Breed stood in the doorway and studied her. She looked to be sleeping again, but he knew she was healing from the trauma of the last few days.

Cowboy joined him and silently they moved away from the door.

Breed led the way down to his office and then poured a shot for both of them before he spoke, “Is she doing okay?” he asked his medic softly.

“Physically? Yeah, she’ll recover from the beating she took.” He shrugged his shoulders. “She’s a tough chick and this isn’t her first rodeo, I’m thinking.”

“What else?” Breed demanded. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“She talks in her sleep, did you know that?” Cowboy asked him.

“Now, how would I know something like that?” Breed glared at him. “I just met the woman.”

“Well, she does. And her grandfather is a real bastard. He took a scared fourteen year old girl who had just lost her parents and worked her like a slave.”

“What did she say?” Breed was curious.

Cowboy shook his head. “She was worried about missing the party Monday night, how her grandfather would be so disappointed in her and how she owed him money for everything he did for her while she lived with him.”

“What do you mean?” Breed frowned.

“She was so out of it, that when I tried to ask her questions, she answered them but she didn’t realize it, I don’t think.” Cowboy looked pissed off as he went on, “She kept saying in her sleep how she owed and would be in trouble now. I asked her for what. He got the insurance money from her parents like she told you but the old bastard didn’t want to take her. He was going to let her go into the system until he learned he wouldn’t get the insurance money. Then I asked her more detailed questions and I learned that he turned around and kept track of every penny he spent on her and when she started working, she had to pay that money back. He was taking half her check for his payback even though he got over a million dollars from the insurance when her parents died. That’s why she was so agitated, she did not make it to hostess his party and he would be angry with her.”

“Fucking hell.” Breed growled. “No wonder she said she hated to love him and loved to hate him. It didn’t make sense to me before now.”

Cowboy nodded. “I believe that. It sounds about right from what she said. Brian Williams really needs a wakeup call.”

Breed agreed with him. “I got some of the brothers checking things out. Two are going to watch Joey and grandpa and two are going to spy on Blade and his bastards. If they find out she’s here with us, they will come for her and try to start a war none one of us wants.”

“Now boss…” Cowboy stared. “You know that ain’t true. Blade would do it in a heartbeat if he could get to you. He really hates the fact that you’re his half brother. He’s blaming you for something his bastard father did before either of you were even born.”

“That’s true enough but he’s probably more pissed about what I did to his father’s headstone.” Breed chuckled.

“He was your dad too, though,” Cowboy pointed out.

“No he was never my dad, he was just a sperm donor.” Breed snapped. “An unwanted sperm donor at that. I hope that old bastard is burning in hell for what he did to my mother.” For a moment, he hesitated, then Breed asked, “What else did she say?”

“She was begging Joey not to hurt her anymore.”

With a soft growl, Breed picked up his glass and threw it against the wall. Glass shattered everywhere when it hit. He then roared his rage and stalked toward the door.

“Boss, “ Cowboy called out. “You can’t change what happened in her past, only in her future.”

“I know that and I know it’s crazy to feel this way about someone I only just met but nothing infuriates me more than when a man abuses a woman.” Breed turned and went out to the main room.

The men all looked up, as some were getting ready to leave.

“I want that little bastard Joey and this Brian fuck brought back here,” Breed ordered. “Both of them have to answer for what they did.”

“Boss,” Maverick called out. “That’s kidnapping if you take them across state lines.”

Breed ignored him and went on, “Crow, I want everything you can find on the way this man does business. This bastard not only took her parent’s insurance money but is making her pay back every penny he laid out to keep her for the three years after they died. I want to bust him so bad that I can almost taste it. That insurance money should have gone to her.”

“What about Joey?” someone called out.

“I think he was looking to get her killed. I think he was going to take the money shitty grandpa would have paid and taken off for parts unknown. I can’t prove it yet, but I can feel it in my gut.”

The men all looked uneasy as a silence fell in the large room.

Breed looked around. “What? Just fucking spit it out already!”

Greer was the brave one as he finally spoke up, “Why are you doing this? Involving us? I mean I admit, the poor girl suffered but—”

“—she did and it was under my brother’s boots,” Breed shot back. “Also, I rescued her. In my tribe, that makes me responsible for her.” He looked around at the more than a dozen men gathered. “Besides, aren’t you sick of this shit?”

They all looked puzzled as some shook their heads in confusion.

