Chapter 4. Roots and Shadows.

Becky’s POV.

I got out of the airport, cold air carrying the unmistakable scent of pine and damp earth that only my pack lands had. The familiarity hit me like a punch to the gut, stirring a wave of emotions I wasn’t ready to face. Five years away from this place, and yet it still felt like home.

Dragging my suitcase behind me, I adjusted the strap of my bag on my shoulder and took a deep breath. Things would be different now. I was different now. I’d spent five years in the human world, working, studying, and building a life of independence. But the memory of why I left—the rejection, the pain—still lingered in the back of my mind, a ghost that refused to fade completely.

The airport was as quiet as I remembered. I was glad to see that that didn't change with the five years I was gone. I stopped in my tracks, remembering I didn't return alone.

“Becks. Slow down will ya? I know it feels good to be back home but I only have two legs and a heavy suitcase behind me.” Jimmy said, dragging his extra large suitcase behind him while trying to catch up with me.

“Oh Jimmy, you're as dramatic as ever," I said with a chuckle and stopped in my tracks.

“Well, what's life without a bit of drama." He said walking past me.

I couldn't help but burst out laughing, catching up to him. Without him by my side, five years in the human world would have been boring. I caught the scent of someone familiar.

“Becky, Jimmy."

We both turned to see Brandon, my older brother, standing a few feet away. He looked the same. His face was clear with no beards on it, though his stents were a bit more serious. His eyes widened when they met mine, and then he broke into a playful grin, striding towards me with open arms.

I brushed past Jimmy, dropping my bag to hug him tightly.

Jimmy picked up my bag and walked towards us, a cheerful smile on his face.

"Look at you," he said, holding me at arm’s length and scanning my face. "You’ve grown up. You’re… different.”

"Good different, I hope," I replied with a smirk.

He laughed. "Of course. You’re still my kid sister.” he turned to face Jimmy, pulling him in for a hug which surprised him.

“Jimmy, it's so good to see your sassy self. I hope my sister wasn't too stressed out in the human world?”

" Your sister is as tough as a rock and as sticky as a cat.”

Brandon raised an eyebrow at Jimmy’s comment, his lips twitching with amusement. “Sticky as a cat or sneaky as a cat? That’s a new one. Care to explain, Jimmy?”

Jimmy grinned, setting my suitcase upright. “Both. She’s stubborn as hell, but once she decides you’re hers, you’re stuck. Doesn’t let go. Like a clingy cat that swipes at you if you try to leave.”

I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms. “Oh, please. You’re the clingy one, Jimmy. Who insisted on following me here because ‘life without Becky is dull’?” I mimicked his dramatic tone.

Brandon chuckled, clapping Jimmy on the back. “Well, I’m glad you followed her. Someone’s gotta keep her out of trouble.”

Jimmy smirked. “Oh, trust me, trouble is the one following her.”

I shot him a mock glare before grabbing my suitcase and bag from Jimmy. “Alright, enough teasing. Let’s get going before I regret bringing you here.”

Brandon laughed, picking up Jimmy’s oversized suitcase with ease before taking mine. “I’ll drive. Mom and Dad are waiting, and knowing Mom, she’s probably already cooked half the kitchen.”

We piled into Brandon’s truck, the familiar scent of leather and pine filling the cab. Jimmy sat in the back, peering out the window like an excited tourist.

“Is this your first time in pack territory?” Brandon asked, glancing at him through the rearview mirror.

Jimmy nodded. “Yup. I’ve heard all the stories from Becky, though. Werewolves, packs, mates… it’s all fascinating. A bit like a soap opera, really.”

Brandon snorted. “That’s one way to describe it. Though I’d say it’s less dramatic than you might think.”

Jimmy leaned forward, grinning mischievously. “Oh, come on. You’re telling me you don’t have any juicy pack gossip? Secret love affairs? Betrayals? The usual drama?”

