Hunter

By the time my alarm rang the next morning, my eyes felt raw from staring into the dark all night long. I hadn't gotten a wink of sleep, and it was all because of damn Travis.

I knew he would be a problem when mum first told me she was getting married to Mr. Moore. I had already known about Travis by then, but it was only after mention of the wedding I had done a deep dive into him.

Safe to say I had been less than impressed.

As I said, I knew he'd be trouble, but not even in my wildest dreams would I have imagined what kind of trouble he would be. I brushed my fingers lightly over my lip, still feeling the burn of his mouth against mine.

Groaning, I climbed out of bed.

Something drew me over to the window and I slowly pushed the curtains open...and nearly swallowed my tongue.

A shirtless Travis was headed out of the outbuilding that housed the mansions gym. Sweat slipped down his muscular chest and ran down his abs down to the gym shorts that sat too low on his hips and left almost nothing to the imagination.

Holy Christmas.

Snapping the curtains shut, I shook my head to dispel the image of my sweaty step brother.

I needed an icy cold shower and maybe a new hobby that didn't include aggravating Travis. In fact, staying far away from him might be the better option. I had no illusions that we would be best buddies and fit right in as the brother he always wanted.

Mind made up, I headed to the bathroom and turned the water as cold as it could go.

Of course, all my perfectly laid plans went flying into the wind two hours later as I sat across from Travis at breakfast.

"Since when did we start having breakfast together?" He gritted out.

"Since Helena said so." Mr. Moore picked up his cup of coffee without sparing his son a glance.

I had long since decided that I didn't like the man, and I had a feeling Travis shared my feelings. The question was why? Michael Moore had clearly given his son every benefit in life.

"Oh yes." Mum clasped her hands together, eyes shining with delight. "I always liked the idea of coming together to have meals together as a family. It helps to foster family bonds."

Travis scoffed, but didn't say anything else.

"You don't think it fosters family bonds?" I drawled, while stabbing pieces of bacon with my fork.

He shot me a look I couldn't interpret, but remained silent. A challenge then? I had always liked challenges.

"You look tired. Rough night?" I prodded.

"Excuse me?" His voice was icy.

I shrugged. "Well, you didn't come home last night. Must have been one hell of a party last night."

"I didn't know I had a curfew." He snorted. "And how do you know I didn't come home last night? Don't tell me you waited up for me."

He really didn't know me at all if he thought that would make me back down. "I did. You know me, I take family really serious."

"We're not family." He snarled, eyes hardening.

I pretended to look hurt for a second, before letting realisation brighten my face. "It makes sense now."

"What does?" This time it was my mother that spoke up, her gaze pinging between me and Travis. "What makes sense now?"

"Yesterday." I nodded sagely. "It would have been weird if you saw me as your brother after you_"

Travis suddenly shot to his feet, his cutlery clattering to the floor. "What the hell is your problem?"

"Travis, sit down." Mr. Moore growled. "Breakfast isn't over."

"I lost my appetite. You three should bond without me." Spinning on his heels, he marched out of the room without sparing me another glance.

Hiding my smirk, I went after him, catching his arm before he could go up the stairs. He spun around and tore out of my hold in a lightning quick move.

"Don't touch me." He growled.

I raised my hands in surrender. "I can't even touch you? That's mean considering the fact that I let you kiss me last night."

All the blood drained from his face, and his eyes went wide. "I di- I didn't kiss you."

"Really?" I chuckled. "Because I swear I remember the feel of your mouth against_"

"Shut the fuck up!" He slapped his hand over my mouth and pushed me up against the wall, eyes narrowed in loathing and a good amount of panic. "I don't know what happened yesterday. I can't remember any of it, okay? I was drunk. It was a mistake. I didn't fucking kiss you.

I pushed his hand off my mouth. "Which one is it, Travis?"

"What?"

"Make up your mind. If you were drunk and can't remember, then how do you know you didn't kiss me? So which one is it? Were you drunk or was it a mistake?"

His eyes searched mine for a moment before he stepped away from me. "You think this is a game?"

"I didn't say it was." I pointed out.

"No, your attitude tells me everything I need to know. You think all of this is so amusing, because you have no stakes here. Hockey, my life, it's all one big joke to you."

My fingers tightened into fists at my sides. "You don't know anything about me, so don't assume shit."

He scoffed. "You don't know anything about me either."

"I know that you kissed me. All I want to know, is why. No offence, bro, but you're not my type." I taunted. "So I need to know if I should be careful around you."

Rage flamed in his eyes and his jaw clenched. He took a threatening step forward, but he must have thought better about it, because a second later, he spun around to leave.

My hands moved before I could stop them, grabbing his wrist. "Wait a mi_"

And that's when I felt it. Several raised bumps on the inside of his wrist. Without thinking, I turned his hand over and glanced down at the faded bruises in shock.

"What the hell happened to you?"

Shame, rage and terror moved through his gaze, but then a wall of steel fell over his face, blocking out every emotion till his face looked carved from granite. He pulled away from my hold.

"Stay the fuck away from me."

For the first time since meeting Travis Moore, I wasn’t thinking about hockey. I wasn’t thinking about how much I wanted to get under his skin.

I wasn’t even thinking about that damn kiss.

All I could think about were those bruises, and the look of pure terror that flashed across his face before he buried it.

Because whatever Travis Moore was hiding…

It was a hell of a lot bigger than me.

