Chapter 4

Author: Foxfall1
At eleven that night, Hunter still hadn't come home. I sat in the living room of our new house and went through the wedding schedule from beginning to end.

My name appeared only twice. It didn't look like a wedding for Hunter and me.

At 1:00 am, I heard the lock click.

Hunter walked in, carrying the smell of disinfectant with him. When he saw that I was still sitting there, he frowned. "You're still awake?"

I asked, "Where are the earrings?"

His hand paused as he loosened his tie. "Tiff still has to film a video tomorrow morning. Let her keep them for now."

I stood up and demanded, "Go get them back now."

His expression darkened, and the patience in his eyes slowly disappeared. "Natalie, the person I'm marrying tomorrow is you. What else do you want?"

"I want my things back," I replied.

Hunter suddenly let out a quiet, mocking laugh. His voice was soft, yet unbearably arrogant. "Tiffany only borrowed the earrings for a moment, and you can't even tolerate that? Natalie, don't be so greedy."

I stared at him blankly. So in his eyes, I was greedy for asking for my mother's keepsake back.

Just then, Gabriel called and said urgently, "Hunter, something bad happened. Tiff says the earrings are missing."

My body stiffened.

Half an hour later, we arrived backstage at the hotel. Tiffany sat in front of the makeup mirror, wrapped in Hunter's jacket. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying.

The makeup table was a complete mess. The only thing missing was the pair of pearl earrings my mother had left me.

I asked the makeup artist, "What about the security footage?"

The makeup artist lowered her head. "The cameras malfunctioned this afternoon."

What a coincidence.

I looked at Tiffany and said, "Give them back."

Tears immediately rolled down her cheeks. "Natalie, I really didn't take them."

Steadily, I proposed, "Then let's call the police."

The moment my words fell, Tiffany's face turned pale. She threw herself toward the wall and screamed, "It's all my fault! I never should've touched your things! I might as well die!"

Hunter grabbed her at once. Gabriel also rushed over to support her. The two of them stood on either side, shielding her between them.

Hunter turned back to look at me, his eyes ice-cold. "Apologize."

I thought I had misheard him. "What did you say?"

"Apologize to her," he said, each word clear and deliberate. "She's already falling apart. How much further are you going to push her?"

I looked at him in disbelief. "Hunter, she lost my mother's keepsake."

"She already said she didn't do it on purpose."

"Just because she said she didn't do it on purpose, you're taking her word for it?"

"Do you have any evidence that she did it on purpose, then?"

I couldn't answer him.

Gabriel also tried to persuade me softly. "Natalie, just back down already. You've already won. Why make things difficult for Tiffany?"

I looked at all of them and suddenly felt exhausted.

Tiffany had so obviously won. Yet, everyone insisted that she was the pitiful one.

So, I nodded. I didn't want to put up a fight anymore.

"Fine."

The backstage area fell silent for a moment. Hunter frowned, as though he hadn't expected me to agree so quickly. Gabriel froze as well.

I turned toward Tiffany. She was still hiding behind Hunter with tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry," I said.

Gabriel looked at me, and his lips moved slightly. "Natalie…"

I didn't spare any of them another glance. I took off my engagement ring and gently placed it on the makeup table. "The wedding can go on as planned tomorrow. Don't let me ruin everyone's mood."

With that, I turned and walked toward the exit.

Hunter seemed about to say something.

But Tiffany suddenly clutched her neck, her voice trembling as she whined, "Hunter… it hurts so much…"

Hunter instinctively turned back, and Gabriel immediately looked at her as well.

In that brief moment, I walked out of the backstage area. By the time they looked back again, the door had already closed.

And I never looked back.

That night, I returned to my new house and canceled every single wedding reservation, one by one.

The wedding planner answered my call in the middle of the night, panic evident in her voice. She asked, "Does Mr. Sinclair know?"

"He doesn't need to."

Before dawn, I would leave this place with my suitcase.

On the morning of the wedding, Hunter personally went to the jewelry store at ten o'clock. He picked out the pear-shaped diamond ring at first glance.

Looking down at the ring, he commented, "She's liked this shape ever since she was 18."

Gabriel was holding a black umbrella with a long handle. My name was engraved on the handle.

He chuckled and said, "I've got something too. She still remembered that rainy day when we were 18."

Hunter glanced at him. "So you knew about that?"

The smile on Gabriel's face faded slightly. "Yeah."

After a pause, he said, "She apologized too quickly last night."

Hunter let out a dismissive snort. "She was just tired. After making a fuss all night, she had to find herself a way out."

Gabriel nodded in agreement. "I guess you're right."

He smiled and added, "Natalie has a soft heart. You've got the ring, I've got the umbrella. Once she sees these, she definitely won't be able to stay mad."

When the two of them arrived at the hotel, the manager was directing the workers to dismantle the welcome sign.

Hunter stopped in his tracks. "Who told you to take it down?"

The manager was surprised to see him. "Mr. Sinclair, wasn't the wedding called off?"

