The second Coach Harlan locked the locker room door I knew something ugly was about to drop on all of us.

The place smelled like sweat and fresh tape. Guys sat on benches or leaned against lockers half dressed after practice. Nobody joked around. The air felt thick enough to choke on. I stayed near the back my arms crossed trying to look calm while my mind raced. Kade sat across the room his gray eyes flicking to me for a split second before locking on Coach.

  • THE CAPTAIN AND THE KILLER   chapter 48

The second the music hit full blast at my lake house I knew this party was either going to save the team or burn it down completely.Guys were everywhere. Some splashing in the lake with beers in hand. Others crowded around the grill shouting over loud music. Bottles clinked and laughter rolled across the yard. I had thrown this bash to pull everyone back together after the locker room mess.Kade you made it I said when he walked up with a case of drinks. The boys need this. Need to remember we are on the same side.He grinned that sharp way and bumped my shoulder. Smart move Captain. But do not think this fixes everything. They still split on us.A veteran wandered over already buzzing. Evan this place is perfect. Lake. Fire pit. No coaches watching. Exactly what we needed. You throwing this to shut up the mole talk?Yeah something like that I answered. Drink up. Laugh. We are Blades tonight. No sides. Just us.The young winger

The second I smelled smoke the whole party turned into pure panic.Fire the young winger yelled running up from the dock. The boathouse is burning. Someone set it.Guys started shouting and pushing toward the lake. I dropped my drink and ran. Flames already licked up the side of the old wooden building. The party music kept playing loud like nothing was wrong.Kade where are you I shouted into the chaos. Everyone get back. Call the fire department now.The veteran grabbed my arm breathing hard. One of the young guys is still in there. He passed out earlier. We thought he was sleeping it off near the boats. My stomach dropped. Which one? We have to get him out.Kade pushed through the crowd fast. I am going in. Stand back.No way the big defenseman said. Too dangerous. The roof is starting to go.Kade ignored him and ran straight for the burning boathouse. Kade stop I yelled but he was already kicking the door op

The second we pushed through the hotel doors two minutes before curfew I knew we were screwed.Viktor stood dead center in the bright lobby with a full camera crew behind him. Lights blazing. Microphones ready. His smile looked like a shark that had already tasted blood. Well well if it is not our captain and his favorite Russian problem Viktor called out loud enough for the whole lobby to hear. Cutting it close boys. Where have you been?Kade froze beside me. I felt his shoulder tense against mine. We had barely made it back from meeting a contact about Vance and now this.I forced a quick laugh and stepped forward. Hey Viktor. Long night. We got turned around in the city. You know how these streets are. One wrong turn and you are miles from where you need to be.Viktor tilted his head. The camera light hit my face hot and blinding. Turned around. Really? For three hours after practice? Coach said curfew is strict this trip. Fans want t

  • THE CAPTAIN AND THE KILLER   chapter 47

The second I walked into the Toronto locker room the air felt like it was about to catch fire.Guys were already yelling at each other by the benches. Bags slammed down hard. No one smiled. I had never seen the team this split. What the hell is going on I asked loud enough to cut through the noise. One of the older defensemen pointed straight at Kade. Ask your boy there. Rumors say we got a mole feeding info to Vance. Someone is selling us out before playoffs.Kade stood up slow his eyes cold. You got proof or you just running your mouth again?Proof is all over the place another winger jumped in. Strange trades. Guys getting pulled from lines for no reason. And you two keep disappearing right before big decisions. Looks bad Evan. Real bad.I stepped between them hands up. Hold on. We are better than this. No one is a mole. Vance is the problem not each other.A young forward laughed sharp. Easy for you to say Captain. Y

The second that broken down stranger pushed his way into our hotel room I felt the floor drop out from under me.Kade slammed the door shut and threw the lock. The guy looked wrecked. Thin face covered in old scars and eyes that had seen too much. He kept rubbing his hands together like he could not get warm. This was the player Vance had destroyed years ago. Everyone called him the ghost now.You two need to listen close and listen good he said breathing fast. Vance is about to burn the whole roster down before playoffs. Anyone who is not fully under his thumb gets erased from the game forever.I stood frozen near the window. Erased how exactly? We have been careful. The ruined player shook his head and dropped into the chair by the desk. Not careful enough. He has a big cleansing planned. A total clear out. Ten or more guys are on his list. If you do not follow every order on the fixing and the bets you are done. Permanently off the ice. Some wi

The cold Montreal wind cut through us as we left the warehouse behind.Kade walked fast ahead of me. Snow crunched under his boots. "Marcus knew too much. Sasha. Vance. Your father. We cannot let this go."I hurried to catch up. "Slow down. We need to think. He could still be working for them. That whole story might be a setup."Kade glanced back. "Maybe. But he looked broken. Like he lost everything. I saw that look before. In the mirror some days."I stayed close. The streets were empty. Only a few cars passed. "What do we do now? Go back to the hotel? Tell the team?"Kade shook his head. "No team. Not yet. This stays between us. Marcus said meet tomorrow. We go. Hear more."I grabbed his sleeve. "This is dangerous. They used your brother name to pull you out here. Next time it might be a bullet not a sign."Kade stopped under a streetlight. Snow fell on his dark hair. "I know the risk. But Sasha deserves answers. I sp
