A forbidden night… changed it all… Kaia is pregnant with the Alpha's baby, and is hunted, abandoned and nearly killed by her own family before being saved by a rogue Alpha. At last, for the first time in her life, she thought she had found love, safety and a home. But soon, her son begins to die. As secrets are uncovered, Kaia learns that the man she trusted the most was using forbidden black magic to steal her child's rare powers. But as enemies swarm around her, Kaia makes her way back to the arms of the Alpha she once ran from, the same Alpha who unwittingly replaced her with another woman. But this time it is different, Alpha Draven knows who she was and is willing to give up everything for her, even his wolf.

Chapter 1

The alpha’s substitute concubine

Kaia’s POV

I was standing by the door of the dining hall with a basket of my neatly folded clothes in my arms and two servants walked past carrying a sparkling silver gown towards my sister's chamber.

“How beautiful is that one,” one servant whispered excitedly. “The Alpha will certainly pick Lady Selene.”

“He must,” said the other. “She is the most beautiful girl in the Eastern Regions.”

As they walked by neither of them looked at me.

I looked down and moved away from the woman, and went to the laundry room.

I was used to it.

In this house I didn't really exist.

“Kaia!”

Before I could get to the stairs, my mother's sharp voice rang out through the hallway.

I immediately stopped walking and turned around. “Yes, Mother?”

Helena Ravencrest, who was dressed in a dark green silk gown and stood in the center hall.

“Why are you here?” she asked. “Why are you not helping Selene?”

“Well, I was washing my clothes first,” I said quietly.

“So who was it that told you that was more important than your sister's preparations?”

“I—I just thought—”

“You thought?” she snarled. “When did girl that doesn't have a wolf get to think for herself?”

There were several servants around who flinched down.

I felt heat in my face but I didn't say a word.

It was no use defending myself any longer. It only made matters worse.

My mother came closer and put her bracelet on my wrist with irritation. “Tomorrow, important Alphas will come to the palace, along with nobles, and you don't want to embarrass us. So stop thinking of what to wear to the palace and begin helping Selene! Do you understand?”

“I understand.”

“By the way , during the ceremony, you will not be seen by anyone or importance and even if you are ,” she coldly continued. “Don't talk unless spoken to, don't make yourself known, and for once in your miserable life, don't ruin things for your sister.”

I held the basket tight in my hands. “Yes, Mother.”

She waved and sent me away before she turned back towards the servants.

I walked away stealthily.

When I got to my room, I finally let out a slow breath.

I had pain in my chest, but I didn't pay any attention to it.

I should be past caring about their insults by now, at 22 years old.

But hearing it a day at a time never got easier.

Wolfless.

Worthless.

Disgrace.

Those words were repeated so many times that they sounded like my own name.

I gently placed my clothes on the bed. When it came to bedrooms, my bedroom was simple and quiet – unlike Selene's luxurious one. No furniture or decorations, just a little bed next to the window , a small wardrobe filled with hand-me-downs from my sister.

The only beautiful thing I had was nicely tucked away in my bottom drawer.

I closed the door behind me, then I sat on the floor next to the bed and took out a small wooden box.

A silver moon necklace was lying on the inside.

My fingers caressed the crescent-shape pendant lightly.

It was my Granny's.

Only one person in this family that loved me equally.

Although everyone found out that I had been born without a wolf, she was still kind to me. She'd always say to me that I was born for something, whatever the world wanted.

Before she died, she gave me the necklace.

“Kaia, she said, “Keep this close.” “One day, it will tell you that you are the one who is in control of your life.”

I swallowed the tightness in my throat and held the necklace in my hand, carefully.

Suddenly, there was a knock on my door.

I didn't get a chance to respond when Selene walked in.

She was always so beautiful.

Her dark brown hair cascaded flawlessly over her shoulders and her fitted cream dress gave her a look like the future royal concubine our parents wished she could be.

Her eyes right away fell upon the necklace I held.

“Oh,” she said slowly. “There it is.”

I frowned slightly. “What?”

Selene came closer and picked up the necklace without permission. “This is what I've been searching for.”

I quickly pulled my hand away. “Why?”

“Well, I need to wear it tomorrow.”

My brow knitted into a deep frown. “No, you’re not.”

Selene looked at me in a way that I could tell was a joke. “Oh, Kaia, don't be too dramatic, it looks a lot like my gown.”

“It was Grandma’s.”

“And?”

“And she gave it to me.”

Selene rolled her eyes impatiently. “You hardly ever come out of this room. So what is the purpose of wearing jewellery?”

I slowly rose to my feet, holding the necklace tightly. “It’s mine.”

Selene's face grew expressions of the hardships.

The room was suddenly deathly quiet.

Then she laughed softly.

“Why do you need this?” she jeered. “Nobody cares about you.”

The words struck me more than they were intended to.

I tried to keep my head above water, though. “Please leave it alone.”

Suddenly, Selene jumped up and caught my wrist.

“For the once and for all, stop being selfish,” she snapped. “Do you know what is going on tomorrow? It's me who will save this family's life.”

I pulled my hand out of his. “You have all you need right

“Except this one!”she replied right away. “Give me!”

There was a breaking point within me.

I couldn't help but shove her hand away hard.

Selene took a deep gasp of air in shock.

“There's nothing you can do to take the only thing that's left for me!" I shouted.

Her eyes widened.

But her face was twisted in anger.

“But how would you dare to speak to me like that? You useless dog!”

She tried to snatch the necklace several times once more.

I moved back quickly in an effort to protect it, but Selene seized my arm, gripping it with a firm grip. Near the entrance we fought, each of us wanted to get away.

“Let go!” I yelled.

“You are a pathetic piece of shit,” she shouted back.

Then suddenly—

Her foot slipped.

Time stood still.

Selene's eyes went wide, her body swayed towards the staircase outside my room, and her mouth opened in a gasp.

I extended my arm towards her, but my fingers only just grazed her sleeve and she fell back.

A shriek came from her throat.

Her body slammed into the stairs, then fell down.

A sound reverberated throughout the entire mansion.

For one terrible moment there was silence.

Then chaos erupted.

“Selene!”

The footsteps crashed through the hallway and servants screamed.

My heart stopped.

I looked at the foot of the stairs where Selene was crisscrossed and twisted in agony on the marble.

A stream of blood was dripping from the corner of her forehead.

My mother ran towards me, shouting "Selene!".

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

A few moments later, my father came into view, Magnus knelt beside Selene, carefully looking at her leg.

As soon as he touched it, Selene cried out in pain.

His face grew dark instantly.

“It's broken,” he said grimly.

My mother was horrified and covered her mouth.

“No…” she whispered.

Father stood slowly.

“She won't be able to attend tomorrow's ceremony.”

The whole hall was silent.

The servants even ceased their movement.

I was shivering in every part of my body.

Selene started to breathe rapidly and tears were rolling down her face. “Father… no… please…”

“I’m sorry my dear… you can not attend the ceremony like this.” My father said, looking at her ss though she was the most precious thing in the world.

Then slowly…

My mother looked at me.

Her eyes were burning with anger and my stomach clenched in pain.

Her voice was low and deadly.

“You…to your room now! I’ll deal with you later!”
