LOGINChapter IV
Freya “Don’t be a naughty boy,” I laughed. Theo giggled louder, sending bubbles flying into the air. “Okay, that’s enough—” Suddenly his body jerked. The laughter stopped as his small frame started shaking violently. My heart dropped. “Theo?” A faint gold mark showed at his side face, then disappeared. His eyes had turned to bright gold. “Theo!” I poured water over him to wash the bubbles away and grabbed him quickly. “Scarlet!” I rushed out of the bathroom with Theo in my arms. Scarlet met me halfway, fear written all over her face. “What happened?” She looked at him. Theo was shaking badly in my hands and his skin was becoming abnormally hot. “Please get the concoction. Fast!” I lowered myself to the floor and gently laid Theo down. The shaking grew worse, I could feel him in pain, then I saw patches of long thick gold hair, pushing out through his skin. Tears filled my eyes, threatening to fall down. This was new, his powers were growing stronger. Scarlet ran back with the bottle already open, so I measured the usual amount with the cap and tried to give it to him. “Theo, it’s okay… open your mouth for me.” The liquid spilled everywhere as he trembled. Fuck. I poured another dose, holding his head steady while Scarlet tried to hold his arm. She flinched immediately. “He’s so hot,” she whispered, pulling her hand back. “It feels like I’m going to get burned.” I held him firmly in place, gripping his jaw as I forced the mixture into his mouth. The shaking slowly reduced but he was still trembling, so I gave him another dose. Finally, his body calmed down and he slumped forward against me, completely drained and asleep. I was glad it was over but the patches of gold hair were still visible on his skin. Scarlet gasped. “Freya… his back.” My head flew up to meet her eyes. “Hi… his back.” She squeezed her eyes shut. I quickly flipped him over and nearly pulled away in shock. The marks had deepened and spread further, stretching almost up to his neck. They looked like red, twisted tree roots moving in every direction across his skin. We both stared in fear. I had asked Theo once if these marks hurt him but he said he couldn’t feel anything, afterwards. It was just during the outbursts. They had started as small spots, like rashes. Now, they were redder, deeper, and longer. My baby was suffering so much. I couldn’t hold back anymore, the tears I had been fighting came. Scarlet stepped closer and crouched down, she rubbed my thigh softly, trying to comfort me. “It’s getting worse.” She said calmly. “I know,” I replied between sobs… We sat on the floor for some moments until my crying slowed down to quiet sobs. Scarlet stayed right there with me. “Do you think they could help?” She asked. I knew who she was referring to, the people from Blackmoon. I shook my head and buried my face in my palms. “Freya… we can’t keep trying to suppress this forever… you can’t… we need a solution.” And then my mind drifted to what the teacher had told me… “the child is not meant to be here, send him back to where he belongs.” She was right. Scarlet was right… but I don’t want to go there, the thought of going there terrified me. I sobbed harder. I didn’t want to face that place… I didn’t want to face him. Still Theo wasn’t safe here either with his illness getting worse… I pulled my hands away from my face and stared down at my son. The patches of hair had finally vanished. He was sleeping peacefully now, but he looked complete drained. “The paper…” I whispered. Scarlet understood quickly and stood up to get it. She brought me the small white card the guards had left. I wiped my eyes and took it from her. “Thank you.” I carried Theo to the couch and laid him down carefully, placing the card beside him. I looked at Scarlet with heavy grief in my chest… It was time. I walked into the bedroom and started packing our things into one bag, clothes for me and Theo, a few essentials. Scarlet walked in from behind. “Do you think I would let you leave without taking me along?” She asked My shoulders sagged. “Scarlet… that place is dangerous, you shouldn’t be thinking of it. You have your restaurant and your life here. You need to stay safe.” “Those things can take care of themselves. I already have a good manager at the restaurant, and this house isn’t a home without you and Theo. I’m not me without you too.” “I’m not in the mood to argue with you, you can’t come with. It’s not a place for humans.” “If you don’t care about our friendship, just say it,” she snapped. Anger rose in me and I turned to face her. “I do care about you! That’s exactly why I don’t want you to enter that world. You could die.” “And what’s the point of staying here if I lose both of you? You’re being selfish right now, and I hate it.” She turned. “Fine. Go alone then.” “I’ll take a cab,” I said quietly. She slammed the door at me. My claws were partially extended without me realising it. I was breathing hard, hot tears running down my face, I wiped them away with my arm. I finished packing, got dressed, and picked Theo up along with the bag. I grabbed the white card and slipped it into my pocket. Scarlet was sitting on the couch, typing furiously on her phone. She didn’t even look at me. “I love you,” I said softly. She didn’t respond back. My brows drew closer and I felt pain in my chest. I fear I might cry again. “ I’ll try to keep in touch.” Still nothing. I walked out of the house with Theo in my arms and the bag over my shoulder, closing the door quietly behind me. The cab stopped in front of the motel. I spotted the black car waiting outside. I paid the driver and watched him drive away before turning to face the motel. “You made your decision.” My heart jumped in fear. It was the female guard. The other two appeared moments later and moved toward the car as if she had sent a signal to them. “Come on.” We were all seated in the car now, the male who had spoken to me earlier was driving, while the other sat in the passenger seat. The female sat opposite me in the back seat, staring straight ahead. I looked down at Theo sleeping in my arms and let out a sigh. I sent out a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess. Please protect my son and let this be the right choice.Chapter XVIII FREYA The palace library was a massive room lined with ancient books and scrolls. Today, I was more amazed than the first time I came here with Tasha. At the time, I didn’t get the time to do much research because I needed to check on Theo. This time, I had slipped away after lunch while Scarlet took Theo to play in the gardens. I spent hours searching for anything about powerful young wolves, uncontrollable abilities, or strange markings like the ones on Theo’s back. Just because it calmed down a bit doesn’t mean we should forget the main reason for coming here. I found nothing comforting. Instead, I stumbled across old symbols carved into the edges of some scrolls, the same strange markings I had noticed in the palace architecture. They looked like something meant to contain power… or magic. A chill ran down my spine. I was still staring at one of the symbols when I felt a strong familiar presence behind me. Damon. “Looking for ways to hide my son again?” he
