With that, he turned to leave as Kai led me back into the room, how had everything gone so wrong?

I woke to arguing.

For a moment, I was disoriented, unfamiliar ceiling and soft sheets and Kai's arm around my waist, when had that happened? Then I heard the voices outside the door and came fully awake.

"…don't care what your protocols are, I need to see her!"

Theo.

I untangled myself from Kai, who was also waking up, and went to the door. Two guards stood outside, looking uncomfortable, while Theo faced them down with a fury I'd never seen from him before.

"Theo?" I said, and he spun around.

"Lena. Thank god." He tried to push past the guards, but they blocked him. "These idiots won't let me…"

"It's okay," I told the guards. "He's my friend."

They looked uncertain until Kai appeared behind me. "Let him in. But stay posted outside."

The guards stepped aside, and Theo practically fell into the room, grabbing my shoulders.

"Are you okay? Did they hurt you? I heard about your mother… He stopped, looking at me. At the bedroom visible behind me and at Kai standing there in rumpled sleep clothes. "Did you…"

"We slept," I said firmly. "Just slept, nothing else."

"Yet," Theo said bitterly.

"Theo…"

He gestured wildly. "You accept his mate claim, move into his rooms, and now you're sleeping in his bed while your mother is facing execution?"

"That's not true," Kai said quietly.

Theo rounded on him. "You're using her. Everyone can see it. You claim this mate bond bullshit to…"

"It's not bullshit," I interrupted. "The bond is real, Theo. I felt it."

He looked at me like I'd slapped him. "You can't actually believe…"

"I do. I don't understand it, and I definitely didn't ask for it, but it's real." I took a breath. "And Kai is trying to help. He's pushing for an investigation into my father's death and…"

Theo's voice cracked. "Lena, they're going to destroy you. The high-bloods hate you, the Alpha wants to use you, and you're just going along with it because of some magical bond that's probably manipulated anyway…"

"That's enough," Kai said, his voice dropping to something dangerous.

Theo laughed. "Lena, I've been in love with you since we were kids. I've protected you, supported you, been there for every awful thing this pack did to you. And the second some high-blood prince claims you, you just… accept it?"

The room went silent.

I'd known. Of course I'd known, on some level. But hearing him say it out loud, with such raw pain, made my heart crack.

"Theo," I said softly. "I love you too. As my best friend. As family. But not…"

He turned to leave, but I grabbed his arm. "Don't do this. Don't let this destroy our friendship."

"Our friendship?" He pulled away gently but firmly. "Lena, our friendship ended the moment you accepted his claim. Now you're just… someone I used to know. Someone who became someone else."

"That's not true…"

But he was already walking out, brushing past the guards and disappearing down the hall.

I stood there, frozen, feeling like something vital had just been ripped out of my chest.

Kai's hand touched my shoulder. "I'm sorry."

"Don't." I stepped away from his touch. "Just… give me a minute."

I went to the window, pressing my forehead against the cool glass. Below, I could see pack members going about their day, normal and oblivious to the chaos swirling in the compound. Somewhere out there, Theo was hurting because of choices I'd made. My mother was under guard. Seventeen dead wolves were still waiting for justice.

And I was supposed to complete a mating bond with a man I barely knew to stabilize a pack that had never wanted me in the first place.

"This is all wrong," I whispered.

"I know," Kai said from across the room, giving me space. "But we'll fix what we can. Starting with your mother's trial. I've already contacted sympathetic council members. We'll make sure she gets real justice."

I turned to face him. "And Theo? How do we fix that?"

"I don't know if we can. Not right now." His expression was pained. "He loves you. Seeing you with me, bound to me, that's not something that heals quickly."

"He's part of the Resistance. Your father is planning a raid. If something happens to him because I chose you…"

"I won't let that happen," Kai said firmly. "I'll get word to the Resistance about the raid. Give them time to scatter or hide evidence. Your friend will be safe."

"Why would you help him when he clearly hates you?"

"Because you care about him. And because he's right that you deserve better than being caught in the middle of pack politics." Kai moved closer but didn't touch me. "I meant what I said before. When we complete the bond, it'll be your choice. And if you decide this is too much, if you want to reject it and figure out another way, I'll understand."

I studied his face, searching for the manipulation Theo had accused him of. But all I saw was sincerity and a bone-deep weariness that matched my own.

"I don't want to reject the bond," I admitted. "I hate that I don't want to, because it would be so much simpler if I did. But every time I think about it, something inside me screams no."

"That's the bond talking."

I took a breath. "I'm not ready to complete the mating ritual. But I'm not ready to give up on this either. Can we exist in that in-between for a while?"

"As long as you need," he said. "Though my father won't be patient forever."

