Mag-log inElena's POV
"No! Stop this! Please!" I tried, but it was useless.
Without hesitation, the guards grabbed me by the arms and tossed me out of the packhouse like yesterday's trash, and I hit the ground hard.
The agony of my severed mate bond, combined with the unbearable torment of my worsening heat, drowned out everything else.
"We… Can't stay here…" my wolf warned me, struggling to speak through the pain and dizziness. "If we stay… A male could find us."
I immediately understood what she meant. The scent of a she-wolf in heat was irresistible to most unmated males. Goddess knows what would happen if one stumbled upon me drenched and needy on the ground.
Despite the crushing pain, I pushed myself to my feet and ran into the forest. I had to find a place to hide before I attracted unwanted attention.
I wasn't thinking straight. I couldn't. My body was burning, my bond was shattered, and every instinct I had was firing at once, pulling me in different directions. I just ran. That was my first mistake.
I smelled them before I heard them. Alcohol and smoke and something feral underneath it, the kind of scent that made every hair on the back of my neck stand up. I stumbled to a stop. Through the trees, I could make out the glow of a fire and the shapes of bodies moving around it. Too many bodies.
Rogues.
My blood went cold. A she-wolf alone in the forest, rejected, in full heat, with no pack behind her. I might as well have walked in wearing a target.
I need to go back. I need to go back right now.
But before I could scramble up to my feet, half a dozen pairs of glowing eyes locked on me.
"My, my... what do we have here?" One of the rogues stepped forward.
"A lass!" another one chanted excitedly.
I tried to back away, but it was useless. In the blink of an eye, they were cornering me. There was nowhere to run to.
"What is this sweet smell?" one of the rogues wondered around me, his nostrils flaring as he scented the air.
"It's coming from her," another one pointed out, his tone puzzled before realization burned in his eyes. He knew.
They all knew.
The way their expressions shifted made my stomach drop. It wasn't just hunger. It was the look of wolves who had nothing to lose and no one to answer to. My heat was already making my thoughts blur at the edges, but fear cut straight through it, sharp and ice cold. There were six of them. I was one omega who could barely stand.
Their expressions shifted from confusion to thrill as they inched closer. Lust glowed in their eyes. I didn't need to be a mind reader to see what had just crossed their minds.
"Stay back!" I warned them, trying my best to sound imposing. "I... I work for Alpha Ryan Walter. I will complain directly to him about this. You're trespassing on his territory," I threatened, hoping it would be enough to scare them off.
I realized I had failed when the one who looked like their leader let out an amused huff. "What do you say, brothers? Should we let her go… or have some fun with her?"
No answer came, but one wasn't needed. They had made up their minds long before I said anything. It was obvious they had no intention of letting me leave. But what were wolves if they didn't play with their food?
This was my only chance to flee.
While they were distracted laughing as they fantasized about what they would do to me, I drove my knee into the crotch of the closest rogue. He squealed, clutching his balls as he fell to the ground. I didn't waste the opportunity. I bolted away without a second thought.
"Catch her!" the leader yelled.
As tightly as I'd held onto hope I could outrun them, that soon proved to be untrue. In a matter of seconds, one of them was on me, wrapping his fist around my wrist.
"Ah!" I screamed in pain.
I tried to push through it, to crawl away from him. It was useless. The rest of his friends soon swarmed me, pinning me down and leaving me completely helpless.
This is it, I thought. This is how it ends. Rejected, alone, and at the mercy of wolves who don't have any.
Why was this happening? Was the Moon Goddess trying to show me that everyone had been right all along? That I was nothing but a mistake?
Just when I thought this suffering might end me tonight, a savage roar cut through the night, making the ground shake. The atmosphere changed, becoming charged with a power so dire it forced everyone to their knees. Then a giant shadow descended over us.
From behind the trees jumped a monstrously large wolf with midnight-dark fur and vivid scarlet eyes. His aura was more powerful than any Alpha I'd ever met, but instead of terrifying me, his presence brought a shocking wave of comfort. When his gaze fell on me, a violent, undeniable pull snapped between us.
"Mate…" my wolf murmured faintly.
I couldn't process it. My mind was already in pieces, the heat tearing through me, the pain of Ryan's rejection still raw in my chest. And now this. A second chance mate. Here. Now. Of all the moments in my life for the Moon Goddess to answer me, she chose this one.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I didn't have time to do either.