As the bus doors closed, Hunter and Gabriel ran after it. Nevertheless, the bus still drove away.I sat by the window and never looked back. Outside the window, their figures grew smaller and smaller. The scene was like an old photograph washed out by the rain.I lowered my head and opened the box containing the earrings. The pearls were still there, but one of them now bore a faint scratch.I gently brushed it with my finger. My heart still ached, but it was no longer unbearable. People always had to carry a few scars as they moved forward. It would be fine as long as they didn't stay where they were, letting the same blade cut them over and over again.…By the time I arrived in Normuth, it was already dark.A coworker from my new company came to pick me up. She was a round-faced young woman named Ivy Zeller. The moment she saw me dragging my suitcase, she immediately ran over to help. "You're Ms. Lawson, right? Welcome! How was the trip? Tiring? I bought you a hot cup of

I boarded the earliest bus to Normuth. It was an old bus, and the seats were a little stiff. A slight breeze drifted in through the open window. Sitting by the window, I felt lighter than I ever had before. In my bag was a new job offer. I had secured a position as an administrative supervisor at a media company in Normuth. The salary wasn't really that high, but it was enough to support myself.More importantly, no one there knew Hunter. No one knew Gabriel either. No one would tell me to be generous whenever I was the one who had been hurt.By the time the bus left the city, the rain had stopped. Sunlight streamed through a small break in the clouds.Looking out the window, I suddenly remembered something Hunter had asked me a long time ago."Natalie, why are you so easily satisfied?"Back then, he had bought me a cup of hot milk. I had held it in my hands and sipped it the entire way home. I had been so happy that it seemed as though I had received the most wonderful gift in

Gabriel found the former property manager downstairs from my apartment.I had already moved out. The landlord told him I had left before dawn, taking only a single suitcase with me.Standing in the now-empty apartment, Gabriel noticed a lone white sock still hanging on the balcony. It was small and swaying gently in the wind.Suddenly, he remembered that many years ago, I had always followed behind them. Hunter walked fast, so I would jog to keep up. Gabriel couldn't bear to leave me behind, so he would stop and wait for me.Back then, I would smile and call out, "You're the best, Gabriel!"And then, Tiffany came into our lives. She cried. She was afraid of the dark. She trembled. She said she never felt safe. After she appeared, everyone started saying the same things to me."Natalie, let her have it.""Natalie, you're stronger.""Natalie, don't take it to heart."Gabriel had said those things too. He said them so many times that even he came to believe them. He believed I t

Chaos erupted backstage at the hotel. Hunter had people search every corner of the dressing room. Tiffany kept crying until her voice turned hoarse. "Hunter, I really didn't take them. Why does Natalie keep suspecting me?"In the past, Hunter would always go soft on her whenever she cried like this. But today, he simply stood in front of the makeup mirror and stared at her coldly. He demanded, "I'm asking you one last time. Where are the earrings?"Tiffany was so stunned that her tears stopped.Gabriel frowned. "Don't scare her, Hunter. She's timid."Hunter scoffed in response. "She's timid?"He grabbed the wedding schedule booklet from the table and hurled it hard into Gabriel's chest.Hunter fumed, "You say she's timid? She turned herself into the star at Natalie's wedding. Then, she made arrangements to wear Natalie's mother's keepsake to film a video. Don't forget she made Natalie apologize to her backstage. How is she timid?"The impact forced Gabriel to take half a step

I turned my phone back on while I was on the way to the cemetery. The moment the screen lit up, message after message flooded in. I received messages from Hunter, Gabriel, and even Lena. I didn't open any of them. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. "Getting married today, young lady?"I lowered my eyes to the veil in my hands. The sales associate at the bridal boutique had run after me yesterday to give it back.I had wanted to throw it away. But in the end, I still brought it with me. It was because I had chosen that veil myself.Once upon a time, I had really yearned to marry Hunter. I had wanted it so badly that I secretly rewrote my wedding vows over and over behind his back. I had wanted to say "I do" a little more softly because I was afraid I couldn't stop myself from crying when saying it.By the time the car stopped at the entrance to the cemetery, it had started raining again. I didn't have an umbrella. I hadn't had one on that night when I was 18,

The moment the manager finished speaking, the ring box slipped from Hunter's hand and hit the floor with a sharp snap. The pear-shaped diamond rolled out and bumped against the toe of his dress shoe. The smile on Gabriel's face froze as well. "What did you just say?"The manager was startled by his reaction and hurriedly handed over a tablet. "At 4:00 am, Ms. Lawson personally called to cancel every part of the wedding. The hotel banquet, the decorations, the photography and videography, the band, the floral arrangements—everything was canceled."She also said that if Mr. Sinclair didn't agree, we could send the cancellation fee directly to her."Hunter stared at the screen. Under the confirmation field, my name, "Natalie Lawson", was written clearly. The time read 4:17 am.It was as if he had finally processed what he was seeing. He immediately took out his phone and called me.The mechanical voice repeated itself over and over. "The number you have dialed is unavailable."Hunt
