Silence fell like a storm waiting to break.

For a single, suspended moment, no one moved.

No one breathed.

And then the whispers began.

Soft at first.

Then louder as seconds went by.

Spreading like wildfire through the gathered wolves.

“Did he just.......”

“He chose her?”

“The rejected one?”

“Why would he want her?”

Elsie stood frozen where she was, the weight of dozens.....no, hundreds—of eyes pressing into her skin. Her pulse pounded in her ears, but outwardly, she remained still.

Composed and unmoving.

“She should accept,” someone muttered, not nearly as quietly as they intended. “It’s the best she’ll ever get.”

A low murmur of agreement followed.

“What use is she here anyway?”

“She can’t even shift.”

“She’d be useless in war.”

“At least she’d be of value to this pack and there will be no war…”

Each word landed.

Sharp.

Precise.

Cruel.

Elsie heard them all.

Every single one.

But strangely...... strange enough...

They didn’t hurt the way they used to.

Maybe because she had already heard worse.

Or maybe because the part of her that used to feel deeply… was still missing.

Her wolf.

Still gone.

Still silent.

Still leaving her alone with nothing but her thoughts.

Across the platform, Alpha Richard, Edward’s father—stood rigid, the weight of the situation settling heavily on his shoulders. This was not part of the plan. This was not what he had expected when he invited the Nightcrest Alpha into his territory.

Slowly, his gaze shifted towards Elsie’s parents, the Beta and his wife.

There was something in his eyes now.

Something rare.

Something uncomfortable.

Apology.

Unspoken.

But there.

Because this—

This was not a request.

It was pressure.

Political.

Strategic.

Dangerous.

Refusing Rowan Nightcrest outright could lead to consequences no pack wanted to face.

And everyone knew it.

Edward stepped forward slightly, his jaw tight.

“This is unnecessary,” he said, his voice controlled but edged with something sharper. “There are other ways to negotiate an alliance.”

Rowan didn’t even look at him for him to even acknowledge him.

His attention remained exactly where it had been from the beginning.

On Elsie.

Sara shifted beside Edward, her hand tightening instinctively against his arm. Her expression had lost its earlier confidence, replaced now with unease.

This was not something she could control.

Not something she could charm or manipulate.

And that unsettled her.

“Father,” she said quietly, glancing toward Alpha Richard, “this isn’t right—”

“I am aware,” the Alpha replied, his tone firm but strained.

He turned back to Rowan.

“You are asking for something… unconventional,” he said carefully.

“I am stating my terms,” Rowan corrected smoothly.

The difference was clear.

And deliberate.

A heavy silence followed.

All eyes turned again.

To her.

Elsie could feel it.

The pressure.

The expectation.

The judgment.

Her father took a step forward, his voice low but firm.

“This decision concerns my daughter,” he said. “She will not be forced into anything she does not agree to.”

For the first time, Rowan’s gaze flickered slightly.

Not to the Beta—

But to Elsie again.

As if waiting.

As if he already knew.

Her mother moved quickly to her side, her hand gripping Elsie’s arm gently but firmly.

“You don’t have to say anything,” she whispered urgently. “We will handle this.”

But Elsie wasn’t listening.

Not to her mother.

Not to the whispers.

Not to the tension thickening the air.

Her eyes were locked on Rowan.

On the man she had met just the night before.

The man who had stood before her beneath the moon......

Unapologetic.

Unbothered.

Unmoved.

The same man now stood before an entire pack—

Demanding her.

Not asking.

Not negotiating.

Choosing.

And like the first time she saw him,

Something stirred inside her.

Faint.

Uncertain.

But real.

Not her wolf, that she knew of....

But something close.

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.

The silence stretched.

Became unbearable.

Then,Elsie stepped forward.

The movement alone was enough to draw every eye fully onto her.

Her mother tightened her grip.

“Elsie, don’t...”

But Elsie gently pulled away.

And then she spoke.

“I agree.”

The words rang out.

Clear.

Loud.

Unmistakable.

The reaction was instant.

Gasps.

Shouts.

Chaos.

“What?!”

“Did she just agree.....”

“Is she serious?!”

Her mother’s voice broke through the noise.

“No!” she cried, stepping forward. “Elsie, you don’t understand, you don't......!”

Her father’s expression darkened, shock and anger flashing across his face.

“This is not a decision you make so lightly,” he said sharply. “You don’t even know him.”

Edward’s gaze snapped to her, something unreadable flashing across his features.

“Think carefully,” he said, his voice lower now. “You don’t have to do this.”

Sara remained silent, but her eyes burned with something complicated—something tangled between disbelief and something she refused to name.

But Elsie.....

Elsie wasn’t looking at any of them.

She was still looking at Rowan.

And he.....

He was still looking at her.

No surprise.

No confusion.

Just that same calm, unwavering intensity.

As if this outcome had always been inevitable.

Elsie lifted her chin slightly.

Her voice, when she spoke again, was steady.

“I understand,” she said simply.

Even if she didn’t.

Even if none of this made sense.

She understood one thing.

There was nothing left for her here.

Not her mate.

Not her place.

Not even her wolf.

Her gaze finally shifted.

To the Alpha.

“May I be excused?” she asked.

The courtyard fell into a stunned silence once more.

Alpha Richard hesitated.

Just for a moment.

Then he nodded slowly.

“You may.”

Her mother stepped forward again, her voice breaking now.

“Elsie, please—this isn’t the way—”

But Elsie didn’t stop.

Didn’t look back.

Didn’t hesitate.

She turned and walked away from the ceremony.

From the whispers.

From the tension.

From the life she had known.

Behind her, the noise erupted again.