My breath hitched. A second chance mate. It wasn't a myth.
Reluctantly, the beast tore his gaze away from me and bared his fangs at the rogues. Terrified, they scrambled away from me. With purposeful steps, the giant wolf marched to stand between us. Then he shifted.
As the shift ended, a dangerously handsome man stood where the beast had been. Moonlight caught the hard lines of his jaw and bare chest, accentuating his muscles. While I watched him in awe, he glared at the rogues like they were nothing but insects.
"Party's over," his voice was low, husky, but it carried a lethal edge. "Get the hell out of my sight before I rip you apart."
The rogues didn't need to be told twice. They turned and ran with their tails tucked between their legs. Once they were gone, the man turned around and moved toward me so fast I would have missed it if I'd blinked. He knelt down, his eyes inspecting my injured knee before his soothing gaze returned to mine.
"Can you walk, little wolf?" he asked tenderly.
I opened my mouth to answer. Nothing came out. Up close, the pull between us was overwhelming, hitting me all at once from every direction. Gratitude, disbelief, the desperate relief of still being alive, and underneath all of it, the heat roaring back to life with a ferocity that made my hands shake. He was my mate. He had just saved me. And my traitorous body did not care about the order of those two facts at all.
Before I could answer, he scooped me up into his muscular arms. The moment he touched me, a jolt of liquid fire shot straight to my core. I gasped, my skin burning where he held me. Unaware of the effect he had on me, he carried me a few yards to the riverbank, gently lowering me onto the soft grass.
As he leaned over me to clean my leg, his cedarwood and pine scent filled my nose at once. That was the last drop that sent me over the edge, completely breaking whatever sanity I had left. My heat took total control.
I grabbed his shirt, pulling him closer. The stranger stiffened immediately. His jaw clenched as he stared down at me, his eyes flicking back to that dangerous scarlet shade.
"Stop," he warned, but there was no anger in his voice. Only restraint. "You're in heat. You'll regret this tomorrow."
Maybe he was right. Maybe this would be a mistake. But as my most primal instincts took over, all I cared about was satisfying my heat. I wrapped my legs tightly around his waist and pulled him closer again. This time, he didn't fight back.
"I won't," I gasped, my lips brushing his, trembling. "Please… take me. Make it stop…"
His breath hitched. Those eyes darkened, and then he crushed his lips to mine.
Elena’s POVAlong with the searing inferno, panic surged. Why was I going into heat right now? This shouldn’t be happening. Not so soon after my last one. Unless…My eyes widened in horror.Ryan must have mixed something into the champagne. As terror crept up my spine, I turned around just in time to find Ryan spitting out the sip he had taken earlier. He’d never swallowed it. My heart thrashed against my ribs as he wiped his mouth with the back of his arm before a sinister smile spread across his lips. Then he started walking towards me.“No! Stay back!” I screamed frantically, trying to crawl away, but another wave of liquid fire spread through my veins, locking me in place.“Why? I can help you, Elena,” he suggested huskily, crouching as he approached. A jolt shot through me as his fingers brushed my cheek. “Wouldn’t you like that?”“G-get away from me,” I stuttered.Though I was desperate to escape him, the rising temperature made me dizzy. My vision blurred until it seemed like
Elena’s POV“Elena! Elena! Goddess, where are you, you useless Omega?!” Fiona shrieked.I dragged myself towards her, tiredly replying, “Yes, my Lady?”“Finally! There you are!” She huffed. “This is not the time for you to slack off! My wedding is tomorrow!” she stressed. “Go get the last decorations. Bring them to the Grand Hall.”“Yes, my Lady,” I repeated automatically, almost robotically. For these days, I had pretty much become Fiona’s shadow. I barely got to spend time with Judy or my mother, as I had to follow the princess around everywhere. She constantly ordered me around, whether it was assisting the other servants or acting as her personal maid by bringing her food and whatever else she needed. At this point, I was starting to doubt if I could make it to tomorrow. As soon as I returned with the last, heaviest box of decorations, Fiona started barking in my ear again. “Elena! Where’s the guest list?”“I don’t know, my Lady,” I confessed exhaustedly. Her face turned red with