  • The Alpha Rejected His Bride For Me   Chapter 171: Acting Normal

(Theo POV)I did not sleep.I lay on the bed in the back room in the dark with the work jacket folded on the chair in the corner and the sounds of Curtis's house settling around me, the creak of the old boards and the wind through the gap under the back door and the distant sound of Jake moving around in the kitchen before he went to wherever he slept, and I lay on top of the covers with my boots still on and looked at the ceiling and waited for the night to end.At some point I must have gone under because when I opened my eyes the light coming under the back room door was different, the grey-blue of early morning rather than the amber of the kitchen lamp, and I sat up and my neck was stiff on the left side and my mouth was dry and I sat on the edge of the bed in the grey light and put my hands on my knees and looked at the floor.

  • The Alpha Rejected His Bride For Me   Chapter 170: A Restless Night

(Theo POV)I had stopped at the house first, the one I was still technically living in, unlocked the front door and gone through to the back room and taken the jacket off and looked at it and then folded it with the lapel facing inward so the stain was not visible and put it on the shelf at the top of the wardrobe behind the spare blanket. Then I put on the other jacket, the one I used for boundary work, heavier and older and not the jacket you wore when you were going somewhere that required it, and I went back out and locked the door and walked to Curtis's.The house was lit when I got there. I could see it from the end of the lane, the kitchen window warm and yellow in the dark, and I could hear voices when I was still ten meters away .I came through the door and Curtis looked up from the table and Jake looked up from the counter and Pete was on the bench with his boots off."Back," Curtis said."Back," I said.I hung the work jacket on the hook and went to the stove and put my ha

  • The Alpha Rejected His Bride For Me   Chapter 169: After

(Kai POV)The room was quiet for a long time after the door closed.I sat in the chair with my hand over Lena's and she lay flat on the bed looking at the ceiling and the lamp held its amber circle and outside the window the north garden was dark and neither of us moved and neither of us spoke and the room held us both in it and the silence was the kind that did not need filling. Then she made a sound. It was small, the first one, barely audible, the sound of something being held back that had run out of room to be held, and her face changed, not dramatically, not all at once, but the jaw that had been set released and the eyes that had been on the ceiling closed and the breath that had been careful around the ribs came out in a way that was not about the ribs at all, and then she was crying. Not quietly. Not the contained kind. She put her right hand over her face, the hand that had been under mine, and she turned her head to the

  • The Alpha Rejected His Bride For Me   Chapter 168: The Loss

(Kai POV)Adler held the chart. He looked at it once more and then he set it on the side table with a care that had nothing to do with the chart and everything to do with his hands needing a moment, and then he looked at me and he said, "The follow-up assessment I conducted an hour ago found that the pregnancy is no longer viable."He said it plainly. No preamble, no softening architecture around it, just the words in the order they needed to be in, and I stood near the window and I heard them and I did not move."The heartbeat has stopped," he said. "I conducted the assessment twice before coming to this room. The result was the same both times." He kept his eyes on my face. "The trauma of the fall was significant enough to cause a disruption that the pregnancy could not sustain. This is not uncommon in cases involving this level of physical impact. It is not a reflection of anything Miss Graves did or did not do."I looked at the

  • The Alpha Rejected His Bride For Me   Chapter 167: The Doctor Arrives

(Kai POV)Diane came within ten minutes of being called.I heard her in the corridor before the door opened, her footsteps and the footsteps of someone else with her, and when the door opened it was Diane and a man I recognized as Dr. Adler, the compound's senior physician, who had not been in the room when they brought Lena in that afternoon.I stood up from the chair.Adler was a man in his late fifties with grey at his temples and the unhurried quality of someone who had been in rooms like this enough times that the room itself did not affect his pace. He came through the door and he looked at Lena first, the professional survey, taking in the bandage and the dressing and the position she was in, and then he looked at me.The second look held something the first one did not.I had seen that look before. The last time I had seen it I had been seventeen and standing in a different corridor in a different wing of this compou

  • The Alpha Rejected His Bride For Me   Chapter 166: Lena Wakes Up

(Kai POV)I had been watching the window when it happened. The north garden had gone fully dark hours ago and the lamp on the wall was still at its lowest setting and the cup Diane had left on the side table was cold and untouched and I had been sitting in the chair with my hand over Lena's and my eyes on the window because looking at her face for too many consecutive hours without movement produced a particular kind of strain that looking at the window periodically relieved without requiring me to leave the room.I was looking at the window when her fingers moved. Not dramatically, not a sudden grip or a reaching out, just the slight curl of the fingers under my palm, the small adjustment of a hand that had been still for hours and was beginning to remember that it belonged to someone. I looked down at her hand and then at her face. Her eyelids were moving. Her eyes opened. Not fully, not with clarity, just a narrow
