Chapter 2

作者: Finicky Finch
The next morning, kitchen smoke woke me.

Tyler stood at the stove frying eggs while grease splattered everywhere.

My marble countertop was covered in oil.

"Morning, future sister-in-law."

He sounded friendly, but the metal spatula in his hand was scraping directly across my nonstick pan.

"Tyler, don't use a metal spatula on that pan."

"You'll ruin the coating."

"Yeah, yeah, sure."

He agreed without changing what he was doing.

Marcus came out of the study, saw me frowning in the kitchen doorway, and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

"Jules, don't be so tense.

"Tyler isn't a stranger.

"He's my brother, which makes him your brother too."

I said nothing and removed his arm from my shoulders.

During breakfast, his mother spoke.

"Jules, this house gets nice light, but it's a little small.

"Once Tyler finds a job here and gets a girlfriend, there won't be enough room."

My fork paused halfway to my mouth.

"Mrs. Caldwell, this is supposed to be Marcus's and my home after we marry.

"Tyler can stay temporarily, but he can't live here permanently."

Her expression hardened, and she set her fork down against her plate.

"What do you mean, permanently?

"This is his brother's house. He needs your permission to stay a few days?

"Marcus, listen to the way your fiancee talks!"

Marcus's fork froze in midair. He glanced at me.

"Mom, Jules didn't mean it that way.

"Tyler can stay until he finds work. We'll discuss it then."

"What does 'then' mean?"

I set down my fork and looked at Marcus.

"How long will it take your brother to find a job? One month? Three months? A year?

"He lives here, I sleep in the guest room, you sleep in the study, and your mother has the primary bedroom.

"Is this our future home or a Caldwell family hostel?"

The room went silent for two seconds.

Tyler chuckled. "Don't be mad, Jules. I'll find something soon."

But when he looked down and kept eating, the corner of his mouth was raised.

I knew he was brushing me off because there was not a trace of embarrassment or shame on his face.

When I came home from working late that afternoon, the garment rack in the guest room was gone.

My clothes had been folded into several piles and left on the bed.

"Jules, put those clothes into storage boxes for now," Marcus called from the study.

"Tyler brought his girlfriend over. She has a lot of things, so we need to make room for her in the guest room."

I stood in the half-emptied room, my fingers whitening around the strap of my purse.

"His girlfriend is moving in too?"

"Only for a few days."

"How many days?"

"Jules..."

"Marcus Caldwell."

I interrupted him, my voice so calm it sounded unfamiliar even to me.

"I contributed $260,000 toward the down payment.

"I paid another $75,000 for the renovation.

"You contributed $140,000 toward the down payment and nothing toward the renovation.

"Now your mother sleeps in the primary bedroom, while I sleep in the guest room.

"And your brother's girlfriend is moving in too.

"I've put more than $335,000 into this home, yet I can't even sleep in the primary bedroom.

"Does that seem reasonable to you?"

Marcus leaned against the study doorframe and remained silent for several seconds.

Then he said the words that finally extinguished something inside me.

"Jules, you keep too careful a score.

"That isn't how people build a life together.

"If you're like this, who would dare spend the rest of his life with you?"

On the day of the hearing, Marcus wore a gray suit and had combed every strand of hair into place. When he saw me at the plaintiff's table beside Adrian, he frowned slightly. He still believed I was bluffing. Then the judge called the hearing to order.Adrian presented the evidence one item at a time.Forensic handwriting report: The signatures on the loan and security agreements were not written by Julia Butterworth and had been forged.Audio recording: Marcus Caldwell personally admitted that he used Julia Butterworth's identity to obtain the loan.Written admission: Marcus Caldwell acknowledged in his own handwriting that Julia had no knowledge of the loan.Bank records: The $120,000 loan proceeds were transferred to Caldwell Wholesale, which was controlled by Tyler Caldwell.Property records: The authorization used to record the second mortgage had also been forged. With every exhibit, more color drained from Marcus's face. His attorney flipped through the documents, swe

The day after receiving the recording and written admission, Adrian filed three sets of documents at once.A request for forensic handwriting analysis.A request to authenticate the signatures on the loan and security agreements. And a criminal complaint for identity theft and forgery. The emergency property order was already in effect, preventing any transfer.Marcus was in a company meeting when the court summons reached him.He called me, sounding like an entirely different man."Julia, you set me up?"You'll pay for this!"Your father is still in the hospital. Are you sure you want to destroy both of us?""Marcus, I recorded every threat you just made."I ended the call. That afternoon, Marcus and his mother stormed the entrance to Natalie's apartment building. The building had controlled access, so they could not get inside and began making a scene at the gate. His mother sat on the pavement wailing until half the residents came to watch."My future daughter-in-law

Marcus exploded the day the court issued the emergency property order. He called more than twenty times. I answered none of them. Finally, he sent a voice message, each word squeezed through clenched teeth."Julia, you froze my property?"Have you lost your mind?"You think you can beat me in court?"My name is on the deed. The law protects me!"At most, you can recover the loan. You'll never take the house from me!"I forwarded the message to Adrian."He's panicking.""Panic makes people careless," Adrian replied almost immediately."Jules, the next step is crucial."We need him to admit in his own words that he used your identity to obtain the loan without your knowledge."With that recording and the handwriting analysis, the evidentiary chain will be complete.""How do I make him admit it?""Go see him."Act defeated."He responds to submission, not confrontation. The stronger you appear, the more guarded he becomes."But if you cry, ask to settle, and pretend you'

Adrian told me not to alert Marcus yet."The gift agreement is only a draft. It hasn't been signed or recorded, so it has no legal effect."But if you confront him now, he may rush to complete the transfer."You need to act before he does."First, seek an emergency injunction and record a notice preventing any transfer of the property."Second, report the forged signature and identity theft."Third, organize every piece of evidence and present the entire case at once."I stayed with Natalie, worked during the day, and sorted evidence every night. On the third evening, someone from Human Resources called."Julia, someone reported that you have substantial undisclosed debt that could affect the company's reputation."The chief executive wants you to explain tomorrow."My fingers turned cold around the phone.Marcus.He had begun attacking my job.The next morning, the chief executive and corporate counsel were waiting in the conference room.A stack of printed loan records

By the time I reached the county hospital, my father's surgery was over and he had been moved to intensive care. The doctor said his life had been saved, but rehabilitation would become a financial black hole."You should expect at least another forty thousand dollars."Your family needs to prepare for a long recovery."Forty thousand dollars.Added to the sixty thousand for surgery, the total was one hundred thousand.I sat on a plastic chair outside intensive care and buried my face in my hands. My phone rang with a voice message from Marcus."Jules, do you have enough money?"If not, I can help you borrow a little more."I opened the second message."Also, Mom says her back has been hurting badly. When you return, take her to the university hospital."Cover the appointment and imaging fees first."I stared at the screen and laughed. It was the kind of laugh that came when fury had gone beyond words. My father lay in intensive care with tubes in his body, and Marcus wa

The attorney's name was Adrian Whitmore, a former classmate of Natalie's who specialized in domestic property and financial disputes. On the day we met, I carried an entire bag of documents and rode the subway for half an hour to reach his office. After reviewing everything, he removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose."Ms. Butterworth, this is more complicated than you realize."His name is on the deed. That's an established fact."The second-mortgage loan used your personal information, but the security agreement contains your signature.""I never signed a security agreement.""Then the signature was forged?""I don't know."I bit my lip and tried to remember.Marcus had possessed my identification for three days, which gave him time to do many things.Including having someone imitate my signature."Even if it was forged, proving that requires a forensic handwriting examination."That process will take at least two or three months."Meanwhile, if the loan g