Breed caught sight of something in Brian’s hand.Kizzy straightened her body and let out a heavy sigh. “I-I didn’t feel much when you told me Joey had… But I feel grief over Brian. I just can’t help it. He’d raised me since I was little.”Breed stood her up. “I get it.”Her tear stained eyes looked up at him. “You do though, don’t you?”He shook his head, “Kizzy—”She placed her fingers on his lips, cutting his denial off. “You have a brother. But…”“But what?” Kizzy asked.“Joey took a shot at me.”With a scared gasp, Kizzy stepped close to him and grabbed the sleeve of his shirt. He tucked her in close, next to him. “Blade tossed himself in front of me and took the bullet?”Gasps could be heard from all over the room.“What?” Shyla exclaimed. “That’s not…” Her voice fell away.“So, is he…?” Kizzy asked.“No…” Breed paused. “Well, Cowboy said it was bad.”“So Brian is still okay?” Kizzy asked.Breed dropped his gaze to her. “Yes and no.”“What?”“He told me…” Breed shook his head.“What?” she asked.“He said that he would not die by Joey’s bullet. That he would be dying a whole different way. Then he said he wanted me to take care of you and make sure you were happy.”Kizzy’s eyes widened. “No…” She even managed to laugh. “You must have misunderstood.”Breed slowly shook his head. “No…I understood it clearly.”So,” Crow broke the stunned silence.” Basically, you ar

With a gaping, bloody hole between his eyes, Joel’s body slid slowly down the wall to land on the floor in a heap.He had flown past Brian, who now looked down at him.No one moved for a few seconds, as they all tried to take in what just occurred. Then everyone scrambled for the pair on the floor.Brick reached down for his prez, who shook him off.Cowboy knelt next to Breed, checking him over. Rain knelt down by Blade. Then with Bear’s help they turned Blade’s body over to find his chest covered in blood. His eyes were closed while his chest was bleeding profusely.Breed had risen to his feet and gazed down in disbelief at the man he’d hated for most of his life. He raised his gaze and sought out Brick.Brick stared down at Blade as well. Then he looked up at his President and whispered, “Why would he take a bullet for you, boss?”“The fuck if I know, but when he recovers, I plan to ask that question.” Breed growled.Rain was already attempting to stop the bleeding. “You mean if he

Joey paused then said, “What was it Matt told me about Brian? Oh yeah, some ancient Indian spirits came and made him face his worst crimes against his fellow man. That should have taken a whole week though, right?” He gazed over at Brian. “I bet it put your ass in a tailspin, old man.” He paused to laugh again as tears leaked from his eyes. “Did those spirits take what was left of your soul? Nah… you don’t have one of those, I suppose. Did they finally take you on a trip to hell where you belong, grandpa?”Brian just blinked at his grandson as if he didn’t even understand what the man just said, or he didn’t care. Then he turned his head and stared at Babe. He gasped when he saw her blonde hair and deep blue eyes. He stood up slowly and began to back away from her. He didn’t stop until he got to the wall and couldn’t go any further. No one said a word for a long moment, as they all stared at him.His face had paled and his wide eyes were glued to Babe. He looked damn near terrified.Th

Twila turned to Babe and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. “When I found you on the highway that day, you were the answer to a prayer. I took you in and loved you as one of my own but I knew you didn’t belong to me. At least, not only to me. I can’t blame you for trying to find out.” “I love you both…” Babe paused to look over at Bear. “I’ve been happy all these years and I don’t want to leave here but I need to know my own name.”Twila raised her head and met Breed’s gaze. “Can you honor her request? Can you help her find out who she really is and what happened the day her parents died?”Breed paused and studied her for a moment. “It won’t be easy and I make no promises. We can ask Brian but I’m not sure he would even remember eighteen days ago, let alone eighteen years ago. He might even hide the truth despite being insane. The Ancestors really messed with his mind.” He looked over at Brick and nodded at Blade. “Make sure to cuff him but bring him along.”Brick nodded an

Breed turned to his man and told him calmly, “Brick, put the gun away before it goes off.”Brick’s lips tightened as he held his piece a little tighter. For a moment, he looked like wanted to argue with his prez but he followed Breed’s orders. He slid his gun back into the waistband of his jeans.“Now someone better tell me what the fuck in going on here.” Breed growled.Babe stepped away from Blade. She swiftly swiped the tears from her face with both hands. “This was all my idea,” she began to explain. “It was my fault. I needed to know something and I came here to ask him something. He didn’t know I was coming and he never asked me to set him free.”Breed frowned as he studied her. “What did you come to ask him?”Babe wiped her face again and stood a little straighter. “You may or may not know my story, the way I came to be with the tribe but eighteen years ago, Twila found me along the road in Alabama. I was lost then and I’m still sort of lost today. She gave me the name Babe as