Chapter XVII Freya Some days later, Scarlet was gone before breakfast. For the past four days this was her routine. I had asked her about it and she said I should meet her in the courtyard if I wanted to know. Theo was with his father last night… My wolf didn’t have a problem with it but I did. My son had insisted on staying with the King and Damon accepted him happily. I didn’t want to talk to him after I saw him that day with Seraphine, and especially hearing what that maid said about me and my son being sent away. I know it was a mere rumour but how true was it? I still wonder why he decided to look for a Luna just after my return with my son. Why not then… or later? I find it so hard to understand. I have been avoiding both the ladies and him because they screamed the opposite of peace. I didn’t even speak with him when I went to pick up Theo. Gladly, I found Scarlet in the outer training courtyard, already drenched in sweat. She wore borrowed training leathers that were ob
Chapter XVI Freya Later that evening, I had left Theo with Scarlet just so I could walk the palace a little. I moved to the gardens which seemed too peaceful. The last time I came out here, Damon was here waiting for me. Or expecting me like he said. I took a few steps forward when I heard some giggling. I looked in the direction, it was Lady Seraphine and Damon. They walked slowly along the flower-lined path side by side. They had some distance away from me but I heard that giggle very clearly. My wolf was restless and then my claws shot out from my fingers. I stood still. Maybe I can try again to see if I can hear what they were on again. I thought to myself and prayed for my powers to work. “You are such a—“ The lady’s voice came in again but a sharp pang bit across my ear. I hissed in pain. This stuff was easier when I was much younger and now that I may need it, it’s hard? Why then did it come back. I grit my teeth against my jaw. At that moment, I regretted why I had c
Chapter XV King Damon I stood near the main arena, arms crossed, watching warriors spar in the distance. My wolf was unusually restless today and part of me wondered if all these was a mistake… bringing her to the open, pushing too soon, but another part, the one that had missed five years of my son’s life, shut the thoughts out. Turning my head, I saw Theo arrive with Freya and Scarlet trailing a few steps behind. The boy’s eyes widened at the sight of warriors shifting mid-fight. Perhaps, he was amazed by powerful wolves clashing before returning to human form… I want to believe it wasn’t his first time seeing such things. He stayed close to his mother’s side, but I caught the spark of curiosity in his gaze. I smiled and welcomed them as they got closer. “Dad?” Theo called out softly. The sound hit me harder than any sword blow. I crouched down to his level, keeping my voice steady. “Would you like to watch them train up close?” I asked. Theo glanced at Freya… perhaps
Chapter XIVFreyaThe morning after the feast, the palace felt even more overwhelming. I had barely slept, my mind replaying how those ladies smiled at Damon, touched his arm, and laughed at his minimal responses as if they were the funniest things they’d ever heard. The way he held that lady and danced with her... my wolf was furious. Now, Scarlet and I were walking through the eastern gardens with Theo when the ladies appeared. They moved as if they owned the place, and I almost rolled my eyes. The auburn-haired lady spotted us first and approached with graceful steps. “Lady Freya?… Correct me if I’m wrong,” she said warmly, her voice like honey; I wouldn't even blame Damon if he fell for her already.“That’s correct.”“Oh, I’m Lady Seraphine Valemont. I… heard about your son…” She said, looking at me with those innocent brown eyes that looked deceiving to me.“It must have been so difficult raising him alone in the human world. You’re incredibly strong.” She continued.“And what ex
Chapter XIII King Damon Long tables rasped under the scent of roasted meats, spiced wines, and silver platters piled high with delicacies in the dining hall. The entire court had gathered for the welcome feast, I sat at the head of the main table. My expression remained neutral as the three noble ladies were seated near me. Lady Seraphine Valemont smiled softly from my right, her hair catching the light like warm copper. She spoke gently about alliances and the beauty of the gardens, her voice so soothing. Lady Kaelith Stormrune sat a little further down, her silver-blonde braid resting over one shoulder. She ate with warrior efficiency, occasionally shooting glances my way, it looked like she was assessing me like I was a threat. Lady Selene Viremont, on my left, kept her eyes lowered, offering smiles and soft-spoken compliments. She was a shy one. Lord Varek watched his daughter with barely concealed pride from across the table. I played my role well, polite nods, good
Chapter XII Freya I wiped the last of my tears away with the back of my hand, forcing my expression into something neutral before I left the alcove. My eyes still felt swollen, but I couldn’t let Theo or Scarlet see me like this. I had forgotten the exact way back to the kitchen, so I followed
Chapter XI Freya Theo scraped the last bite of Scarlet’s chicken pasta from his plate, cheeks puffed out in satisfaction. I took one small taste and the familiar spices settled on my tongue. For a second, I was back in our tiny kitchen, the pressure of worrying endlessly lifting just a little.
Chapter IX Freya We had just finished bathing and were fully dressed when a knock sounded at the door. “Hold on, baby.” I walked over and opened it to find Scarlet standing there with a bright smile. She pushed her way inside without waiting. “Good morning to you too,” I called after her playfu
Chapter VIIIFreya I had just finished putting Theo to sleep after dinner. I didn’t want to go to any grand dining hall, so I requested that our food be brought straight to our quarters. Tasha had offered to bathe Theo and help care for him, but I refused. I didn’t trust anyone here yet. I glanc