Voices rising.

Arguments forming.

Shock turning into heated discussion.

But Elsie kept walking.

Step after step.

Until the sounds faded behind her.

Until the air felt lighter again.

Until it was just her.

Alone.

Yet strangely—

Not as empty as before.

Because for the first time since everything fell apart—

She had made a choice.

And somewhere behind her—

Among the chaos—

Rowan Nightcrest watched her leave.

With a faint smile.

Like everything was falling exactly into place.

The grand gates of Nightcrest creaked open slowly.A procession of black carriages rolled into the palace courtyard, accompanied by dozens of Bloom Pack warriors dressed in ceremonial armor. The Nightcrest guards immediately straightened, hands resting on the hilts of their swords. An uneasy silence settled over the courtyard.Elsie instinctively tightened her grip on Rowan's hand.He noticed.Without looking at her, he gently squeezed her hand back.A silent reassurance.I'm here. The first carriage came to a stop.Frank stepped forward, flanked by several elite Nightcrest warriors. The carriage door opened.Edward Blackwood stepped down first. He wore the black ceremonial robes of Bloom Pack's Alpha, embroidered with gold thread. His posture was confident, but the moment his eyes landed on Elsie...Everything else around him disappeared. She looked different.Healthier.The dull sadness that had once clouded her beautiful green eyes had faded, replaced by a quiet peace he had never

The letter remained in Rowan's hand long after Frank had left. His silver eyes lingered on the elegant handwriting beneath Edward Blackwood's signature.Edward rarely acted without purpose. If he had decided to travel all the way to Nightcrest, then whatever brought him here was important.Or dangerous.Rowan folded the letter carefully and placed it inside his desk drawer. His gaze drifted toward the palace gardens below.Elsie was still there. She was sitting beneath one of the silver willow trees with Rose, laughing quietly at something the maid had said.It wasn't a loud laugh. But it was genuine. The sight softened his expression. For weeks, she had looked as though the weight of the world rested on her shoulders.Now...Little by little...She was smiling again. He had no intention of letting anyone take that away from her.Not even Edward. The following morning, Elsie woke to the sound of birds singing outside her balcony.Nightcrest mornings had become one of her favorite thin

Silence settled over the room. The assassin's lifeless body lay sprawled across the marble floor while the shattered windows allowed the cold night breeze to sweep through the chamber. No one moved. No one spoke.Elsie's eyes never left Rowan. She could still picture them. Those golden eyes. For a brief moment, they hadn't belonged to the man she'd come to know over the past few weeks. They had belonged to something...Ancient.Powerful.Terrifying."...Your eyes," she whispered again."They changed."Rowan's hand was still wrapped gently around hers.He looked into her eyes, searching for fear.Instead, all he found was confusion.Curiosity.Concern."My Alpha."Frank's voice broke the silence."The palace must be secured."Rowan didn't look away from Elsie."Take the body.""Search every entrance.""No one leaves the palace until I give the order.""Yes, Alpha."Within moments, guards flooded into the room, carrying away the assassin while servants hurried to clean the broken furnit

Rose's terrified scream echoed through the palace."My Luna! The prisoner is inside the palace!"Rowan reacted instantly. In one swift movement, he stepped in front of Elsie, placing himself between her and the door. His entire demeanor changed in the blink of an eye. The gentle husband who had kissed her only moments ago disappeared, replaced by the feared Alpha of Nightcrest."Stay behind me," he ordered.Elsie nodded without argument.Heavy footsteps thundered through the corridor outside.Then.....A loud crash. The chamber doors burst open.A palace guard stumbled inside before collapsing onto the floor, blood soaking the front of his uniform."My... Alpha..." he gasped."He... he's heading..."Before he could finish, his eyes rolled back, and he lost consciousness.A dark figure stepped over the fallen guard. He was dressed from head to toe in black, his face hidden beneath a hood. Twin daggers glinted in the candlelight as he slowly entered the room."So," the man said with a m

Shadows Beneath the Moon........The faint warmth of Rowan's kiss lingered on Elsie's forehead long after he had left. She sat motionless before her vanity, her fingertips unconsciously brushing the same spot over and over again. It had only been a kiss on the forehead.Nothing more.Yet somehow...It had stirred something inside her that she could no longer deny. The loneliness she had felt over the past week had eased, even if only a little. For the first time after arguing with Rowan, she slept peacefully. The next morning, Rose helped Elsie dress in a simple sapphire-blue gown embroidered with silver thread."My Luna," Rose said with a smile as she adjusted the sleeves, "you look beautiful."Elsie smiled politely."Thank you."Just then, a maid entered carrying a breakfast tray."My Luna, Alpha Rowan requested this be served in the garden."Elsie's eyes brightened almost imperceptibly."He remembered..."Rose smiled knowingly."The Alpha always keeps his word."The palace gardens

Elsie's breath caught in her throat. The reflection staring back at her wasn't Rose.It was Rowan. For several long seconds, neither of them moved. His large hands still held the silk ribbon loosely between his fingers while the long strands of her hair rested against his palms.Elsie remained frozen on the stool, unable to bring herself to turn around."When did..." she whispered."When did you come in?""A few moments ago."His voice was as calm as ever."I dismissed the maids."Only then did Elsie notice the room had become completely silent.Rose and the other maids had disappeared without her realizing.Heat immediately rushed to her cheeks. She was only wearing a thin ivory nightdress that reached just below her knees. It wasn't inappropriate, but it was far less modest than anything she had ever allowed Rowan to see.She instinctively reached for the robe lying beside her. Before she could grab it, Rowan gently caught her wrist."You don't have to hide."His words only made her
