Chapter 4

Author: Her Eyes
The sound of hurried footsteps came from downstairs almost instantly. "What happened? Did something happen to Sam?"

My parents and Shelby rushed upstairs at nearly the same time.

Samuel was lying on the floor, clutching his arm, drenched in cold sweat from the pain. Still, he forced himself to try and stand.

"Mom, it's okay," he said. "I don't blame Nick… I just went to give him the card, telling him it was a little something from you and Dad, so he could buy whatever he liked…

"But Nick snatched the card and said it was what he deserved! He said if it weren't for me, he wouldn't have ended up like this. And then, he shoved me…"

He let go of his arm, revealing the terrifying red swelling and bruising.

Mom took one look, and her heart broke at the sight of it. Tears immediately spilled down her face. "How did you get hurt so badly! Nicholas Caldwell! Have you lost your mind? Sam is your brother! How could you be so cruel?"

Dad was shaking with rage, and he looked downright livid. "That bastard! He's really gone too far! We've given him so much these past few months! All those herbal medicines, hundreds of thousands worth of supplements, dividends from the company shares, and now two million—and still he's not satisfied?

"Who does he think he's pulling that sour face at every day? Nicholas, do you really think your mom and I have no limits? Get out here right now and apologize to Sam!"

Hearing my parents' words, I grew more and more bewildered. I had never seen any of those things he'd mentioned.

A faint smile tugged at the corner of Samuel's lips.

Then, with Shelby's help, he stood up shakily and said weakly, "Dad, Mom, I guess Nick just doesn't like me. He poured the herbal medicine I brought him down the drain, and he also smashed the watch I gave him. I was afraid Mom would be upset, so I didn't say anything…

"I'm sorry, Mom and Dad. I shouldn't have come back. If it weren't for me, Nick wouldn't be like this. It's all my fault…"

Remembering how Samuel had hidden the card just moments ago, I felt a deep weariness wash over me. So everything Mom and Dad thought they had given me had all been taken by Samuel.

I hadn't done anything. I hadn't even seen any of it. And yet I had become a greedy, insatiable monster in their eyes.

"It wasn't me, Mom. It was Sam…" I didn't even have the strength left to explain.

I was already dead anyway. They couldn't hear me, and I wouldn't be an eyesore to them anymore. I also wouldn't be fighting with their precious son for anything anymore, so they should be happy, right?

"Mr. Caldwell, please calm down. Nicholas probably just isn't thinking clearly. Don't take it to heart!" Shelby hurriedly stepped forward to intervene, her face full of feigned concern.

"It's one thing that he isn't in the best of health," she added, "but if you get worked up and end up getting sick yourself, that'd be even worse! Please don't act rashly!"

On the surface, it looked like she was trying to mediate, but in reality, she was just adding fuel to the fire.

Sure enough, Dad's anger flared up even more at her words. "He isn't in the best of health? He looks perfectly fine to me! Strong enough to beat Sam black and blue!

"Shelby, take Sam back to his room. I'm going to make things clear with Nick today. The Caldwell family doesn't owe him anything! He can take that two million and get the hell out of my house!"

Dad banged furiously on my door and twisted the handle. But try as he might, it simply wouldn't budge, so he kicked the door hard. The solid wooden door rattled with each blow, as if it would splinter any second.

Samuel wore a smug expression, clearly wanting to stay and watch the show. But Shelby, who hadn't gotten the money yet, didn't dare displease Dad, so she dragged Samuel away.

"Open up! Nicholas, you worthless bastard! You think I can't get to you just because you're hiding in there?"

Just as he raised his foot to deliver one last kick, the doorbell downstairs suddenly rang, loud and urgent.

"Who the hell is that? Why are they ringing the bell so urgently at this hour?" Dad's chest heaved violently, and he exchanged a glance with Mom.

Mom went downstairs and opened the door, only to find several uniformed police officers standing at the entrance, their expressions grave.

Both of them froze.

"Are you Nicholas Caldwell's family? We recovered a body downstream. The preliminary description matches Nicholas. We'd like you to come with us to identify the body."