Travis I was undoing the lace on my skating shoes when someone let out a quiet 'holy shit'. I whirled around immediately, and noticed that most of the guys' attention was fixed on the flat screen TV hanging at the far wall of the locker room. Confused, I drifted toward the gathering crowd. "... As of this morning_" a middle aged reporter was saying. "The NHL has already released an official statement following the statement put up by the two eye witnesses at the time of the assault. The case of star player Neal Matthews attacking a fan at the beginning of the season caused large waves in the media, with him apologizing and both his team management and league removing him temporarily from the team roster until further investigation." My stomach lurched. "Investigation has been ongoing with only one witness agreeing to speak up, but that all changed last night when they finally spoke up to defend Mr. Matthews." The man continued. "According to the statement by the witnesses, Mr. Ma

TravisThe first hit came barely one minute into the game.A defenseman built like a freight train drove his shoulder into my chest the second I collected the puck. The impact rattled through my ribs, but I’d been expecting it. I absorbed the check, spun off the boards, and shoveled the puck toward Law before crashing into the glass. The crowd erupted, hungry for blood. Away games were always hostile, but this arena took things personally. Every touch of the puck earned us a chorus of boos. Every whistle brought another wave of jeers.I grinned despite myself. This was what I loved about hockey. The fast, unforgiving draw of it. “Behind you!” Sammy yelled.I pivoted just in time to intercept a pass, batting it down with my stick before launching forward. We immediately fell into position. Law took the left lane, while Sammy streaked down the middle. I waited until the defender committed before sliding the puck across.Law's stick hooked it.I watched with a smile as the puck sailed

HunterWatching hockey when I was supposed to be playing it was torture. I sat halfway up the arena stands with my elbows braced on my knees, glaring holes into the ice while our team warmed up below. The roar of the crowd rolled around me in waves, but all I could hear was the scrape of skates carving fresh lines into the rink. That should’ve been me. Instead, I was stuck wearing jeans and a team hoodie like some glorified mascot. My fingers curled into fists. This was all Travis' fault. The asshole probably enjoyed reminding me he could bench me whenever he pleased.Down on the ice, Law skated backward while chirping at Sammy. Sammy responded by spraying him with a shower of ice, earning a loud string of curses that carried all the way up into the stands.“Mind if I sit?”I glanced sideways. Zahara smiled politely, already lowering herself into the empty seat beside me.“Pretty sure it’s public seating.” I drawled, more than a little suspicious that she had chosen to sit at my side

TravisSomething was off.I felt it the second I stepped onto the team bus.The aisle was the same. Law was already arguing with another of the guys over whose playlist deserved custody of the speakers. A couple of the rookies were tossing protein bars at each other when they thought Coach Warren wasn’t looking. Sammy was sprawled across two seats like he owned the damn vehicle.Everything looked normal.Yet something was… missing.I scanned the bus without meaning to. No blond head shoved against the window. No beat-up headphones.Hunter Bailey wasn't tucked into one corner by himself pretending he didn’t notice the rest of us.The realization landed harder than it should have.Right. He was benched.Coach had announced it that morning, making some excuse about recovery protocols, even though everyone knew I’d pushed hardest for it.I’d gotten exactly what I wanted. Then why did the bus feel so damn empty?“You planning on standing there all day, Cap?” Law called. “Or are you waiting

Hunter I stood rooted to the spot long after Jack’s truck had vanished around the bend, my pulse still pounding in my ears.Thirty days.Coach O’Brien. The words echoed through my skull like a broken record.Beside me, my mother hadn’t moved. Her arms were folded tightly across her chest, her gaze fixed on the empty road as though Jack might suddenly reappear.I swallowed, then turned to her. “We need to go to the police.”She didn’t even look at me. “No.”I stared at her. “No? What do you mean no?” I repeated. Her head snapped toward me. “I said no.”“Mum_”“I heard you the first time.”My temper flared. “Jack just threatened us! Did you hear him?"“He blackmailed us.”“He threatened us with prison!”She rounded on me so fast I instinctively took a step back. “And whose fault would that be?” she hissed. The words hit harder than I expected.I clenched my jaw. “So that’s it?” I asked quietly. “We just let him extort us?”Her laugh was hollow. “You think the police are going to save u

Hunter "You are good?" I glanced over at Ivan who had been peering at me at intervals since the drive back to my home. I didn't know what he was seeing on my face, but hoped I was managing to hide the truth. Because the truth made no sense. What happened at that alley made no fucking sense. I had been debating with myself about my next course of action. Storm into Travis' room and ask him what the fuck was that was option A. Option B went more like pretending the whole thing didn't happen, and maybe moving out of the house entirely. I was long overdue to get my own place. Somewhere I didn't have to see Travis daily. Maybe I could even get traded after this season. "Hunter?" Ivan called. I blinked back to the present. "Yeah, I'm good. Peachy." "The club did not do you good." He pointed out."Nah, it was okay. It was a great idea. It helped." Did it really? "The purple haired lady came back pretty quick." He smirked at me. "You weren't up to the task? Or she was disappointed b

Hunter There's a strange tension at dinner. As a matter of fact, there's always a strange tension when Travis and Michael are within ten feet of each other. I considered not coming for dinner at all after what I had put my body through during the brutal practice with Travis, but somehow, I found

Travis I swung my stick and the puck went sailing... right into Hunter's waiting stick. I gritted my teeth, annoyed at ho impressive he was, which made no sense. It was more than clear why coach had brought him on as Neal's replacement. Hunter was fast, had a precision level that was rare on ice

Hunter "I was open, why the hell didn't you pass to me?" I bit out for what had to be the millionth time. It didn't take a genius to realise what was happening, but I was annoyed to admit it had taken me a while to pinpoint the problem. But then again, it had never occurred to me that the team wo

Hunter. Locating Travis hadn't been difficult. The entire team seemed to have an obsession with posting their every move on Instagram. A little stalking of Sammy's page and I found a blurry photo of them with their location tagged. I knew Travis didn't want me anywhere around him. I knew he hated