Brandon shot me a look, his smirk widening. “Oh, we’ve got drama alright. Becky will fill you in later, I’m sure.”

I groaned, slouching in my seat. “Can we not? I came back for peace, not gossip.”

Jimmy laughed, settling back in his seat. “Fine, fine. But don’t think I’m not taking notes for when the drama inevitably finds us.”

Brandon’s laughter echoed through the truck as we continued down the winding road toward the pack house. The closer we got, the tighter my chest felt. The trees blurred past, the familiarity both comforting and suffocating.

Brandon got to know Jimmy from the once in a while video calls.

Finally, we rounded the last bend, and the pack house came into view. It stood tall and proud, just as I remembered it, with its wide wooden doors and sprawling grounds. A small crowd was gathered outside, and I recognized a few familiar faces among them.

As we pulled up, Mom was the first to break away, her face lighting up when she saw me.

“Pumpkin!” she cried, running toward the truck before Brandon could even put it in the park.

I barely had time to step out before she enveloped me in a tight hug, her warmth and scent instantly soothing my nerves.

“Hi, Mom,” I murmured, hugging her back.

“Oh, look at you,” she said, pulling back to cup my face. Her eyes were misty, her smile radiant. “You’ve grown so much. And who’s this handsome young man?” she added, glancing at Jimmy with curiosity.

Jimmy stepped forward, flashing his charming smile. “Jimmy, ma’am. Becky’s roommate, best friend, and professional drama diffuser.”

Mom laughed, shaking his hand. “Well, it’s lovely to meet you, Jimmy. Any friend of Becky’s family here.”

I couldn't see my dad or other brothers anywhere. “Where's Dad and the others?" I asked my mom.

“Branson, Damian, and Damon are in the kitchen or talking to some wolves while Sebastian is with your father, speaking with the Alpha King.” Mom said, unable to hide her excitement.

My heart immediately sank at the last word she said and I felt my knees getting weak.

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 42: Awake (For now.)

Becky's POV“For fuck’s sake, Lora, let me sleep. We can talk about this when I wake up,” I said, turning over and using my pillow to cover my ears, hoping it would at least block out a little of the female, elegant voice that was filled with worry, panic, and mockery.“But…”“No buts,” I yelled, finally shutting her up.“Yes, ma’am,” she replied in a small voice.“Thank you,” I said, getting comfortable in bed and blacking out almost immediately.—The next time I opened my eyes, the sky outside my window was bruised purple and gold. Evening. My room was dark except for the sliver of fading light leaking in through the curtains. For one blissful second, I thought maybe my stomach would let me sleep until morning. Then it growled. Loud. Aggressive. Like an angry bear demanding tribute.I groaned and shoved my face deeper into the pillow. “Shut up. You’re embarrassing us.”You’re embarrassing yourself, Lora whispered, smug now that I’d woken her too. I told you—food would call you back

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 41: Closer Than You Think.

Becky's POVThe car ride home felt longer than the trip to Grandma's. Maybe it was because no one spoke—not really. The air was heavy, thick with unasked questions and sideways glances I could feel burning into my skin.I pressed my forehead against the window, watching trees blur past in streaks of green and gray. My body still hummed from last night. Every nerve, every bone felt wrong and right at the same time—like I'd been stitched back together with fire instead of thread.I'd shifted.Me. The girl who thought she'd never have a wolf. The girl who'd resigned herself to being less. And yet Lora had burst out of me like she'd been waiting for years, her howl tearing the forest apart, her claws carving into the earth as if she owned it. Even now, I could feel her pacing inside me—more restless, more proud, more alive than she'd ever been when she was just a voice in my head."Stop brooding," Lora whispered in my head, her voice sharp and confident. "You should be celebrating.""Easy

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 40: Too vulnerable.