"I gave up on Nicholas for you! I even fed him veterinary drugs, all so I could marry into the Caldwell family and live a life of luxury! Why did you deceive me, you liar?"Shelby went crazy trying to lunge at Gavin, but the officers held her down firmly. She then began crying and begging them for mercy, putting on a fragile, pitiful act. "Officers! I'm innocent! I was deceived too! I'm a victim! I didn't know anything!""Enough talk! You're not exactly innocent either!" the officer said coldly, taking out another pair of handcuffs. "Shelby Holloway, you are under arrest for fraud and abuse. Come with us.""Take them away!"The sirens wailed into the distance, bringing everything to an end.…Gavin and his father, Steven, were sentenced to death for multiple counts of intentional and malicious crimes. The sentence was to be carried out immediately. Before the execution, Gavin cried and begged to see Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell one last time, saying that after so long, he had already

When Gavin saw Mom, he immediately scrambled over and clutched her leg. "Mom! You have to stop Dad! He's lost it! He actually hit me! Was it Nick? Did he badmouth me again? Mom, you can't be so biased toward Nick! I'm your real son!"Mom let out a humorless laugh and looked down at him from above. "Yeah, he did say something," she began. "He said you were greedy and colluded with the doctor to replace both of his healthy kidneys! One would have been enough, but you insisted on stuffing that necrotic, toxic kidney into his body, just to torment him and make him wish he were dead!"She suddenly raised her hand and pointed at Shelby, her voice shaking. "And her! This evil woman! She claimed she was buying imported medicine for Nick, but all she gave him were cheap hormonal pills and veterinary anti-inflammatory drugs! The two of you turned him into that grotesque, living corpse! You heartless monsters!"Now that their scheme was exposed, Gavin's face turned pale. But he quickly put

Dad's voice was icy and bone-chilling, almost like a demon crawling out from the depths of hell. The old villager trembled as he nodded, pointing at a crooked tree. "It's… it's right here."Without another word, Dad grabbed a shovel and began digging like a man possessed. After several shovelfuls, the corner of a half-rotted woven bag was exposed in the pit.Upon digging deeper, a small pile of bones came into view. The skeleton was curled up, as if it had still been trembling in its final moments. The villager dropped to his knees with a thud, weeping and grovelling. "Please spare me, sir! Have mercy! The real Samuel… He was abducted by that monster, Steven Thornton, when he was five years old!"That child had a fierce temper and tried to escape every day. He refused to submit. Steven couldn't stand his defiance, so one day, when he was drunk, Steven beat the boy to death and buried him here… The one who's going by Samuel now is actually Steven's son, Gavin Thornton!"Gavin had

Mom, however, put on a loving expression and patted Samuel on the shoulder. "It's nothing. Just some trouble Nick stirred up before. The creditors showed up at the company, demanding we pay up. Your Dad and I went to handle it, which is why we were delayed."Then, she deliberately sighed, looking annoyed. "What a curse he is! He mopes around the house all day looking half-dead, yet he still manages to cause us trouble everywhere. As if we owe him anything at all! You're so sensible, Sam. You've never given me a moment of worry."Samuel's eyes flickered with satisfaction at her words. He quickly stepped forward to massage her shoulders. "Mom, Nick just hasn't come to terms with things. He doesn't realize how fortunate he is. But don't worry, Mom. From now on, I'll take care of you and Dad."Mom closed her eyes, hiding the coldness beneath them, and hummed softly in response.Just then, Shelby walked over holding a long prescription list. With her usual gentle smile, she handed it

My soul, hovering in midair, trembled violently. I had always thought that my deteriorating health after the surgery and my body constantly swelling, no matter what medicine I took, were due to rejection or simply a weak constitution.I had blamed myself for being a useless burden, for dragging the family down. But the truth was, both of my kidneys had been taken, and Samuel's necrotic, toxic kidney had been transplanted into my body!No wonder Samuel recovered so quickly after surgery. He was full of energy, as if nothing had ever happened. Meanwhile, I had been lingering on like a living corpse, suffering endlessly every single day.Mom and Dad felt the world spinning around them, and they nearly lost their balance. "Why… Why would he do this? Sam is our biological son! And Nick is the child we raised! How could Sam be so cruel as to want his brother dead?"Dr. Beaumont pushed his glasses up and said in a calm yet brutal tone, "Mr. Caldwell, we have obtained Mr. Samuel Caldwell's

Mom reached out with trembling hands, wanting to touch the jacket, but stopped in midair. "How is this possible…"The officer said nothing, simply opening a laptop beside him and playing a surveillance video. The footage was from that night three days ago.The riverbank was pitch black. Under the dim streetlights on the bridge, a bloated figure struggled clumsily. There were no cries for help and no thrashing. Just like a rock, he sank heavily downward. Just then, a familiar black Maybach drove onto the bridge. The window was wound down halfway, revealing half of Mom's face as she leaned out. At that instant, the surveillance footage seemed to freeze.Mom stared fixedly at the screen, her mind exploding with a deafening roar. She remembered now. She had indeed seen a dark, lumpy thing floating on the river that night. She had even complained that it was garbage or aquatic weeds. She had covered her nose and urged Dad to drive faster so it wouldn't ruin their mood.It turned out
