood up and threw the glass against the brick fireplace. It shattered into a hundred glittering shards.I didn't care about the glass. I cared about the humiliation.I marched out of the study and stepped into the foyer just as the heavy oak front doors flew open. Scarlett stumbled inside. Her neat low bun was destroyed, strands of dark hair whipping across her face. The pale blue dress was stained, her chest heaving as she gasped for air. Smears of black mascara tracked down her pale cheeks. She froze on the bottom step of the staircase when she saw me."You're late for lunch, Scarlett," I said, my voice dropping to a freezing tone that usually made grown men flinch. In my right hand, the phone bega

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S REPLACEMENT BRIDE   Chapter 12

ScarlettThe car drove into a huge mansion filled with guards and maids walking up and down. The driver slowly drove down the path and stopped at the front of a huge door. A security guard opened the door and I stepped out feeling nervous. A maid with a cold expression was there to usher me in. The door groaned as I stepped into the house. The cool, stale air of the foyer clings to her skin. The house felt less like a home and more like a museum. The maid with the expression as wooden as the floorboards beneath them, gestured for me to follow. They moved through a labyrinth of dimly lit corridors and the silence was broken only by the rhythmic click of my heels. Finally, the maid paused before a set of double doors, placing a soft knock before pushing them open. The room beyond was bathed in the amber glow of a dying fire. Eleanor sat by the hearth, a book resting forgotten in her lap. As I stepped into the room, Eleanor rose with a grace that made the space feel suddenly smaller.