Chapter 40: Too vulnerable.Haunter's POV Sleep felt inevitable and with Dax’s constant yapping of him sensing our mate coming to us willingly.“Can you please stop? Your puppy love is a little annoying." Dax growled, low and restless. “You felt it too. Don’t play dumb. She’s not just ours—she’s… different.”Different. That word again.I ran a hand over my face, dragging out the exhaustion but not chasing it away. Dax wasn’t wrong. When Becky shifted tonight, the pull was nothing like I’d expected. It wasn’t the soft thread of a mate bond; it was a tidal wave. Ancient. Raw. Something that had no business living inside someone who still wore oversized hoodies and tripped over her own feet.I almost went to her. Almost tore across the forest just to catch one glimpse. My wolf wanted it. My blood wanted it. Every damn part of me wanted it.But I didn’t.Because she’s not ready.Because if I showed up, she’d see the truth in my eyes—that she owns me already, and I don’t know how to take

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 39: Come In.

Chapter 39: Come In.Becky's POV “What old ones?" I asked, drifting off to sleep. "The old ones. The Ancients. The ones even Alphas don't talk about. Your power? It’s tied to them. Your lineage isn’t just rare—it’s forbidden in some circles."I sat up slowly, the blanket falling off my shoulders. The morning sun filtered through the curtains, too bright for a girl who nearly exploded the forest twelve hours ago. What the hell does that even mean?"It means you’re no longer just Becky—the girl who couldn’t shift. You’re a wildcard in the middle of an already messed up supernatural chessboard." She hesitated. "And I think the King felt it too."I stilled.Haunter.Of course he did. I could feel the way our bond tugged last night. Even now, it hummed faintly beneath my skin. Dormant. Waiting. But alive.“What the hell are you dragging me into, fate?” I muttered aloud, pressing my hands against my face.A knock on my door made me flinch.“Becks?” It was Brandon.I groaned. “What?”“We m

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 38: The Old Ones.

Chapter 38: The Old Ones. Becky’s POVBy the time the sun rose, my skin felt too tight again—but for an entirely different reason. The shift back to human form wasn’t graceful. It was painful. Exhausting. Messy. There was no glowing magic or gentle fade like the stories made it sound. Just the raw stretch of muscle and bone, the wet snap of transition, and the cold dew on my bare skin as I collapsed into the dirt behind Grandma’s house, naked, trembling, and very, very human.Brandon had yelped and spun so fast he nearly tripped over his own feet. Damian had sighed and muttered something about “getting a damn blanket before she freezes to death.” And Sebastian… well, Sebastian had done what he always did—stepped between me and the world without hesitation and draped his own hoodie around me before lifting me like I weighed nothing at all. Now, hours later, I sat curled on Grandma’s living room couch wrapped in an old crocheted quilt, staring into the fireplace like it held the answer

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 37: Idiot.

Chapter 37: Idiot.Becky's POV.I didn’t sleep.I couldn't.Not because I didn’t want to. My body was exhausted, but my mind… my mind was a battlefield. Flashes of Haunter’s touch, his voice in the dark, the way my power had ripped loose from me like it had a mind of its own. I didn’t feel like myself anymore. I felt like I was wearing someone else’s skin, and it was too tight.I stared at the ceiling of the little guest room Grandma had set up for me. Moonlight filtered through the lace curtains, painting soft shadows across the walls. The air felt thick. Like it was watching me.Around 3 a.m., I gave up pretending. I threw the blankets off and padded out into the hallway barefoot, hoodie still wrapped tightly around me like armor. I didn’t know where I was going—just that I needed to move. If I stayed still, I’d crack. The floorboards creaked beneath my steps. I could hear Brandon snoring faintly from the room at the end of the hall. Damian was probably still pacing in his sleep, an

  • The Alpha King Hexed Bride   Chapter 10: Jimmy.

Chapter 10: Jimmy. Becky's POV The cold bit into my feet the second I stepped out the side door, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. My body was moving on pure adrenaline, heart thundering in my chest so loud I could hear it in my ears.I had no plan.No direction.Just a singular, burning instinct—le
