Damien's POV

The moment her hand had touched mine, something inside my chest had eased — not gone, never fully gone, but quieter, the way a scream finally allowed to drop into a whisper after hours of raw-throated agony. I hadn't known relief could feel that specific, that tied to one person's skin against mine.

I hadn't expected it to hit me the way it did. I'd braced myself for her anger, for coldness sharp enough to cut, for the very real possibility she'd take one look at me and walk straight back out that door without a single word spared for me. I hadn't braced myself for the way my whole body would recognize her touch like something coming up for air after too long underwater — instant, involuntary, entirely outside anything I could control or explain away.

"That reaction," Elder Mackenzie said, returning to my room once Dara had gone, studying the veins along my wrist with new and unmistakable intensity, "was stronger than I anticipated. Considerably stronger than the texts suggested it should be."

"Meaning what, exactly?" I pushed myself straighter against the headboard, ignoring the way the movement pulled hard at muscles gone stiff with pain, ignoring the fresh throb it sent lancing straight up through my ribs.

"Meaning the bond isn't merely wounded, Alpha. It's *responsive*. Actively, specifically responsive to her, in a way I haven't seen documented in this pack's records for generations." Mackenzie's brow furrowed deep, the exact expression she wore whenever some piece of a larger puzzle stubbornly refused to sit where logic insisted it should. She crossed to the small writing desk in the corner, retrieving a worn leather journal I recognized as one of the pack's oldest surviving texts, its spine cracked from decades of careful handling. "The Adeyemi bloodline has always carried old rumors alongside it. Guardian blood, some of the ancient records call it — blood tied directly to the original pact struck between the first wolves and the Moon Goddess herself, long before this pack, before any of our current bloodlines existed at all. I confess I dismissed it as superstition once. The kind of story elders tell to explain away coincidence and comfort themselves in the process."

"And now?" I pressed, though some quiet part of me already suspected the answer, already felt it settling cold and certain low in my gut.

"Now I am no longer certain it was ever superstition at all." She met my eyes directly, something careful and unsettled behind her own. "If the Adeyemi line truly descends from Guardian blood, it would explain a great deal, Alpha. It would explain why the bond between the two of you formed as strongly as it did, faster and deeper than most fated bonds I've personally witnessed in forty years of service to this pack. It would explain why her mere proximity eases the curse instead of simply masking its symptoms temporarily. And it would explain, rather uncomfortably for all of us, why your mother was so determined to see this particular match dissolved before it could ever fully take root and grow beyond her control."

A cold understanding moved through me, replacing the physical ache for one sharp, clarifying moment of absolute clarity. "You think my mother knew. From the very start. Before any of this happened."

"I think," Mackenzie said carefully, choosing each word like she was setting stones across ground she didn't fully trust, "your mother has always known considerably more than she has ever shared with either of us, Alpha. I think the story of a cursed bloodline was never truly about protecting this pack from ruin at all. I think it was about protecting something else entirely — something closer to home than any of us realized."

I closed my eyes, the weight of it settling heavy alongside pain already carved deep into my chest. Every version of this story I had ever been told — the danger of the Adeyemi line, the necessity of the rejection, the protection of the pack's future above all else — had come from my mother's mouth, and my mother's mouth alone. I had built the single worst decision of my entire life on nothing but her word, freely given and never once questioned.

"Find out what she knows." My voice came out low, steady despite the exhaustion dragging at every syllable I forced out. "Whatever it costs you, Elder. I need the truth now. Not her version of it. Not anymore, not after tonight."

Mackenzie inclined her head slowly, resolve settling into the careful lines of her weathered face. "I'll do what I can, discreetly, for now — your mother is not a woman who reveals her hand willingly, as you well know better than most." She paused at the door, glancing back at me with something that might have been sympathy, or something close enough to it. "For what it's worth, Alpha — whatever your mother's true reasons turn out to be, whatever truth we eventually uncover between us, the girl who walked through that door today didn't come back for herself. She came back in spite of every single reason not to. That's not nothing, whatever else proves true. Hold onto that, if nothing else."

She left me alone with that thought, and the ache in my chest — the one that had nothing at all to do with any curse — settled in for what I suspected would be a very long stay indeed.