Elena’s POVOnce the Alpha King left the guest suite, I needed a moment to stabilize myself.Everything had been crazy intense from the moment he’d found my clothes covered in Ryan’s scent. From the fear that struck when he started yelling to the relief that followed when he finally believed me, my emotions were all over the place. Shaking my head to rid myself of the emotional whirlwind, I drifted through the hallway toward Adrian’s room. I felt nervous being there, so I moved straight to the closet, hoping to quickly pick something and leave as fast as I could.Yet I was stunned the second I opened the double doors. There were dozens of different outfits—more than I had ever owned—and this was only what he’d brought for his daughter’s wedding. Not only that, but each piece looked more expensive than the last. There were so many options, and none of them seemed fit for an Omega like me.What shirt should I even pick?“I like the white one,” my wolf suggested excitedly.“Why?” I curi
Adrian’s POVMy eyes locked on her, and my wolf went from enraged to hungry as I scanned every inch of her exposed skin. Beads of water rolled down her shoulders, making her skin glisten, and I caught myself wishing I was the one tracing her curves. She looked nothing short of divine. Before I could stop it, memories of our night together flooded my mind. I was transported back to the moment we met for the first time. She looked just as ravishing now as she did then. If only I could have her again, only to remember what she tasted like.“Mate! Claim her! Now!” my wolf roared restlessly inside my head, clawing underneath my skin as he tried to break free and do exactly what he was telling me to do.For a brief, fleeting second, I almost listened to him.I almost gave in to the temptation to relive what we had shared.Yet before I lost control, I held onto my anger and let it anchor me. I refused to let the poisonous matebond cloud my judgment again.“Why is Ryan’s scent all over your c
Elena’s POVMy legs and arms were trembling by the time I had made it back to the Alpha King’s guest house. Fiona’s dress was heavy, and carrying it for such a long way on an empty stomach had left me so light-headed I almost stumbled climbing up the stairs to the front door.I knocked twice, but received no answer. Since I was tired and just wanted to get this over with, I pushed the door open anyway, poking my head through the crack. There were guards stationed at the front of the entrance hall and busy servants cleaning the house, but no sight of Adrian.“Alpha King?” I called and waited, but got no response. In the end, I assumed Judy and her father must have not come back from training yet and entered the house quietly. The servants and guards eyed me with caution, but they knew I worked for the Alpha King now. No one tried to stop me as I dragged my exhausted self to Fiona’s room.Carefully, I set the dress down on the edge of her bed before flopping onto the floor. I just neede
Elena’s POV“Ah!” Ryan gasped, his hands flying to his balls as he stumbled back in pain.I didn’t miss my chance.Shoving him out of my way, I rushed to the door. Ryan tried to follow me, but the pain slowed him down. I made it to the door first, and he froze in his spot as I flung it open.“Get out! Now!” I ordered him.Ryan sneered. “Fine. I’ll wait for you outside.” As he walked past me, he whispered in my ear, “I can’t wait to see you in a wedding dress.”Once he was gone, I closed the door in a rush, locking it behind me. For a moment, I just stayed there, waiting for my pulse to even. The episode had left me shaken. My anger hadn’t completely subsided when I remembered I didn’t have much time. Fiona would be furious if I left her waiting any longer, and I was sure she would be telling her father about it. I couldn’t risk that.Taking a deep breath, I forced myself to walk towards the first dress. It was silvery-white, glistening under the light. The cut was elegant and sophisti
Elena’s POVThankfully, my mother was already asleep when I got home. I rushed into my room and started crying. The hurtful words the Alpha King had spat at me kept ringing in my head until the next morning.Had I known Judy was Adrian’s daughter, I never would have agreed to join them for dinner.
Adrian’s POVSurprise washed over me as I heard my daughter introduce the girl I’d had a one-night stand with as her friend. But underneath it, something else started to surface.Suspicion.“Is this… the old friend from Shadowfang you mentioned?” I asked Judy, my eyes never leaving Elena.“Yes!” my
Elena’s POVFor the first time in a while, I managed to have a good night of sleep where Ryan didn’t appear to haunt my dreams.I was grateful for Judy’s presence. She spent the night at our home and stayed with us through the next day. When the time came for me to leave for my second night of work
Ryan’s POVAfter sending the message, I lean back on my couch and take a sip of wine, relishing on how smart I am. Elena shouldn’t take long to reply. She had to be desperate by now.Yet as the minutes passed, I never heard my phone beep. Strange. Had I left it on mute by accident? To confirm I had
