Chapter 12: The Midnight Meridian

The glass walls of the boardroom shook as thunder rolled over Manhattan. Avery did not look back at the board members she had just shocked into silence. Her eyes were fixed on her phone's clock: 11:59 PM.

"Marcus!" she yelled into her earpiece already running to the elevator. "They are moving Silas from the downtown processing center now. This is not allowed. We need to stop them."

"I am checking the department logs now Ms. Sterling Marcus's voice came through

By mid-afternoon the salt-heavy winds of the Atlantic shipping lanes were blowing strongly.Avery had a telemetry receiver on the brass railing of the wing. Her dark tank top was whipping against her skin in the ocean spray. The canvas work pants were stiff with salt crust. Her leather work boots were holding her steady against the roll of the 900-foot container vessel. The vessel was approaching the entrance to the New York Harbor channel."The automated ballast-transfer pumps are dragging an eight-millisecond response latency " Avery called out. She swiped her thumb across the interface. "The shipyard in Virginia used hydraulic actuators that couldn't handle the rapid trim adjustments required by the Thorne-Sterling Vanguards high-speed routing curves. Chapter 92: The High-Velocity LoopThe peace and quiet of the Manhattan executive suite did not last long. By 4:00 AM Avery was back in her world standing inside the high-security technical hub of the Thorne-Sterling transit terminal in Newark. The air was cool and crisp. It hummed with the power of the big machines that supplied the automated cranes along the shipping channels. Avery had changed out of her suit and was now wearing dark utility trousers and a charcoal tank top. Her hair was pulled back into a knot. Her leather boots made a sound as she walked on the steel catwalk. She was checking the digital screens that showed how fast the cargo was being loaded."The cranes at Berth 4 are slowing down the container locks by seven seconds, " Avery said loudly. Her voice was sharp and clear. She was using her slate to run a special test on the terminal's pressure loops. "The old contractors used a type of fluid that gets thinner when the pumps are working hard. If we do not change th

She had not even touched her drink. She had taken off her jacket. Was just wearing her vest and pants with her hands in her pockets. She was looking out at the lights of the ships on the East River. She felt really calm which was weird for her."You are looking at the traffic again " Silas said, his voice filling the room.He walked over to her from the bar. He was really quiet even though he is a big guy. He had rolled up his sleeves. He was holding a tablet that showed all the information about the ships that were coming in."I am looking at how long it takes for the ships to turn around, " Avery said, smiling a little as she looked at him i

For a moment she just stood there enjoying the quiet. Then Silas chuckled, a rumbling sound. He stood by the big glass windows looking out over the Manhattan skyline. He took off his charcoal suit jacket. Threw it over a leather armchair. His white shirt glowed against the city view. He turned to face her his tie his gray eyes burning with a strong raw heat."A show dog, Avery?" Silas said with a smile. His deep voice sounded warm and amused. It was perfect. She had kept her hair down in its dark waves. She was not wearing any jewelry except for her grandfather's silver stopwatch. It was tucked into her breast pocket. Her boots were leather. They were sleek and polished."They are not going to ask about the profit margins, Avery," a low voice said from the doorway.Silas was standing there. He was leaning against the frame. He had a glass of wat

The air was thick with the smell of iron and creosote. A summer storm was. The air was electric with it.Avery was standing on the metal deck of the switching tower, her hands on the iron railing. She had changed into a dark tank top. Her work pants were covered in rust dust from checking the old gears. Her boots were digging into the floor as she looked out at the yard below. There were dozens of heavy rail cars being sorted by automated switches."The switching time on the rail line is now zero, " Avery said, her voice clear and strong. She did not look back as the steel door of the tower opened and a cool wind came in. "The old operators were using controls that took twenty minutes per car. With Leo's system we can sort eighty cars in under sixty seconds."Silas stepped onto the deck, his frame blocking out the wind. He was wearing a charc