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Forty-Seven: A Message Left Behind

Dara's POV The arrow struck the training ground post just before dawn, embedded deep enough that it took Eze considerable effort to work it free, a small scroll tied carefully to its shaft. "Someone got close enough to fire this without triggering the outer wards," he said grimly, unrolling the parchment with visible tension. "That alone tells us considerably more than whatever message they've left." Damien arrived moments later, alerted by the guard who'd discovered the arrow, his expression hardening as Eze read the message aloud. "*'Your informant's loss changes nothing. We have patience your pack lacks. The Guardian will come to us eventually, willingly or otherwise. Consider this a courtesy, rather than a threat: we would prefer cooperation to conflict, but we will not hesitate toward the latter if forced.'*" The words settled cold and unwelcome across the training ground, and I felt old fear resurface despite weeks of building strength and confidence. "They're not backing d

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Forty-Six: Judgment Before the Pack

Damien's POV The great hall filled quickly once word spread of the formal council judgment, pack members gathering in tense, murmuring clusters as Ferris was brought forward, flanked by two warriors, his expression carrying the particular hollow fear of someone facing consequences he'd clearly hoped to avoid. I took my place at the head of the gathered council, my mother seated to my right in her formal capacity as Alpha Mother, and Elder Mackenzie to my left, representing the pack's historical and legal authority. Dara sat among the witnesses rather than the council itself, though I noted several pack members glancing toward her throughout the proceedings, uncertain how to categorize her position within our particular crisis. "Ferris Okonkwo," I began, my voice carrying the formal weight the occasion demanded. "You stand accused of providing sensitive pack information to the Unbound faction, information subsequently used to endanger pack safety and specifically threaten Dara Adeye

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Forty-Five: Someone Close

Dara's POV The morning after the fire brought grim accounting rather than relief—burned storehouses assessed, rationing plans drafted, and exhausted warriors finally permitted rest after a night of coordinated crisis response. But it was Mackenzie's private summons to the archive room, delivered with unusual urgency, that settled real dread back into my chest despite the previous night's narrow success. "I need to show you something," she said without preamble, once Damien, Eze, and I had gathered around the familiar table. "Something troubling, uncovered while reviewing the fire's origin." "The fire wasn't accidental," Damien said, more statement than question, old tension returning to his exhausted features. "No. Deliberately set and set with precision that required detailed knowledge of the storehouse's construction, specifically which support beams would create maximum spread with minimum initial detection." Mackenzie's expression carried grave concern. "That's not infor

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Forty-Four: Smoke on the Western Ridge

Damien's POV The alarm horn sounded just past midnight, sharp and urgent, and I was on my feet before full wakefulness caught up with instinct, old Alpha reflexes carrying me toward the window before conscious thought fully registered what I was seeing. Fire. Distant, but unmistakable, orange light flickering against the western horizon where the pack's grain stores sat clustered near the outer boundary. Kai burst through my door moments later, already armed, his expression grim with urgent purpose. "Western storehouses. Full blaze, spreading fast toward the residential quarter if we don't respond immediately." Every instinct screamed at me to move, to gather warriors, and to race toward the fire, and I felt my body already turning toward action before Mackenzie's warning from days earlier crashed through the urgency like cold water. A diversion, historically. Creating a crisis elsewhere, specifically designed to draw protective forces away from their actual target. "Wait." The

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Forty-Three: A Shadow at the Tree Line

Dara's POV Timi found me during the mid-morning training session, her usual restless energy replaced by something sharper, more urgent, and I knew before she spoke that whatever peace the past few days had offered was about to fracture again. "Someone's been watching the training grounds," she said, keeping her voice low despite the distance between us and the nearest guard. "Not Unbound scouts moving carelessly, like before. Someone experienced. I only caught the edge of their presence because I was specifically looking for it." Eze straightened immediately, all business. "Where?" "The tree line, northeast corner. They're gone now—slipped away the moment I got close enough to properly track them. But they were there for at least an hour, based on the ground sign I found." Timi's expression carried grim frustration. "Whoever it was, they know exactly what they're doing. This wasn't a careless probe like the ones we caught before." I felt old dread resettle in my chest, the peace

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Forty-Two: Corinne's Offering

Dara's POV Lady Corinne requested my presence alone, a request that arrived via formal note delivered by one of her attendants, careful and deliberate in a way that made me study the words twice before agreeing. I found her in the small garden behind the pack house, tending to a bed of moonflowers with her own hands rather than leaving the work to staff, something I hadn't expected from a woman who'd always struck me as too composed for such quiet, ordinary labor. "Thank you for coming." She didn't look up immediately, continuing to work the soil around a newly planted seedling. "I wasn't certain you would, given everything between us." "I almost didn't," I admitted honestly, settling onto the garden bench a careful distance away. "Curiosity won out over caution in the end." "Fair enough." She finished with the seedling before finally meeting my eyes, something unguarded in her expression that I hadn't witnessed from her before. "I wanted to speak with you directly, without Damie
